sheriff smith during last year's election. she was in charge of the correctional peace officer's association, and she helped steer their support to the sheriff. at that point in time, she was a lieutenant. after the election, sheriff smith made her a captain, but now she is out, and i'll be following this up in the coming days. >> and as dan mentioned, captain le has had a long career with the sheriff's office. we talked to her in 2017. she was the first female president of the santa clara county correctional peace officers association. le has been one of the most well paid county employees for years. in 2017, she received more than $449,000 with overtime and benefits on a $142,000 base salary. in other news, witnesses to a walnut creek police shooting are now sharing their account of what happened last night. the shooting happened at orchard and arlene lanes in walnut creek. officers shot and killed a 23-year-old mentally ill man. police say he was a threat.

those who knew him say he suffered from mental health issue, and they wonder this morning if the shooting was justified. here is abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield. >> neighbors describe a loud confrontation happening on their quiet street yesterday. they say arlene drive was full of walnut creek police officers. police say they have been called three times about a man acting out and carrying a crowbar. >> we heard a lot of noise. i looked out the window, and he was charging down the road here with a crowbar, and the cops were telling him to stop, i think. that's what brought me to the window. because we heard all this yelling. >> reporter: police say the man's grandmother and mother had both called to report him. a neighbor also called saying the man was at their door. conner thanning saw his dad and sister take cover behind their car. >> i thought the guy was going to charge my dad. so i come running out the door. i see these cops yelling at him. and they shoot him and he didn't

fall down, and so they shot him again and he just drops. >> reporter: he says he understands the officers were probably just scared, but he also wonders if the man needed to be shot. >> they could have shot him in the legs. six guys could have disarmed him and threw him down. they have training in that stuff, i believe. they could have maced him in the eyes. didn't have to shoot him six times. >> police say they fired six beanbag rounds at him but they had little to no effect. he said they charged at him with a crowbar. >> they were yelling at him to stop. man, they did everything they could. >> just another mentally ill person that, you know, had -- was taken probably misinterpreted and got shot down. >> he said the crowbar looked more like a javelin, a long spear with a sharp edge. police have said they do plan to release footage from the officer's body cameras. in walnut creek, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> if you or someone you love is struggling with mental illness, we have resources for you to find your ally on our website,

union city is entering its third week, and now the end of the school year is looming. >> the strike lasted longer than california's other major strikes this year. a strike in los angeles ended after six days. oakland's lasted seven. but in the new haven school district, it's now ten. >> jobina fortson has been following the story. she joins us live with the latest on negotiations. jobina? >> kristen and ama, teachers and parents have closed up shop here today. the second round of picketing started around 1:00 outside the district office here that was the same time that bargaining picked up again between the district and the union. we're told the talks are supposed to end around 7:00 tonight. >> we want justice. >> we said very clearly when we started this we knew it was not an easy path, but we knew we had to stay in solidarity. >> reporter: that's the president of the new haven teachers association, making it clear the strike won't stop until they get what they want. the union is calling for a 6% raise, 3% each year. that's

>> nhca has moved a lot, for sure. but they started way high. >> in a surprise move monday, the district offered to go back to the table. that wasn't supposed to happen until tuesday. >> any time there is talk, it's always hopeful. but you know, from what i've been hearing about how the superintendent has been behaving and the games the district has been playing, it's really kind of sad. >> it seems like no one expected the strike to last this long. it's day ten now, the longest in the state this school year. >> it's a really troubling time at the moment. i'll really trying to figure out what the plan is, matthew lamb is a senior and should have taken his finals today and is scheduled to have his last day of school wednesday, in case he and his classmates never return to school, the district plans to calculate grades using three different data points. >> we're going look at the current grade that's sitting in our student information system right now. we're going to take a look at their fourth quarter deficiency grades, and wrea loheigee fosene

depending on the senior, their last day of school should be wednesday or thursday of this week. so as the union and the district cannot come to an agreement within the next two days, some of those students may never return to school. kristen and ama? >> all right, jobina. so you talked about the impact on grades and also the finals, but what about the graduation ceremony requirements themselves? >> the district tells me that the graduation should not be impacted. they're going to use the principals to coordinate with the students to work out schedules for practices for the ceremony and also the last day of school for all the other students should be june 13th. the graduation is scheduled for june 15th. we're now reporting live in union city, jobina ne. hey wrap it up before then. jobina, thank you so much. we spent a week digging into some of the issues local teachers face as part of our efforts to building a better bay area. we look at what it takes to find

shows a mixed picture. the inland locations like livermore, concord, fairfield and santa rosa are 8 to 11 degrees warmer right now than they were this time yesterday. near the coast and bay, san francisco, half moon bay, palo alto, 2 to four degrees cooler than this time yesterday. and as we look at specific temperatures right now, 85 at concord and livermore. 77 in santa rosa. 77 at san jose. 61 here in san francisco. but things are going to get even toastier tomorrow and the next day. i'll have the accuweather forecast in just a few minutes. kristen? >> spencer, thank you. okay. get ready for a big change this week if you use uber or lyft from san francisco international airport. starting wednesday, sfo is moving all pickups at the domestic terminals to the domestic hourly garage on the fifth floor of the airport. here is a map. that means cars will no longer be able to pick up passengers a the curb. the airport says the move should help with traffic congestion. if you live near downtown walnut creek, you may have been smelling natural gas this

disrupting an entire industry and shutting down stores. well, now itunes itself is fading into the background. at the wwdc happening inside the san jose convention center all week, it was unveiled that three new apps will replace it. do you even remember how much money you spent on itunes when it first came out? >> oh, don't ask about it. i don't want to remember. it was quite a lot. >> i spent basically my whole allowance when i was in high school. so probably like $100 every three or four months i guess, yeah. >> itunes, the ipod and then the itunes store unveiled back-to-back by steve jobs in the early 2000s cemented his place in music history. there may have been a dozen different ways to download music before that, but it was itunes that made everything simple, legal, and mainstream. ushering a new digital era. >> especially as an elder millennial, i think that's what i'm called now, it does feel like a little heartbreaking, but

report. facebook's stock lost 7.5% while shares of alphabet, google's parent company dropped 6%. the nba finals moved back to the bay area this week with the series between the warriors and the raptors tied up at one game apiece now. the warriors were down at half last night, but scored 18 unanswered points to open the third quarter and held on to win, 109-104. it's unclear if the win will prove costly for the warriors, though. both klay thompson and kevon looney left the game with injuries. there are no updates so far onner in status for game three wednesday night in oakland. >> oracle arena has set a record. ne ording to sports business paid 50, $507.50 each for twooro courtside tickets. the tickets were bought throuy legitimate source. rovell says that sets a new per seat record for the nba finals.

tower looking over san francisco. you can see how blue the skies are right now. 57 degrees in san francisco. 72 across the bay in oakland. 75 in mountain view. 85 at morgan hill and 55 at half moon bay. and here is the view at the golden gate where you can see the beginnings of light low clouds beginning the move in over the bay. it's 77 degrees up north at santa rosa right now. napa, 72. mid- to upper 80s at fairfield, vacaville, concord and livermore. and the view from the east bay hills camera looking toward the golden gate. you can see the little layer of marine layer there just beginning to build. these are our forecast features. it will be summer-like warmth. we'll have summer-like warmth the next two days. high temperatures will climb well into the 90s inland. it will be windy, though, and sharply cooler on thursday and friday. and we'll start warming up again over the weekend. overnight, look for mainly clear skies away from the coast and bay. overnight lows will range from low 50 nears the bay to mid and upper 50s in many inland locations. we'll see a little bit of fog at the coast. then tomorrow, in the south bay, look for highs of 88 in santa

rosa. 91 at morgan hill. on the peninsula, 83. redwood city, 84. 67 at pacifica. 70 at half moon bay. downtown san francisco will top out at 72 degrees tomorrow. up in the north bay, we'll see 84, novato. 89 at santa rosa. 93 at cloverdale. 88 in napa. east bay highs 78 in oakland. 80, san leandro. 81 in castro valley. the inland east baynit mid-90s everywhere. it will be hot there. and on we go to look at our temperature trend on wednesday. still warm with low to mid-90s in most inland locations. that's our summer spread. we'll see upper 70s to 80 around the bay on wednesday, and some 60s on the coast. but then we get that sharp cooldown on thursday that i mentioned with strong gusty wind as well. temperatures will drop 10 degrees or more the highs from wednesday into thursday. now let's talk about wednesday again. game three of the nba finals. warriors hosting the raptors. gametime at oracle arena is 6:00 p.m.

now news to build a better bay area from abc7. >> here are the stories making headlines at 4:30. witnesses in walnut creek say they heard a loud confrontation and saw a man running with a crowbar moments before police officers shot and killed a 23-year-old man. his name has not been released, but we have learned he was mentally ill. abc7 news reporter leslie brinkley shared this update on the bay area woman who died at a lake tahoe water fall over the weekend. leslie learned the woman ran a spa business in benicia. there has been another big data breach. answer world news sent out that quest diagnostics had their financial information potentially exposed. as the memorial grows for the virginia beach shooting victims, more people are. cog forward with their stories of survival. abc7 news reporter trevor ault shares them with us. >> today we're hearing incredible stories of heroism from survivors who were in the

carjacking. police say blood evidence at vince's apartment was linked to maleah's disappearance and he was charged with evidence tampering. a minnesota judge sentenced the man who threw a 5-year-old boy from a third floor balcony at the mall of america. emanuel rhonda showed little emotion when the judge sentenced him to 19 years in prison. the 24-year-old pleaded guilty last month to attempted premeditated first-degree murder in the april attack. he told investigator he went to the mall looking for someone to kill. the child survives but suffered severe head trauma and broken bone unexpected appearance toot at his pretrial hearing in his sexual assault case. he is accused of groping a young man at a nantucket bar in 2016. today spacey's attorney demanded access to the accuser's cell phone. he also accused prosecutors of withholding information from the defense and urged the judge to set a trial date as soon as possible. the judge says the trial will begin in the fall at the

earliest. the discrimination trial against the owner of celebrated yountville restaurant the french land have i under way in napa county. thomas keller and his restaurant group are being sued for $5 million in damages by a former employee who claimed she was denied a job transfer and ultimately let go because she was pregnant. vanessa scott allen had worked at keller's new york restaurant per se and sought a job at the french laundry. she says she hopes the trial will draw attention to the culture of misogyny in fine dining. a texas couple died from a mysterious illness while vacationing in fee. >> fiji. they became sick and new something was wrong and managed to get to the hospital. she died first and there were plans to take david to australia for more treatment, but he died before he could leave fiji. the family says early signs point to a virus that was strong enough to cripple two younger healthy people. the couple leaves behind two children. >> scary. president trump and queen

the study followed the work of a chinese scientist who tried to reproduce the mutation in twin girls, an experiment widely condemned as unethical. the cal scientists reviewed data of 4,000 people and found their death rate by age 74 was 26% higher in those who carried mutations in both copies of the gene. it's unclear how the mutations affect life span, but it suggests it makes it more likely to die from the flu. coffee lovers who drink up to 25 cups a day can rest assured the beverage is not bad for their heart. researchers tracked 8,000 people across the uk. they found drinking up to 25 was no worse for their arteries than drinking less than a cup a day. the study is being presented at the british cardiovascular society conference in manchester. although they'll become jittery. >> that's a lot of coffee. and other good news today. california has officially concluded coffee does not pose a significant cancer risk.
