ranking female brass is out after trying to set up a nice break space. >> when i reached her, amy le declined to comment for the record, but did confirm she is on paid administrative leave. sources tell maine she was in tears friday evening as she got walked off the job, her badge and county vehicle taken away. le was a captain, commander of the elmwood jail complex in milpitas. sources tell me le wanted to create a break space for correctional staff, and she used her own money to buy materials and used inmate labor to construct an arbor and barbecue grill. in 2017 another captain had used inmate labors to build arbors in a storage shed. her superiors did not like her project and when she didn't have a building permit. amy le was the first female president of the correctional peace officers association and spoke with us in 2017. >> there should be fairness for the inmates. however, there should also be fairness for the officer. >> she helped steer the

endorsement to sheriff lori smith. le was often seen at campaign events. and when smith won the election, she gave amy le a promotion to captain. le has been one of the highest paid county employees in recent years. in 2017, she received almost $450,000, including overtime and benefits on a $142,000 base salary. sources confirm amy le was the supervisor at the main jail's sally port when a mentally ill inmate was beating his head against a post inside a transport van. andy hogan suffered severe brain damage, and his parents are suing the county and the sheriff's department, accusing le and others of not preventing hogan from hurting himself. clearly there is much more to the story. how a one-time supporter of sheriff smith, one of the highest ranking women on the force, fell out of favor. we'll keep on working the story. >> what a story it is. thanks very much. new at 6:00, a woman accused of taking a stolen car on a rampage in san francisco pleaded not guilty today to 18 charges.

last wednesday police say 25-year-old cherry neil stole an suv in the tenderloin, hit two people and drove on the sidewalk. she slammed into scaffolding and several parked cars. surveillance cameras captured the scene. man was critically hurt. neil's attorney says she has mental health issues and has been off her medication for a month. >> the public defenders office, i would say 70, 80% of our clients are really mental cases and this looks like one of them. >> the district attorney's office told "the san francisco chronicle" neil had a blood test showing drugs in her system that would have impaired her ability to drive safely. a former follower of chals m charles manson was denied bail. she has had decades of good behavior. she is now 69 and has been in prison for near lly 50 years. the fast-flowing cold water

of the snow melt in the sierra may have contributed to an accidental death this weekend at lake tahoe where a woman fell from the top of a popular waterfall. stephanie espinosa lived and worked in benicia. so she was a bay area resident. today abc7 news reporter leslie brinkley spoke with the woman's mother and a friend who was with her at the scene of the tragedy. >> this is a picture of 35-year-old stephanie espinosa kayaking at lake tahoe just a few days ago. it was friday afternoon when stephanie espinosa was enjoying the view 150 feet up above emerald bay at lake tahoe. at the top of eagle falls. she waded in one of the pools when she reached for a branch and lost her footing. she vanished over the falls. rescue and dive teams found her body. initial reports indicated she might have been taking photos, but their family says that was not the case. >> stephanie didn't even have

her phone on her when she fell. she was trying to enjoy the moment. >> she gave so much of herself physically, spiritually, emotionally to other people that it was not uncommon for stephanie to just take off and go into nature because that's how she recharged. >> espinosa's business partner and best friend was with her at lake tahoe this weekend and witnessed the accident that she didn't want to relive in this interview. she says she's been inundated with calls from hundreds of espinosa's former students at blake austin college in vacaville where espinosa taught before she opened this spa, the purple door aesthetics in benicia last year. >> she catered everything to these students to what they needed. she just was a giver of everything, of love, light, knowledge. >> it's hard for espinosa's mother to cope with losing what she calls her baby girl. >> my daughter was the most beautiful free-spirited person

you would ever want to meet. she is simply amazing. she raised her two boys. she has raised marissa. she has raised my own daughter. and she is nothing but love. she is so full of love. >> espinosa's family has started a gofundme page to help support the two teenaged sons she leaves behind. you'll find a link on abc7 news news.com. in benicia, i'm leslie brinkley, abc7 news. san francisco will pay four $000 to settle a lawsuit over the fatal police shooting of mario woods. his mother sued the city after her 26-year-old son was shot and killed in 2015. police say he was suspected of stabbing a man and refused to drop his knife. officers used nonlethal force, but say woods still wouldn't stop his weapon. drop his weapon. an autopsy found he had several drugs in his system. district attorney george gascon says the use of force was unnecessary, but he could not criminally charge the officers under current law. now to a story you'll see

only on abc7 news. an oakland woman is in the hospital after being shot in the head. her family tells abc7 news reporter luz pena it happened when her sister's ex-boyfriend allegedly showed up with a gun. >> time is ticking and 26-year-old clarissa lockett is holding on to life with a bullet in her head. >> no one can explain how you feel when your kid is laying there and nothing you can do. >> doctors have told the family there is not much they can do right now. clarissa remains conscious. her sister told us clarissa is a fighter, and she is not giving up. >> she just nod her head and squeeze her hand. that's all she can do. she is suffering in that bed. >> her dad got a call on saturday from one of his daughters who told him that clarissa had been shot by one of her sister's ex-boyfriend, who ambushed them in oakland and then fled the scene. in a statement to abc7 news, oakland police confirmed they're

investigating and have a photo of the suspect and are actively searching for him. the suspect is known to the female victim. soon after the incident occurred, officers were able to confirm the identity of the suspect. a photo information was disseminated to law enforcement. meanwhile, the victim's dad hopes his daughter survives and has the message for the suspect. >> please come forward. turn yourself in. >> clarissa remains in critical but stable condition. her family confirmed that over the weekend doctors tried to remove the bullet from her head, but her brain was too swollen. they say that all they can do at this point is wait. in oakland, luz pena, abc7 news. the discrimination trial against the owner of french laundry is under way in napa county. thomas keller and his restaurant group are being sued by a former employee who claims she was denied a job transfer and ultimately let go because she was pregnant. vanessa scott allen had worked

at keller's new york restaurant and sought a job at the french laundry whose attorney says she hopes the trial will draw attention to a culture of misogyny in fine dining. a humpback whale in distress has wandered into san francisco bay. sky 7 spotted it near alameda today. we've also gotten whales in the bay before, but this one seems to be less likely lost and more likely in some kind of trouble. abc7 news reporter laura anthony is live in alameda now with the story. laura? >> hi, dan. we just saw the whale come up to the surface a few seconds ago behind me a couple of hundred yards. we have not seen this whale breach this afternoon, but it has come up to the surface every minute or so. scientists say it's an adult, probably a female and way too thin for a humpback. it's not necessarily lost, but apparently in distress.

>> despite its weight loss, as this video shows, it's been quite active. so far this year, about 70 gray whales have washed up on the west coast, including several here in the bay area. some have been malnourished, injured by ship strikes, or both. >> the gray whales are on their migration up to alaska, where as these humpback whales are here to feed. they breed in mexican waters and come up this time of year summer into fall, and they're feeding here. >> this seen in alameda's seaplane lagoon about a week ago. >> somewhere right there. >> and has become quite a draw for those wishing to take in nature's unusual show up close.

>> did you see it? >> yeah, it's incredible. i can't believe it's here. i've only seen a whale once, and it's like amazing. >> it's pretty cool. i saw it on the news. and i was like wow, that's pretty cool. >> i hope it goes to its original home and that it gets nursed back to health. >> and at this point, noah and the marine mammal center, the scientists tell us they're going to continue to monitor this animal. they're not going to do what they've done in the past say with humphrey where they actively tried to coax the animal back out to sea. this one has a clear path back out to the ocean. they're also asking any members of the public if you would like to see the whale, you're welcome to do so. come here to the shore. but they're asking folks not to get into the boat or cause any more distress for this animal. in alameda, laura anthony, abc7 news. >> yeah, that's about the last thing it needs. laura, thank you very much.

skip has pulled its electric scooters after san francisco streets after a battery fire in washington, d.c. the company wants to find out why the d.c. scooter caught fire and if it pose as risk to other scooters elsewhere. skip operates a fleet of 625 e scooters in san francisco. a skip spokesperson tells abc7 news we expect our scooters to be back on the road in the next few days. electric bikes were returned to the ford go bike system in thont. they were removed in april because of the concerns about the brakes on the bikes. abc7 news had an exclusive interview with an east bay man who says he fell from one of the electric bikes when the brakes locked up, and he ended up as you see there with a broken arm. he now has a lawsuit filed. in the east bay, the new haven teacher strike has reached double-digits now. >> it's gone on for ten school day, and there are not many of them left in the year either. so timing is getting short. we're live with negotiations.

the teacher strike in union city is now entering its third week. it's lasted longer than any other teacher strikes this year. the end of the school year is quickly moving up. oakland's teacher strike lasted seven days and in los angeles a strike ended after six days. it was the first in the district's 30 years. each time the demands have been similar, higher pay, smaller classes, and more support staff. in new haven, that's been on strike for ten school days and only ten calendar days remain in

the school year. the last di of school is june 13th. jobina fortson joins us live. jobina, any progress today? >> well, there was a surprise today. talks weren't supposed to continue until tomorrow, but the district did reach out to the union, wanting to go back to the table. so they did that around 1:00 today. i was told the talks were supposed to wrap up around 7:00. we received a release from the district which appears they stopped for today and without a resolution. >> we want justice. >> it seems like no one expected the new haven teachers strike to last this long. it's day 10, now the longest in the state. the school year there have been six. >> it's a really troubling time at the moment. i'm really trying to figure fig out what the plan is. >> matthew lamb is a senior. in case he and his classmates never return to school, the district plans to calculate grades use league different data points.

>> we're going look at the current grade sitting in the student information right now. we're going to take a look at the fourth quarter deficiency grades, and we're going to take a look at their third quarter grades. >> the highest of the three numbers will be used as the grade for second semester. >> i think this way is a safe, legal way to do that. >> we said very clearly when we started this, we knew it was not an easy path. but we knew we had to stay in solidarity. >> that's the president of the new haven teachers association, making it clear the strike won't stop until they get what they want. the union is calling for a 6% raise, 3% eachat's down from th initially asked for. >> nhca has moved a lot, for sure. but they started way high. >> in a surprise move monday, the district offered to go back to the table. that wasn't supposed to happen until tuesday. >> any time there is talk, it's always hopeful. but you know from what i've been hearing about how the superintendent has been behaving and the games the district has been playing, it's really kind of sad.

>> at the moment, the district is offering a 2% raise. the district tells me that graduation will not be impact beside i the strike. they're going to use the principals to help coordinate with students for the practice schedules. the ceremony is slated for june 15th, the last day of school is scheduled for everybody else on june 13th. for now reporting in union city tonight, jobina fortson, abc7 news. >> thank you. an explosion in a chemical plant in santa clara county over the weekend has the drivers of hydrogen fuel vehicles going nowhere fast. abc7 news reporter melanie woodrow is live at a hydrogen fueling station in south san francisco tonight with the affect on consumers. melanie? >> we're talking about hundreds, if not thousands of consumers here in the bay area. a lot of them showing up here tonight as they get off of work and they need to fuel up. the hydrogen supplier tells me because of this explosion, they've decided to pull all of their supply vehicles off the roads to make certain that they

are safe. and that means those drivers that are showing up here are seeing messages like this one, dispenser unavailable. it's supposed to be the fuel of the future. but along with innovation, there are growing pains. hydrogen fueling stations across the bay area like this one are down today. >> which is a pain. what can i say? but if more people were using these, it would be more available and any sort of problem would be less of an issue. >> the issue stems from a chemical plant explosion this weekend at hydrogen supplier air products and chemicals incorporated in santa clara county. dr. shane stephens is a founding partner of true zero, which owns seven of the bay area's hydrogen refueling stations. >> i think when you're bringing a new fuel online, you're obviously at a little bit of a disadvantage, because the infrastructure and the supply chain for that fuel is not as mature and not as robust as for example gasoline, which has been

around for more than 100 years. >> stephens estimates there are 3,000 to 3500 fuel cell vehicles in the bay area. he expects as many as one thousand true zero customers will be impacted this week, and anticipates true zero will be able to get some of its stations back online in the coming days. hansen says despite the hiccup, she still loves her hydrogen fueled vehicle. >> i would absolutely get another one, i must say. >> in the meantime, she plans to use her husband's gas-fueled vehicle instead. we reached out to the three car manufacturers of hydrogen fueled vehicles. they all got back to us. honda says they're offering customers free rentals, and it won't impact their 21-day allowance. they say customers should contact customer service. toyota says they're doing the same thing on a case-by-case basis, and hyundai tells us they're monitoring the situation closely. in south san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc7 news. >> all right, melanie, thank you. all right. time to check on our weather because that temperature is

heading up. >> you can really feel it today. getting steamy. spencer christian is here. >> it's going get even steamier the next couple of days. live doppler 7, we have a little bit of fog at the coast, beginning to push slightly out over the bay. and 24-hour temperature change shows many of our inland areas are 7 to about 11 degrees warmer than they were this hour yesterday. but closer to the coast, you can see san francisco and half moon bay are a couple of degrees cooler than at this time yesterday. here comes the fog. looking southward from mount tam. it's beginning to make its push. 57 degrees in. 68 in oakland. 78 mountain view. 82 at morgan hill. 54 at half moon bay. looking from the opposite direction from sutro tower, see the fog bush pushing over san francisco. 70 at napa. 82 at fairfield. 89 at raqqahville. concord and livermore low 80s as well. and the view from east bay hills shows a wide expense of low clouds pushing along the coastline. we'll have summer-like heat the

next couple of day, especially in the inland areas. but it will turn sharply cool were windy conditions on thursday and friday, and then start warming up again over the weekend. overnight look for mainly clear skies away from the coast. overnight lows will generally be in the low to mid-50s. a bit on the milder in the inland east bay where lows will drop only to the mid- to upper 50s. high temperatures ranging from 70 to half moon bay to 72 in san francisco. 78 in oakland. 94 at concord and antioch. 93 at livermore. close. and 88 at san jose. 89 up north at santa rosa. so all around the bay area it's going to be quite a warm-up. and wednesday looks almost identical to tomorrow in terms of the temperature change. mid-60s a the coast. upper 70s near the by and mid-90s inland once again. there is the sharp cooldown i told you on thursday under windy conditions. most locations will have temperatures about 10 to 12 degrees lower than tomorrow's and wednesday's. wednesday, by the way, game three of the nba finals.

40-year-old dewayne craddock had worked with the public utilities department for 15 years. his coworkers are have been sharing gripping stories of what unfolded just hours after he mailed in his resignation. >> we pushed a metal filing cabinet against the door, and he fired four times. two of the bullets almost came through the back of the cabinet and left bulges. >> 12 people died in the shooting. craddock was killed during a shootout with police. there is no word on a motive. the estranged husband of a missing connecticut mother along with his girlfriend have been arrested. the two appeared in court and are accused of evidence tampering. jennifer dulos disappeared more than a week ago after dropping off her car at school. her car was later found abandoned. investigators were found digging at a park two miles from where the estranged husband currently lives. body found in arkansas is sadly confirmed to be that of maleah davis. the 4-year-old houston girl who

was reported missing last month. derrion vence was arrested last month in connection with this case. he initially told police maleah was abducted during a carjacking. police say blood evidence at vence's apartment was linked to maleah's apartment and he was charged with evidence tampering. there are calls for banning or limiting cruise ships after a crash at the hasher in venice, italy. the terrifying moments were caught on camera yesterday as the massive ship came racing and hitting a dock and a tourist boat injuring several people. look at that. investigators say the msc opera cruise ship had an engine failure so it was unable to stop. president trump and queen elizabeth exchanged toasts at buckingham palace today at an elaborate state dinner held in honor of the president and first lady. it's just the third time ever an american president has had a full state reception in the uk. abc7 news reporter julia macfarlane is in london with the highlights. >> president trump receiving a

retirement is supposed to be the ultimate stress reducer, right? but it didn't quite work out that way for university of california employee. >> no. 7 on your side of course stepped in to help, though. >> so much for golden years. at least at the beginning of this. the retiree says her blood pressure increased each time her monthly retirement check failed to arrive in the mail. she said making matters worse, no one could tell her when her benefits would begin. brenda williams proudly shows off the two awards she received for exemplary work from the university of california. each award came with a $500 bonus. these are photos from brenda's retirement party given to her by her coworkers. for 17 years, she worked at the space science division at uc berkeley and the lawrence hall of science. unfortunately, her retirement hasn't gone as planned.
