what would you do if your neighbor had a swastika in his front yard? >> i'm amanda del castillo. i just stepped out of an hours long meeting where people are pushing for the city to approve flying a pride flag over city hall. >> i'm kate larson in oakland where hundreds of graduating seniors are being awarded more than $2 million in scholarship money. abc news starts right now. >> announcer: now, news to build a better bay area. from abc7. >> will they or won't they? right now dublin is debating whether to raise the pride flag for june. >> abc7 news reporter amanda del castillo is there live tonight. amanda? >> reporter: dan, that meeting started at 7:00 and i stepped out just moments ago. city council is still deliberating on whether it will fly a pride flag over dublin city hall.

now, councilmembers were taking their time to apologize to the lgbtq community and that's going on right now. they say they are sorry for what happened two weeks ago. there could soon be more color over dublin city hall. its recognition of the lgbtq community many did not think would come. >> i was really concerned it wouldn't. after two weeks ago, hearing so many people against the pride flag being flown, i was really concerned that that really was the sentiment of the majority of our city. >> reporter: two weeks ago sfi leaders voted 3-2 rejecting a proposal to fly a pride flag over city hall for pride month. >> we took a vote and voted it down, not because we don't support the lgbtq community. we couldn't decide best how to do it. >> reporter: the city developed and adopted an a official policy regarding flags tuesday night. more than 30 people spoke publicly, many in support of the policy, pushing the city to raise the rainbow flag. many even wearing the rainbow flag. >> we exist everywhere,

including dublin. >> reporter: this was not the case back in may when most shared comments, others have since called disturbing. comments city council didn't immediately denounce. >> you allowed people to spread lies and bigotry and hatred. >> reporter: dublin's mayor agrees. >> we don't that, i didn't do that. i failed to do that and to sort of stand up and protect people who felt intimidated. >> reporter: now, that policy was unanimously approved by council. this is huge. of the only flags to fly over dublin in city hall have been the city, state and american flags. but after the decision is being made tonight, that could soon change. in dublin, i'm amanda del castillo, abc7 news. >> amanda, thank youch. also in the ee base tonight, an unexpected and shocking site. a massive swastika in the front yard of a home in el sebranta. .

of everybody on the street. >> reporter: the swastika replaced a dirt lot in johnson's yard. this is what the same area looked like earlier this year from google earth. neighbor mary salinas is defending johnson. >> i look at his behavior and attitude towards us. we have never had any problem because it's the one next door to us. it's always nice to us. that's what i can say. >> reporter: law enforcement meantime says they're not investigating. in el sebrante, alicia amin galesian, abc7 news. >> in el sebrante they had windows smashed. we saw at least four with broken passenger side windows. the number of vehicles vandalized could be more than 50. >> an oakland man has been arrested and being accused of impersonating a police officer. this is video you're watching now of sergio taylor being taken into comfort difficult over the weekend in san leandro. he was convicted last year of the same crime. investigators say they found

[ applause ] >> reporter: as a senior at oakland's military institute, jorge was commander of the

700-person student body and is now headed to u.c. berkeley in the fall. the scholarship is especially meaningful to his parents who were new to the u.s. and homeless while jorge's mother was pregnant with him. >> they wanted to make sure that when i was born that i would have the resources needed and ready for me so i can become successful. >> reporter: thanks to the scholarship money, about $2,000 a year, the students telling me they'll be able to pay for college necessities like textbooks, meal plans and housing. >> this definitely puts a little bit of weight off our shoulders. >> reporter: angela was born in oakland and raised by her mother and grandmother. she graduated from castle mont high school and is headed to dream school u.c. davis which is not the path all her peers took. >> oakland, think about graduating and getting straight to work, a lot of people do that. that's why the culture -- >> reporter: 35 students received scholarships from warriors head coach steve kerr who donated his speaking fees to the nonprofit. in oakland, kate larson, abc7 news. >> more to come here from bad to worse.

update. these are live pictures of city councilmembers raising the pride flag over city hall. this came after hours of debate tonight and a unanimous vote after originally deciding not to display the pride flag. a lot of controversy about it, lot of pushback, so the council changed its decision and now as you can see, the pride flag is going up the pole at dublin city hall. >> to cheers, people cheering.
