>> i'm amanda del castillo. in san jose. how a program and high school teens are hoping to build a better bay area. "abc7 news" starts right now. breaking news in santa rosa where three people, including a child, were shot tonight at a park. >> it happened around 7:30 at jacobs park near link lane and west 9th street. police say hundreds of people were gathered there for several soccer games. >> the three people shot are ages 10, 20, and 40. witnesses say there was a "gang related confrontation" just before the shooting. a man got out of the car and fired several shots. >> a soccer coordinator said a coach was one of the vims. the coach described to him what happened. >> the car turns around, the guy gets out and starts shooting. he was the one that got shot. he was just about to walk in, and the kids were walking by, as well. >> the 10 and 40-year-old's

injuries are not life threatening. the 20-year-old is apparently gravely injured. the wound is life threatening. the suspects drove off. a reward up to $2500 is being offered at this moment for information leading to an arrest. in the north bay, an animal rights activist says he was nearly decapitated while protesting at a duck farm this week. >> "abc7 news" reporter kate larson is live at that duck farm with the story. kate? >> reporter: dan, ama, we're here at the duck farm, and you can see on the gate that they have signs keep out, biosecure area. monday, a group of protestors entered any way. what they did was most certainly at their own risk. video sent to abc 7 by activist group direct action everywhere

shows protesters crying out for help, as the duck processing line they're chained too starts to move. panic sent in when it started pulling thomas' head and check into a pole. >> almost decapitated my head. i was struggling to get out. >> reporter: he spoke to us via facetime. he was one of hundreds who took buses there to protest the duck farm on monday. but he was part of a smaller group who entered the farm through marked fences and shackled them several to the machinery. he knew that locking himself to the machine was dangerous, did it for a reason. >> this is a global crisis we're umtd. >> reporter: he does not know who turned the conveyer belt on. but he says his injuries will heal.

he's still deciding whether to file a police report. >> whoever was working there was extremely upset that we were disrupting his business. >> reporter: the sheriff's office told me that they looked into the incident. the farm told them it was an accident, and that the employee who turned on the machine inside was unaware the protesters were chained to it outside. i knocked on a door at the edge of the farm's property, but nobody answered or returned my calls. abc 7's i-team looked into animal abuse allegations at the farm in 2014 after an activist got a job there and shot video. on monday, deputies arrested 80 protesters. most of whom booked into jail on felony conspiracy and were released this evening after court. i also spoke to the district attorney's office today who tells me they are still deciding whether or not to file charges against the activist. i'm kate larson, "abc7 news."

>> what a story, kate. thank you. happening now, travel troubles at lax because of a power outage. power was restored to one remaining terminal still in the dark. systems are being rebooted. but 21 flits reason kaled and nine diverted. the cause of the outage is still under investigation. building a better bay area in san jose. neighbors met with officials, but the meeting got heated. cornell bernard is live with the details. >> reporter: neighbors here in south san jose say all they want is to sleep through the night, but loud freight trains are keeping them up. now the they yomayor is threatee sue the railroad if the trains don't stop. that's the sound that's literally keeping residents in south san jose up at night. how bad is it?

>> really bad. it's loud. it scares the cat. >> reporter: union pacific freight trains rolling through between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. it's causing thousands of residents to lose hours of sleep. >> i hear the horn. it wakes us up in our household. >> reporter: several hundred neighbors came to this meeting where officials explained why it started rerouting trains through neighborhoods in february. >> we are obligated to run those trains at a certain time at night because of the capacity that exists throughout the day. >> but many just want the nighttime trains to stop. the mayor says it's becoming a public health issue. >> this is a significant health issue for residents who can't sleep. >> reporter: but railroad officials say they won't stop the trains. >> short answer is no.

role in building a better bay area. in the south bay, a program in downtown san jose is putting art by local high school students in unexpected places. reporter amanda del castillo has the story. >> reporter: if you've ever wanted to know what's on the minds of high school students, the south bay has those thoughts on full display. the artwork you see here, part of the downtown doors program by the downtown san jose foundation. >> utility doors and boxes, other spaces of whimsy. >> reporter: this year, more than 200 high school students competed to have their artwork digitized and put on spaces across downtown san jose. these are two of 20 winning student artists. besides bringing color to the city's core, both say it's helping to build a better bay area. >> it gives downtown life i feel like, its own unique signature sense of place. >> reporter: students say downtown doors opens the door to conversation. women empowerment, culture, social justice.
