car seconds before it's fully submerged. at least two firefighters diving into that flash flooding. >> i am like all the way up to my hips in water. >> reporter: it wasn't just too much water too fast filling homes and streets, at least eight reported tornadoes including this one crossing the road just in front of this man and his car. an ef-1 tornado, winds up to 85 miles per hour flipping cars at the baton rouge general hospital. the torturous storms dropping nearly a half foot of rain in and around oklahoma city. at least 21 water rescues in just two hours in okc alone. in tulsa up to five inches of rain fell in just a few hours. >> yeah, it was really crazy. i had to climb out of my window. >> reporter: all this draining into the arkansas river, already reaching its highest levels ever recorded earlier this week. so the arkansas river will eventually drain into the mississippi river and that's why this morning there are evacuations being ordered for places in arkansas or at least recommended because they're concerned about this water as it moves down river, but there are

also more moisture and more floods for kentucky. the flood alerts still up in southern alabama. but conway is the town we're really watching as this water drains down. a lot of tropical moisture moving to the east is welcome because western north carolina through south carolina, georgia, even the panhandle of florida, some major deficits rain-wise. in some places it could be a nightmare this weekend. george? >> ginger, thanks very much. the latest on president trump. this morning he leaves europe for washington where his team is locked in negotiations with mexico to see if they can reach a deal on controlling the border before trump's monday deadline for new tariffs on mexican imports. overnight the president laid down a hard line and had some harsh words for house speaker nancy pelosi in a new interview and our chief white house correspondent jon karl has the details. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, george. the president returns to the white house later today with time running out to strike a deal with mexico. in an effort to convince president trump not to impose tariffs, the mexican foreign minister announced a significant

concession. mexico will send 6,000 of its national guard troops to its southern border in an effort to stop the flow of migrants coming from central america through mexico on the way to the united states. >> we don't have yet an agreement. >> reporter: the mexican foreign minister has been in washington all week meeting at the white house, the state department and with members of congress. meanwhile, the president weighed in from abroad. >> they're letting millions of people walk up through their country. >> reporter: at a solemn ceremony honoring veterans of normandy the president defended his threat on tariffs. a plan key republicans in congress are threatening to block. >> tariffs are a beautiful thing. republicans should love what i'm doing. >> reporter: the president says he will go through with his threatened 5% tariff on monday and that he will continue to raise the tariffs every month this summer until mexico stops

the flood of illegal immigration at the southern border. in an interview at the american cemetery in normandy, france, the president also leveled some of his harshest attacks yet at speaker pelosi. >> she's incapable of doing deals. she is a nasty, vindictive, horrible person. >> reporter: pelosi who was also in normandy at the time recently told members of her party she wants to see trump in prison. but in france she struck a different tone. >> with all due respect to your question, i'm not here to talk about impeachment. >> reporter: if the president follows through on his threat to impose tariffs, he will face significant opposition here at home. not only are fellow republicans threatening to try to block the tariffs through congressional votes, the president's almost certain to face legal challenges if he goes through with them. george? >> so very high stakes for these negotiations today. meanwhile, in other political news, a pretty dramatic shift from former vice president joe biden on the issue of federal funding for abortions. >> reporter: yeah, this is the so-called hyde amendment which bans federal funds for abortion, something that's been a part of congressional spending bills for years.

biden has said he supports the amendment and said that as recently as wednesday but now says he no longer supports them. he was facing increasing pressure from fellow democrats criticizing his position. he explains it as a result of all the efforts republicans are now making to restrict abortion rights. george? >> okay, jon, thanks very much. michael? >> thank you george. now to that rescue on mt. rainier. four climbers trapped for days finally rescued from deadly conditions and now they're speaking out about what they went through. abc's clayton sandell has the story. good morning, clayton. >> reporter: good morning, michael. these were four very experienced climbers but even they were no match for the extreme weather, stuck in harrowing conditions forced to wait three days for a rescue. this morning, four climbers missing for three days in freezing conditions, nearly 14,000 feet up the side of mt. rainier are finally safe. rescuers taking advantage of a tiny window of good weather to pluck the men from extreme cold, ferocious winds and pelting snow. >> this location here is extremely exposed.

you have 50-mile-an-hour winds sweeping down from the top of the mountain and it's very steep. >> reporter: the climbers stranded around 13,000 feet after setting up camp when one man began suffering from severe altitude sickness and exhaustion. conditions quickly worsened. >> that night the storm hit, just really high winds and breaking the tent, ripping the tent. in the morning, everybody was hypothermic because the night was really cold. i found out my backpack had slipped down the slope. lost one sleeping bag, lost my backpack which had a shovel in it so lost that. had the gps in it. >> reporter: the group called 911. rangers responding immediately but the nasty weather grounding any rescue attempts from the air. >> we made five attempts by air. >> they tried to swoop in and land but they just couldn't get it in there because the wind was blowing in that direction so they tried several times and then they left. >> reporter: the group took cover in an ice cave.

>> this is a low spot on the top of the mountain, a place that is more sheltered. when we landed our helicopter they were able to just walk on. >> reporter: the climbers suffering from exposure and frostbite immediately rushed to the hospital now listed in satisfactory condition. officials say the group's climbing skills and preparation were the key factors in helping them survive. cecelia? >> really incredible ordeal there. okay, clayton, thank you. we turn to a threat in new york city. a man under arrest accused of plotting an attack after he asked about buying grenades and discussed the possibility of detonating them right here in times square. he was intercepted and officials say he posed no imminent threat. he is not believed to be linked to any other people or a larger plot and he is expected in a court in brooklyn later today. we're going to turn to the investigation this morning into that deadly training accident at west point. one cadet was killed and 19 cadets and two soldiers injured when a five-ton vehicle rolled over. abc's gio benitez is right there

at west point in upstate new york with the latest. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, cecilia, good morning. investigators are here from alabama to figure out what caused that cargo truck to roll over. we know that it was heading toward a training site, transporting those cadets, driving through rough terrain as part of that training when the accident happened. again, one cadet was killed. 19 other cadets injured. two soldiers were also in that truck and were injured. let's go ahead and show you what this truck looked like. this is a similar model that weighs five tons. the superintendent here says this kind of accident is not common even with that rough terrain as part of the training. now, we know that those injured cadets and those injured soldiers are doing well this morning because we know they suffered only minor injuries, but no doubt all of west point right now is thinking about that cadet who lost their life. george? >> we certainly are. gio, thanks very much. we have new developments in the search for that missing connecticut mom. her estranged husband's

girlfriend has met with investigators and the state's attorney. abc's whit johnson is in stamford, connecticut, with the latest. good morning, whit. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. the criminal investigation now ramping up after the arrest of jennifer dulos' estranged husband accused of discarding bloodstained evidence. police say they received more than 225 tips and 70 video clips from homes and businesses. still no sign of the missing mom. this morning, the search is intensifying for 50-year-old connecticut mother of five jennifer dulos two weeks after she mysteriously disappeared. abc news has confirmed that michelle troconis, the girlfriend of dulos' estranged husband fotis, met with detectives and her lawyer thursday afternoon. troconis out on bail charged with evidence tampering related to the case. >> do you know where she is? >> you tend to look at people who may be a little less culpable. you want to approach them first. >> reporter: investigators are now revisiting two key locations

searching for evidence at fotis' mansion and a garbage incinerator. >> if you think about somebody committing a murder and you need to find out, first of all, where they committed it. >> reporter: jennifer and fotis dulos had been embroiled in a bitter custody battle since she filed for divorce in june 2017. and just four days after she went missing, fotis filed for full custody of the children. >> where is jennifer? >> reporter: this morning fotis remains behind bars. police say surveillance footage shows people matching the descriptions of him and troconis throwing away multiple garbage bags containing items that later tested positive for jennifer's blood. our abc affiliate wtnh is reporting that fotis dulos' divorce attorney has asked to be withdrawn from the case. both dulos and troconis are expected back here in court next tuesday. michael? >> all right, thank you so much, whit, for that. now to an incredibly close call. take a look at this.

that's a piece of a plane, an airplane door to be exact, that fell from the sky hitting an apartment building and a car in las vegas. thankfully no one was injured. it's unclear what kind of plane it fell from. it doesn't appear to be a civilian aircraft. the faa is looking into the incident. from the planes to the nba, they go together, i guess. now to the nba finals, the raptors -- or warriors will try to even up the series with the raptors and welcome back one of their injured stars. they are down one fan because an investor in the team was seen on camera, of course, shoving a player, a raptors player, during game three. t.j. holmes is in oakland with all the details. good morning, t.j. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you, strahan. i'm actually sitting in the seat where that fan was when he pushed kyle lowry. he reached over two seats to push a player. now, to give you an idea, i'm sitting here, just look how close some of these fans sit to

that nba action. well, this incident now, that shove, has set off not just a conversation but really it has set off a huge debate about what fans should and shouldn't do and also the rights of someone like an owner who is a billionaire really pushing a millionaire. that has set off a debate that lebron james has jumped into. >> goes crashing into the fans. >> reporter: the outrage continues over this moment at game three of the nba finals. it started when kyle lowry late in the game with the raptors well ahead chased a loose ball into the crowd when this warriors fan is seen shoving him away. >> holy cow. >> he pushed him off. >> reporter: that fan, we now know, is this man, mark stevens, a minority owner of the warriors. >> he had no reason to touch me. he had no reason to reach over two seats and say some vulgar language to me. >> reporter: the backlash fast and furious.

an outraged lebron james took to instagram saying, just think to yourself, what if kyle lowry would have reacted and put his hands back on him. you guys would be going crazy. king james adding the #privilegeaintwelcomehere. >> he's always been an activist and he sticks up for his fellow players. it sucks that this has to take the front page of the finals. >> reporter: the warriors' steph curry also came to lowry's defense. >> obviously an unfortunate situation it all the way around. credit kyle the way he handled it. a lot of different reactions you could have had but he handled it correctly. >> reporter: the league has banned stevens from nba games for a year and fined him $500,000 for pushing and directing obscene language towards lowry. stevens in a statement saying, he attempted to reach out to lowry saying i made a mistake and i'm truly sorry. i need to do better and look forward to making it right. and fans, all of them sitting in these first several rows, get a

card in their seat explaining to them and reminding them of the fan code of conduct when they are at these games. and, again, they pretty much, strahan, get a warning when you're sitting this close you need to be aware you're that close to the action and need to be aware of how you need to behave and what could happen. on that injury update, we expect klay thompson to play tonight. kevin durant, though, is out still for the warriors for this very critical game four. >> klay is a big addition back in the lineup for those guys. t.j., if you need a card to tell you how to act in the front row of the game, maybe you shouldn't have those seats. >> yeah. >> you know, you make a very good point but some of the fans are this close to the action. if you're not paying attention, these are athletes. these are big guys who go flying oftentimes into the stands. you have to be aware and they give you a heads-up about it. whether you think he just had a bad moment or what, but he -- there's no reason for that. can you imagine if kyle lowry would have reacted and defended himself how different our story would be this morning?

>> reporter: the 39-year-old sharing home footage on a youtube channel called the smiths. >> i did it, momma. >> okay. >> i did it, pa. >> you did it. >> i did it, pa. >> you did it. >> reporter: the tragedy coming nearly a year after the daughter of olympic skier bode miller emmeline also drowned. the family vocal advocates for preventing more deaths like this posting this video of their 8-month-old son learning to float. these cases aren't isolated. the cdc reporting in recent years drowning was tied as the leading cause of death for children, aged 1 to 4. >> yeah, and as we enter the summer months it's so important to remember. have two other sons, 7 and 5, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire smith family. >> what a hard thing for that family. amy, before you go, you have a note on a story we covered yesterday. >> before we move on, we reported on gretchen carlson stepping down as chair of the

miss america board. we mistakenly reported that carlson said she will no longer be a board member at the request of the board. in fact, both carlson and the miss america organization confirmed the board did not ask her to step down as chair or leave the board but did ask her to stay on as an adviser after she decided to resign. we regret the error. all right. we'll move on now to the new developments in the mysterious death of three americans in the dominican republic. investigators there now releasing preliminary autopsy results. tom llamas is just back from the d.r. with the story. good morning, tom. >> reporter: michael, good morning to you. we were hoping to have more clarity by now and though we have new details this morning, the spark that set off those medical emergencies at a popular vacation destination remains a mystery. this morning, preliminary autopsy results for those three american tourists who died in the dominican republic are now raising more questions than answers. the report released by the d.r.'s public ministry office indicating 41-year-old miranda

werner suffered a type of cardiac arrest that led to respiratory failure at the bahia principe resort. werner died in her room just two hours after checking in with her husband. her family saying she experienced acute physical distress and collapsed immediately after having a drink from the mini bar. just five days later, 63-year-old nathaniel holmes and his fiancee, 49-year-old cynthia day, were found dead inside their room at an adjoining property at the resort. >> you got the video? >> yes. >> you got to do something. >> reporter: this video shows them kayaking a day before they died. authorities in the dominican republic citing pre-existing health conditions, saying holmes and day had enlarged hearts and livers and also say blood pressure medicine was found inside of the room along with an opioid and anti-inflammatory medication. preliminary autopsy findings showing they both died from organ and respiratory failure. but it's still unclear what led

to the fatal medical issues in all three cases. the d.r.'s minister of tourism suggesting all three deaths could have been coincidences, an unfortunate series of events. the minister saying they regularly inspect hotels for safety, examining their hygiene, kitchens and ventilation systems. and moments ago the families of cynthia day and nathaniel holmes sent us this statement thanking the community and promising an update as soon as they have new information, and sadly, they're warning of a fake gofundme page. the one the families are using is entitled lost family member. >> thank you so much, tom. we'll bring in chief medical correspondent dr. jennifer ashton. i wanted to ask you, some of the autopsy results point to changes in the body. so what do you make of that? >> well, this is not a surprise to anyone in the medical profession, michael. the things that we're hearing in the preliminary autopsy report are changes that are caused by death. they are not the cause of death.

those are very, very different things and these are changes that we expect to see postmortem. so no surprises there. >> we heard tom talk about the report in these underlying conditions. is that that unusual? >> i was just saying to george, this in my opinion is a true, true and unrelated -- people can have chronic conditions that eventually can contribute to their death but the chronic conditions that were mentioned in this preliminary autopsy report, not something that you would expect to cause sudden death in people who are well enough to be on vacation. again, really doesn't kind of add up. >> what more do we need to know? >> we need the toxicology report. that could take four to six weeks. there are some substances that potentially may not be detectable on toxicology reports because you're looking at bodily fluids and tissues but that will be really important and again, someone can suffer a cardiac arrest or organ failure as a result of something else, so there are still some missing

us about. some news to get to beginning with that deadly flooding in the south. eight tornadoes reported in three states as that severe weather moves east this morning. let's go back to ginger tracking the latest. good morning, ginger. >> good morning, george. i think we should all start by saying a big thank you to the baton rouge fire department because look at this rescue. they see this car nearly submerged, jumping in there. getting the woman out just seconds before the car goes all the way under and these are the type of rescues that were ongoing yesterday. from there to oklahoma where there were dozens of rescues too. 3 to of rain fell within a couple of hours and so flash flooding was one of the main concerns. then there was this, a tornado crossing the road right in front of this guy trying to go back from work. so the tornado and there were eight reported tornadoes, by the way, this one did damage at the baton rouge general hospital so you can see the flipped cars there. where will we see that today? southeast. so areas that have been so dry

any act that might get rid of it is met with applause from all sides. the fcc voted to allow telephone companies to block illegal robocalls before they ever even reach our phones. some 5 billion robocalls are placed every month with each of us receiving an average of 76 calls. that's more than two calls a day. the fcc commissioner says he even gets them and, quote, he hates them as much as you do. >> i signed up for that do not call registry. >> that do not call registry actually does work. the thing is, it only works for legal robocalls like the one from banks and other legitimate businesses but nearly half of robocalls are illegal which means the registry doesn't block them. so this decision would add a new level of protection that we can all appreciate. >> sure can. >> cheering that on. you guys are dog owners. should have brought them to work today. >> you're lucky we didn't. >> we'll tell you how dogs can improve your heart health up ahead and lara is upstairs. >> i wanted to be with the puppies but better, i have alessia cara.

at that age now where they always -- like ad nauseam blurt out these lines from some film i did so lately, i did a voice in "madagascar" two years ago and the guy who is the penguin turns to the monkey and says, i'd like to kiss you, monkey man which tom mcgraff voiced that, the director and they say it to me like 90 times a day. >> it's cute. >> i say to them, you know, there is a fire alarm and we need to leave the apartment. i'd like to kiss you, monkey man. endless. >> let's talk about the new "framing john delorean." it's kind of s twist on a documentary. what is the idea behind it? >> don argott and sheena joyce, the directors did a documentary film that i loved called "the art of the steal" about the acquisition of the barnes collection by the philadelphia museum. one of my favorite documentaries of all time. i met them and i said, i want to do something with you so they asked me to play delorean in the

reenactment footage embedded inside the documentary. >> he was this guy who made a car back in the 1970s, '80s. >> delorean was an executive at gm who was the guy that launched the gto and thought people in america would want a street high performance car and gambled on that and got them to gamble on it and won. but then he left gm which he might have become the head of. he had a career at gm that was unstoppable and left because he wanted to have his own car. so he designed and built the delorean, the car from "back to the future." very iconic car but got himself in a lot of trouble which everybody knows, trying to sell cocaine to finance his company. >> oops. >> that's what i said. she's in the front row looking at me, what? >> you guys want to see a little bit of it? >> yes. [ applause ] >> wait, what are you doing? you're doing a movie? >> we do reenactment footage of delorean's drama, his caper, his escapades and shoot them as a movie and cut it into a movie

about delorean and what he did and what he went through. and the good news is i don't have to bother with any of that. they do. i just go put the makeup on and go try to be delorean. [ applause ] >> so you're at home and at work at the same time. >> my wife is always asking where are you now? >> i need help with these kids. >> right, get back here. >> the character -- you get into character there. i know a lot of people have been trying to make a movie about john delorean for years. he actually called you before he passed away. >> there was a period when they were going to make films about john's life maybe two or three in the mid to early '90s. he called me on the phone an he said -- i can't do it now because i have a bit of a cold.

but delorean with his michigan accent, alec, i'd like you to play me in the movie about my -- >> wow. >> the movie never got made but oddly enough as many of you probably know, john's estate he was living in towards the end of his life is now the trump golf course in bedminster, new jersey and john's mansion is the clubhouse. >> worlds collide. >> you're done with trump, right? >> i'd like to be done in terms of it crashes all my weekends. i go home i'm in bed by like 3:00 in the morning at the end of the show and my kids are up at 5:30 in the morning. i don't need to explain to you about how daddy's hours affect his family life. any of you. so, no, but i mean -- people always don't remember that, you know, doing that show -- they're my dear friends and lorne is my dear friend. whether i go back or not, i don't know, but i need to go to work and make some money to pay for all my children. you. the american heart association is encouraging people to bring their dogs to work every friday in june. >> i'm doing it. >> i know. when you see "gma," we all have puppies from now on, you'll know why. >> exactly. >> pets at work. why is that a good idea? >> it's interesting. this is the first time a major health organization and the american heart association taking the lead on this is working with a pet initiative because we know when we go home and we see our friends -- and by the way not just dogs but any pet that it just improves our mood and when you talk about the workplace, social connection and mood are kind of important to being productive so it's kind of a no-brainer. put the two together. i had mason in the control room before. he was -- >> there's michael our executive producer. that was hair and makeup. >> amazing. >> so it improved the mood of the studio already. >> there's a specific link between hetpets and heart health.
