it's sunday, june 9th. good morning and thank you so much for waking up with us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with the accu-weather forecast. here's meteorologist lisa argen tracking live doppler 7. >> good morning, hi, everyone. a hue few clouds out there and print of sunshine. what a gorgeous view from walnut creek. you see the ohio clouds, the sun up. right now, we have a spare the air alert today. moderate air quality to poor air quality in the southern santa clara valley due to the heat. we still have a red flag warning for the upper elevations of the north bay throughout the day. the winds are a little bit gusty now. and a heat advisory for the area including san francisco where temperatures will be in the upper 80s. about 100 inland today. finally in the south bay, you can see the high clouds, a nice way to start the morning, don't

you think? here's a look at current conditions. 62 in the city. 57 in morgan hill. already quite mild in the 60s and from sutro, there's the sun coming up. air quality, not the greatest today. we're right in the middle of this heat wave mid 70s todmy 80s, then look at the darker shades coming into play in our inland east bay. hotter today, we're looking at records perhaps and then as we go through the evening, not a lot of relief out there. still in the night by dinnertime. and we have more heat on the way for your monday. chris? >> lisa, thank you. developing news. a fire continues to burn this morning in yolo county forcing families from their homes as it tears through 1,700 acres. this is new video overnight of the sand fire that broke out amid red flag warnings. cal fire says some structures have been damaged, but it's unknown if those are homes. the fire is near the small towns

including rumsey along highway 16. we have more. >> reporter: helen mcclosky watches intensely as a helicopter circles above her house. the mccloskys are trying to figure out how serious the sand fire is that's burning around them. >> we've been packing with no idea how bad this is. >> reporter: until a sheriff's deputy tells them it's time to leave. >> you guys are aware of the -- of the mandatory evacuation? >> is it mandatory? >> yes. >> this is the new form. >> reporter: helen and pete have to evacuate with their six dogs. >> only took a f say no matter how much they plan it's tough. >> the biggest concern, of course, is losing the farm and house and everything. of course we're under insured. just because we haven't gotten it together. >> reporter: cal fire says the sand fire broke out just after

2:30 p.m. pushed along by strong winds and the dry heat. >> the fires are getting through there -- >> reporter: aerial crews were trying to locate the areas that firefighters needed to tackle first. when the fire jumped highway 16, the main road through this area, it prompted mandatory evacuations. the mccloskys got no e-mail or text alerts which they say are important because getting out isn't as easy as people would think. >> there's one road in, one road out, highway 16. if the casino had to evacuate, you could kiss off that end of bu, rea. won't maintain the road. it could be a deathtrap. >> abc7 news. >> pg&e is precautions and shut in parts of the north bay yesterday and is now in the process of restoring power. areas with power being restored include parts of unincorporated

lake beresa, napa county, portions of suisun city, vacaville, and yolo county. late last night pg&e revised guidance for the sierra foothills. they turned off power for 16 in butte and yuba. but people in placer and el dorado are keeping their power for now while pg&e keeps an eye on things. cornual barnard spoke to napa residents impacted by the outages. >> they're early and it's not okay. >> reporter: margarita sanchez is picking up her parents because their home near lake ber beresa has no power. >> no power, no internet, no nothing. so we've got to go. >> reporter: pg&e cut power early saturday to 1,600 customers in high fire-danger areas of the north bay due to red flag conditions. >> i'm pretty sure they know what they're doing. >> reporter: the pool at this mobile home community is closed. resident jesse hague is worried about losing all the food in her fridge.

>> doing the best we can with what we've got. it's like you have to buy a generator, and i can't afford to buy a generator. i'm on a fixed income. >> reporter: last summer the county fire forced residents here to evacuate. but mike mccowen says his community shouldn't have to suffer again. >> we've now been through half a dozen fires up here. we've never had a problem with power lines arcing. >> reporter: pg&e is shutting down the power as a precaution. the equipment has been blamed for sparking wildfires including the camp fire in paradise which killed 85 people. the marina lst power, too, but an emergency generator is keeping the lights on and the refrigerators cold. >> we got an automated phone call yesterday. we were able to prepare by getting our generators ready. you know, i don't think you're ever as prepared as you want to be for a power outage. >> reporter: pg&e says restoring power to the north bay communities could take up to 24 hours. they say more power outages are possible this weekend.

in napa cornell barnard, abc7 ne news. during a red flag warning and any time, trust the abc7 news app to get you the latest information to keep you and your family safe. download it now and customize the forecast and alerts for the area where you live. developing news. teachers at the new haven unified school district are set to vote this afternoon on a tentative contract deal. the district says it includes a 1.5% salary increase and a 2.5% bonus in year. -- bonus this school year. next year teachers would get a 3% pay bump. they initially wanted 10% over two years. if teachers approve the contract, they could return to the classroom on monday. the strike began may 20th. >> investigators are trying to determine the cause of a car fire that interrupted dinnertime in san francisco's cow hollow neighborhood. flames engulfed a silver sedan parked on union street just after 6:30 last night. as you see on this video, the spectacle attracted quite a scene of onlookers.

many watched, some from the street, as a plume of smoke rose from the burning car. >> at first it was just the front of the car that was burning up. then it started exploding little by little as it was enveloping the whole car. >> firefighters put the fire out in a matter of minutes. in the east bay a mural honoring oscar grant was dedicated at the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station in oakland. family, friends, and community members gathered to remember the 22-year-old african-american man who was fatally shot by a b.a.r.t. police officer at the station new year's day, 2009. grant's mother fought to get the mural up. the b.a.r.t. board approved it unanimously in february. >> the hurt is still there. the pain is still there. but it lets me know that through oscar's death that his life will be remembered for years and years and years from now. >> along with the mural, a previously unnamed street was also named and dedicated in grant's honor.

6:07. the warriors are hosting another watch party. game five of the nba times is tomorrow night. cheer them on with fans at oracle arena to watch the team take on the raptors. doors open at 5:00. parking costs $20 and opens at 4:30. a portion of the proceeds benefit the oakland community foundation and the warriors community foundation. the raptors are giving mcdonald's a run for its money. restaurants in ontario, canada, agreed to give away orders of french fries whenever the raptors hit 12 or more three pointers in a game this season. the "financial post" said mcdonald's estimated 700,000 orders. so far, they've given away about two million orders at a cost of more than $4 million. abc7 is the only place to watch the warriors in the nba finals. game five is tomorrow in toronto. abc7's mindy bach and dion lim will report from scotiabank arena.

our coverage begins tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 followed by the dubs on 7 pregame show at 5:00, nba countdown at 5:30, then "after the game" with larry beale. happening today, thousands of athletes from around the world are in san francisco for the annual escape from alcatraz triathlon. it starts with a 1.5-mile swim, an 18-mile bike ride through the presidio, and eight-mile run through the golden gate area. the first swimmers hit the water at 7:30 this morning. the triathlon is considered one of the oldest and most difficult. thankfully they're getting an early start for the race. the heat will hit later this morning. >> definitely, mid morning probably. right now it's nice in most areas. the sun cinup, and 63 downtown. 59 across the bay. 61 in san jose. 70 in our east bay valleys. still some upper elevations

there is growing danger with the growing trend of travel. electric scooters speeding down roads and sidewalks have been the cause of at least 11 deaths since the beginning of last year. one mayor has had enough and is demanding to the scooters be banned. here's abc's marcy gonzalez with more. >> reporter: leaders in yet another american city threatening to ban electric scooters, concerned about the danger to riders and pet extraneous. >> they're -- pedestrian. >> they're everywhere. >> reporter: the mayor says there are more than 4,000 scooters in his city, saying he wants them off the streets if the seven scooter companies operating there don't address safety concerns. >> i'd love to see them fit in to nashville. the way it is operating in nashville right now, we have too much risk associated with it. >> reporter: there video shows the risks riders are taking. this man in nashville on a scooter with a child on his back. last month a 26-year-old man died there, hit by a vehicle

while riding a scooter. brady galke's family starting a petition to outlaw them so he is, quote, the last victim of what they call an epidemic. across the country the "associated press" reports there have been at least 11 electric scooter deaths since the beginning of last year. and "consumer reports" telling 1,500 scooter-related accidents from 47 cities since late 2017. more than a week ago this 18-year-old thrown from a scooter after hitting a pothole. she has a brain injury. several companies are updating the design to make them safer, and they encourage riders to wear helmets though the laws requiring them vary from city to city. marci gonzalez, abc, santa monica, california. first responders in san francisco are even more prepared after working on their skills and responding to active shooter situations. [ alarm ] yesterday's training was designed to simulate the chaos

that police officers and firefighters would face in a real mass shooting. first responders learned new tactics to help them respond to violence and fire inside a highrise. new technology being deployed during these incidents includes realtime access to floor plans. >> if there is a mass shooters, y -- -- if there is a mass shooter, you're able to track the shooter quickly, contain the entire event as quickly as possible, reducing the losses as much as you can. >> the fire department recently implemented an active shooter policy. 6:15. more than 2,000 cyclists finished their journey yesterday to raise money to fight aids and hiv. this year's aids life cycle ride included olympic medalist gus kenworth whoa traded in his skis for pedals. his team rode across the finish line in los angeles after a kenwthained what motivated him to ride. >> i feel like i've just been very, very blessed and

here's live doppler 7, you're noticing a few clouds. high clouds in walnut creek. beautiful view here. look at the light there on those clouds. just amazing. and we're looking at low 60s downtown now. 60 in oakland with 61 in san jose, mountainview, 62, half moon bay. upwelling going on from the ocean waters, that's bringing up the cooler numbers. strong winds over the waters yesterday. looking at mt. tam, more high clouds, 51 santa rosa. 53 napa, petaluma. 70s by the delta, 61 in concord, 57 in livermore. above 1,000 feet, gusty winds. look at miles per hour. good news is these winds will weaken as we go through the afternoon. but it's the strongest right now. and we'reatmosphere, bringing relative humidity. now at about 40% down to about and not a whole lot of recovery

cruz. we'll see 80s there. also 80s at our local bay area beaches. but the air quality certainly taking a hit today. it won't be great down in the south bay. be advised that with all the heat, it is certainly going to be tough out there. mid morning, we still have the red flag warning throughout the day today. upper elevations of the north bay and east bay, winds are gusting. a heat advisory has temperatures coming up at least seven to ten degrees from where we were yesterday. it was pretty nice yesterday. widespread 90s to near 100, close to 90 in san francisco right now. check out walnut creek, beautiful with the high clouds. and we're at 62 downtown mountainview. 48 in half moon view. from the exploratorium camera, looks good out there, doesn't it, with 72 in vacaville. 61 in concord. already pretty mild in parts of the bay. and with the high clouds, they're not going to help filter out the sun because the warmth is here. we're in the 90s throughout the afternoon around the bay. and to near 100 around

livermore. even more heat arriving for your monday. chris? >> thank you. republicans and democrats have very different responses to the deal reached between the u.s. and mexico to avoid president trump's tariff on mexican goods. republicansclated the president yesterday -- republicans congratulated the president yesterday calling it great news for the economy and border security. democrats said the administration is missing the point with the deal, saying it does nothing to deal with the humanitarian crisis. mexico will send 6,000 troops to its southern border and crack down on human trafficking from central america. >> i think it's a -- they have more drastic measures and proposals at the start. and we reached some middle point. >> speaking at a tijuana rally yesterday, mexicosint re-emphasized his desire for dialogue and cooperation with the u.s. coming up on "this week," mexico's foreign minister and

2020 democratic candidate beto oh rourke will appear. you can watch the full interviews on "this week" at 8:00 here on abc7. gunshots bei fired triggchicag triggered a g. many ran for cover after hearing what they thought were gunshots over others saying gunfire had broken out. a man described what he saw and heard. >> when we heard somebody say that somebody had a gun, one of the cops went into the radio to say there was an active shooter. and like a couple of seconds later is thwhen we heard the lo bang which everybody thought was the gunshots. from what i understand now, they were just the gates falling over. [ siren ] >> police verified that no shots were fired. washington, d.c.'s, fire department did not say how many eededal treatment. one of the biggest pride celebrations on the west coast is now in full swing.

>> welcome to pride, 2019! >> tens of thousands from around the world are in west hollywood for d's pcebratioere. this year's event is taking a serious tone. organizers want to promote a safe zone that promotes tolerance and inclusion. the festival caps off with today's pride parade through the streets of west hollywood. police in santa ana have arrested a 38-year-old woman on attempted kidnapping charges after she's accused of posing as a social worker and trying to take a baby. the suspect told the infant's mother she was there to take the one-week-old child into protective custody. the mother refused to comply. that's when the suspect said she'd call the sheriff, and the mother responded "go ahead." >> i had to take your newborn -- i say, no, you don't want to take my baby. i say, okay, if the sheriff have to come, that's fine. i don't want to give my kid. >> it mother did not want to give her name. police say the suspect turned

herself in friday evening. in a twist, santa ana police now say the woman is being investigated by homicide detectives. time is 6:34. if you're a fan of summer berries, listen up -- some frozen berry packages are being recalled due to possible hepatitis a contamination. the berries are sold under kroger's private selection brand. the frozen triple berry medley and frozen blackberries are potentially contaminated. foodsco and foods for less supermarkets stock the products. kroger says you can bring the products back for a full refund. for millions of americans, a pet is a part of the family. today we're spending more than ever on our animals. in fact, americans spent $72 billion on pets last year alone. however, many owners don't realize there are absolutely no safety standards for thousands of products like pet toys, seat belts, and clothing.

that came as a huge shock to a north bay woman who feared for the life of her dog. 7 onter: gina's dog beis a lot bigger than gina. >> 170 pounds. doesn't get much bigger than that. >> reporter: like a lot of dogs, bella loves to chew. really chew. gina keeps a stash of toys made for big dogs. >> and this one said that it was 100% safe nylon. so i'll try it. >> reporter: gina opened this mint-flavored nylon bone one day -- >> she's chewing on it for maybe 20, 30 minutes. >> reporter: suddenly she realized bella had broken off a chunk. >> i'm trying to get the broken piece out of her mouth, and she doesn't want me to do that. it's too late. she swallowed it. >> reporter: it was a piece less than two inches around, so gina wasn't too worried. >> she's a big dog. i thought for sure she would just pass it. >> reporter: everything seemed okay until two weeks later -- >> she began getting really, really sick.

diarrhea, vomiting -- >> reporter: the plastic piece was still in her belly. >> the vet had said if she doesn't pass it, it could cause a blockage. >> reporter: she says bella would need emergency surgery. gina stayed with bella around the clock hoping the piece would come back out. >> i reached out to the company -- >> reporter: the toy bella chewed off is a flavorit bone made by pet quirks. she asked the company to reimburse her $71 vet bill and pay for the time off work. the company apologized and offered to pay the $71 but said it was not at fault. >> they don't guarantee that these won't break. they said that they didn't find any fault in the manufacturing of the toy. >> reporter: a company spokesperson, jeff fowler, by phone said photos of the used toys show bella had chewed off the end piece. and gina should have removed the toy before that could have happened. he said the package has this clear warning -- always supervise pet while chewing and remove if damaged. gina said it happened in a split

second. she pointed to the company website saying the toys are made of indestructible nylon and are 100% safe. fowler said the term "100% safe" only means the nylon is nontoxic it doesn't mean the toys are unbreakable. however, pet quirks removed the word "instructible" after we pointed it out. what surprised gina most, pet companies are not held to any rules for marketing these products. unlike children's toys which are heavily regulated, there are no federal standards for pet toys. they are not considered consumer products. they can only be recalled if they can harm a human being. >> that's unfortunate because i don't have children. she's like my baby. >> pet owners should be screaming about this. >> reporter: lindsay walco, co-founder of the center for pet safety, says owners assume if it's on a store shelf it passed a test. >> they see it looks like a baby toy, it's cute and cuddly. it's a sad moment when they
