rds, can't bring me down♪ good morning. i'm janai norman. >> i'm kenneth moton. here's some of the top headlines we're following this morning on "world news now." breaking overnight, the man known as big papi the victim what was police say was an ambush. the former major league slugger, david ortiz, shot in the back at a club in the dominican republic. a suspect is under arrest. smoke and ash from a brush fire chased hundreds from one of the country's largest amusement parks. kids and the parents, some wearing bathing suits, were forced to evacuate six flags magic mountain outside los angeles. also in california, two more horses have died at santa anita park. that brings the total number of deaths this season to 29 since december. animal rights activists have been calling for an end to racing at that park.

>> reporter: also agreeing to expand what they call migration protection protocols, requiring asylum seekers to remain in mexico while their claims are processed in the u.s. that policy first announced by former homeland security secretary kirstjen nielsen in december. >> individuals arriving in or entering the united states from mexico illegally or without proper documentation may be returned to mexico. >> reporter: acting secretary of homeland security, kevin mcaleenan, says this plan is different. >> people can disagree with the tactics. mexico came to the table with real proposals. >> reporter: critics sounding off. >> he's becoming the threatener in chief. >> you can't use to it threaten. you can't have a trade policy based on tweets. >> reporter: the president hinting what would happen if there isn't sufficient cooperation from mexico to stop illegal border crossings, tweeting, quote, we can always go back to our previous, very profitable position of tariffs. at the same time president trump

is still engaged in a trade dispute with china and secretary of treasury steven mnuchin says he's considering slapping more tariffs on chinese goods. president trump will make that decision after he sits down with the prime minister later this month. tara pal 3450er palmieri, abc news 37 >> former baseball star david he breaking overnight one of the big names in the red sox nation the victim of what's being called an ambush in his native dominican republic. >> former baseball star david ortiz is recovering after being shot in the back in a club in santa domingo. people scrambled for safety. ortiz is expected to recover. police do not have a motive. a crowd captured the suspect, then beat him and held him until police arrived. ortiz helped boston win three world series titles before retiring in 2016. the eastern half of the country is bracing for a wet and possibly dangerous start to the week. >> a severe system already took its toll in dallas. a crane you see off in the distance in that video fell, leaving a woman dead.

it's being blamed on winds as high as 70 miles per hour that pushed the crane onto an apartment building. >> that same system sent debris flying through the streets north of dallas as the city dealt with a severe storm warning. >> the storm brought down trees and large branches, including this one that fell on a car. accuweather's paul williams has more. >> good morning janai, kenneth. well, a chance to recover with a high pressure system covering dallas. for the rest of texas, south and then to the west, more showers and thunderstorms. in fact, we're bracing for more bad weather along the entire east coast with heaviest downpours that's going to cover pittsburgh, detroit, roanoke, down towards atlanta. looking out for possibly 15 inches of rain in some areas. and this is going to continue tuesday going into wednesday along the east coast. for the west coast, it's about the triple-digit heat and the dry, parched conditions. in fact, so dry for the northwest corner of the country, looking for record-challenging highs with low humidity, increased fire damage.

>> our thanks to paul. a day of pride celebrations turned into chaos in the nation's capital over false reports of gunshots. >> several people were injured as people in the crowd ran away as you see there. police say no shots were fired. attacks, some deadly, against the lgbtq community, have dominated the news in recent weeks. and as lana zak reports, that has people on edge. >> reporter: sunday's pride parade in west hollywood drawing huge crowds. but as pride month celebrations continue across the country and around the world, the fbi reports that attacks against members of the lgbtq community are on the rise. saturday's capital pride parade in washington, d.c. turned to chaos when people panicked after hearing a series of loud pops and rumors of an active shooter. >> what did you hear? >> we don't know! >> reporter: crowds scrambled to find cover, several people injured. >> we have a lot of people, you hear a loud bang, you're just trying to, you know, get from

the area. >> reporter: many in the crowd telling me just before the incident that they were on edge in part because of recent fatal attacks on members of the lgbtq community. authorities in detroit recently charging this man, devone robinson, with the murder of three people, paris cameron, timothy blancher, alante davis. >> we just want justice. justice. yeah, just justice. >> reporter: officials saying the victims were targeted because they were gay or transgender. robinson has pled not guilty. and in georgia, police are searching for a gunman who killed ronald trey peters. witnesses saying that the attacker used an anti-gay slur before shooting peters several times. >> i feel like lately we've been moving a little bit backwards. i think it's important to stand up for what matters. >> reporter: some lawmakers say it is time to stand up. wisconsin's democratic governor ordering the rainbow flag flown over the state's capitol to recognize pride month. the move drawing criticism from

some of his fellow conservative republican lawmakers, one tweeting, is this any more appropriate than erecting the christian flag over the capitol? but others hailing it as a show of inclusivity. lana zak, abc news, washington. >> our thanks to lana. hong kong's leader seems to be brushing aside a massive protest that drew hundreds of thousands of people. >> they were demonstrating against a measure that would allow hong kong to extradite people to mainland china to face charges. but this morning hong kong chief executive carrie lam said the legislation would move forward and safeguards would be added to make sure human rights are protected. abc's julia macfarlane reports. >> reporter: tense moments on the streets of hong kong. protesters tried to break into a legislative complex, clashing with police. this after 1 million people came out in force, according to activists, to tell china to stay out of hong kong. they were out to demonstrate against a controversial new bill being pushed through parliament that would allow extradition to china.

viral video of an elevator rescue has some salt lake city police officers looking for revenge. >> this shows nine of the city's finest having to be saved by firefighters who work in the same building. the public safety building elevator got stuck last week. firefighters knew members of the police force were inside, so they made sure to record the rescue and post it online. and i guess have a few laughs. >> i thought it was pretty unfortunate for the police officers. but pretty funny for us. >> i would like to say that it was like any other call. but we particularly enjoyed bringing those police officers out. the looks on their face, knowing that they were going to hear about it for a long time. >> that post picked up more than 500,000 views in 24 hours. the police chief did offer doughnuts to the fire department to say thank you. >> and one firefighter said "it's like teasing your little brother." you love them to death and you'd do anything for them but you're going to tease them. >> that video will live forever. coming up, the search for an

a wildfire burning about 85 a wildfire burning about 85 miles northeast of san francisco has scorched more than three square miles. the flames were pushed by strong winds over the weekend. they burned at least seven buildings which were not homes and forced more than 100 people to evacuate. temperatures in the area have been in the mid-90s and crews dropped fire retardant from planes that cut off a fire that burned across more than 11 square miles northeast of phoenix. officials say the fire is more than half contained. >> a tough battle there for those firefighters. and the search operation for a cruise ship passenger who fell overboard in the mediterranean sea has ended. the 63-year-old korean woman disappeared as the norwegian "epic" cruise ship was heading from the south of france to spain. >> she left her cabin early saturday morning to get some fresh air but never returned. a cold case disappearance of an american woman in australia has reportedly shifted into a homicide investigation.

>> it comes as police conduct an excavation of the woman's property. here's our friend diane macedo. >> reporter: police in australia searching for a missing american woman are digging up her front yard, led there by cadaver dogs. >> i'm kind of really worried that they do find something. at least -- i just kind of like want some answers. >> reporter: priscilla brooten was last heard from in july 2018 but police say the 46-year-old mother wasn't reported missing until december. her daughter, who lives in california, said the family never suspected anything was wrong. >> we thought she was mad at us, so we didn't think -- well, she's mad, she's not going to talk to us. >> reporter: friends in australia grew concerned after her car was found abandoned. investigators even took her ex-girlfriend into custody for questioning but released him saying he is not a suspect. authorities are pushing for new leads. >> she was an online gamer.

or octinoxate. filtering them. but the fda recently conducted a pilot study of chemical sunscreens and determined that without further testing, fda does not know what levels of absorption can be considered safe. >> we don't know how they affect our health. those studies haven't been done yet. >> reporter: the consumer health care products association, a sunscreen manufacturers trade group, releasing a statement saying, sunscreen manufacturers, fda, and dermatologists are aligned on the goal of protecting the public from the harmful effects of the sun, pointing out that the authors of the fda study say these results do not indicate that individuals should refrain from the use of sunscreen. >> choose whatever sunscreen you feel like you'll lose, but don't apply it head to toe. we know dose is an issue potentially with these chemical sunscreens. >> reporter: for people who want to continue using a chemical sunscreen, use sun-protective clothing and only applies to areas exposed to the sun.

so much. >> she check those text messages? i did, i did. >> so good to be back together, you guys. we will get to a lot of fun today. but we do start on a low note this morning, beginning with that deadly crane collapse in dallas. >> horrified witnesses watched as this crane came down onto an apartment building. the impact left one woman dead and at least five other people hurt, two critically. the crane left a massive hole in the building and ripped through a parking garage. abc's erielle reshef reports the blame for the chaotic scene, the weather. >> reporter: the terrifying moments after damaging winds in dallas knocked this crane into an apartment building, killing at least one person. in this alarming video you can see a witness watching in horror as the crane falls. >> oh my god, the crane is falling over, oh my god! >> reporter: a hole punched through the roof. parts of the structure shredded. and that crane on its side. >> we have two people who are listed as critical, three who

suffered serious injuries but were not critical. one person who has in fact been discharged from the hospital already, and one person who's been confirmed deceased. >> reporter: inside the building, cars could be seen teetering on the edge. urban search and rescue rushing to the scene. >> the building itself has suffered multiple collapses in different areas. >> reporter: all this caused by a ferocious severe storm that whipped up near hurricane-strength wind gusts at dallas love field airport, at one point knocking out power to that major transportation hub. an overhead sign crashing down outside a nearby restaurant. those intense wind gusts reaching up to 71 miles per hour, knocking out power to at least 250,000 people in the dallas county area alone. and we know that first responders are still on the scene at that deadly crane collapse combing through rubble, looking for any other potential victims. erielle reshef, abc news, new york. >> our thanks to erielle. heavy rains are causing problems across much of the

eastern half of the country. >> flooding wiped out a bridge in northwest north carolina. the rising water left dozens of residents trapped in the town of spruce pines. paul williams has more. >> good morning kenneth, janai. heavy downpours covering the ohio valley region and the northeast. humid air is going to feed into these downpours and keep them very robust throughout the day, all the way down throughout the carolinas with heavy storms into atlanta and showers mixed in with thunderstorms, reaching as far south as miami. along the east coast, we're talking about travel disruptions, flooding, and the possibility of 15 inches of rain in some areas. look for more rain in southern portions of texas over towards el paso, carving a good chunk of new mexico. then to the west it's about the dry heat possibly causing more problems with fires. triple-digit heat for the southwest corner of the country. back to you, janai, kenneth. >> thank you, paul. let's get to some breaking news out of the dominican republic. former boston red sox star david ortiz has been shot. >> surveillance video appears to

show a man ambushing ortiz inside a club in santa domingo. images show what looks like the man walking up behind the player known as big papi and shooting him in the back. his condition is described as stable after emergency surgery and he is expected to be okay. a crowd caught the suspect and beat him until police arrived. he's now in custody as police work to learn a motive. ortiz played 20 major league seasons, 14 of those in boston. and he helped the red sox win three world series before retiring in 2016. >> we will continue to monitor that breaking news that came in overnight. some conflicting reports at first, but those are the latest details that we have, that he was shot in the back there. in fact, there's surveillance video. >> absolutely. that will help that case. we do know that his dad spoke to reporters down in the dominican republic overnight and said that he's out of surgery. >> so again, we'll keep watch on that and we're praying for his quick recovery there. moving on to a brush fire caused panic at one of the nation's largest amusement parks.

>> flames sent thick smoke into the skies near six flags magic mountain in southern california. that sent hundreds of children and their parents racing to try to get out of the 260-acre park on a day temperatures hovered near 100 degrees. abc's marci gonzalez was there. >> reporter: a scary scene near one of america's biggest amusement parks. a fast-moving brush fire breaking out near six flags magic mountain outside of los angeles. thick smoke billowing just behind some of the park's popular water slides, creating a haze throughout it. guests initially told by the park to evacuate. panicked parents and children racing to the exits. you could see the blaze burning with fire crews near. but l.a. county fire asking those guests to stay put while 100 county firefighters battled the flames. but guests were all eventually allowed to leave.

the flames are now out. the smoke is clearing. and we've learned this amusement park will remain closed until monday morning. marci gonzalez, abc news, santa clarita, california. president trump is declaring victory and defending his deal with mexico after abandoning his tariff threat. >> the president says mexico has agreed to quote strong measures to stem the flow of central american migrants to the u.s., including the deployment of thousands of troops to his border with guatemala. but many democrats say some of those changes are not new, such as the expansion of a policy requiring asylum seekers to remain in mexico while their claims are processed. critics question if the deal will have an impact on the situation at the border. house democrats are set to open a series of hearings this week looking to keep the spotlight on the russia investigation. nixon white house counsel john dean is scheduled to testify today, offering his expertise on obstruction of justice. the president lashed out in a tweet last night. also on the agenda, a vote tomorrow on whether to hold attorney general william barr and former white house counsel don mcgahn in contempt for defying subpoenas related to the

mueller report. protest organizers in hong kong said about 1 million people came out to oppose what they say is china's growing influence. the demonstration was meant to oppose a controversial new bill that would allow people to be extradited to china. hong kong is a chinese territory but has its own legal system. more protests are expected this week as lawmakers consider that bill. a man with a bb gun created panic and chaos at the pride parade in the nation's capital. several people were injured, including one child, as hundreds ran from the scene, fearing an active shooter. at least seven people were taken to the hospital. none of the injuries are considered life threatening. police say no shots were fired by the weapon found, but several people reported hearing gunfire. >> a half a second later is when that loud boom happened. that's when everybody -- wn you guys were running up, that's when everybody just took off like crazy. >> it's unclear if the sounds from falling metal barriers were mistaken for gunshots. one man was arrested on weapons

the pilot and a passenger of that small plane suffered minor injuries when the plane crashed in the city of medford, oregon. no one on the ground was hurt. the crash was blamed on the plane's mechanical problems. it happened just moments after the plane took off from a nearby airport. so as the weather is getting nice, the sun is out, officials are warning deck owners to be sure that structure is safe before hosting large outdoor gatherings. a deck in germantown, maryland collapsed saturday night. >> dozens suffered only minor injuries. just one person was taken to the hospital for treatment. a first responder says the deck's wood appears to have suffered some water damage. the body of a man who's been missing for two weeks near mt. rainier in washington state has been found. 72-year-old chang su kim got separated from his family while picking ferns in a dense forest over memorial day weekend. a search party located his remains in deep mud saturday.

we're getting our first look at mother nature giving two arizona boys a wild ride on a trampoline. watch here as a big gust of wind lifted it off the ground on memorial day in tempe. the 11-year-olds who were playing on it were sent flying and fell into a neighboring street. one boy suffered a broken elbow and injuries to his pelvis. now to the sad ending in the search for a texas police chief who disappeared after he fell off a fishing boat. chris reid's body was recovered early sunday morning in the same area where he went overboard in galveston bay. >> reid lost his balance after a wake from a passing vessel hit his boat on friday. he wasn't wearing a life jacket. dozens of agencies spent most of the weekend searching for the former army paratrooper. a sheriff's deputy in florida is recovering from what could have been a fatal gunshot wound to the leg during a

standoff with a suspect barricaded inside a home. >> the incident unfolded in newport ritchie, florida and was triggered reportedly after a suspect shot at an echo smart speaker. here's abc's diane macedo. >> reporter: two officers are injured, a suspect is facing multiple charges, and a florida neighborhood is riddled with bullets after a bizarre standoff that started with an argument over an amazon echo. >> i've been living here since 2002 and haven't seen anything like this go on. >> reporter: the pascoe county sheriff's office says the first call came in at 12:30 in the morning when a woman reported her parents were in a physical fight after her father shot at the amazon alexa. >> as our deputies arrived on scene, they saw that the wife was battered. the mother was really upset because the husband had shot at her alexa. >> reporter: with his wife out of the house, police say they they spent an hour trying to convince the suspect, terrence peters, to come out as well. when they didn't respond, they went in. >> as they were going toward the door, the bedroom door, the suspect started shooting.
