crashing down, turning a sunday afternoon into armageddon. >> absolute chaos. i can't believe what [ bleep ] i'm seeing right now. >> reporter: dallas firefighters rushed victims to safety. the crane slicing through multiple floors of apartments and a parking garage, toppled in a storm packing winds of 71 miles per hour. >> oh my god, the crane is falling over, oh my god! >> reporter: the impact killing 29-year-old kirsten smith. five others were injured. >> sounded like just the gnarliest crack of thunder you've ever heard. >> reporter: the storms also bringing tornado damage in texas and flooding in north carolina and tennessee where a 2-year-old boy was swept away and killed. in dallas, displaced apartment residents were allowed in to grab a few essentials. ysinia wrote her husband jay was home asleep when the crane destroyed their apartment. rescuers found him injured but still holding their dog, joey. we did some checking and this

crane company has actually had 17 federal safety violations since 2013, some of them quite serious. the company did not respond to us, but has said they are cooperating with the investigation. and while officials say that weather was certainly one factor in what happened here behind me, determining the exact cause could take up to six months. clayton sandell, abc news, dallas. canada is taking steps on two environmental issues. >> it will ban single-use plastic items as soon as 2021 to counter pollution and waste. an exact list has not yet been released but the ban is likely to include bags, straws, and fast food containers. >> canada will also ban facilities from keeping whales, dolphins, or porpoises in captivity. marineland in niagara falls will be the zoo that is most affected. it has dozens of whales and dolphins. parks that presently have the sea creatures can keep them but the new law also bans making them perform.

we know the golden state warriors are keeping hope alive, taking the battle for the nba championship back to oakland. >> but against a backdrop of this nail biter of an nba finals, we're hearing about a special program right here in new york that's pumping out future nba stars. here's abc's byron pitts. >> thompson. one fake, one dribble, one shot, got it! >> reporter: game five. the golden state warriors can cling to the dream of a dynasty at least one more game. regardless of who wins, these professionals are already living the dream of every kid who's ever picked up a basketball. and basketball is also a gateway to dreams for these young men in new york city. hopefuls like cole anthony. one of the country's top high school prospects. and members of the elite pro scholar athlete program known as psa. >> i will be part of the psa program for the rest of my life.

>> reporter: a youth basketball program geared towards coaching the next generation of nba stars and their roster proves it. since the program was founded in 2009, seven graduates are currently playing, including the orlando magic's mo bama. the program's a passion project for four old college friends. terrence williams, jason ford, justin weir, ray charles. >> basketball's always been something we all loved. obviously community, giving back to kids. if you go down the line, each one of us had a mentor that just wanted to make sure that we were doing something that was going to affect the world in a positive manner. >> reporter: the program is not just about success on the court, it's about success in life, starting with a college education. what is pro scholar athletes? >> what we do is try and identify young men and expose them to greater academic and social opportunities through the sport. the impetus of our program is to

really position as many black and brown boys to get a free college education. >> reporter: but their goal, they say, is not just to motivate students to be good basketball players. but more importantly, good citizens. >> if you see different programs, they say, listen, if you have 90 students, we'll help you. if you're potentially five-star talent basketball guys, we'll deal with you. but our guys are different. we take you in -- >> show up at the door, we got you? >> but the requirements are going to be there, right? you can't be failing classes and playing. >> reporter: psa has sent 62 student athletes to college since 2009. awarding over $13 million in scholarships every year. >> now we've probably had, what, 20 guys graduate college either a bachelor's degree or master's degree in the last two years. >> our numbers are a little bit fudged because the guys that don't graduate are going into the nba. >> reporter: as a new generation takes to court for practice, their talent and aspiration reminder of a legacy fulfilled.

i would imagine anyone who picked up a basketball, the dream is to one day be the mvp of the nba finals. is that the dream for these boys? >> i would say basketball-wise it's the dream for each one of them. but as they go through the program, as they get older, they start to realize, as i'm chasing this dream there's a lot of other smaller goals i can capture that's going to prepare me for manhood in the future when basketball is over. >> reporter: basketball has been called a beautiful game and it is. the goal of psa is bigger than ball, it's living a beautiful life. at the end of the day the goal isn't to create great basketball players, that's fine, but to create great grown-assed men? >> yes, that's it. >> there you go. >> that's it, that's it, who's going to affect the world in a positive manner. >> at the end of the day, we won. >> reporter: i'm byron pitts in the bronx. >> so, you know, our friend byron pitts always has a way to put it in a simple way for you to understand it. >> and he did exactly that. should we have bleeped it? >> i will say it's a very responsible program. >> absolutely is.

this morning on "world news now," new details in that deadly skyscraper crash. >> a pilot was killed when his helicopter crashed into a manhattan rooftop right near times square. that building evacuated. we have new information on that pilot and his level of experience. back in boston, beloved slugger david "big papi" ortiz is now under american medical care, rushed to the u.s. after being shot in the dominican republic. those injuries are more serious than first reported. insomniac alert, new research says sleeping with your tv on can affect your waistline. we have the simple tweak to improve your well-being while watching us. nba finals fever is back to golden state for game six of the nba finals.

so why was w-nation's gm crying? we'll explain on this tuesday, june 11th. good morning, everyone. great to have you with us. what a game five. >> oh, yeah. did you stay up late to watch that? >> one point, kevin durant made a surprise return but he was hurt. >> hurt again. >> it was back and forth, especially in that last quarter there. >> golden state, they're excited but dealing with some heartache too with k.d. out. >> we will talk a lot about that this morning. but we do begin with the aftermath of that frightening helicopter crash right here in new york city. the investigation into what went wrong just getting under way. >> one key question centers on this video, a helicopter seen flying erratically over the east river just moments before the chopper crash landed on the roof of a skyscraper. officials are trying to confirm if this was the same helicopter that crashed. >> this was all that was left of

the helicopter after it crashed and burned. the experienced pilot lost his life, but there were no other injuries. abc's gio benitez picks up the story. >> reporter: panic in new york city. police and firefighters mobilizing on the ground and circling the 54-story skyscraper. >> 787, seventh avenue, reports of crash onto the roof with fire on the roof. >> reporter: while in a building nearby a man trains his camera on the plume of smoke billowing off the roof. >> it was a significant flame coming off the top of the building. right before that i had heard what sounded like a helicopter. >> reporter: workers inside the tower describing the moment of impact. shauna pharell was on the 36th floor in the middle of a meeting. >> we heard a loud whizzing sound of a motor, then we heard a crash and felt the crash as well. looked out the window, we saw a bunch of smoke and debris and we just all ran. we ran down 36 flights as soon as we could. >> nathan hutton was on the 29th floor. >> only way i can describe it like someone standing next to

you and they give you a hard shove. you kind of, whoa, what's that? then one, two, three seconds afterwards, like, you hear a sound, it sounds like fireworks going off from a distance. >> reporter: he describes a harrowing evacuation. >> you have 30 or 40 floors of people that are all getting out at the same time. as soon as we got in the lobby, there are police and firefighters there. everybody out out out out! now it's time to run. >> reporter: these images show the wreckage on the rooftop. firefighters shot water 700 feet to extinguish the blaze. the chopper completely obliterated. >> we had a very strained, very troubling incident this afternoon here in manhattan. helicopter crashed into a building here. >> reporter: the pilot identified as tim mccormack killed. he was the only one aboard the aircraft. authorities say no signs point to terrorism, but many questions

remain. the chopper was bound for new jersey and took off at 1:32 p.m. from the 34th street heliport on the east river, flying over manhattan. it was in the air for 11 minutes before crashing onto the building. about half a mile from trump tower. >> other than weather are there other reasons why they should close the area close to trump tower? >> temporary flight restriction, we're checking into that too. >> and to be clear, just to finish this, to go into that area, a helicopter would need the approval of laguardia tower. and we need to find out if that happened here or not. we do know know at this point. >> reporter: this video shows a helicopter flying erratically over the east river. authorities were unable to confirm definitively that it was the doomed flight. and they couldn't explain why a chopper was flying at all on this rainy day with so much dense fog. >> why was that helicopter in the air in weather like this? >> not sure, that's part of the investigation. >> reporter: there was no helipad on the roof of this building.

they were banned in manhattan after a chopper crashed onto the pan am building in 1977. authorities at the time hoping to avoid disasters which could have been worse. >> there are no other injuries we know of at this point in time to anyone in the building or on the ground. i want to say, thank god for that. this could have been a much worse incident. >> reporter: and we're told that pilot was well regarded, very experienced, that something must have gone horribly wrong either mechanically or with the weather. you can just see all of this fog behind me. it's been like that all day long. gio benitez, abc news, new york. >> our thanks to gio. absolutely was dense fog yesterday. such a scary situation, especially, especially right here in manhattan. governor andrew cuomo saying yesterday for a lot of new yorkers, this kind of brings back ptsd. people thinking immediately about 9/11. >> and as we see that pilot who lost his life there, again, he had quite a few years of experience. but so many questions about exactly why was he flying in

this really bad weather? was he trying to make a landing on that building for a certain reason? why was he in that restricted air space? so as the investigation goes on, we will report what we find out. moving on to former boston red sox star david ortiz. he's now in the u.s. after being shot while in his native dominican republic. the red sox flew him to boston where he landed just hours ago. doctors removed ortiz's gallbladder and part of his intestines. he also suffered liver damage. police say a suspect has confessed to his role in the shooting. he's still in the hospital after being attacked by witnesses. they're not sure if he was the shooter or accomplice. photos of americans entering and leaving the u.s. may have been leaked. the customs and border protection agency says it suffered a quote malicious cyber attack. tens of thousands of pictures of license plates and travelers at airports were taken from the site of a subcontractor.

the government says none of the photos are online yet. it raises new questions about how the government protects the personal data it collects. turning now to the race for 2020, president trump and former vice president joe biden will both be in iowa today. the president will attend two events, including a private republican fund-raiser. biden will make stops in four iowa towns during a two-day swing. his first trip to the state since april. sunday biden skipped an event in iowa attended by 19 other democratic candidates to go to his granddaughter's graduation. and a symbol of the tenacity of the friendship between the u.s. and france is dead. >> yep. that's how french president emmanuel macron described the friendship tree he and president trump planted at the white house last year. remember these images. macron says the sapling oak represented the ties that bind the two nations. french media says it met its demise as leaders met during last week's d-day ceremonies,

happen at home. well, that didn't quite work out. because kevin durant, would you believe, has been fighting to come back after a month. he had that calf injury a month ago. has not played at all. hasn't even practiced. he only went through his first full practice yesterday, a day ago, a day before this game. came out and started. and he started on fire. went 3 for 3 on his first three-pointers, had 11 points in that first quarter. second quarter starts and sure enough, he takes a bad step, just a step, he plants and that leg gives out on him and that calf, you can see he reinjured it. so he's out of the game. everything's set up now for the raptors to go ahead and end this. the crowd was into it. the warriors were actually up for most of this game, but in the closing minutes the raptors and kawhi leonard took over, go up in the closing minutes, and i tell you guys, i was getting prepared with my producer in our press seats to go down -- she was asking me, hey, who do we want to interview from the

raptors to the championship ceremony after? we were planning to finish this thing up and sure enough, the warriors say, hold on, t.j., everybody, we have the heart of a champion. dropped a couple of threes in the closing minutes and ended up winning this thing by a point. yes, oracle arena out in oakland is still home for these warriors for at least one more game. what a night for the warriors showing they do have the heart of a champion going back to oakland. they've got at least one more game in them, guys. >> the warriors still alive, t.j. still on the road. game six thursday night. >> in oakland. and as t.j. was talking about, of course that kevin durant injury, that is one of the big highlights from the game. >> yep. >> at the time a lot of people thought that he'd reinjured his calf, but this is actually a new injury to his achilles. the team's gm, bob meyers, said that he will have an mri later

that's an earthquake hitting the cleveland area. the magnitude was at least 4.0 with a series of aftershocks. some resident said it felt as if

their car -- a car had hit their homes. some books fell off shelves but little damage is recorded. it's the most severe quake in the area of the six so far this year. wow. >> very scary there. dare i say it? cleveland really was rocking. a man and his dog were attacked by a bear while out for a walk in southern california. >> it happened in sierra madre about 15 miles northeast of los angeles. police say the dog saw a bear cub, then the mother bear went after the dog. the dog owner kicked the bear to protect his dog and was bitten and scratched. >> he and his dog are all right. mama bear was tranquilized, but last report is the cub is up a tree. there's another suspected shark attack off north carolina. >> it comes just one week after a 17-year-old girl lost her leg in a shark attack. >> here's abe's erielle reshef. >> reporter: a teenage surfer rushed to the hospital after a possible shark attack off the coast of north carolina. >> report of a possible shark bite.

19-year-old male conscious and breathing at the time. >> reporter: the 19-year-old austin reed reportedly emerging from the water near ocean isle beach bleeding from his foot. >> he said, y'all, i just got bit by a shark. austin is one to goof around a lot so i thought he was just kidding. i looked at his foot and realized he wasn't. >> reporter: the harrowing incident coming just a week after 17-year-old page winter lost her leg in a shark attack three hours up the north carolina coast. >> is she awake and breathing? >> if she is she's barely, she's in bad shape, i mean, her leg is almost gone. >> reporter: page's father managing to punch the shark on the head five times, saving his daughter's life. while fatalities are rare, officials say shark sightings are up. that 19-year-old surfer is expected to be okay. but scientists warn warmer water and more fish to feed on can lead to an increase in the shark population just offshore. erielle reshef, abc news, new york.

a startling study showing sources of light can mix up metabolism, leading to weight gain and even obesity. researchers analyzing data from 44,000 u.s. women for over five years. those who slept in a tv with a light left or more likely to gain 11 pounds compared to those who kept the room totally dark. they were also 30% more likely to become obese. scientists believe the artificial light disrupts biological processes like circadian rhythm and can alter hormones leading to weight gain. they also say that although the specific research focused on women, they'd expect the same results in men. >> will, will, wake up! >> oh, oh, sorry, oh, yeah. the study, it's preliminary. but hey, it's enough to make me want to turn out the lights. i'll stay up to watch "world news now" but that's it. tomorrow, tomorrow i'll watch "big little lies." >> reese witherspoon is really great in that. i was watching that last night.
