honestly. it is so hot out here. mike, nikko. >> two records, not like yesterday. >> that's a relief. sky is out, thigh's out. good morning, america. what a game last night. the golden state warriors win a stunner but lose one of their biggest stars. the warriors with a stunning come-from-behind victory, staying alive to fight for the title but losing comeback superstar kevin durant to a devastating achilles injury. and outrage as raptors fans cheer in the stands while he lies on the court. also this morning, the deadly chopper crash in the heart of new york city. the new video showing a chopper flying erratically moments before a helicopter crash lands on the roof of a 54-story building, forcing workers to evacuate. the mangled mess. and questions now growing.

just minutes away only on "gma." you have to imagine the warriors have a lot of mixed emotions, excited of course, keeping the series alive and kevin durant going down. >> yeah, a great game. a devastating injury for kevin durant. it was his first game back and he gets injured again. even warriors superfan drake, he was upset. he put the rivalry to the side and he comforted durant as he left the court. >> that was good to see. the warriors, my warriors, living to see another game. this is the scene outside oracle arena when they won. the series now heds -- heads back to oakland, the final game that will ever be played there. >> your warriors. i love that. >> yeah. >> it was a dramatic game. lots of drama coming down to the final shot. t.j. holmes is there for it all and is up early there in toronto. good morning, t.j. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. this was a thrilling, gutsy win for these golden state warriors. you hear me? they won, but after the game,

members of the warriors organization were literally in tears of sadness because kevin durant, who had fought his way back from injury and was making a comeback to try to help save his warriors' championship hopes, he goes down with what may be a worse injury than what was his original injury, and this left the entire arena stunned many was heartbreaking to see. it was a gut-wrenching sight that stunned players and fans alike. kevin durant, who hadn't played in a month because of a leg injury, went down again early in game five of the nba finals, grabbing the same injured leg. >> there's the play. right away, he knew it. >> reporter: coming into the game, intrigue and hope surrounded the warriors. just hours before the game, word came that durant would make a return and try to dig the warriors out of a 3-1 series deficit. he came out true to form, making his first three three-pointers,

was active on defense and jawed with raptors guard fred vanvleet. but on a move to the basket, it appeared he reinjured his leg. many in the crowd immediately cheered his injury. several raptors players offered their support, and gestured to the crowd to cut it out. the crowd eventually chanted k.d. as he was helped off the floor. warrior players were shaken seeing durant go down again. steph curry followed durant to the tunnel to give support. >> we know how hard it is to come back and we gave ourself a chance. game six is going to be fun. >> reporter: the warriors president of basketball operations was emotional addressing the k.d. injury. >> kevin had -- it's an achilles injury. i don't know the extent of it. he'll have an mri tomorrow. >> reporter: after durant went down, the warriors regrouped. in a drama-filled night in toronto, they fought like

champions. they were ahead by 14 at one point, and found themselves down by six with minutes to play and steph curry and klay thompson made back-to-back-to-back three-pointers and the warriors denied toronto a victory and fans their first ever nba title, for now. there will be, of course, some second guessing and some questions about if kevin durant should have been cleared to play at all. he had only gone through one practice the day before, before he got out there and gave it a go last night, and he looked good, but they're saying this injury is different from the original calf injury. they are saying this is an achilles injury, and this could be more than just a championship they're losing out on. durant could be out for a considerable amount of time, including into next season, depending on the extent of an achilles injury. these take some time to come

back from. >> he put his body on the line, guys. >> he certainly did. and the leads to the final game ever that's going to be played there in oracle. t.j., we're seeing the prices skyrocket for the last two games that were there. what does it look like now? >> yeah, games three and four, remember, somebody paid $93,000 for two tickets to game three, $101,000 for two tickets to game four. they know this is going to be the last warriors game in oracle. if you want to use that as your baseline, you can see it going even higher. >> i know, you'll be there. you'll be there, and you know what's free? you can watch game six right here on abc. it doesn't cost you anything. >> that's a bargain. >> 8:30 eastern here on abc thursday. it's going to be a heck of a game. all right, and we're going to turn now to the investigation into that deadly helicopter crash right here in new york city. the chopper slamming down on top of a building right in manhattan, killing the pilot on board. take a look at the scene on the roof. you can barely make out the chopper and the wreckage.

abc's gio benitez is outside the building with the latest. good morning, gio. >> reporter: michael, good morning to you. yeah, the weather right was a lot like it is right now, rainy and foggy. the big question for investigators, why was the helicopter in the air at all? this morning, ntsb investigators are working to understand how a helicopter ended up in flames at the top of a new york city high-rise. >> we felt the building shake, and then all of a sudden, we saw the debris falling off the side. i thought a plane hit the building. >> reporter: the chopper had taken off from the east river helipad at 1:32 p.m. this video shows a helicopter flying in the area just minutes earlier, at times erratically. officials cannot say definitively whether it's the doomed flight. moments later at 1:43, the deadly crash. these photos showing the wreckage. very little was left behind. nathan hutton was on the 29th floor. >> the only way i can describe it is like someone standing next to you and they give you a hard

shove and you're like, whoa, what's that? >> reporter: they rush down the stairs. >> what's going through your mind at that time? what are you thinking? >> everyone was, like, anxious and jittery in the staircase. now we're in the lobby, and they said, run. >> reporter: officials say there are no signs of terrorism but that's where many minds went. >> if you're a new yorker, you have a level of ptsd from 9/11. as soon as you hear an aircraft hit a building, my mind goes where new york's mind goes. >> reporter: the chopper was flying within faa restricted air space within a mile of trump tower. the pilot, the only fatality and the only person as board identified as tim mccormack, a volunteer firefighter. he spoke with our abc news affiliate in 2014 after ha

bird hit his windshield. >> a little bit of pandemonium, you try to gather yourself. >> reporter: those who knew him say he was a very experienced pilot, but this morning no word on how he ended up crash landing on the top of a building or why he was flying the chopper in such rainy and foggy weather. and incredibly, here on the ground, no injuries. in that building behind me, no injuries. i can tell you though, if that chopper had crashed here on these busy streets near times square, we would be having a very different discussion this morning, cecilia. >> you would hate to think about what could have happened. gio, thank you. we will turn to washington and weeks of negotiations and a major shift by the justice department, officials there agreeing to hand over key evidence found in special counsel robert mueller's russia investigation. our senior national correspondent, terry moran joins us from the white house. what do we know about the material that's being turned over? >> reporter: well, cecilia, this is some -- some of the most crucial material on the issue of obstruction of justice. this is material not in the mueller report. it's investigators' notes and interview transcripts, internal documents from the investigation

itself. it says a couple things. congress does hold some cards in this confrontation with the executive branch and president trump, and the executive branch, the white house doesn't see a lot to worry about from this investigation at this point, but i don't think this is going to make for peace between the two of them. today, the house will whether it is necessary to get more information. >> thank you. . >> this is the framing joe biden wants. he is in iowa with president trump, and that's the conversation he wants to have. and joe biden will take on the criticism that his campaign is really just a return to the past. president trump and democrats are saying that. biden will say i gather some people think it's a return to the past. i don't see it that way.

he will say i see it as embracing enduring values that have made america america. that is his answer to the question tt he is just a rerun. he said for me it's the only way america is going to have a future. cecilia. >> he is expecting to hit the president hard. thank you. quite a day in iowa today. >> sure is. >> now to the new reports this morning about the north korean dicta dictator's assassinated half-brother. martha raddatz has the latest on that. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the wall street journal said that kim jong-nam met with cia operatives and could explain why kim jong-un's older brother was killed two years ago in that brazen move in an airport caught on surveillance vision. two women smearing a nerve agent on his face. he died a short time later.

lawyers say the women were unwitting pawns in the assassination. they believe that kim jong-un was responsible for his brother's death. "washington post" bureau chief anna fifield in a book released today says that kim jong-nam usually met his handlers in malaysia or singapore. she said that inside the backpack he was carrying when he was killed was $120,000 in cash that could have been payment for his intelligence information, or earnings from his gambling business. much remains unclear about his relationship with the cia, and as you can imagine, michael, the cia has no comment this morning. >> all right. as expected. thank you so much, martha. now to a major breach of customs at the border protection data, raising serious privacy questions. the agency collects images of license plates and photographs of people crossing the border. pier thomas has more. >> reporter: new concerns about

privacy recognition after border protection. the agency collects images of license plates and photographs of people crossing the border. customs and border protections says a contract of violating security rules by transferring and storing collected security information on a private network. the contractor has not been hacked, and so far none of the information is showing up on the dark web or internet, but so much information is out there and vulnerable, cecilia. >> pierre, thank you. the heat threat out west. record-breaking temperatures hitting the coast, there are heat warnings and advisories from arizona to washington. ginger zee is here. >> cecilia, i know you're from the bay area, but san francisco airport has never seen 100-degree temperature or higher in june, july or august until yesterday. yes, they did a daily records broke.

we will seeing monterey, 97. ocean side, 85 was the daily record. that was just one of the days. we've got another very hot day today and tomorrow. that's why you have those excessive heat warnings from arizona right through southern california. lo at portland today to 97. a quick look at what's coming water wise. this is a river north carolina, dozens of rescues. they are now drying out. >> jirginger, thank you. we have an incredible rescue in ohio. six teens caught in a flash flood, some stuck in a storm drain. janai norman has the story. good morning, janai. >> reporter: robin, good morning. at first it was one teen who was swept away by floodwaters, and eventually, all six between the ages of 13 and 15 needed help and that water was nearly three feet high from a heavy downpour when the fire chief went in to save them. this is the moment rescuers saved three of six teenage boys from rushing waters in northern ohio. >> got it, hold on, hold on tight! >> reporter: the six teens were

playing in a creek when flash floodwaters forced one of them into a storm drain. >> i think one got swept in and the rest were trying to help. >> reporter: the fire chief, soaked from head to toe after jumping in those same flood waters to save the teens, as the other five also ended up caught in the current trying to save their friend. >> they kind of linked arms to try to get them out and a couple more got sucked in. >> reporter: the water carried one of the teens a half mile underground while another was able to escape and call police. you can see officers' bodycam video capturing some of the rescu rescues. two boys able to hold onto a cement wall as first responders spring into action. >> how many of you are right there? >> three. >> reporter: police throwing a rope and life preserver down. >> you're all right. take a deep breath. >> reporter: pulling three boys to safety while the other two were rescued farther down stream. the police lieutenant said pulling those teens through flood waters felt like pulling a

mac truck. they had to do a lot of work to gethose teens out. >> scary. >> thanks, janai. >> thank you, janai. to another apparent shark attack in the waters off north carolina just a week after a young girl lost most of her leg. a 19-year-old has been bitten on the foot and now he's speaking out from his hospital bed and abc's erielle reshef has the story. good morning, erielle. >> reporter: hey. good morning to you, michael. that teen says he has been surfing for about seven years and has never seen a shark in the water, but all that changed monday when he felt sharp teeth sink into his foot. the second victim in a shark attack off the coast of north carolina in just a week speaking out from the hospital. >> i just felt something grab onto my leg, and i was, like, oh my gosh. i told my friend, oh my gosh. i think i just got bit by a shark. >> reporter: 19-year-old austin reed surfing monday when he said a shark suddenly took hold, quickly letting go but not before leaving its mark. >> i have a report of a possible

shark bite. 19-year-old male conscious and breathing at this time. >> reporter: the teenager emerging from the water, his foot bloodied, rushed to the hospital. speaking to us just before undergoing surgery. >> it was just five marks. you can see the bone -- some bones in my foot. it got me good. >> he said, yo, i got bit by a shark and austin is one to goof around a lot. tyler thought he was just kidding and then he looked at his foot and realized he wasn't. >> reporter: the dangerous encounter coming just days after a separate incident three hours up the coast. 17-year-old paige winter losing her leg in that attack. >> is she awake and breathing? >> yeah, if she is, barely. she's in bad shape. her leg is almost gone. >> reporter: paige's father managing to punch the shark and freeing his daughter, saving her life. shark sightings are up. the u.s. averages about 19 shark attacks each year but experts say that nearly doubled in 2018.

heading to game six after the warriors pulled off a down-to-the-wire win last night, beating the raptors. they lost star kevin durant to another injury. and the ntsb is now investigating this helicopter crash right here in the heart of new york city. a pilot dying after that chopper crash landed on the roof of a 54-story building. >> we remember when that happened yesterday afternoon. everybody was just on high alert. our heart goes out to his family. >> indeed. we have the latest on red sox legend david ortiz who is now back in the u.s. being treated in a hospital in boston this morning after being shot in the dominican republic. big papi suffering serious injuries but in stable condition. our chief national correspondent, tom llamas, is there in boston with the latest. good morning, tom. >> reporter: robin, good morning to you. david ortiz is now under the care of doctors and staff here at mass general in boston. he did undergo emergency surgery in santa domingo, and there are

reports this morning quoting his assistant who believes it was hired killers who shot big papi, this as overnight there was a very powerful moment on television. one of his former teammates and once one of the most feared pitchers in major league baseball, pedro martinez, breaking down on camera talking about big papi. overnight, this air ambulance in santa domingo, landing in boston, chartered by the red sox and carrying a wounded david ortiz. the team not taking any chances. big papi arriving at mass general for further treatment. his condition worse than first reported after what police are calling an ambush. the attack captured on this surveillance video. ortiz out at a local nightclub as a gunman approaches from behind, shooting ortiz in the back. you can see him here, slumped over. the bullet exiting his abdomen. his doctor in the d.r. saying

the gunshot caused damage to his liver, and small and large intestine. ortiz undergoing surgery to remove parts of those organs. one suspect, eddie garcia, captured by the scene after being beaten and held by clubgoers. authorities believe another suspect may be at large. >> it's a horrific incident. our focus right now, our exclusive focus, is on his health and well-being. >> reporter: the 43-year-old former red sox player is a boston legend who led the team to three world series. once one of the league's greatest hitters and a fan favorite. on monday night, the red sox faithful showing their love. >> won't you please join us as we offer a moment of reflection, thought and prayer for a complete healing and a full recovery for our beloved big papi. >> reporter: and on the field, former teammates and players concerned, but wishing the retired slugger well. >> they talk about superheroes without capes. he's a superhero without a cape. that's the way we see him.

he will be okay. >> reporter: and former red sox pitcher pedro martinez getting emotional, talking about ortiz on the mlb network. >> my heart is with david, with his family, with everybody that cares about david, because just one coward out there, wanted to do that to someone that didn't deserve it. >> reporter: and big papi's son posting this message on instagram, writing in part, pops, i love you. there is nothing stronger than you. so the exact motive is still unclear right now, but authorities are ruled out robbery. ortiz, when he woke up from surgery the first people he wanted to see were his family, robin. >> the family thought the medical treatment was up to par there, but the red sox, they wanted him back with doctors that they knew very well in boston. >> reporter: that's exactly right, robin. ortiz's father said the surgeon was great. the medical care in the dominican republic was great, but the red sox made it clear, they wanted to take care of him in boston.

the team doctors know the athletes so well and the red sox went on to say david ortiz is one of the most important players in their history and that's why they wanted to make sure he had the best care here, robin. >> we pray for a full recovery for big papi. thank you so much, tom. michael. thank you, robin. now to a new warning about crane dangers and high wind. there is an alert here in new york city this morning, and this as we learn new details about the investigation into that deadly crane collapse in dallas. abc's clayton sandell has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, investigators are piecing together why this crane came crashing down on a dallas apartment building. >> absolute chaos. i can't believe what i'm [bleep] seeing right now. >> reporter: experts say one focus of the investigation will be whether the crane was allowed to turn freely, making it better to withstand the force of sunday's 70 mile-per-hour gusts. >> oh, my god, the crane is falling over. oh, my god. >> they have a system on them, that in the event of high winds,

that they will release the brakes and let them weather vain. >> reporter: the crane crushing part of the parking garage and apartments below killing 29-year-old kiersten smith and injuring five others. experts say these massive towers rising hundreds of feet are built to withstand high winds. >> i'm not going to say high winds can't -- cannot blow one down, but i will say this. it will take a substantial amount. >> reporter: the crane's owner, bigge, has been hit with 17 osha safety violations since 2013. that year a bigge crane collapsed in arkansas, killing one man, injuring eight others. the company eventually settled a paid a $28,000 fine. crane accidents in crowded urban spaces are known to be deadly. in april, a crane collapsed in a downtown seattle street, killing four. >> whoa! oh, it broke. >> reporter: and this horrifying moment in new york city in 2016. the crane falling, killing one and injuring three.

we are back now with a summer beach alert. a warning about using pool floats in the ocean. a little boy in north carolina was rescued after being swept out to sea on a unicorn raft. we have a 911 call and an exclusive with the family. abc's paula faris is here with all this. good morning, paula. >> reporter: good morning to you, cecilia. good morning, everyone. in a matter of seconds this 8-year-old was almost a half mile offshore. the wind pushing his floaty. the float so big, it acted like a sail. >> i was really scared and thinking, like, i might die. and all that stuff. >> reporter: it was supposed to be a fun family day at the beach but it turned into a terrifying floating fiasco for this ohio family. >> my son is floating out in the middle of the ocean on a floaty thing. he doesn'tave a life jacket on, and he doesn't really know

how to swim. >> reporter: 8-year-old declan seen here on this unicorn float is drifting further and further into the distance. every second in the water, a risk to his survival. his uncle jumping into action right away. >> my brother is going out to swim to him. he is almost to him. oh, my gosh -- >> ma'am, ma'am? >> my brother is not even halfway out to get him. he is getting so far out so quickly. we need someone out there quickly. >> reporter: but before officials could even get to the scene, a team of rescue volunteers set out to sea to bring the young boy back to the beach. >> it was a lot of tears, exhalation, being grateful and thankful for those rescuers. >> reporter: the rescuers made their way back onto dry land, declan in hand, delivering him to the warm embrace of his mother's arms.

this morning, officials on the scene working to determine what led to the deadly chopper crash in new york city, trying to understand how the chopper ended up in flames. >> i thought a plane hit the building. >> reporter: the chopper took off from the east river helipath at 1:32 p.m. this video shows a chopper in the area flying at times erratically. officials cannot say definitively whether it's the boomed flight. moments later the deadly crash. the photos showing the wreckage, very little left behind. the chopper was flying within faa restricted air space within a mile of trump tower. the only person on board identified as tim mccormack, a volunteer firefighter. we're also told that this pilot was very experienced, which may be why he chose that rooftop for his emergency landing rather than the busy streets of new york city. back to you. >> gio, thank you.

we turn to the measles outbreak sweeping the country. the cdc saying the number of cases topping 1,000 in 28 states so far this year. this is the largest number of cases since 1992. most of the people who came down with the illness had never been vaccinated. the cdc is warning the virus is so contagious, the close contact of summer camps is a legitimate concern for this virus spreading. measles could re-establish himself if vaccination levels lower. major concern there. >> a lot of summer camps. you're right about that. >> now to the golden state warrior, surviving game five of the nba finals, beating the raptors by one but suffering, as you know, a crushing blow on the court when one of their superstars went down. let's go back to t.j. in toronto with the latest on kevin durant's injury. t.j.? >> reporter: yeah, a big win for the warriors but a huge loss as well. they now get a chance to go back

to oracle in oakland with the series now 3 games to 2. last night, kevin durant, the superstar forward, coming back after a month being outs with an injury. he gets in the game and early in the second quarter, he makes a move and looks like he reinjured the same right leg. the warriors are now saying it's a different injury. it's an achilles injury that how him out and it could have him out a long time, into the next season. the crowd cheered. some of the raptors telling the crowd to cut it out. we did not hear from k.d. after the game, only in an instagram post. he posted, guys, i'm hurting deep in my soul is what he wrote on instagram. but watching my brothers get this win is like taking a shot of tequila. it was giving him new life. that's all we're hearing from him but he went out there and sacrificed his body and it cost him dearly. and the warriors have one final game at oracle arena. >> t.j., you spent a lot of time with both these teams. what is your sense this new

>> so interesting. here is the actual study in jama internal medicine. they looked at over 43,000 women and were really trying to make -- ask the question s this there a connection between artificial light exposure while we're sleeping and weight gain and obesity. and what they found, any exposure to artificial light while we sleep -- that could be a night light, street lights outside, sleeping with the television on. 17% more likely to gain weight. we do think there's a cause there, that it suppresses melatonin. the worst, people who fall asleep with the tv on, those people gain average of 11 pounds over a five-year period. when you talk about a way to target obesity, we hear so much about diet and exercise which are important. we don't think about the things that could be going on while we're actually sleeping and this is a potential target. >> darkness. i just got a black-out shade a couple nights ago.

[ cheers and applause ] >> thank you, guys. >> no matter what anyone says, no matter what anybody says, i mean, you truly are a trail blazer. you did that at teen vogue and you changed the conversation about inclusion and diversity. what is your new mission for this beautiful book? >> first of all, i just have to say, as a journalist sitting in front of you, this a dream come true. thank you for having me on. [ applause ] i'm going to try not to get weepy. listen, my mission with this book is to encourage every woman, every young person out there to push back against all of those messages that we have all been fed that make us feel we are not enough. we are not smart enough. we're not beautiful enough. we're not successful enough. we're not woke enough.

because the reality is no matter where you come from, no matter how big your dreams are you, you already are more than enough, even if you are a work in progress. >> you have to get past that imposter syndrome that so many of us at every age experience. the way you -- she really goes here. you talk about a lot of highs. you're young, 32. okay, she had a lot -- you also talk about the lows. here, you have this position. but you didn't have the same salary. the same authority as someone who normally has that position. and you said it was important for to you talk about the highs and lows in the book. >> because they are universal. >> right. >> as a journalist for ten years i spent my career elevating stories that i felt mattered because i believe there are universal truths in the stories that women never get to tell.

and i had to realize i have to take my own advice. it's time to tell more of my story. if i'm going to be held up as a trail blazer by you, i better be doing the work to make sure that i am leaving that trail with sign posts along the way that make it easier, less confusing, less daunting for the next generation that is coming up behind me. by the way, i don't want to be a first if i'm going to be a last. i want to be the first of many. i feel like i owe it to this generation that is coming up behind me and they are fierce by the way. they're going to face a lot of things, burnout, complicated relationships, negotiating your salary. we live in an 180-character world. >> and it's not always perfect. >> no, it's not. >> and the woman who helped you most, sitting right there in the front row. your mama. [ applause ] what did she share with you? how did she help you? >> everything.
