there wasn't much left of a small plane that burst into flames after crashing on a road in phoenix. and third degree burns and was hospitalized in critical condition. no one on the ground was involved. one of the plane's wings was sheared off when it hit a light pole.

investigators are looking into the cause of the crash. turning now to the arrest after an urgent manhunt in southern california. >> an off-duty sheriff's deputy was shot at close range while waiting for his meal at a fast food restaurant. inhese surveillance photos is the suspect who shot deputy joseph gilbert solano in the head. >> definitely a family man, loves spending time with his family. >> reporter: he was off duty and waiting for his order at a jack in the box when police say mckenzie nilsson shot the deputy, who was wearing plain clothes, at point blank range. >> i thought something dropped in the kitchen, it was a pop, a loud pop. >> reporter: an exhaustive manhunt ensued. police released this picture of nelson. authorities say he later walked into a church and called his father. >> during that call he referred to committing murder in southern california. >> reporter: his dad called 911 and nelson was later taken into custody. authorities say they found a

revolver suspected to be the murder weapon in his car. deputy solano is on life support in the hospital behind me. at this point authorities believe the shooting was random. they're interviewing the suspect and say he could be connected to another murder in los angeles on the same day. in los angeles, will carr, abc news. a medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death of a 17-year-old high school student near atlanta. alise purefoy was a member of her school's dance team. >> she went to the school monday morning for workout, then collapsed and died. purefoy was also captain of the cheerleading squad and had a 3.9 gpa. she was going into her senior year. tests conducted on two giraffes at a safari park in south florida confirm the animals were killed by a lightning strike. the giraffes were 10 and 1 year old. a pathology report says they died immediately on may 3rd because of the lightning. a statement from lion country safari says it constantly monitors the safety of its animals.

♪ it was 25 years ago today that nicole brown simpson and ron goldman were killed just outside simpson's home. >> the murders led to one of the most sensational trials in recent history. but it wasn't until two days later that the story became clear. >> we're opening up the "abc news vault" to june 14th, 1994, with abc's peter jennings. >> reporter: in los angeles today, the coroner's office announced that o.j. simpson's former wife and a male friend died of multiple stab wounds and other injuries inflicted by some kind of sharp instrument. there has certainly been speculation as to whether o.j. simpson himself is a suspect, but there has been no comment from police. here's abc's brian rooney.

>> reporter: o.j. simpson was in seclusion with family and friends at his home today. his lawyer visited for about 15 minutes. the los angeles county coroner's office said the two victims died of sharp force injuries and multiple stab wounds. the bodies of nicole brown simpson and ronald goldman were discovered about midnight sunday on the steps outside the condominium where mrs. simpson lived. the simpsons' two children were found asleep inside. witnesses at this restaurant in brentwood say mrs. simpson had dinner there sunday night and left her glasses. goldman, a waiter at the restaurant who knew mrs. simpson, went to her home apparently to return the glasses. within hours both were dead. o.j.'s lawyer said simpson and his former wife had been together with their children earlier on sunday. >> they were at a function with the family and with the kids. and everything apparently was fine. >> reporter: o.j. simpson flew to chicago before midnight sunday shortly before the bodies were found. he checked into the o'hare plaza

hotel about 6:00 a.m. to attend an event for hertz rent a car. he returned on a morning flight atom thedriveno polis angeed yesterday afternoon. at the same time, technicians examined the scene of the murders and o.j. simpson's home about two miles away. they removed a pair of sneakers and several los angeles news organizations say police also found a bloody glove that matches a glove found at the scene of the murder. o.j. simpson and his wife were divorced in 1992. three years after he pleaded no contest to a charge of beating her up. friends say they were seen together in recent months and even talked of reconciliation. brian rooney, abc news, los angeles. this is judy mueller. the simpsons story was a hot topic on radio talk shows today. >> first of all, i want to say i'm appalled by the media. we convict people before anything is even proven. >> reporter: that sentiment was expressed by a number of callers, including simpson's attorney, howard weitzman.

>> first i would ask the public not to prejudge someone like o.j. simpson. and we need to wait and see how this thing plays out. >> reporter: many people expressed disbelief that simpson, one of america's sports heroes, could have had any part in such a chilling crime. >> i can't believe that o.j. has anything to do with it. and he has an impeccable reputation. and very nice guy. >> reporter: as a running back at the university of southern california, simpson earned the heisman trophy. he went on to become one of the most exciting players in the lower of the national football league, setting the nfl's single-season rushing record and earning a spot in pro football's hall of fame. nchis retirement in 1979, simpson has worked as a sports commentator for abc and nbc, a spokesman for hertz rent a car, and in recent years as an actor. >> he is almost an institution.

guilty as prosecutors revealed new disturbing details in the search for jennifer dulos. abc's linsey davis was at the courthouse. >> reporter: the estranged husband of missing connecticut mother jennifer dulos is out on bond just hours after prosecutors reported what they say they found along with her blood in her kitchen. >> defendant's dna was found in a mixture on the faucet inside. >> reporter: fotis dulos and his live-in girlfriend entered pleas of not guilty. >> we enter not guilty pleas. >> reporter: both charged with tampering with evidence after police say on the day jennifer dulos went missing, a man matching fotis dulos' description was seen on surveillance video dumping trash bags later found to contain jennifer's blood. his attorneys tell us his client has an alibi. >> rather than 30 bags being thrown out, i'm told there were perhaps two.

autopsies to determine how the bton d sox . e w pments heom >> the 43-year-old baseball legend is recovering from a second surgery in boston. abc's tom llamas is there. >> reporter: david ortiz on his feet, taking his first steps since being ambushed and shot. but he's not in the clear, his family saying he will have to spend several days inside the intensive care unit of a boston hospital. doctors performing a second surgery after he landed from santo domingo. his wife releasing a statement saying ortiz is stable, awake, and resting comfortably, but also asking for privacy. ortiz underwent emergency surgery in the d.r., doctors removing parts of his liver, small and large intestines. medical experts say the gunshot wound could have easily killed him. the retired slugger shot in the back on sunday night while out in a nightclub in his hometown. this man, eddie feliz garcia, taken into custody by police in connection with the shooting after witnesses grabbed and beat

wikileaks founder julian assange to the u.s. to face justice. assange faces 18 counts accusing him of soliciting and publishing classified information. right now he's serving a 50-week prison sentence in britain for jumping bail. it's a tense situation in hong kong this morning. protesters faced off with riot police as they tried to block access to government buildings. that was where lawmakers were scheduled to start work on a controversial law that would allow suspects to be sent to china for the trial. the start of the legislative session was delayed because of the protests. it's unclear when it will begin. today marks three years since a massacre that at the time was the deadliest mass shooting in u.s. history. 49 people were killed, dozens of others wounded at the pulse nightclub in orlando. the gunman was also killed after a three-hour standoff with police. the shooting remains the deadliest attack against the lgbtq community in the country's history. and another milestone anniversary, the brutal murders of nicole brown simpson and ron goldman happened 25 years ago today.
