after four other tankers were attacked in the region. which increased tensions between the u.s. and iran. oil prices dropped dramatically after the incident was first reported and initially climbed more than 4%. today's apparent attack comes as the prime minister of japan visits iran seeking to ease tensions. it comes a day after iranian-backed rebels from yemen attacked a saudi airport. we'll have much more as more information becomes available. but now bax here at home to president trump's latest comments raising new concern about foreign influence on american elections. >> during an exclusive interview with abc news, the president said if a foreign government offered him dirt on one of his rivals in the 2020 election he would take it. >> that comment set off immediate backlash. abc's lana zak from washington. lana, good morning. >> good morning, yeah, guys, he would accept that dirt and wouldn't necessarily let the fbi know about it. and the president suggested that his own fbi director was wrong for suggesting that his campaign should do otherwise. >> reporter: in an exclusive

interview with george stephanopoulos, the president said he would not necessarily contact the fbi if he were approached by foreign figures with information on his nt.is ct w fausru tower meeting in june 2016 when don junior received an email from a business associate promising dirt on hillary clinton from the russian government. >> should don have gone to the fbi when he got that email? >> okay. let's put yourself in that position. you're a congressman. somebody comes up and says, hey, i have information on your opponent, do you call the fbi? i'll tell you what, i've seen a lot of things in my life. i don't think in my whole life i've ever called the fbi. in my whole life. you don't call the fbi. you throw somebody out of your office. you do whatever -- >> al gore got a stolen briefing book. he called the fbi. >> that's different from a stolen briefing book. this is someone who said we have information on your opponent. oh, let me call the fbi. give me a break. life doesn't work that way. >> the fbi director said that could happen.

>> fbi director is wrong. >> your campaign this type is foreigners, russia, china or someone else offers information on the opponent should they accept it or call the fbi? >> i think you do both. you might want to listen. there's nothing wrong with listening. if somebody called from a country, norway, we have information on your opponent, oh, i think i'd want to hear it. >> you want that kind of interference in our elections? >> not an interference. they have information. i think i'd take it. if i thought there was something wrong i'd go to the fbi, if i thought something was wrong. if somebody comes up with oppo research, all right, they come up with-o po research, oh, let's call the fbi. the fbi doesn't have enough agents to take care of it. you talk honestly to congressmen, they do it. they always have. that's the way it is. that's called oppo research. >> reporter: the president's comments contradicts his own attorney general bill barr.

here's what barr said after the investigation. >> going forward, what if a foreign adversary, let's say, north korea, offers a presidential candidate dirt on a competitor in 2020, do you agree with me the campaign should immediately contact the fbi? >> if a foreign intelligence service, a representative of a foreign government, says we have dirt on your opponent should they say i love it, let's meet? or should they contact the fbi? >> if the foreign intelligence service does, yes. >> now, this is obviously taking place in the context of investigations that are ongoing into the 2016 election. and some democrats believe this should fuel calls for impeachment. out on the campaign trail 2020 hopeful kamala harris said president trump is putting his self-interests before our democracy interests. and at least one republican congressman said he is disagreeing publicly with president trump on this. as for the fbi, kenneth and janai, this morning, they have no comment. >> all right, lana.

of course, we'll have more on that exclusive interview with the president coming up on "good morning america." lana, thank you. former communications director hope hicks has agreed to appear before the house judiciary committee. the closed-door interview set for next week will make her the first former trump aide to testify before the panel which is looking into potential obstruction by the president. the white house recently told hicks to defy a subpoena for documents. we're turning now to another big story. a possible link between a suspect in the david ortiz shooting case and a shooting in pennsylvania. that news broke overnight as we learned more on the ambush on ortiz and how much money the suspects were allegedly paid to kill the former baseball star. abc's maggie rulli has the latest. >> reporter: several suspects are now in custody in the shooting of david ortiz. in a dramatic move, the chief of police holding up the gun used to try to kill the former red sox star. authorities releasing this

surveillance video showing two hyundais parked, one man getting out. a motorcycle seen with two men on it driving towards the bar. the gunman walking up to big papi, shooting him in the back. the shots sending clubgoers running from their seats. the suspected shooter identified as rolfi ferriera cruz, authorities say the group was offered 4,000 pesos, less than $8,000. also in custody, eddy feliz garcia charged as an accomplice to attempted murder. beloved in his hometown, ortiz often traveled the streets of santo domingo with little or no security, trusting his fans to protect him. ortiz is back in boston and underwent a second surgery. his wife said he's awake, stable and resting comfortably. she went on to thank his fans and the boston red sox for their support, but now she's asking for privacy. maggie rulli, abc news, new york.

>> associated press reported a brief relationship in santo domingo may have led to the shooting but authorities are not commenting. as for the one suspect still on the loose, he's wanted for a shooting in pennsylvania. last year, the victim in that case was also shot in the back. and the dominican republic is defending its tourism industry after a series of high profile deaths. the government's tourism bureau said it's now working with hotels to make sure food and beverages are safe. this follows the death of several american tourists who reportedly passed away after drinking from the mini bars in their hotel rooms. an offduty deputy shot at a fast food restaurant has died. joseph solano had been on life support since monday. his family and co-workers gathered outside the hospital to escort his body to the coroner's office. investigators say solano was in plain clothes waiting to pick up food in a random attack.

the search continues for a black bear spotted on the train tracks in philadelphia during rush hour. it may be the same bear seen roaming a philadelphia neighborhood over the weekend. meanwhile, just north of new york city, a deer made a mad dash through this shopping mall. taking time to check out a sporting goods store. a worker managed to get the deer to run back outside without getting hurt. >> animals gone wild. we turn now to the search for a mother and her daughter on the run this morning. >> police in oregon say the two took off together, after the mother refused to get the cancer treatment that her daughter needs. reigniting the story over parental rights.

>> reporter: this morning, the search is intensifying for a 13-year-old oregon girl who's fighting cancer. >> her daughter has medical needs and we want to make sure we get her the help she needs. >> reporter: overnight, police releasing a description now saying that kylee dixon and her mother christina are traveling in an orange jeep wrangler. according to investigators they've been on the run since kylee missed a scheduled surgery for her illness. her mother claimed on a gofundme page that medicine has not been working to treat her tumor. christina has been relying on natural medicine including cbd oil to treat her daughter. >> i find that really shocking. i mean, i believe that every parent should have a right to treat their child, you know, what they see fit. >> reporter: the teen was ordered into state custody earlier this month. but when investigators went to their home, christina and kylee was nowhere to be found. >> when they went to look for kylee on june 7th at her
