area. this is abc 7 mornings. it's saturday, june 15th, good morning, and thanks so much for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with the first look at the accuweather forecast. here's meteorologist lisa argen. she's tracking doppler 7 radar. >> low clouds, even mist and drizzle accident marine layer up to 2,000 feet will take time to clear visibility, just two miles at the shoreline and temperatures look like this in the near 50s in san francisco and mid-50s around the bay and north 50s in the bay. we are cooler by a couple of degrees. tw to four degrees and the 13-degree cooler, kind of suspect on that on the

peninsula. the drizzle will burn back by the coast. great start for you, grab the jacket and by 2:00 we still have cool numbers around the bay. so a little bit below average for most of you. inland, we're beginning to warm up into the 60s, and by 6:00 the clouds make a quick comeback and your father's day forecast in a few minutes. >> lisa, thank you. police are stepping up patrols after a group of teenagers attacked pedestrians. it connects two communities. abc 7 news reporter luz pena has the latest. >> four weeks ago the east pallo alto community celebrated the opening of this pedestrian bridge and joy turned into fear for some residents. >> i saw four or five teenagers, and i was scared, too, after seeing that. >> at 8:00 p.m. on thursday the first attack was reported. >> they just converged on the victim and started beating on

the victim on top of the foot bridge. >> reporter: the first victim was attacked right here by five teenagers. three of them ran west and two ran east. let me show you an aerial shot of the bridge. in the skymap 7 technology you can see how this connects two east palo alto neighborhoods and police are looking on both sides. >> an hour and 20 minutes later the second report came in. in the second robbery was described as six to eight suspects who surrounded the victim demanding the contents of his pocket. the victim, according to police pulled out a knife and the teenagers ran off. >> it makes me wary, of course, which is a sad commentary. >> east palo alto police searched the entire area for surveillance video to identify the suspects. >> they'll have four patrol cars in the area and there's one here parked and they'll also alert residents to not walk alone, but to walk in groups.

in palo alto, luz pen a abc 7. a san francisco non-profit is reporting a spike in opioid overdose deaths. dope and the office of the medical examiner are reporting ten deaths since last thursday. most occurred while the person was alone. dope is a group that teaches people how to use narcan and using needle exchange and can help prevent opioid overdose deaths. one person is dead after a shooting inside a costco store. witnesses heard an argument before shots rang out. that caused a panic as shoppers tried to take cover or run. this happened last night in corona. that's in riverside county. police say the gunman is in custody. two other people were injured. time now is 5:03. bart is looking to get back on track after a tough week. equipmet problems caused systemwide delays on friday and that issued following complaints

about sweltering cars as well as concerns over the new fair gates. trevino fortson has more. >> another day and unfortunately another bump on the road for bart to improve its relationship with riders. friday morning a problem with the train equipment caused major delays at bay fair and nearby bart stations. >> instead of making automatic switches between our tracks that allowed the trains to function on their proper route, we had to crank them manually and it creates a very large backup. sky 7 captured workers switching trains on the dublin, pleasanton lines for hours. the issue was picked before the afternoon rush and the hiccup rounded out a week of other problems like no air-conditioning in cars during high temps. >> it was in the 90s. we were perspiring. >> some of the train cars are 20, 30, 40 years old. it takes a lot of love and care and a lot of maintenance and each with that sometimes it

lombardier transportation plans to begin assembling rail cars this summer. at least 50 people will get hired at first and pittsburgh's mayor hopes that those jobs improve the quality of life in his city. >> there is a jobs housing imbalance in east county. we really need to create more jobs here in pittsburgh so people can live, work and play here locally. more than 700 new cars will y good-bye to the bart ticket. the transit agency says it plans to phase out the paper ticket by the end of the year and pushing all riders toward using clipper cars. last year bart added a 50-cent per-trip fee by using paper tickets. abc 7 -- abc 7 news devoted a week to covering bart as part of our commitment to building a better bay area. you can see all those stories on our website, abc 7 news.com. 5:06 is the time and happening today, and to help job seekers

hone their skills. they're holding a job readiness work shop to teach applicants for one of their jobs and hire ticket takers, ushers, custodian, security and a variety of other positions. chase center is expected to employ nearly 2500 people and today's work shop is at the bay view hunter's point ymca. >> santa clara county is holding the first transgender job fair today. transgender workers report twice the rate of other americans and nearly half are underemployed. the job fair begins at noon at the lgbtq + center in san jose. people who are transgender can drop off resumes and get tips for applying for county jobs. the toronto raptors are cooperating with the alameda county sheriff's office as they pursue a misdemeanor battery

charge against the gm. he was trying to get on the court after thursday night's championship win. officials say he didn't show his credential. >> you cannot push and shove multiple times a law enforcement officer in the performance of a duty. we law enforcement are not there to be pushed around. ware trying to do our job and simply a little bit of communication would have went a long way. >> a fan who was nearby said the deputy did not ask for credentials and najeri did not hit the deputy. we've been telling you about our efforts to build a better bay area and one of the many topics we're examining is homelessness. in fremont city officials hope to begin construction on the nf gagz center by the end of the year. however, the specific location is still up for debate with concern that the process is being rushed. >> there is growing concern over a growing problem. the city of fremont, not immune from homelessness and its

ongoing impact. not all, some have drug issues, chronic alcoholism, mental health issues. >> city officials are hoping to build a 45-bed navigation center b 2020. a dozen sites are now under consideration including this vacant lot owned by niles discovery church. however, nearly 3,000 people have already signed a petition against the specific location. >> this is part of it from the city services that homeless people need and deserve and this is also at a very busy intersection right next to the busy train track. >> church leaders who are supportive of the project were unavailable for comment, they will hold a study session to establish criteria which staff will use to narrow down the search. nearly 500 homeless people were city wide in 2017. the total will go up when new numbers are released this summer. we'll need to build more

affordable housing and that will take a while to come online and in the interim we have to start getting people off the street back into stable, permanent living situations. >> most neighbors want to help the homeless in some form, but say they want a say if the process. >> what if people want a follow up? how are they going to track them? it's a tragedy. >> the center would operate for five years. the city could choose a final location as soon as september. on the peninsula, the ritz carlton hotel in half moon bay has agreed to pay a seven-figure fine to settle a complaint it denied access to a nearby beach. they had turned them away from the parking area reserved from the public. you can see where the resort is on this map. the $1.6 million fine is the largest ever levied by the coastal commission. san francisco is a step

>> welcome back, everyone. the free montt fire department was called out to rescue a kitten yesterday. this is what they found. it was trapped inside a wall and was trying to claw its way out, but just couldn't do it. the firefighters were able to give it a leg up and then posed for a picture. it has a new home, too. the family living in the house has decided to keep it. speaking of feline, the battle brews on against a small coffee shop and a construction giant over the name cat. dion lim has the story from santa cruz where prominent names are now getting involved. >> when you walk into our quaint shop here i'm sure you're not going to mistake the construction equipment with the cafe. >> drew owner of cat and cruz

we helped to organize a visit for a san jose boy. >> we first intusroduced you to tyler gordon last month and he's gaining national attention for his celebrity portraits including this one of jennifer lopez and alex rodriguez. he told us his wish was to meet them and management team and the wish center that wish came true. amanda del castillo gave tyler the news. >> it's happening. you're going to the j. lo lo concert tonight and meet her in person and you'll be able to give her your painting. >> just a few hours later after dancing and singing along at the show, tyler got his meet and greet and presented j. lo and a. rod with the painting. >> that's amazing. >> that's awesome!

that's pretty strong southwesterly breeze going through the delta. here's tahoe in the low 40s going into the upper 70s today and a beautiful day in the mountains. widespread clouds and patchy drizzle this morning and mild and cool in the coast today and pretty nice weather for father's day. as we go through the morning hours you are opening up to the gray in fremont, hayward and oakland and by 10:30, 11:00, the clouds begin to peel back in the afternoon and a gray day at the coast and through the overnight hours a quick push inland again and once again, starting out with the gray skies and as it pulls back to the shoreline we could see a few peeks of sun and looking at a warmer father's day inland because around the bay about the same coast side still looking at mostly gray conditions and by monday a big ridge of high pressure builds in and we're looking at temperatures pretty comfortable around the shoreline and we're warming up into the 90s inland

and it's the summer spread and wednesday and the summer preview with summer getting closer arriving on friday and the numbers coming up a bit for everyone from the upper 50s and mid-70s and plenty of clouds with low 60s at the coastline so it will be cool in the south bay. how about mid-70s today? a bit shy of average in san jose. 75 in sunnyvale, and upper 70s for los altos. at the coast it's a cloudy and cool day. 62, daly city and the average high in the mid-60s and the north bay. it will be a mix from the 60s to petaluma and 70s in wine country and further north and 81 in calistoga and the east bay, plenty of mid-60s and hayward and oakland and 71 up toward castro valley and union city and head inland and you can see the inland valleys touching 80 today

and mid-70s for you in liver more and the accuweather forecast, morning gray with morning drizzle and 60s to near 70 around the bay and low 80s around the delta and we are warming up by 6 degrees inland and a couple of degrees along the bay and th warming trend begins inland, monday, tuesday, wednesday. we're comfortable at the coast and it's the onshore flow and not the offshore flow and we're not going to do what we did last weekend and as summer arrives early friday morning it is looking typical for what we would expect in june. >> 70s in wine country, not too bad. lisa, thank you. just ahead, a woman who wasn't going to let her thief as a cement mason,

clouds and fog and the pretty aggressive marine layer and we're looking at gray skies around the marine area. if you're out early you may need wipers and a heavy jacket. it is in the 50s in san francisco. upper 50s in san jose and the coast is certainly going to be cool today from the roof camera, a little breezy and we'll have the typical breeze up to 20 miles an hour and looking at numbers still in the 50s here with mid-50s in concord. 52, santa rosa. visibility, well, we're looking pretty good away from the shoreline and two miles miles mm and the 60s a riefrirriving inl the clouds clearing from the mid-morning hours all of the way to the coast and it will be a warm day mainly in the 60s and 70s. chris? >> thank you. more than 20 democrats want to run for the white house and we learned who made the cut for two different debates later this month.

abc news reporter trevor alt has more. >> after narrowing the field for the first democratic debate of the first 2020 race have been revealed. the first ten candidates taking the state, among that group, senator elizabeth warren, representative beto o'rourke and senator cory booker. the following night a separate group of ten, kamala harris, mayor pete buttigieg and the current front runner and former vice president joe biden. the large number of candidates will limit the chance for actual debate saying it was unlikely to be any real depth. >> i am prepared and basically, looking at less about what the other people are for or against and trying to figure out how i can get to the place where i can communicate to the american people what i believe why i'm running and why it's important. >> among those watching the race closely is president trump. he weighed in friday morning about his potential opponents

report sorn a robertson and jean david chu. she took the office after mayor ed lee's sudden death. happening today, speaker nancy pelosi and congresswoman jackie speier and mike thompson are gathering to discuss the state of health care. the meeting is part of the health care for all weekend of action and they'll highlight house democrats and protect people with pre-existing conditions as well as lowering hurdles to access and the cost of prescription drugs. the event starts at 3:00 a.m. in san francisco. the event will be live streamed. demonstrators converged in san francisco yesterday to protest a bill that would tie in the state's laws on childhood vaccinations. current law lets doctors write exemption requests to attend school without vaccinations. a bill would create the that d can siphon those exemptions. they say it's a violation of the

welcome back, everyone. there are reports of meat-free hamburger shortages. red robin and white castle both say they're running low on impossible foods popular meat-free patties and restaurant across the country. the company is rapidly expanding. redwood city-based impossible foods say its products are on the menu at about 9,000 restaurants now and they're about to appear at burger kings nationwide. a spokesperson for impossible would not comment on the reported shortages. a central valley pizza parlor is giving away free food, but there is a catch. you have to lock up your phone during the meal. the curry pizza company in fresno is calling it the talk to each other discount. here's how it works. customers place their phones in a basket and an employee puts them in a locker and if you complete the challenge you'll get the free pizza on the next visit. they are traying to get the customer focus on their meal
