news to build a better bay area, this is abc 7 mornings. it's saturday, june 15th, good morning and thanks so much for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with the first look at the accuweather forecast. here's meteorologist lisa argen tracking the weather for us. >> tons of cloud cover, mist and drizzle and a cool start to your saturday. so heading out, grab the jacket or wait a while, the only sunny spot is in lake tahoe right now at 48 degrees going for a high of 76. back home we're in the 50s and mountain view at 60 degrees right now. half moon bay, one-hour delays at sfo and due to the heavy cloud cover and it will be slow clearing throughout the mid-morning hours and 57 by the delta and pretty strong wind there and clouds around fairfield. so the marine layer has made its way all of the way to the inland valleys and this is san jose and

looking at the temperatures in the 60s by midday. we will get sun except at the coast. today, cooler than average tomorrow for father's day, we'll warm it up a bit, chris? >> lisa, thank you. on the peninsula, police are stepping up patrols after a group of teenagers attacked pedestrians on the foot bridge. it connects two communities. abc 7 news reporter luz pena has the latest. >> reporter: four weeks ago the east palo alto community celebrated the opening of this pedestrian bridge, a joy turned to fear for some residents. >> i saw four or five teenagers, and i was scared, too, after seeing them. >> at 8:00 p.m. on thursday the first attack was reported. >> they just converged on the victim and started beating on the victim on top of the foot bridge. >> according to east palo alto police, the first victim was attacked right here by five teenagers. three of them ran west and two ran east. let me show you an aerial shot

of the bridge. in the exclusive skymap 7 technology you can see how this bridge connects two east palo alto neighborhoods. police say they're looking on both sides. an hour and 20 minutes later the second report came in. >> in the second robbery it was described as six to eight suspects who surrounded the victim demanding the contents of his pocket. the victim, according to police pulled out a knife and the teenagers ran off. it makes me a little wary, which is a sad commentary. east palo alto police searched the entire area for surveillance video to identify the suspects. >> these palo alto police will have four cars in this area. there's one here parked and they'll alert residents in this place to not walk alone, but to walk if groups. in east palo alto, luz pena, abc 7 news. >> new this morning a san francisco non-profit is reporting a spike in deaths related to opioid overdoses. dope and the office of the

medical examiner are reporting ten deaths over the past week or so. most occurred while the person was alone. dope is a group that teaches people how it use narcan and does needle exchange. they're encouraging drug users to get help and to learn about narcan that can prevent overdose deaths. we are working to learn the condition of a baby boy who nearly drowned last night in antioch. fire fighters and paramedics revived the 23 month old after finding him unconscious at a swimming pool at a home on north francisco way. the child had been in the pool for about five minutes. rescuers tell us they detected his heartbeat after performing cpr for several minutes. he was rushed to the hospital. bart is looking to get back on track after a tough week. equipment problems caused systemwide delays on friday. those issues came after complaints earlier this week about sweltering cars and concerns over the new fair gates. abc 7 news reporter jovina fortson has more.

>> another day and unfortunately another bump to improve its relationship with riders. a problem with the train equipment caused major delays at nearby bart stations. >> instead of making automatic switches to function on the proper routes we have to crank them manually. >> sky 7 captured workers manually switching trains on to the fremont and dublin, pleasanton lines for hours. the issue was fixed before the afternoon rush, but the hiccup rounded out a week of other problems like no air-conditioning on cars during record high temps. >> take the 90s. >> realistically, some of our train cars are 20, 30, 40 years old. think about driving a car that old. it takes a lot of love and care and maintenance and even like that, sometimes it doesn't work. >> raised over the double stacked gates, and some disabled riders and people with strollers

find the new gates difficult. >> like, seriously? my baby could have got smashed up in there. >> i've been riding bart for 40 years. overall it's -- it's -- it's good. >> devore carter wants people to know it's not all bad. she's looking forward to the big changes bart has planned like the fleet of the future cars to roll out. >> one thing bart want to make clear is they rely on their riders for information. so if you are on a car and have an issue you can reach out to them through multiple channels like social media or the intercom system inside the train car. reporting, jovina fortson, abc 7 news. it is something abc 7 has focused on to build a better bay area. the agency has announced its fleet of the future will be built in pittsburgh. lombardier transportation plans to begin assembling rail cars this summer. at least 50 people get hired at first. the mayor of pittsburgh hopes those jobs will improve the quality of life in his city.

>> there is a jobs housing imbalance here in east county. we really need to create more jobs here in pittsburgh so people can live, work and play here locally. >> more than 700 new cars will replace bart's original fleet. and say good-bye to the bart ticket. the agency says it plans to phase out the paper ticket by the end of the year. it's pushing all riders towards using clipper cards. last year, bart added a 50-cent per-trip fee for all trips using paper tickets. >> abc news devoted an entire week to covering bart. you can see all those stories on abc 7 news.com. >> time now is 8:06. a work shop to help job seekers hone their skills. they're holding a job readiness work shop to teach applicants how to apply for one of their jobs. the center is holding a job fair next weekend to hire ticket takers, ushers, custodians, security and a variety of other

positions. chase center is expected to employ nearly 2500 people. today's work shop starts at 9:30 a.m. at the bay view hunter's point ymca in san francisco. in the south bay, santa clara county is holding its first-ever transgender job fair. transgender workers report twice the rate of unemployment as other americans and nearly half are under employed. the job fair begins at noon at the uneconomity center commun people who are transgender can drop off resume and get tips for applying to county jobs. the toronto raptors say they're cooperating with the alameda county sheriff's office regarding a misdemeanor battery complaint against the gm. masai ujiri is accused of pushing a deputy after trying to get on the court after the championship win. show his credential.

>> city officials are hoping to build a 45-bed homeless navigation center by 2020. a dozen sites are under consideration including this vacant lot owned by niles discovery church. 3,000 people have signed a petition against this specific location. >> this is from the city services, that the homeless people need and deserve. this is also at a very busy intersection right next to a busy train track. >> church leaders who are supportive of the project were unavailable for comment. city council members will hold a study session next week to establish criteria which city staff will then use to narrow down the search. nearly 500 homeless people were counted city wide in 2017. the total will likely go up when new numbers are released this summer. we'll need to build more affordable housing and that will take a while to come on-line and in the interim, we've got to start getting people off the street back into stable, permanent living situations.

>> most neighbors want to help the homeless in some form, but say they also deserve a say in the process. >> what would people who need a lot of help and follow up. how are they going to track them and lou long are tray going to track them? that is a tragedy. the center will be built with funds allocated by the state and operate for five years. the city hopes to choose a final location by september. time now 8:10. on the peninsula, the ritz carlton hotel and half moon bay has agreed to pay a seven-figure fine that it denied the public access to a nearby beach. beach goers have complained for years that the ritz carlton staff had been turned away from the public. you can see the resort that's on the map the $1.6 million fine was the second largest ever levied by california's coastal commission. san francisco was one step closer to being able to charge tourists on the crooked part of lombard street. a state senate committee would impose the fee.

give it a leg up and then posed for a picture. the cat now has a new home because the family living in the house has decided to keep it. speaking of felines, the battle brews on against a small coffee shop and a construction giant. it's all over the name cat. abc 7 news anchor dion lim has the story from santa cruz where some other prominent names are now getting involved. >> when you walk into our little quaint shop here i'm pretty sure you're not going to mistake the equipment with the cafe. >> drew co-owner of cat & kof ney santa cruz has been in a state of disbelief since last august when their shop was slapped with a legal petition to cancel the trademark by caterpillar. >> we feel like we're being bullied. >> cat & cloud is among 174 registered trademarks including the word cat. caterpillar has filed 125 cancellations petitions so far including -- ♪ ♪ internet sensation keyboard cat.

the fog is back and there are delays at sfo. meteorologist lisa argen is tracking the forecast. >> hi, chris. hour delays at sfo, you're right about that and fog is beginning to burn off the delta and vacaville and sunshine earlier and boy, we had those gusty delta winds and it is breezy around the bay. temperatures shy of average, but mother nature making a nice picture here with the clouds framing walnut creek and looking at 53 and san francisco and morgan hill and half moon bay and sfo looking at the clouds later on today. 60s ask low 70s at 4:00 or 5:00 there on the peninsula. 58 in concord. livermore is at 56. napa, 55, mist and drizzle as well and it's been similar to yesterday morning and here are the breezy winds in the east bay and gusts up to 20 miles an hour for our friends in the east bay and the delta breeze and those

healthy, onshore winds allowing for the cooldown in the valleys. upper 50s right now and plenty of sunshine today and upper 70s and it will be a beautiful day in the mountains with the low clouds and fog burning back to the shoreline here with the mild day inland and cool at the coast and a lot of clouds there, and father's day will trend warmer especially inland and slightly around the bay. here's the plan as we go through 9:00, notice we still have fog across the bay and then it's sunshine and it's breezy and cool. the clouds stacked up from marin county down through pacifica and then another early push inland, looking at more sunshine for father's day and high pressure begins to build in by late tomorrow and that's going to bring a slight warm up midweek and so we're looking at monday's temperatures in the 90s inland and 70s around the bay and little change on tuesday and nudging up a tad close to the ocean. otherwise it's mainly an inland event and by wednesday it's a

preview of summer and of course, the summer solstice is friday morning and this is pretty much where it should be with 60s, 70s and 80s across the bay as we go into the middle of june. ocean beach, half moon bay and those winds up to 20 miles an hour and lots of clouds in the south bay and milpitas 74 so certainly cool for mid-june. 71 milbrae, a lot of clouds for the richmond, daly city 62 and we're 75 for you in sonoma and east bay on the cool side and it will take to 4:00, 5:00 to reach the mid-60s in hayward and head inland and san ramon is at 74 and concord 77 and those 80s out by the delta. the accuweather seven-day forecast at the coast, about 60 and 70 around the bay and 80s inland and warmer for father's day and the warming trend looks more aggressive than i want to

in the east bay making for a nice picture and this is walnut creek where you can see no sun out there with temperatures in the 50s. 53 san francisco. we have mist in oakland and it's breezy over the east bay hills and 55 in morgan hill and as we look at the golden gate bridge, and it will be mild and cool at the coast and numbers below average and we're in the low 50s with santa rosa with 56 in liver more and the plan today will be for the coastal clouds to hang on a bit through the mid-morning hours and we're in the upper 50s to low 60s in the next hour or so and notice those clouds are back and we'll take throughout the 4:00 and 5:00 hour and more fog tonight. chris? >> thank you. now to president trump gearing up for his re-election bed by taking aim with vice president joe biden and insisting he's ahead in the polls. rachel scott has new details and

deadly shooting inside a costco store in southern california. one person is dead and three others injured including an off-duty police officer. witnesses say they heard an argument before shots rang out. that caused a panic as shoppers tried to take cover. this happened last night in corona, in riverside county and police say the gunman is in custody. in the south bay, community groups are putting more pressure on google to build affordable housing in san jose. they rallied this week to demand google build thousands of homes in the area where the company plans to build a massive campus. the demand stems from a new report by a labor-backed organization. working partnerships usa says the company us could lead to $235 million in rent spikes. city officials dispute the numbers. >> happening today, the juneteenth festival in san francisco, juneteenth is the oldest celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the u.s. today's festival will be on

it may be hard to do with the mist and drizzle and here's pier 39. you can see the cloud cover and it's a little wet out there and temperatures are in the low 50s in the city to 60 in mountain view and 54 morgan view and half moon bay, visibility, and an interesting picture from san jose. you can see the hills and the gray skies and the cooldown has reached everyone even towards the delta. we had those howling winds and cloudy skies and early on and sun is making its way westward. 54 petaluma and most of the cities well below normal today and the surface winds, pretty gusty in the delta up to 50 miles an hour in concord and we'll remain on the breezy side over the hills and temperatures lucky to reach 80 degrees over by the delta, as we look at the low clouds and fog and this will be a permanent feature for the next several days right along the coast, but as we get through the early morning hours
