>> reporter: this is a frightening example of why officials are asking people not to use fireworks at all. they are illegal here. let's show you where the fire started this afternoon just after 2:00. we are showing you this community park across the street from where i'm standing. witnesses told us there were several men in the park shooting off fireworks. one witness said he actually saw the sparks fly across the street and then start this grassy field to my left on fire. this was all dry grass. the witnesses told us that within seconds the entire field was on fire, started burning down the fence lines here, and began setting some of the trees and the fences and the things that people have in their back yards on fire. at that point, we talked to some neighbors, a father and a son, who told us they heard first the pops of those fireworks, then screaming. then they came outside to see exactly what was going on. >> well, i ran over to the

houses over here and knocked on their windows and doors and hopped their fence and couldn't get in the back yard and grabbed the garden hose and started putting out -- the fence was on fire so i put it out and sprayed down the bushes. >> what would you tell people who might want to use fireworks in contra costa county? >> i think they're stupid especially in california to do that. especially in the summer time. you shouldn't do that. >> reporter: we're back live here. you can see we're showing you some of the trees swirling. there are swirling winds at this point, eric and dion. it is not particularly hot but it is the wind that could help get a fire out of control rather quickly. fire officials are asking people to be very cognizant of the fact that the hot weather last week dried out all this brush. there are plenty of fuels and even if it is not hot like it isn't today, only about 70 degrees out here, these winds

full accu weather forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you very much. activists gather across the bay area today calling for president trump to be impeached. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has our story live from the north bay. cornell? >> yeah. in fact, eric, more than a hundred rallies were held across the country today. bay area gatherings were small in size but pretty vocal. all this while support for impeachment remains divided. as san jose city hall this group joined others across the country calling for the impeachment of donald trump. >> we need to hold him accountable. he is not above the law. >> reporter: in san rafael this group held signs on 4th street with the same message. >> democracy is at stake. >> what do we want? >> impeachment! >> when do we want it? >> now! >> this group of 50 activists rallied near the federal building in oakland. >> those lies materially impaired the investigation of russian interference. >> some took turns reading from

the mueller report investigating russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. >> we are calling on our congressional leaders to up and be real leaders and sign the document to remove donald trump. >> house speaker nancy pelosi is backing off from impeachment saying the effort is not even close to having support in the house. >> she may not want to pursue it but that is why we elected a congress, to represent us. >> i think the democrats are beating a dead horse. >> jason clark chairman of san francisco's republican party, believes impeachment is a losing venture. >> it's been going on for three years. we found no russia collusion, no real evidence of a crime that the president has committed. so there is really not a lot of grounds for impeachment. >> some activists disagree and say they will keep holding rallies and urging lawmakers to take action on impeachment. in san rafael, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> thank you very much. these protests were

organized online in an effort to push congress to take action. a decent sized crowd showed up for the impeachment protest in new york city. there were a few counterprotesters as well who showed their support for president trump. president trump is set to officially kick off his re-election campaign next week. >> democratic candidates have been stomping in battleground states. abc news reporter rachel scott has more from the white house. >> reporter: president trump on the move at the white house saturday morning and doubling down on his insistence that he is the clear front-runner in the 2020 presidential race tweeting we are doing great in the polls, even better than in 201presiden expressed in an exclusive interview with abc's george stephanopoulos. >> i just had a meeting with a pollster and i'm winning everywhere. >> reporter: but an internal poll from his own campaign earlier this spring paints a different picture. the march data obtained by abc news had the president losing to biden by double digits in

pennsylvania and wisconsin and in florida where the president will kick off his re-election campaign in a few days biden led by seven points. the campaign telling us since then there has been a big upswing in trump's favor. in the abc news interview the president continued his attacks on biden, who is an early front-runner. >> he wanted to be the tough guy. he is not a tough guy. >> reporter: the crowded field of democratic presidential candidates out on the campaign trail saturday unleashing on mr. trump. >> donald trump. who has vilified immigrants from day one. >> we have a president in the white house who has had an all out assault on women's reproductive freedom. >> reporter: as democrats gear up for the first presidential debate later this month it remains to be seen if and when they'll turn their attention to their party rivals. rachel scott, abc news, the white house. two men from the bay area are under arrest after a police chase and crash in modesto that killed two people. police say they tried to pull

over the driver of the stolen car early this morning but he took off. police say shots were fired at officers from the suspect's car. the car then jumped a curb and crashed near a taco truck and two bystanders were killed. police say the suspects ran but were quickly arrested. late this afternoon police released their mug shots. you see them here. 22-year-old antonio gazzo of daly city and 24-year-old rodney quiros of san francisco have been booked on charges including homicide and attempted homicide. meantime a united airlines jet skidded to a stop after some of its tires blew out while landing in newark, new jersey. flight 627 from denver ended up along the edge of a runway at newark liberty international airport. today's mishap forced one of united's biggest hubs to close for a short time. newark airport has reopened but delays do continue. united says some of its 166 passengers suffered minor injuries but they refused medical attention.

a family in arizona has

taken the first steps in suing phoenix police over a confrontation captured on video that has sparke outrage. >> witnesses recorded what happened when police restrained ames outside a store. an officer pushed ames into a patrol car and kicked him. a second officer pointed his gun at ames' car when the man's pregnant wife and their two daughters stepped out. the ames family says the incident started when one of the girls was accused of shoplifting a doll from a dollar store. >> me and my daughters will never be the same anymore or feel the same about the police department. >> i assure you this incident is not representative of the majority of phoenix police officers who serve this city. >> the ames family has filed a $10 million claim against phoenix police. a glitch at target today stalled checkout lines at stores across the globe. shoppers were not happy this day before father's day. abc 7 news was in san jose at westgate central where a two-hour outage prevented

cashiers from scanning merchandise or processing transactions. self-checkout registers were also affected. >> we stood around and waited. i probably waited 30 minutes before i put my things away. a lot of people were still standing. some had put their things away and just left. >> target is my go to store, but they let me down this yeah. they're back up and running so we're on our way now. >> target temporarily closed some of its stores including one in san francisco. the retailer said the issue was not a data breach or security related. hundreds of people enjoyed a san francisco tradition today. >> the north beach festival. what to expect if you check it out tomorrow.

in the north bay firefighters and business owners cleaned up the mess caused by a broken water main in sausalito. the water flooded about 20,000 square feet inside at least ten businesses. today's troubles started when a 12-inch main burst beneath a bridgeway near coloma street. you can see traffic had to be diverted around the sinkhole caused by the broken main. circus performers were among the many things to see at the 65th annual north beach festival in san francisco. several streets are closed near columbus avenue and grant street. the festival also happens tomorrow from 10:00 until 6:00. >> as we can see in the video a little gray, a little dreary. more seasonal. >> let's find out more from drew tuma. the fog is keeping temperatures close to where they should be this time of the year. no extreme heat to start out the weekend but a fair amount of cloud cover close to the coast. live doppler 7 along the satellite showing you a lot of clouds. we'll zoom in over san
