i'm cornell barnard. a concord high school football player a hero tonight. he jumped in to save victims from a car accident. i'm luz pena in the news with the story of a family that was duped out of $10,000 by a fake landlord. we'll tell you how you can help. i'm kate larsen in san francisco. from curtains to cushions. how a tech startup is helping build a more beautiful bay area for homeless women and children. abc 7 news starts right now. >> announcer: now from abc 7 live breaking news. and that breaking news is in union city. an explosion sends two people to the hospital. >> it was reported just after 8:00 p.m. tonight at a home on elizabeth way. abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo is there live for us with the very latest. amanda. >> reporter: dion and dan, i spoke with neighbors off camera who said the explosion was so powerful it knocked down shelves

from their walls. they say that power was met with a plea for help. someone outside screaming "help, help." that happened just after 8:00 tonight, as you mentioned here along elizabeth way. according to the union city police, they say that two people were injured, one was taken to kaiser in fremont. the second was taken to a burn center in san jose. but because of the possibility of exposure to hazardous material hospitals had to follow special protocol. they also tell me the hazmat situation has been ruled out. investigators from both alameda county fire and union city police are still look into the cause. windows and doors were blown out in the explosion. we're told there was no fire. union city pic it's possible someone brought in some sort of leaking canister or tank into the house which then ignited. we can tell you right now thns a opcriminal invesing to connect

the public information officer with the alameda county fire department in just a moment, and we'll have more information to you as we follow these breaking developments from union city. amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. >> i was just praying everyone was safe, no one was severely injured. an east bay teen is being called a hero tonight after he witnessed a terrible car accident then bravely jumped in to rescue the victims. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard joins us live in concord with the incredible story you'll see only on abc 7. what a young man, cornell. >> reporter: that's right, dion. what a story. rayshawn jackson plays football here at clayton valley charter high. he doesn't consider himself a hero for what he did over the weekend. but you know, everyone else rayshawn jackson spent saturday running drills at football camp in sacramento. the 17-year-old plays varsity wide receiver at clayton valley charter high in concord.

but on the way back to pittsburgh rayshawn and his mom tracy saw an suv driving out of control on highway 160 in the delta. >> it was coming towards us but the person had turned their car, the steering wheel toward the sxriet that's when they flew off the edge of the cliff 37. >> reporter: tracy pulled over and seconds later rayshawn jumped into action to rescue those traps inside the suv which had flipped twice down an embankment. >> i was just praying that everyone was safe no, one was severely injured and make sure no one was dead. >> reporter: that's rayshawn on top of the suv pulling folks to safety. >> i'm look at rayshawn but i'm looking at the car like is the gas tank going to explode? it's fooch glass. he could get cut. i don't want him to hurt himself. >> i got on top of the driver door and opened it and let the driver out and then the passenger out. >> reporter: rayshawn and his mom helped the injured driver until paramedics arrived. >> did they thank you? >> yeah, they thanks us. >> reporter: i expect nothing less from him. >> reporter: clayton valley's football coach tim murphy isn't surprised rayshawn was so brave.

>> he's one of those kids that's you just going to step up and be the guy. he's the definition of a man and the definition of a kid you want on your football person. >> reporter: rayshawn doesn't think of himself as a hero, but his mom sure does. >> he's the type of kid that likes to help people. he's always been that way. that's my boy. >> reporter: she is so proud. injuries to those crash victims were not considered to be life-threatening. rayshawn's going to be a senior next year. he would love to play college football and is already being scouted by several schools. we're live in concord. cornell barnard, abc 7 news. >> all right, cornell thanks. new details tonight on the concord man accuse of threatening to commit a mass shooting at a jewish temple and kill police officers. police arrested 23-year-old ross farka after receiving an fbi tip about threats being made in an online chat room. investigators say they found an illegal semi-automatic rifle, camouflage clothing and nazi literature in farka's home.

in the south bay san jose police have arrested 20-year-old leonard hall and 21-year-old kevin ta. both are suspected in a string of armed robberies. the most recent happened june 4th at the 7 6 gas station on north 1st street near the bayshore freeway. officers say hall robbed a customer and a cashier then fired several rounds at another customer who took off running. they say ta and his associate and co-conspirator. one of the two defendants in the ghost ship fire trial took the stand today and is expected to testify again tomorrow. max harris faces 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter. harris wore a suit and said his title of artistic director was more of a joke. prosecution witnesses have described him as holding a leadership role. harris says he scrubbed toilets and went through the tn exchange for being able to live in the warehouse. >> he's been in custody for two his instagram o tell his story.

and he never said anything about all the lives that were lost. >> the judge had an overflow room set up so families with a connection to the case could listen to the testimony. in the south bay there is growing debate in one san jose neighborhood over pride flags. residents in willow glen have long used brightly colored flags for safety while crossing busy lincoln avenue. rainbow flags were introduced for pride month but not everyone was a fan. >> i put them out on june 1st. they were gone by the 2nd. and then someone else put them out a couple days later, and then those were gone. and then the christian flags came out. >> christian flags like this one put in place of the removed pride flags which many feel like wa not p back the pride flags while others say the flags should be used for safety, not to make a statement. the lgbtq pride flag is flying over the california state capital for the first time ever.

it's being done in honor of pride month. the flag was raised at the request of governor gavin newsom and will fly until july 1st. newsom says it sends a message of inclusion that he believes exists in california. abc 7 news is dedicated to telling stories about people and places in our community who are building a better bay area. >> absolutely. and abc 7 news reporter kate larsen has the story of how a tech company and a shelter came toether to improve the lives of homeless women and children in san francisco. >> it's floral with blues -- >> reporter: an online interior design startup headquartered in san francisco. in march she and a team of 40 set off to transform a community home in one day. >> this is a women's shelter, a shelter for moms and their children, and we wanted them to feel special. >> reporter: now kids living at the richmond district shelter are enjoying their colorful new playroom, chic community dining space, and luxurious mother's corner. >> i like the windows and everything. >> reporter: kabob johanns has

been living at the home with his mom and younger brother for two years. his mother ruda iyasu came to the u.s. through eritrea through political asylum but she and her boys ended up homeless in san francisco until catholic charities found them a spot at star. >> they helped me with everything. >> reporter: since they opened seven years ago star community homes has housed more than 1100 women and children. 15 families can stay here at a time and on average they stay for six months. and 90% of star families leave because they found stable housing. ruda and her children just secured housing in san francisco. >> i'm so happy. >> reporter: program director lucia lopez has noticed that other star families have been happy too. ever since the mazi makeover. >> for some reason this new transformation helped the families to be a little bit more nicer to each other. >> reporter: mazi says they hope to spread the love to more spaces in need. >> design can be life-chnging. >> reporter: in san francisco kate larsen, abc 7 news.

[ screams ] this is scary. violent turbulence on board a bulgarian flight from kosovo to switzerland left ten people injured yesterday. passengers' heads slammed into the 737's ceiling, as well as a flight attendant's beverage cart that scalded some people with hot water. the passenger who recorded this video told swiss media she was convinced the plane was going to crash. >> scary. well, on the peninsula three kids are spending their summer break in their van after their parents were duped out of $10,000. >> now, they thought they were renting a house in south san francisco, but three days after moving in they were evicted by the actual landlord. >> it's one of the top viewed stories on our website. and here's abc 7 news reporter

luz pena with a story you only on abc 7 news. >> reporter: this is the gonzalezes' new home. their van. this is where you sleep now. >> yeah. >> has it been hard? >> yeah. >> why? >> because it's uncomfortable. >> reporter: parked right outside the house where they lived for a total of three days. 11-year-old elizabeth remembers waking up to someone at the door telling her mom they had to move out. >> when that man came knocking on your door saying you guys needed to leave, what did you think? >> that we were going to be living in the streets. i was scared. >> reporter: that landlord she describes is the legitimate landlord for the property. victor gonzalez had already paid someone else to move in and to change the locks. >> he asking for the first month, for the last month, and deposit, at least like 10,000. >> reporter: south san francisco police confirmed the gonzalezes were duped. >> they found a cloned ad online

that solicited that property that was for rent. it was legitimately for rent from a real estate company. however, somebody was falsely representing themselves as the property owner. >> reporter: joel from consumer action says the gonzalezes are past the time they could get their money back. he explains paying with cash or transferring money are major red flags along with cost. >> way below market rents. that's a red flag. another one is an absentee landlord that can't meet with you. >> reporter: we found the same property in a legitimate posting on zillow and showed it to victor gonzalez. this was his reaction. >> are these the same pictures? >> yeah. yeah. it's the same. they didn't change anything. >> reporter: the pictures are the same. but the price over $1,000 more compared to the facebook marketplace post where they initially saw the property. for how much? >> 3,500. >> so this one is posted for -- on zillow for $3,995. >> yeah.

profits have started to drop because of the rising costs of doing business and living in the bay area. wild weather has been rolling through the sierra. this video was taken sunday afternoon as a hailstorm hits a pass. just yesterday there were more storms today and here's abc 7 news meteorologist sandhya patel. >> they had quite a few thunderstorms this afternoon in the sierra, dan and dion. let's take a look at a time lapse from our mount tamalpais camera. locally nothing like that. it's the real quiet picture. the marine layer rolling in from our mount tam cam. you can see salesforce tower way in the background there. the fog layers about 1400 feet deep tonight, but it did not interfere with this. look at this view from our kgo roof camera. it's a stunning view of the waning gibbous. as that moon was rising we had a nice view of it tonight, and if you had a chance to check it out you'd know exactly what i'm talking about.

now, tomorrow if you are going to the a's game against the orioles the weather could not be better. a lot like today. we're going to be seeing temperatures right around the upper 60s at around first pitch. 7:07. the temperature will be dropping inthe mid 60s and then sliding down to the low 60s. but overall that weather is going to be fantastic. pretty clear skies to start off when that game gets under way. if you're going, you need the shades and the sunscreen. here's a live picture of the fog over san francisco. you can see it is right over city hall and parts of salesforce tower. live doppler 7 showing you that fog hugging the coast. it has pushed into parts of the north and the east bay tonight. so temperatures at this hour anywhere from the 50s to the 60s unless you get above the inversion layer. in clearlake, ukiah, you're in the 70s tonight. exploratorium camera, this pretty much shows what you you'll have to deal with during the commute. foggy areas during that commute time mild to warm the next few days and cooler than average on thursday. here's the look at your 12-hour planner. when you get out the door, temperatures will be in the 50s. watch out for a little bit of
