life savings for a rent house. >> the story paid off. by tuesday, the family's go fund me account raised more than the money they lost. now luz is working to track down who this fake landlord is. >> she joins us live on a story you'll only see on abc news. >> reporter: ama and dan, we met up with victor gonzalez again but he led us to a property he found and this time they are trying to strike again. here is what happened. we met up with victor gonzalez outside of the second property he found on craigslist posted by the same alleged fake landlord that took the amount of $10,000. how did he know it was the same guy? the phone numbers were the same. >> this time around, what did the fake landlord tell you? >> he's the property owner and he leave the key because he's the owner. >> reporter: this time victor wasn't going to fall for the

scam again. instead, they texted back askan forth and the landlord got him a code to the lock box. >> but he don't know it was me. >> reporter: we're driving to meet up with the actual property management company that is renting that property that victor checked out. did you know this? >> i didn't know that but i'm not surprised. >> reporter: he says these scammers are sophisticated. >> i had my tech person trace ip addresses back to nigeria or north africa or turkey and it's just not much we can do. >> reporter: he water marks every photo and uses a remote access system where anyone who wants to see a property needs to sign up and even take a selfie so do the scammers do this? >> it will verify you're registered and give you a code to open the box and get the key. >> reporter: do you have that person's information in your system? >> of course we do. >> reporter: can we check it out? >> i can't give it to you but if

we are contacted by the police, obviously we would cooperate with that. >> reporter: we texted the alleged landlord and he' repli. he said yes, it's still available for rent. when are you looking to move in? how can you protect yourself? so before you give any money to a landlord, look them up on the california department of real estate website. you type in their name and it will tell you if they are who they say they are. going back to the gonzalez, they say they are grateful for you, bay area. they raised over $16,000 and last night slept in a comfortable bed because of you and you have been messages me throughout the weekend. you want to know more about the gonzalez and what to do. let me tell you what he said today. he says that spirit of generosity affected them so much and give so much money to the hospital.

better bay area. yesterday google announced a billion-dollar commitment to create housing. some of you were skeptical so today we followed up. chris nguyen is live with a better understanding of the plan, chris? >> reporter: dan, good evening. the plan will help in terms of building homes in the immediate future but it could come at a cost to cities in the long run. an act of defiance for the biggest companies. they gathered to protest outside the annual alphabet shareholders meeting. >> we've seen time and time again google continues to put profits over people. >> reporter: this comes after google announced a $1 billion housing investment plan that brings praise but met with skepticism from some of you on the abc 7 facebook page. >> google shouldn't portray this as something they are doing out of the goodness of their heart

but the community spoke out. >> reporter: the $1 billion plan is broken down into two parts. they set aside $750 million worth of company owned land. the company's ceo estimates up to 15,000 homes could be built but the exact number is debatable because google hasn't provided specifics how the homes will be constructed. this portion of the contin jen contingent on local ma nice palties. >> those cities lose money with residential development. he is encouraged by the pledge but says cities in the south bay need to work together. >> if everyone is simply playing a game of protecting their own treasury, we won't get the housing build and that's what we seen historically in many smaller suburbs. >> reporter: google will establish a $250 million fund to provide developer incentives to build at least 5,000 affordable

housing units locally. >> they are sincere in their efforts. i don't think they understand the measure they really need to put forward to actually have effective change. >> reporter: the company hopes to start construction relatively soon and for the homes to be available in the next few years. we're live in the south bay tonight, chris nguyen, abc 7 news. >> interesting. chris has google actually talked with the cities involved in the ideas in specific ways? >> reporter: great question, dan. google has been successful in terms of rezoning in the north bay shore area. they are still in talks with n sunnyvale and san jose. >> chris, thanks a lot. the bay area is the most expensive place to rent a home in california. the fair market rent for a two bedroom apartment is over $2,000. it's just under $3,000 in santa clara county and over $3,000 in san francisco. you can rent a two-bedroom place

in new york, chicago, los angeles or honolulu for less. it came for a report for the low income housing coalition that shows how hard it is to afford a place here. wayne freedman joins us with real life perspective. >> reporter: real life, in some cases we're not even talking about apartments, we're talking about rooms. we're here watching people take their commuter trips home away from the city. we're also talking to tourists today who said what a wonderful place to live. i'd like to live here myself to which we said don't be so careful about what you wish for. san francisco land of dreams of landlords and tenants with stories to tell. >> yeah, there is one person that built a loft in a closet. >> in your place? >> yes. >> what do they pay for rent? >> $1200. >> i pay $1800 a month and i live in the dining room. >> reporter: what's with that?

in the east bay, firefighters are tackling a grass fire burning that broke out about 5:00 burning near the hayward regional shoreline. they made walleter dumps on the flames. the blaze burned about two acres. there was so much smoke they could see it for hours. they fueled concerns about what was going on. to the north bay, today san ra raphael police released body cam video. officers spent 30 minutes trying to talk to the suspect with a knife in one hand and a pair of

sheers in another he refused to put down. eventually he began approaching the officers. they gave him commands and shot him with bean bag rounds and sprinted towards the officers and that's when that shooting that you heard started happening. he survived and pleaded guilty to several charges. he was sentenced to more than three years in prison. >> three different times cars on the freeway have been hit by gunfire. two happened on 680. all happened in the past pew fe days. eric thomas is live with more on what the highway patrol is saying about the investigation, eric? >> reporter: dan, the first thing they are saying is they would like help from the public in identifying a suspect in each one of these three shootings. the other thing they are saying about the investigation is they don't believe these shootings are related to one another. >> at this time, we don't have any information to suggest there is a threat to the general

public. >> reporter: chance litranslati random shooter on southbound 680 in san jose when someone opened fire at about 8:30 last night. >> passed through two windows and where that went after that is not appearing to be a round that remained in that vehicle. >> reporter: the bullet didn't hit anyone but a 12-year-old girl in the passenger seat was cut by flying glass. the driver told investigators that a white car pulled up beside her and she saw the driver holding a gun. two hours later at highway 85 and highway 17, a driver said he had been tailgated by a gold car when he heard a thud. later when he got home, he found a bullet hole. he was not injured. chp says the shootings don't appear to be related but both may be cases of road rage. >> what we see is one party peepee feels like they may have been wrong and the other party may not have been aware of an

insurance de incident. >> reporter: a 30-year-old was shot and killed at 680. his car was found in the highway median. the highway patrol is looking for suspects in each incident and asking for the public's help and have advice if you're beiii men niced on the road. >> create distance, call 911. report the information to us and let us deal with them. >> reporter: i asked the highway patrol if there were plans on changing patrol patterns on officers or putting more officers on the freeway in the wake of the shootings and the answer i got back is not at this point. they believe these are atypical enough that they don't need to add any staff or change the way they patrol at this point. eric thomas, abc 7 news. >> interesting. thank you so much, eric. on the peninsula, detectives have a murder mystery to solve. two victims in two days.

each victim suffered multiple stab wounds along skyline boulevard within more than a mile of each other. we are joined live and there is a suspect in custody? >> reporter: that's correct. one suspect was arrested this morning. investigators are trying to determine if he's linked to both stabbings. skyline boulevard in rural san mateo county was blocked off for a second day following an investigation into a second fatal stabbing. on tuesday night, sheriff's deputies were searching for evidence into the first fatal stabbing when they found another stab victim, 31-year-old john pekipaki screaming for help. deputies saw a man drive a car towards them they believe was the suspect. >> a deputy fired at the oncoming vehicle driving towards the vehicle and both deputies. the suspect was not hit by gunfire but the vehicle went off the road way into a ditch. >> the suspect has been identified as 26-year-old of

pacificia. >> noticed he was being weird, just wouldn't say nothing and he's just to himself. >> reporter: jeremy who didn't want to show his face on camera grew up with him. he said the victim's family is good people. >> he walked by our house and stand in our driveway and stair at us for a couple seconds. >> reporter: the first stabbing victim is 32-year-old is a yemen immigrant. his family met with the honorary counsel. >> the wife is crying and she is asking for the death penalty. >> reporter: he was a taxi driver and he could have been one of the clients but the family still doesn't know how the two men ended up in a secluded part of san mateo county. >> maybe he dropped the customer. we are waiting for the investigation from the district attorney and from the sheriff

department. >> reporter: now, the victim was treated for an injury to the arm. once he's cleared he will be booked into san mateo jail. >> okay. thanks very much. all right. we have our weather to talk about and some changing temperatures. >> yeah, spencer christian is tracking it for us. not too bad spencer. >> nice mild to warm day today but temperatures are dropping now. it will continue dropping tomorrow. here is a live look. fog at the coast and beyond i should say. it's getting pretty cool out there. notice the 24-hour temperature change most bay area locations are several degrees cooler than this time yesterday. the exception is san francisco. actually two exceptions half moon bay as well a couple degrees warmer than this time yesterday. here is why we have the cooling effect. you see advancing low clouds and fog. 51 in san francisco and 70

mountain view and san jose 72. here is another view of the fog from mount tam. it's 69 in santa rosa and 70 napa and 77 at concord and livermore and you can see the fog hovering over the goddlden gate, low clouds, fog, drizzle mainly near the coast. cooler and breezier and summer arrives on friday and will bring a warming trend that will continue through the weekend. we're looking at rather breezy conditions. we have gusts 20 miles per hour at mountain view and 24 livermore and 28 fairfield and everywhere else is breezy with the surface winds of about 15 to 20, 25 miles per hour. overnight look for more fog and low clouds pushing farther across the bay inland than i showed you. overnight lows in the low to mid 50s and a chance of spotty drizzle near the coastline as this marine layer is misty. tomorrow's highs will range from

low 60s to the costa low and mid 70s around the bay shoreline and although some of the warmest spots will top out at 80 or above. on friday it gets warmer as summer arrives. the solstice occurs at 8:54 and we'll see high temperatures inland friday and upper 80s in some spots, mid to upper 70s around the bay shoreline. hot inland saturday with many locations topping out at 94, 95, 96. we'll have the same picture sunday. mild at the coast. mild to warm around the bay shoreline and hot inland and then we'll see temperatures beginning to moderate a bit next week. here is the accuweather seven-day forecast breezy and cooler tomorrow than today. summer solstice on friday and the warming begins. it will warm up rather sharply inland on saturday and sunday. once again highs in the mid-90s. little change on monday but cooling begins more forcefully on tuesday and wednesday as temperatures drop back into a

music lovers. >> this week is the first time the jury heard directly from one of those defendants max harris and abc 7 news reporter laura anthony was in court today for his cross-examination. >> in a contentious cross-examination, alameda county prosecutor audry james tried to get max harris to admit he was calling many of the shots at the warehouse. harris has admitted calling himself the executive director of the artist collective but said that was more of a joke. asked about december 2nd, 2016 james grilled harris why he didn't point out the building's exits to arriving concert goers. he said i did not feel the compulsion to point out the stars in the first ten feet of the building. all but one unable to get out in time from the second floor. here are their faces. >> he lies constantly. >> reporter: among those watching harris' testimony, family and friends of the

many spots are reserved for people with permits and the wait list for permits can take years. now carpool drivers can go on to the bart app, touch parking and carpool. after a few more taps and entering clipper card numbers, the driver pays $3 for the parking spot. this is in effect on a trial basis at orinda, antioch and more. >> it's good. i think the app can be more convenient. >> this carpool parking program will preplace permits ask the scoop to bart partnership. bart will host a town hall to address one of the passenger's biggest complaints, overcrowding. bart has a plan to increase the number of passengers that can travel through the trans bay two. bart will host the race for space town hall on twitter tomorrow between noon and 1:00

in the first 24 hours they raised $24.8 million which they say is a record and if it's accurate, it's more money than any democratic candidate raise the in the first quarter of 2019. trever alt, abc 7 news washington. the united states is no longer the top spot in the world for refugees. the greatest number of refugees last year resettled in canada that's according to the research center. it was the first time the u.s. didn't lead the world. canada resettled 28,000 people in 2018, that number for the u.s. was 23,000. this graphic shows a significant drop in the refugees coming to the u.s. in 2016 when it reached a peak of 93,000 people. it is due to a lower cap set by the trump administration. well, it's not just china and the u.s. engaged in a trade war with tariffs. >> india is involved in politics is affectig california's produce in the central valley.

do we stand with what improvements? >> michael finney is here with more. >> technology is making cars safer no doubt about it but less than half have forward collision warning and automatic braking is standard equipment. why isn't this life saving technology standard on every vehicle? did you know that nine out of every ten serious crashes are linked to driver error. forward collision warning and automatic emergecy braking are helping avoid them but these safety features only standard in 44% of 2019 model cars. consumer reports would like to see all cars have this life-saving technology. >> we think these technologies are so important they factor into the ratings. we'd like more vehicles to have the safety features as standard equipment and the rollout is slow. >> reporter: in consumer reports, the slow to market safety technology is all too common. take a look at seat belts.

consumer reports tested them in 1956 but it took more than ten years for the government to require them on all cars. and since 1960, more than 300,000 lives have been saved. even today, seat belt technology evolved. >> two parts of the seat belt are called the pretension and load limiter. the pretensioner pulls the belt tight during the crash so you don't fly forward and the limiter lets out a little slack as that's happening so that as you're flying into the seat belt, you don't get hurt by the belt. all this great technology isn't standard on all cars. we need to find ways to save lives. it shouldn't be a luxury option. >> so what's next for auto safety? cars talking to each other. the technology is called v to v or vehicle to vehicle and allows cars to communicate with each other and coordinate traffic

this past winter was a tough one on bees. a nationwide survey of beekeepers found 38% of honey bee colonies died this past winter. that's the highest reported yet and more than the loss. beekeepers think it's connected to mites that feed on bees, one-third of the human diet is tied to bee's pollination. american agricing impacted

here is a live look into the und inland areas, low to mid 50s and a pretty good chance of spotty drizzle near the coastline. look at the movement here on our forecast animation. you can see how far inland the fog will reach and a little green spot showing up there along the coastline indicates areas where it might very well get a little drizzle. so an we go to highs tomorrow by midday we'll see fog back to the coastline breezy at the coast with high temperatures there in the low 60s. we'll see low 70s, few mid 70s along the bay shoreline. high temperatures inland and upper 70s to low 80s. that's as warm as it will get tomorrow. on friday first day of summer, temperatures bounce back to upper 80s, upper 70s around the bay shoreline and the sharper warmup over the weakened with highs in the mid to upper 90s, low 80s, mid to upper 60s in the coast and gradual cooling next week with a sharper cool down by midweek next week. >> all right.
