toll plaza. metering lights not on yet. about 20 minutes to left. car pool lanes are open. we're starting to see a backup in the cash lanes. the eastbound side of the roadway, we've got a pothole reported eastbound 80 past the toll plaza on the other side of the roadway. i'm a little surprised by that. that area is pretty smooth. i believe that pavement is fairly new. we'll see if chp' lab rates. westbound 580 tracy to dublin in the yellow, 44 minutes. southbound 680 dublin to mission boulevard, 16 minutes. 101 to cupertino coming in at 15 minutes. a sacramento police officer is dead after a man with a rifle seriously wounded her. >> it was an agonizing situation. officers struggled to get to her after she fell. the man just kept firing. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield live in the news room with what we're learning including the officer's ties to

the east bay. >> she grew up in the east bay and those officers in sacramento, they couldn't get to her for 45 minutes because he was still firing his gun. it wasn't until they could get an armored vehicle into the area until they could get to her and rescue here. 27-year-old tara o'sullivan later died at the hospital. she had been helping a woman, a domestic violence victim m belo her home when she was shot. the call had come in as a disturbance between a man and a woman. police and the mayor announced o'sullivan's death after midnight saying there are no words to convey the depth of the sadness they feel. >> the captain shared she had a bubbly personality but was always willing to help. didn't know what she was doing all the time, but had that willingness to help. clearly that calling to be a police officer and those traits followed her to want to do this job. >> the gunman held police off for about eight hours until a negotiator convinced him to

surrender. th department's first death in the line of duty in 20 years. live in the news room, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you so much. 26-year-old officer tara o'sullivan was hired by the sacramento police department in january of 2018. she entered the police academy last july and graduated just in december. she was still in training and was scheduled to go out on her own in a couple weeks. tara was a child development major at sacramento state. breaking news, vta workers could be going on strike. >> overnight we learned workers rejected a final offer. jobina fortson live in san jose with what this means for commuters. jobina. >> reporter: good morning. yes, the union overwhelmingly rejected the offer from the vta. you can see the bus going by right here. some of these drivers may decide to go on strike, but they have to give 72 hours' notice before they decide to do that. voting wrapped up around 10:00

p.m. last night. we're getting new information as well as to the issues. the vta and union have been in talk since last august trying to finalize a new labor contract. they reached 37 tentative agreement but can't seem to work out wage increases and the vta push for union members to be able to make larger contributions toward their pensions. about 1300 so-called classic employees in the union currently pay 1.9% of their gross salary toward a 6% employee pension contribution. the vta pays the rest of that money. non-union employees and employees hired after 2016 pay the full employee contribution. if the vta -- if the union decides to go forward with this strike, this could be the vta's first ever bus driver strike. live in downtown san jose, jobina fortson, abc 7 news. it's 5:o 4. a vaccine bill up for discussion in sacramento is expected to

draw hundreds of anti vaksers to the capital. it would give oversight of doctors who grant more than five vaccination exemptions per year. schools with vaccination rates at less than 95%. lawmakers will take comments from the public today. in the north bay san rafael police are expected to give more details about a shooting involving an officer. the department released body camera video of the encounter last august. officers say they spent nearly 30 minutes trying to talk to the man who they say had a knife in one hand and a pair of shears in another which he refused to put down. when he approached the officers, they gave him commands and shot him with bean bag rounds. he then ran toward the officers, that's when they shot him with their guns. he survived and pleaded guilty to several charges. he was sentenced to more than three years in prison. in the east bay a family is filing a wrongful death lawsuit

against the pleasanton police department. jacob bauer died in police custody last night. officers used an electronic control device on him. the family is scheduled to announce their lawsuit at a press conference at 11:00 a.m. in oakland. new developments in the bay area family scammed out of their life savings. the gonzalez family spent $10,000 to rent a house only to find out they had fallen victim to a fraud. we first told you about them on monday. luz pena is looking to track down the landlord. >> we met up with victor gonzalez, posted by the same alleged fake landlord who duped him out of $10,000. how did he know it was the same guy? the phone numbers were the same. >> this time around, what did he tell you. >> that he was the property owner and he leave the key. >> reporter: this time victor wasn't going to fall for the

scam again. instead they texted back and forth. the alleged landlord even got him a code to the property's lock box. >> he don't know it's me. >> reporter: we're driving to meet up with the actual property management company that is renting that property that victor checked out. >> do you know this? >> i didn't know that but i'm not surprised. >> reporter: these scammers are sophisticated. >> i've had my tech person trace i.p. addresses all the way back to nigeria or somewhere in north africa or turkey. it's just not much we can do. >> reporter: now he watermarks every photo and uses a remote access system where anyone who wants to see a property needs to sign up and even take a selfie. did the scammers do this? >> it will verify you're registered and it will give you a code to open the box and get the key. >> reporter: we texted the alleged landlord and he replied. >> he texted me back and said yes, it's still available for rent. when are you looking to move in.

here are the seven things you need to know this morning. number one, breaking news, a sacramento police officer is dead after being shot by a gunman while responding to a domestic violence incident. the suspect was later taken into custody around 2:00 this morning after an eight-hour standoff. tara o'sullivan grew up in the east bay before graduating from sac state. she had just graduated from the police academy last december. number three, the santa clara valley transportation authority may face its first ever strike after the union rejected the contract offered by vta. that rejection means bus drivers could walk off the job, but they do have to give 72 hours' notice. tt town hal today starting at noon. to participate, follow them at

while trying to help a woman connected to the domestic violence call. abc 7's amy hollyfield live in the news room with more on what's been a long and heartbreaking night. >> the officer was helping a woman move belongings out of her home when she was shot. 26-year-old tara o'sullivan grew up in the east bay. she's described as having a bubbly personality and someone always willing to help. the mayor and police officers announced her death after midnight calling it a horrible night for sacramento. o'sullivan graduated sacramento state and was said to have big dreams and a big heart. >> she was in the first graduating class of a groundbreaking program at sacramento state, the law enforcement candidate scholars program, known as lex. the first of its kind in the nation. the program emphasizes the importance of inclusion and cultural competence for future law enforcement leaders of which tara undoubtedly would have

been. >> they say it took officers about 45 minutes to get to her after she had been shot because the man was still shooting. so it was a very dangerous and tense situation. it took until they could get an armored vehicle in there until they were able to rescue her. she later died at the hospital. officers say that man went ahead and held them in a standoff for eight hours. a negotiator finally convinced him to surrender. live in the news room, meeltd, abc 7 news. amy, thank you. it is such a shame. we sent out updates throughout the night including this push alert after the suspect was arrested. you can get the latest to your phone by downloading our abc 7 news app. this is the second time this year a sacramento area police officer has been killed in the line of duty. davis officer natalie corona was shot january. she was 22 years old.

she graduated from the sacramento police officer one year before officer sullivan. 5:34. on to developing news. s in san mateo county are investigating whether one man is responsible for two homicides in two days. the victims both found along skyline boulevard about a mile from one another. tuesday night san mateo county deputies were searching for additional evidence in the stabbing death of 32-year-old abdulmalek nasher of pacifica. just before midnight they heard someone calling for help and found 31-year-old john pekipaki suffering from stab wounds. he did not survive. similar to monday night's victim, his family says he also received a work call. they say he was working for a towing company. >> he got a call to go over to that area and pick up a when john drove over there on highway 35, that's when it happened, that's when they killed him. >> deputies arrested 26-year-old

malek disuki of pacifica. in the east bay a defendant in the ghost ship trial finished his testimony. in court yesterday max harris says the exits were clear on the night of the fire. he said he thought everyone was going to get out of the building. harris became emotional when he talked about his own escape and the eight friends he lost in the fire. 36 people died in the ghost shiv ship fire in 2016. tracking this breaking news. transit workers in the south bay could be walking off the job next week. the union for valley transit authority workers says an over welling majority of workers, vta and the amalgamated transit agency have been negotiating since last august to finalize the contract. the main sticking points are wage increases and the vta's desire for union members to contribute more to their pensions. if union is set to reveal more about the vote and possible strike later this morning.

"the examiner" reports the public works staff will maintain the toilet, clean it and make sure it's stocked with soap and hand towels. it will be open for 24 hours as part of a three-month pilot program. supervisor matt haney has promised to extend it at all public toilets in the future. pg&e says workers have uncovered about 1100 high priority safety risks, most of them involving transmission line and poles. of those issues pg&e says more than 97% have already been corrected. in the bay area, pg&e says it discovered problems with the transmission line running through golden gate recreation area. it's also pre placing part of a

transmission line in marin county. the ftc is reportedly investigating youtube for its handling of children's videos. "the washington post" says the government launched the investigation after complaints from consumer groups and privacy advocates. those groups claim youtube failed to protect kids who use the streaming video service and improperly collected data from them. it says the investigation is prompting people to speed up changes to the algorithm for kids. two bay area dads created a product they say is good for the brain and appeals to picky eaters. mark brooks and jonathan wolfson co-founded brainiacs. brooks says many infant formulas contain omega threes. once kids out grow formula, they need to get the fatty acid elsewhere. >> we found kids in america are getting about 20% of the only make ga three dha they need.
