i'm kate larson in sacramento, where a police officer was shot and killed on duty yesterday. tonight, her department granl wa -- graduated dozens was honored tonight as her department graduated a new plas of recruits.

>> the bay area native was shot and killed last night while responding to a domestic violence call in north sacramento. >> kate larson was at the ceremony and joins us live from sacramento. kate? >> reporter: the graduation ceremony took place here at the memorial auditorium in downtown sacramento. of course, it took on a completely new meaning, because it took place just 24 hours after officer o sullivan shot just three miles from here. 56 new hi graduated police officers, smiling, shaking hands with new uniforms and badges, proudly pinned on by family members. but those shiny new badges are koefred by a black band. these new recruits are thinking of their colleague, officer tara o'sullivan, shot and kill in the north sacramento on wednesday night. >> tarra is surely with us here

tonight. >> reporter: officer o'sullivan was 26 years old, originally from the bay area. six months ago, she graduated from this same academy. sacramento police chief daniel hahn told me he knew her well. >> i don't think there's a person on this earth that would say she wasn't a perfect police officer. >> reporter: officer tom is a new graduate who trained with officer o'sullivan. >> she communicate and think on her feet. >> reporter: his father still supports his son as he begins his career. >> he wants to make a commu difference. i told him just be safe. >> reporter: the chief told me he saw officer o'sullivan a week ago. he said that she showed up on her own and ranned uphill for five miles with the recruits, just to show her support,

because that's the kind of oficer that she was. live in sacramento, kate larson, "abc7 news." >> kate, thank you. and san jose's police chief took a moment to honor the officer today in welcoming new cadets at the police academy. >> they have a fallen officer right now. but you know what? they have to have officers going out on the street again today. their officers right now are taking the criminal element off the street again. why? because they're special. and because you are special. >> officer tarra o'sullivan graduated from college park high school in 2011. the school yearbook shows her posing with the school soccer team. after high school, she attended college classes before transferring to sacramento state. one neighbor told us she was a joy to be around and was shocked when she learned what hand. >> very outgoing, happy kid.

>> reporter: that's why thief people have come to deliver a message. >> i consider it a hateful symbol. it's not welcome in my community. >> reporter: most consider this a close knit community filled with diverse opinions and families. i tried speaking with steve johnson today, but he had little to say about his lawn display. earlier this month, he said this. >> it's a tibetan sign that's way back before swastikas were invented. >> reporter: are you tibeten? >> i could be. >> no matter his reason for mag it, there's a compelling case to take it down. >> reporter: more than 15,000 people have signed this petition, asking him to remove the swastika from his front yashd. the plan is for a mediator to sit down with johnson next month. teachers and the challenges they face have been one of our focuses in building a better bay

area. santa cruz is the least affordable city in the nation for educators. amanda del castillo takes a look at what's being done to address the issue. >> reporter: the city of santa cruz tops the list no city wants to lead. >> it's a bad number one, we're the least affordable place for educators to leave. >> reporter: casey carlson says the problem is lack of state funding made worse by the lack of affordable housing. >> it's harder to attract and maintain teachers when they can't get salary that's enough to pay the rent. >> reporter: mid career educa r educatoeducato educators earn a salary of about $63,000, meaning most must pay 2/3 of their income to pay for rent. >> a big income is to pay for rent. >> reporter: daniel bigham says he pays half of his paycheck to live next to school, but many have chosen to commute to cut

down costs. to assist, the santa cruz office of education teamed up in 2017. partnership with the san francisco based start-up gives teachers a shared investment on a down payment for a home. santa cruz city schools is currently working on a plan to put rental housing for teachers on district property. >> that might allow me to save up for a place of my own. >> reporter: the economic policy institute found in 2018 u.s. teachers earned 13% less than private sector workers with similar levels of education. rounds out the top three at least affordable places for teachers to live is san jose and san francisco. i'm amanda del castillo, "abc7 news." >> we spent an entire week digging into the issues teachers face all over the bay area. we looked at what it takes to find housing. all of our stories are in one place on our website, abc7news.com. search for building a better bay area teachers to find it. b.a.r.t. is getting a big check thanks to the federal

tomorrow afternoon, that's up. so let's look at a couple of cities and the temperature trend for tomorrow. tomorrow morning, concord, in the low 60s. lunchtime, take your food outside. it's going to be beautiful. low to upper seth. in the afternoon hours, this is when it will be a little warmer, but not too warm. redwood city, upper 70s, mid 80s around concord. a live look from our san jose camera. we are getting a great view of san jose. the shark tank, visibility is good. same thing from the exploratorium camera. summer starts tomorrow morning, sizzling inland this weekend, and it is turning cooler. so 5:00 a.m., patches of fog around the bay and also around the san francisco, san mateo coast. it clears out quickly tomorrow afternoon, allowing those temperatures to rise. tomorrow morning, they fall about the 50s for most of you. fog will be confined to just the

beaches and only parts of the bay. so it's not a widespread fog event. inland areas will be clear. today was cooler. you noticed it. we had a nice sea breeze, we're going up. 81 in san jose, not extreme heat. 81 in santa clara. 78 in redwood city. downtown san francisco, 69 degrees. still a little breezy there along the coast. 80 in san rafel. 74 in oakland. 76 in newark, 78 in fremont. inland areas will be warm. in a. 82 in pleasanton. the alameda county fair is going on, bright and sunny. a warm afternoon, low 80s, but not too hot. if you're going, sun screen and water. accuweather seven-day forecast. it heats up for the weekend. low 60s coast. cooler, much cooler next week. only in the upper 70s.
