janai. good morning, kenneth. both sides all week have reiterated they do not want to go to war, but when pressed about the possibility iran says they're ready while president trump says you'll find out. tensions with iran reaching new heights as president trump approved retaliatory air strikes against the islamic republic for shooting down a u.s. surveillance drone. >> iran made a mistake. >> reporter: but sources tell abc news the operation was under way when trump abruptly called it off. despite the reversal the president insists he's not being pressured into conflict. >> no, not at all. not at all, in fact, in many cases it's the opposite. >> reporter: this latest standoff adding to a week of hostilities between the two nations beginning with the u.s. accusing the islamic republic of attacking two oil tankers in the gulf of oman. iran denied conducting the attacks but did claim responsibility for shooting down the u.s. drone you can see in these images falling from the sky.

the country's ambassador to the u.n. telling npr we tried to caution the drone through radio transmission but then says, quote, since it was a spy drone, we were left with no other option. >> this was an unprovoked attack on a u.s. surveillance asset that had not violated iranian airspace. >> reporter: late thursday president trump summoned congressional leaders to the situation room for an emergency briefing on the situation where some members from both parties urged for caution. >> we're worried that he and his administration may bumble into a war. >> reporter: his closest allies are encouraging him to take aggressive action. >> the only way iran changes its behavior is if they believe america will put options on the table that would create pain for their regime. >> reporter: sources tell abc news the situation would have escalated quickly had the plan been carried out. officials feared that the attack could have caused hundreds of civilian casualties, janai and

kenneth. >> good thing it did. before you go, mona, do we know anything more about why the president changed his mind after ordering the strike? >> well, right now, janai, it's unclear why the president decided to last minute change his mind but we do know at least our sources are telling us that he did not so against the advice of his secretary of state, mike pompeo and his national security adviser john bolton. janai. >> so obviously disagreements within the administration about what should come next. mona, thank you for joining us this morning. also breaking overnight the faa has halted u.s. commercial air traffic over iran affecting flights over the persian gulf and gulf of oman because of safety concerns. the ban is in effect until further notice. earlier united airlines suspended flights between new york and mumbai, india, because they fly over that region. stay with abc news for the latest on the crisis in iran. we will bring you any new developments as soon as we get them on air and online. we turn to that navy s.e.a.l. on trial for murder

and a bombshell in court. a key witness came forward to claim that he killed the victim, not the defendant. abc's marci gonzalez has reaction from court including what the navy s.e.a.l.'s wife is now saying. >> reporter: a bombshell in decorated navy seal edward gallagher's war crimes trial, the platoon leader of an elite unit accused of killing this captured wounded isis fighter he was supposed to treat posing for photos with the teenager's body. special operator first class corey scott taking the stand thursday afternoon telling the court he saw gallagher take out his knife and stab the prisoner but then scott making a stunning claim saying that he killed the teen, not gallagher, claiming he plugged the president's airway because he believed he survived the stab wound only to later be tortured by iraqi forces. today the truth started to come out. what we've been saying for all this time, this is a shoddy investigation. >> reporter: the lead prosecutor caught off guard saying it's the first time he's heard this accusing scott who has immunity and cannot be charged with murder in this case of lying to

protect his fellow s.e.a.l. scott asked whether he thinks gallagher should go to jail replying, gallagher's got a wife and family. i don't think he should be spending his life in prison. gallagher's wife leaving court calling the testimony a relief but saying claims that her husband stabbed the prisoner are untrue. >> and my husband will be exonerated and his innocence will be known to everybody after way too long. >> how much more embarrassment is the navy going to take before they say enough? >> reporter: gallagher is also charged with attempted murder accused of shooting at civilians. he could face life in prison if convicted in this trial. marci gonzalez, abc news, los angeles. now to the campaign trail where former vice president joe biden is hoping to move beyond the controversy sparked by his remarks about working well with segregationist senators and met with members of the congressional black caucus some of whom say they are not bothered by his comments and called senator cory booker after pushing back when booker asked him to apologize. the senator said he explained to

biden why his language was problematic. >> i understood where his intentions were. i understood where his heart is. the fact it's not about me or him, he said things hurtful and harmful. i believe he should be apologizing to the american people and having this discussion. >> booker described the conversation as good and constructive and he said he felt better understood after the call. sacramento police are remembering an officer killed after less than one year on the force. tara o'sullivan was shot while responding to a domestic violence call. she was honored last night during police academy graduation ceremonies. the 26-year-old was considered family at a local university. >> this morning when i was trying to explain to my daughters why i was so upset about my student, the only thing i could think of to explain to them w his criminal record dates back

two decades. time now for a look at your weather for this friday morning. authorities issued mandatory evacuation orders for 250 homes east of phoenix where a wind-driven wildfire has burned nearly 80 square miles of brush. meanwhile in the east, this was the scene along the north carolina coast where storms churned up winds topping 50 miles an hour knocking down power lines. and we often hear about baseball-size hail. here is visual proof that a storm -- from a storm that hit western arkansas. today's temperatures, 90s across the south, lots of 70s and 80s on the first day of summer. just in time for summer coming up, the big news about the rolling stones. also ahead, the new questions about a study that claims teenagers are growing bone spurs in the back of their heads from looking down at their phones. the concern about racism in the ranks. what protesters are now manding

♪ it's time to rock out because the rolling stones are back. they're playing tonight in chicago for the first time since mick jagger's health scare forced them to postpone their tour. the 75-year-old has been busy rocking the dance floors just weeks after undergoing heart valve surgery. >> a lot will be excited to see him back on stage. philadelphia's police commissioner says 72 officers are off the street after a watch dock group claims they posted racist comments online. the police union says any disciplinary action is premature

but the commissioner says the department won't hesitate to take action. >> we will not be shy about meting out the appropriate discipline which could range from in many cases a day or so off all the way up to termination. it makes me sick to be honest with you. it really makes me sick because we are in a position to know better. >> the group known as the plain view project says it is also identified racist social media postings by individuals they claim are police officers in seven other u.s. cities. in st. louis 22 officers are under investigation. an unusual crash test in virginia, the faa dropped that plane out of the sky to collect data for research. the 33,000-pound jet was dropped at a nasa facility. they described the crash as severe but survivable. google is pushing back against a new report about fake businesses on google maps. "the wall street journal" found about 11 million falsely listed

businesses on any given day with hundreds of thousands more appearing every month. google says it took down 3 million fake profiles last year and is working on better ways to fight scams. >> listen up, parents. some scientists are slamming a study that claims cell phone use is causing bone spurs to grow in the back of teenagers' heads. an australian researchers says the horn-like growths are likely forming because teenagers are constantly tilting their heads forward to look at their phones. some have used the research to justify taking away their children's phones. but some scientists are upset with the study saying it wasn't thorough enough and say the bone growth could simply be genetic. >> interesting nonetheless. coming up, zion williamson's emotional reaction after getting picked first in the nba draft. but first a rare and vicious attack's beach. a young girl is bitten by a sea li. why the animals are becoming more aggressive. caught on camera, tsa officers under attack at the

we are back with a new jersey man accused of stabbing a woman and her 4-year-old grandson and then live streaming his getaway on facebook. >> with police sirens audible in the background, the man is heard saying, quote, cops on me, then seat belt off, i love y'all before he crashed into a pole. he is now in custody. now to the rare attack off the california coast. a teenager was standing in knee-deep water when a sea lion grabbed on to her leg. >> and her friend caught it all on camera. this morning, experts say they likely know why that sea lion attacked. a fun day at the beach in california turned into a terrifying experience for this 13-year-old. video shows a sea lion charging towards megan pagnini biting her leg. >> i started screaming as loud as i possibly could to see if someone could help me. >> reporter: megan was standing in the surf and says she never

saw the animal coming. >> i was playing around, jumping and dancing and having fun when all of a sudden it came out of nowhere and bit my leg. >> reporter: wildlife officials say sea lions are typically playful animals, but they can be unpredictable. back in 2017, a sea lion dragged this little girl into the water in canada. she was pulled to safety by a relative. still experts say attacks like these are rare. >> there are many thousands of surfers that use the water every day in california. there are many people that go in the water, and this type of event is extremely unusual. >> reporter: wildlife officials say the female sea lion that bit megan tested positive for a toxin produced by algae. the toxin called domoic acid is found naturally but at unsafe levels it can cause brain damage and violent behavior in marine life. experts say the california coast is seeing higher than usual levels of domoic acid possibly because of the warmer temperature and runoff that

boosts algae growth. >> what we're seeing is larger sea lions coming ashore presenting symptoms such as confusion, disorientation and even she is -- seizures on the beach. >> reporter: it can take a toll on humans who eat shellfish causing short-term memory loss. as for megan, she's hoping for a speedy recovery. >> i thought they were so cute and little, and now i think they're really scary and i don't ever want to get near one or see one again. >> cute but cautious. it says about two dozen sea lions with domoic poisoning have been rescued in recent days. an arizona man is in custody charged with attacking tas officials. it shows the man charging through a security checkpoint punching and kicking the agents who took him down. the police officers who arrested the man say he appeared to be mentally disturbed or under the influence of alcohol or drugs. and unexpected landing in

southern california. this small plane came down on a busy street outside los angeles. a pilot and a student pilot were on board. neither was hurt. the engine reportedly lost power with the student at the controls. in sports zion williamson says his emotions took over after he was chosen first in the nba draft. he's headed to the big easy to play for the new orleans pelicans. he held it together on stage but interview with espn. >> my mom sacrificed a lot for me. i wouldn't be here without my mom. she did everything for me. i just want to thank her. >> he says his mother put her dreams aside so he could pursue his. >> all rooting him on. also selected in the draft, bol bol from the university of oregon. he's heading to the miami heat. bol is 7'2" tall and that's shorter than his father manute bol who is the tallest player in nba history at 7'7". >> pretty tall.

on with your temperatures. 60 in brentwood, 65 in clear lake. everybody much cooler this morning. don't be surprised when you walk outside. as far as our temperatures this afternoon, we'll rebound into the upper 60s. half moon bay, san francisco, santa cruz 73. mid to upper 70s around the bay. low to mid 80s in the inland neighborhoods. 90s are around the corner. i'm show you them coming up. here is alexis. road work going late in the tri-valley, slowing you down heading into the east vay. conservative area westbound 580 between eden canyon and castro valley boulevard, we have the three right lanes blocked. that was for pavement replacement. they were supposed to be done at 3:30. they're not done yet. we've got quite the stretch of red there, three to four miles of heavy traffic to get through. i'll have an update as soon ghal meringights yet, but a cash lanes.up f

i'll shift to a terrible crash that happened overnight. chp is investigating this rollover collision in san jose. four people were ejected out of a sedan. one of those victims died. the crash happened overnight on the 10th street on-ramp to northbound 280. the fire department says the three people who did survive were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. all three of those people were conscious and talking with rescuers. chp now investigating the cause of the crash and all lanes did reopen just after 2:00 a.m. this morning a sacramento police officer killed in the line of duty is being remembered as a natural born leader. >> last night officer tara o'sullivan was honored at the sacramento police academy graduation. o'sullivan was shot and killed wednesday while responding to a domestic violence call. she grew up here in the bay area and had just graduated from that same academy six months ago. reuit'ssical fil and ran uphill for five miles
