hayward. good morning, amy. >> reporter: good morning, natasha. this came from a state audit. it was very critical of california state university system. it found the university has been keeping a big secret from students and state legislators and staff, that it has $1.5 billion in savings, but the price of parking has gone up, tuition has gone up, compile com employees say their wages have stayed the same. in 2008 it was $3,048. tuition went up in 2017 to $5,742. the chancellor has responded to this audit saying he doesn't consider this a surplus. he says this is for economic uncertainty, and it's also for short-term expenses like maintenance. csu also said its finances are transparent and they're always available for anyone to review.

live in hayward, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. a funeral will be weld sometime next week for officer tara o'sulliv o'sullivan. >> the sacramento police officer was fatally shot on wednesday evening. last night 56 recruits graduated in a sir moan that honored the fallen officer. o'sullivan graduated from the last academy claft only six months ago. the police chief says up at the new recruits' physical, ran uphill five miles with them to show support. officer o'sullivan lived in martinez, graduated from college park high school in pleasant hill in 2018. >> they have a fallen officer right now. they have to have officers going out on the street again. their officers right now are

taking the criminal element off the street again. why? because they're special and because you are special. >> an official page has been set up for the officer tara o'sullivan memorial fund. if you'd like to sign up, we have a link on our website. missouri's health department must decide whether to renew the license of the state's only abortion clinic. it's a planned parenthood in st. louis. a judge allowed it to temporarily remain open after the license temporarily expired on june 1st. if it closes, missouri will be the first state to not have an abortion provider since 1974. an appeals court says trump administration rules will be able to take effect in california. the rules ban taxpayer funded clinics from making abortion referrals. california, oregon and washington are challenging those

rules in court. the federal appeals court says the rules can take effect while the state appeals the lower court rulings. teachers and the challenges they face have been a focus of abc 7 news as part of our effort to help build a better bay area. a new study finds something pretty interesting, that santa cruz is the least affordable city in the nation for educators. abc 7's amanda decastillo takes a look at what's being done to address it. >> unfortunately it's a bad number one, that we're the least affordable place for educators to live. casey carlson says the problem is lack of state funding made worse by the lack of affordable housing. >> it's harder to attract and maintain teachers when tety ca a salary that's enough pay there. "usa toy, caree educators in abou$63,000, meaning most must

pay two-thirds of their salary to afford the median rent. >> when a big chunk of money comes to paying rent, it can get challenging. >> reporter: daniel says he spends half his paycheck to live next to schools but says many colleagues have chosen to commute to cut down costs. to assist, they seemed up with landed in 2017, partnership with the startup gives teachers a shared investment on a down payment for a home. santa cruz city schools is currently working on a plan to put rental housing on district property. >> it might allow me to save up down payment for a place of my own. >> reporter: the economic policy institute found in 2018 13% les private sector workers with similar levels of education. rounding out the top three of leastsan francisco.

folks making it through the toll plaza and heading towards the midspan, but no major issues. happening today, airline catering workers will hold an informal picket line at sfo's international terminal to draut attention to their fight for better wages and health benefits. a worker says more than 99% of the workers have voted to authorize a strike. the union is calling for higher wages and health insurance. the companies provide katering for many airlines at sfo. both sides are in federally mandated mediation. five dozen people protested an el sobrante man's decision to display a swastika in his front yard. 15,000 people have signed a petition asking for that swastika to go. >> we're really concerned about the rise in hate, hate groups and members of hate groups. so have it comehis close

capitol hill after the meeting wednesday. lawmakers asked her about her work on president trump's 2016 campaign. democrats are looking into incidents of alleged obstruction of justice and russian election interference related to special counsel robert mueller's report. alabama republican roy moore is taking another shot at the senate. the controversial former judge says he's going to run in 2020. he narrowly lost to democrat doug jones in 2017 after allegations of sexual misconduct emerged. moore has denied all of the accusations. switching gears a little bit. this is not what doctors at an animal hospital in boston expected to find. a family took their dog to the vet because he lost his appetite, he wasn't eating. that's because -- take a look. there were 19 baby pacifiers in his stomach, 19 of them. the vets discovered the pacifiering during an x ray. they removed them without surgery. that's a process i don't want to know about. the dog has fully recovered. he's back home being adorable

site t camilla, dempster and chronicle will be renovated. there is a warning from sausalito police. the president the's phone number is being used in a phone scam. police say scammers pretending to be officers and irs agents are threatening people with arrest. police say they don't ask for payments on the phone. if you pick up a suspicious call, hang up and call sausalito police. new data showing that asians now make up the largest racial group in santa clara and alameda county. asians account for 31.8% in alameda county's population. nearly 36% of people are of asian decent in san francisco county. california has the largest asian population in the country with more than 5 million people. from the greatest pokemon go, a new game is out for harry potter fans. we'll have a closer look at this version of the wizarding world.

a sedan. one of those victims died at the scene. the crash happened overnight on the 10th street on-ramp to northbound 280. the fire department says three people who survived were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. all were conscious and talking with rescuers. chp is now investigatingtion the cause of the crash. all lanes were back open as of about 2:00 a.m. developing news out of san mateo county. the suspect accused in two deadly stabbings is now booked in jail. >> he's also officially charged for the murders that happened earlier this week on that same stretch of skyline boulevard. abc 7 use's reporter unser huston live at the san mateo jail. >> reporter: good morning. late last night, a statement was released to confirm that malik dosouqi was booked into county jail, dpasing eight charges including two counts of murder. the other charges he faces are two counts of use of a deadly weapon, two counts of inflicting great bodily injury and two

counts of special circumstances. now, dosouqi was hospitalized with injuries after crashing his car attempting to flee the scene of the second stabbing on tuesday night. deputies shot at dosouqi who allegedly drove his car towards them as they were treating john pekipaki who was screaming for help. his family says he was a tow truck driver called out to tow a vehicle in the area. the first stapping happened monday night. the victim was 32-year-old abdul malek nasher. he was a taxi driver. his family says he was called out to the area possibly to pick up or drop off a passenger. they also believe nasher may have known dosouqi. both men were attacked in a rural stretch of skyline boulevard in san mateo county. the sheriff's office is still trying to investigate a motive and to see if the two stabbings

are linked. >> answer, thank you. this morning a sacramento police officer killed in the line of duty is being remembered as a natural born leader. >> last night officer tara o'sullivan was honored at the grade graduation. she grew up in the bay area and just graduated from the same academy just six months ago. last week she actually showed up at the new recruit's physical final and ran uphill for five miles with them to show her support. >> she had already done that test six months earlier. she didn't need to come out. nobody would have known she was not there. she's only one of a couple people from previous academies that come out and run, but she did it because she wanted to support the officers you saw tonight. nobody asked her to, nobody told her to. she just did it. >> 36 graduates were sworn in to the sacramento police. the other 20 go to other departments. >> officer tara o'sullivan lived

in martinez, graduated from college park high school in pleasant hill in 2011. she attended diablo valley college before transferring to sacramento state. a neighbor tells us she was a joy to be around. >> very outgoing, very outgoing, happy kid. i was laying in bed. what do you do when you wake up, you put facebook on and there it was. i could not believe it. >> officer o'sullivan joined two police explorer programs as a teen. shooting suspect adele sambrando ramos is scheduled to appear in court. records show he has a long criminal history including multiple sliens and battery cases. his es straengd wife tells the sacramento bee ramos was a good man and a good father. an official page has been set up for a memorial fund. we have a link on our website,

abc7news.com. tensions between the u.s. and iran are heightening following the downing of a u.s. drone. >> overnight president trump reportedly ordered a military strike on the islamic republic but then reversed course at the last minute. abc 7 news reporter mona abdi. >> reporter: both countries reiterated they don't want to go to war. when asked about the possibility, iran says it's ready while president trump says we'll find out. tensions with iran reaching new heights as president trump approved retaliatory air strikes against the islamic republic for shooting down a u.s. surveillance drone. >> iran made a mistake. >> reporter: sources tell abc news the operation was under way when trump abruptly called it off. this latest standoff adding to a week of hostilities between the two nations. iran claimed responsibility for shooting down the u.s. drone, the country's ambassador to the u.n. telling npr, quote, we tried to caution the drone through radio transmission but then says, quote, since it was a

we'll have temperatures in the mid to upper 70s for most of the peninsula. 80, just about spot on for your average in redwood city. near 70 in downtown south san francisco and sausalito. low to mid 80s through the north bay. warm in santa rose. mid to upper 70s along the east bayshore. as you move inland, brentwood at 88. expect temperatures in the 50s again tomorrow morning. look at that quick warming, into the 80s and 90s around the bay and inland. again sunday it starts to taper monday and we're below average by wednesday. alexis? >> good morning, mike. overall looking at a friday light commute. we're certainly not complaining here. one minor issue, we have reports of a two-car collision on the bay bridge, somewhere between the metering lights and treasure island off-ramp. i'm guessing it's probably on the incline or close to that. however, i'm not seeing any delays through that area. they said it was already off on the shoulder.

hopefully that won't turn into any big issue. as we can see, the entire drive across the bay bridge looks great once you make it through the toll plaza. metering lights flipped on at 5:23. we'll take a quick look at drive times, westbound 580 tracy to dublin in the yellow, 46 minutes. 16 minutes between dublin and mission boulevard. part of building a better bay area means making public transit work for everyone. b.a.r.t. got a major boost to help improve your experience. the federal transit administration announced b.a.r.t. will get $300 million to help increase the number of trains that can run in the transbay tube. the agency posted a message on twitter from its general manager. >> i just got a call from jane williams, the acting administrator from the federal transit administration, we got the grant. we're going to be let into engineering.
