university system has a surplus of $1.5 billion, this money set aside while the system has raised tuition, raised parking and even lobbied the state for more money. employees say their salaries have stayed the same. here is a look at what has happened in tuition. in 2008 it was at $3,048. it went up about 80% to while the university sits on more than a billion dollars. the chancellor has responded and disagrees with the term surplus, calling the money essential for economic uncertainty and for dealing with costs such as maintenance. one lawmaker says this report is troubling and is wondering if this money could help students who are struggling. live in hayward, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you, amy. we learned a funeral will be held next week for officer tara

o'sullivan. >> the sacramento police officer was shot and killed while responding to a domestic violence call on wednesday evening. last night 56 sacramento police academy recruits graduated in a sir moan that honored the officer. th police chief says she showed up at the new recruits' physical final a week and a half ago and ran uphill for five miles just to show her support. officer o'sullivan lived in martinez. she graduated from college park high school in pleasant hill in 2011. san jose's police chief took a moment to honor officer o'sullivan as he welcomed new reuniversity cruits to the acad >> the pd has a fallen officer right now. they have to have officers going out on the street again. their officers right now are taking the criminal element off the street again. why? because they're special and because you are special.

slow spots westbound 80 approaching the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights have been on since about 5:23 this morning. car pool lanes moving through without any issues. new developments in sacramento. state lawmakers have passed a controversial vaccine bill, allowing state health officials to reject vaccine exemptions approved by a doctor, but it would only work at schools where less than 95% of the students are immunized. yesterday hundreds of anti vaksers tried to persuade lawmakers to reject the bill. it passed the assembly house committee and needs the approval of another state committee. governor gavin newsom supports the bill. measles cases in california are at a 25-year high. airline katering workers will hold an informal picket line at sfo's international terminal to draw attention to their fight for better wages and health benefits. a union representing the workers for lsg sky chefs and gate

this is nuts. security cameras at phoenix' sky harbor airport caught the moment when a man violently burst through a security checkpoint and attacked a group of tsa officers. the man identified as 19-year-old tyrese garner from texas beat one agent, punched another. police arrested him. now he faces criminal trespassing and misdemeanor assault charges. five tsa agents had to go to the hospital. happening today, a chicago judge will decide on whether to appoint a special prosecutor in the jesse smollett case. a former justice wants to know whether state attorney kim fox mishandled the case involving the former "empire" actor who alleges he was the victim of a hate crime. police later determined smollett staged a hoax, but charges against him were dismissed. teachers and the challenges they face has been one of our

focuses in building a better bay area. a study finds santa cruz is the least affordable city in the nation for educators. they earn a salary of about $63,000. that means most of them have to pay two-thirds of their salary to afford the average rent in the city. the president of the snn cruz teachers union says the problem is lack of state funding made worse by the lack of affordable housing. >> when a big chunk of my income goes to paying for rent, b it gets really challenging to make ends meet, pay for other things, too. >> the rest of the bay area also in trouble. san jose and san francisco round out the top three least affordable cities for teachers to live in the whole country. we spent a week digging into the issues teachers face all over the bay area. we looked at what it takes for them to find housing. some are living with their parents. all our stories are in one place on our website, abc7news.com. you can search for building a better bay area teachers to find

let's take a look at the beaches this weekend. 68 at ocean beach tomorrow, low to mid 70s elsewhere, santa cruz at 77. watch out for the strong sunshine. it will be around sunday as temperatures will be about the same ball park, 67 at ocean beach to about 78 in santa cruz. remember the water temperature, 57 degrees. mcdonald's is set to test more automation. it wants to see if a robot can run the deep fryer. the company is also testing voice activated drive-through ordering. this is only happening at a location in illinois. mcdonald's says it's part of a broader initiative to improve customer experience inside its restaurants. they claim this will actually increase face-to-face time with people. now to fried chicken and

a gorgeous evening. hope you can enjoy it. heading back to the east bay we have a problem in the fremont area, southbound 880 at mission boulevard. we do still have a jackknifed semi that is off in the right ditch there. it sounds like it's actually a big rig dump truck. so they're trying to get a couple of tow trucks to the scene. it's not blocking lanes right now. they're still just slowing down to take a look at that. we're up to about two miles of heavy traffic behind that. overall a really light commute. here is walnut creek southbound 680 north of 24, you can see friday light volume here. that looks great. new this morning, the highway patrol is investigating a terrible rollover crash in san jose where four people we ejected out of a sedan. one of those victims unfortunately did not survive this crash. that happened overnight on the 10th street on-ramp to northbound 280.

the fiermt sre department says people were conscious and talking to rescuers and taken to the hospital. all lanes reopened just after 2:00 this morning. developing news now, president trump now responding after he canceled an attack on iran overnight. >> the u.s. military was moving into position when the president suddenly changed his mind. in the last 30 minutes he started tweeting saying, we were cocked and loaded to retaliate on three different sides but i asked how many people will die. 150 people, sir, was the answer from a general. ten minutes before the strike i stopped it, not proportionate to shooting down an unmanned drone. mona kosar abdi is joining us live now in washington, d.c. mona. >> reporter: to add to that, our sources are telling us they believe the situation would have escalated quickly had the plan been carried out. now both countries have reiterated they do not want to go to war. when asked about the

possibility, iran said that they are ready while the president said you'll have to see. tensions with iran reaching new heights as president trump approved retaliatory air strikes against the islamic republic for shooting down a u.s. surveillance drone. >> iran med >> reporter: sources tell abc news the operation was under way when trump abruptly called it off. the country's ambassador to the u.n. telling npr we tried to caution the drone through radio transmission but then said, quote, since it was a spy zone, we were left with no other option. late thursday president trump summoned congressional leaders to the situation room. some members from both parties urged for caution. >> we're worried that he and the administration may bumble into a war. >> reporter: the president's closest allies on the hill are

encouraging him to taking aggressive action. >> the only way iran changes its behavior is if they believe america will put options on the table that would create pain for their regime. >> reporter: again, the president confirming this morning he called off the attack because they feared the attack would have caused hundreds of civilian deaths. reporting live in washington, d.c., mona kosar abdi, nbc 7 news. developing news out of san mateo county, the suspect accused in two deadly stabbings is now booked in jail. >> also officially charged for stretch of skyline boulevard. anser hasan live at the san mateo county jail. >> reporter: the san mateo sheriff's office issued a statement to confirm 26-year-old malik dosouqi was released from the hospital and taken to jail. he faces murder charges, along

with use of a deadly weapon, two grates of great bodily injury and t and. he was taken to the hospital after crashing his car attempting to flee the scene of the second stabbing. officer shot at dosouqi who alleged drove towards them as they were treating 31-year-old john pekipaki who was screaming for help after being stabbed. he died on scene. pekipaki's family says he was a tow truck driver called out to tow a vehicle in that area. the first stapping happened late monday night. the victim 32-year-old abdulmalek nasher. his family says he was called out to the area possibly to pick up or drop off a passenger. they also believe nasher may have known dosouqi. dosouqi allegedly attacked both men in a rural part of san mateo county. this is an on going investigation. the sheriff's department is still trying to determine a

motive and if these two stabbings were linked. dosouqi has his first court appearance on monday. this morning a sacramento police officer killed in the line of duty is being remembered as a natural born leader. >> last night officer tara o'sullivan was honored at the sacramento police academy graduation. she was shot and killed wednesday while responding to a domestic violence call. she grew up in the bay area and had just graduated from this same academy six months ago. just last week she was there at the new recruits' physical final, ran uphill with them for five miles to show support. >> she had already done that test six months earlier. she didn't need to come out. nobody would have known she was not there. she's only one of a couple people from previous academies that come out and run. she did it because she wanted to support the officers you saw tonight. nobody asked her to. nobody told her to. she just did it. >> 36 of the graduates were sworn into the sacramento police

department. the other 20 recruits to ten other departments. officer tara o'sullivan looefd in martinez, graduated from college park high school in 2011. the school yearbook shows her taking aa class in ceramics and posing with the school soccer team. a neighbor tells us she was just a joy to be around. >> very outgoing, very outgoing, happy kid. i was laying in bed. what do you do when you wake up, you put facebook on and there it was. i could not believe it. >> officer o'sullivan joined two police explorer programs as a teen. >> shooting suspect adele sambrando ramos is scheduled to appear in court monday. records show he has a long criminal history including multiple sliens and battery cases. is estranged wife tells the sacramento bee that ramos was a good man and a good father. an official page has been set up for a memorial fund.
