>> abc 7 news reporter liz spent all day in the neighborhood and liz, how are people handling the news? >> reporter: yeah, good evening. the neighbors are shaken. i was here last night. it was dramatic has many neighbors had to evacuate through their backyard. we're learning new details and we spoke to one man that heard the gun sthots and walked outside. he saw the suspect looking for his wife who had just escapeesc take a listen. 24 hours after the murder suicide that killed five family members including the suspect, we're learning the dramati way the suspect's wife escaped unharmed. >> the wife jumped the fence and ran to my house and then she locked the door in my kids' room. >> reporter: this neighbor heard five or six gunshots from the home next door. he and his wife and 5-year-old son were hiding in the master bedroom when the suspect's wife jumped the shared fence and ran

inside their home. >> i was upset because what are you doing running into this house? you shouldn't be because i have a 5-year-old here and she knows that. >> reporter: the standoff started around night. >> female is he is terrifysteri. one of the r.p.s says there is a male with a gun. >> reporter: san jose police say the suspect's wife, daughter and niece escaped unharmed. police then entered their home to try to save the other victims. >> they saw at least one of the victims moving and figured that they needed to go in there and do something. >> reporter: a man and woman were taken to the hospital where they died. two other female victims were later found inside the home. late today, san jose police gave this update on facebook. >> there is no documented history of domestic violence between the suspect and family members. >> reporter: police say the suspect used a handgun and was found in his side yard. the neighbor says after hearing gunshots when he went outside to lock his doors, he saw the at's all -- that's the only .

thing i say is shock. >> reporter: now a couple of minutes ago, we did see a couple go inside this home. they did not identify themselves or wish to speak but they were carrying cleaning supplies. neighbors who know this family say they seemed relatively normal. the man we interviewed said the suspect was a very nice guy. the question is that motive? that's what police continue to investigate. >> liz, thank you. developing news in the east bay where traffic is still backed up going westbound through the pass. firefighters are mopping up a brush fire that broke out about 3:15 this afternoon in liverm e livermore. nearly three hours ago. all westbound lanes were closed for a time. two have since reopened. >> a man accused of luring two people to skyline boulevard last week then stabbing them to death made his first court appearance today. abc 7 melanie woodro was in court and so were several family members of one of the victims.

>> malik appeared in court today with his left hand and arm covered in thickly wrapped bandages. his arraignment was put over until july. the victim's family members looked right at him the entire h time. he's facing murder charges for stabbing a father and cab driver and a tow truck driver. both victims' bodies were found along skyline boulevard. the district attorney steve wag staff says i were stabbed to death within 24 hours within each other. >> are we dealing with hate crimes here? are we dealing with religious motives and a thrill killer? those are what we do not know yet. >> she doesn't know anything. se doesn't know anything. she sees people crying and sometimes she asks why are you crying? sometimes why my father is not here. >> reporter: he is being held without bail and arraignment held until next month. he was convicted of disturbing the peace this last spring.

on highway 1 he was apparently stepping into traffic and attempting to touch people while they were in their vehicles. he then got into a fight with sheriff's deputies. the d.a. says he was given one year probation and fined $600. melanie woodro, abc 7 news. the man accused of killing a sacramento police officer last week made his first court appearance today. adele ramos had a large bandage on his head. officials say he smashed his head against a bed frame in a jail cell and being held in the psychiatric wing to keep a closer eye on him. he faces murder and attempted murder charges but did not enter a plea today. officers responding to a domestic violence call at a home when investigators say ramos ambushed them last week. officer tara o'sullivan was for thursday and hundreds of officers attended a vigil for her at sacramento state university last

night. that's where he started police training. she was the first female graduate of the scholars program. she graduated from college park high school. she was a bay area native and an official page is set up for the officer tara o'sullivan memorial fund. we have a link on the website abc7news.com. some bart passengers deboarded in a rare way today. they evacuated their brand-new broken down train under the tracks. happened between 12th street stations in oakland and caused system wide delays. abc 7 news reporter leah melendez is live where that disabled train was taken, lee n leeann? >> reporter: what a way to start monday. bart will likely inspect, examine that train possibly tonight at the earliest but they won't know what happened until it is taken to one of the shops for inspection. >> there is going to be people that will be directing you to

the next stage. >> reporter: after being stranded for an hour on a bart train, passengers were evacuated and escorted in the dark by bart personnel. they had to use the elevated walkway alongside the tracks to get to the 12th street station platform. >> flash lights and make sure people are walking the right direction. if you fell, you would get hurt so i didn't think that there would be that kind of a risk on my monday commute. >> reporter: the breakdown happened at around 10:00 in the morning between lake march rid and 12th street station in oakland. >> like someone pulled the plug out from the train and everyone got thrown back so it's got thrown back and fell back into my chair. >> reporter: this is cell phone video given to us by a passenger as he and others treyed to make their way out of the disabled bart train. it happened at around 10:00 a.m. with 421 passengers on board. >> it was like 30 minutes, no announcement and then one of the technicians came in and they told us they would try to

restart the computer and they tried restarting the computer and all it did was turn off the a.c. >> reporter: today's train was a new one part of bart's fleet of the future rail cars. bart spokesperson anna duck worth said the agency is investigating the cause of the breakdown. it was taken to the mcelderry arthur station. >> it's unfortunate one of our new cars broke down, new trains broke down but we're very happy everyone was able to get off safely. >> annoyed but i won't stop taking bart. thereto is no alternative. yeah. >> reporter: so that walkway is so very narrow that some people had to leave their bicycles behind so they had to wait even longer. i'm live in oakland, lyanne melendez. >> thank you. ten days ago we were celebrating bart's plans to build a better area. transportation, the company building the fleet of the future is moving its manufacturing

plant to pits urtsburgh from upe new york. the plant will bring 50 new jobs to the area and going to start hiring this summer. abc 7 news devoted a full week to covering part to build a better bay area. we rode trains all day long visiting every station. we talked to riders and to the people in charge of making bart bet toter to see the changes coming. you can see the changes at abc7news.com. one week from today san francisco sales force will officially reopen but it might not mean much to commuters. on july 1st, the centers reopening means that people can go inside and can also get access to the rooftop park area. bus service, though, is not going to return on that day. in fact, there is still no clear date for when the buses that originally use the center will return. the discovery of a cracked steel beam shut down the entire transit center 272 days ago. we've been keeping track as you can see from this clock.

during this time buses have used the temporary chance bay terminal a block away. finding a fix for muni lead san francisco to launch a task force. they had share share of problems most recently with the light rail trains. equipment failures and brakes problemi are a few of the things left riders stuck. a san francisco supervisor says he hears constantly from constituents with issues. >> it's being able to count on the train getting there when it's supposed to. it's getting stuck in the trains when they stop moving and i think there is, you know, this frustration with some of these transit projects that seem to take forever. >> supervisor amanda says the task force has 2years of data to go over to figure out what is wrong and what it will take to get muni on track. muni is the most used transit

system. >> moving day for dozens of racehorses that had to suddenly leave golden gate fields. their trainer banned from the track. the problem originated in southern california. abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley explains the connection and is live with us tonight. >> reporter: that's right, dan. 36 horses hastily moved overnight to here, the pleasanton fairgrounds after their trainer was banned from the golden gate field track and also from santa anita in southern california. that's the track where 30 horses have mysteriously died in the last seven months. i spoke to the san francisco chronicles horse racing correspondent to get his take on this blame game. >> the management there has tried to deflect blame every other direction than their mismanagement of the racing surface and by making jerry a

scrape goat. >> a horse trained by jerry hwa euthanized over the weekend after a workout on the santa anita track. within hours, the group issued a statement saying we regret that mr. hollendorfer's record at santa anaita and golden gate fields does not match what we demand. he is no longer welcome to stable, race or train his horses at any of our facilities. i was a harsh punishment for the story trainer who won over 7,000 races and lives in richmond and did not return our calls. 30 horses have mysteriously died at santa anita since december. four trained by him. >> something happened, let's put it that way. he upset somebody. >> reporter: howie showed off pictures of thunder bolt.

>> not the norm. there is way too many horses in one place having injuries and coming up blame or hurt or dead. something else is at fault there. >> reporter: there are many unanswered questions, did trainers run unfit horses and use excessive medications? did heavy winter rains affect the track surface? >> it's all about the horses. they come first. it's their health. it's all about them. if they come back from the racetrack healthy and happy bouncing on their feet, it was a win. >> reporter: the california racing board confirmed there is an investigation underway in n conjunction with the los angeles d.a.'s office with the racing horse facilities. meanwhile, those 36 of his horses are here at the alameda county fairgrounds where some are expected to race later this week. i'mless leslie brinkley. >> a story you'll only see on a abc 7 news. >> see what a difference a week

we first introduced you to the gonzalez family a week ago but the next day, yourenosity meant their go fund me account exceeded the amount they lost. luz pena joins us with more on the update on the family. >> so much has happened in one week. you race mo-- rai-- rai-- $16,000 and one of you paid for them at a hotel for a week. investigators are following every lead. they are on this. this is a difference that a week and hundreds of generous viewers like you have made. after being duped out of $10,000 by a fake landlord. >> he take my money from my pocket, from my family but he no take our dreams. >> reporter: the gonzalez family went from sleeping in a van with their three children to raising more than $16,000 into sleeping in a hotel for a week. today, that week is up. >> this week we received fourne

more place. >> reporter: victor gonzalez and his wife lydia have been looking nonstop for a new place but this time around with lots of reservations. >> we try and do more carefully everything. she my wife. she say she scared for everybody. >> reporter: a fear victor says is justified because every other posting he finds online is by the same fake landlord who dupe them. >> he contacted me today and ask for the new place he have. i no recognize it. >> reporter: we contacted both san francisco and south san francisco police departments to a property management company that says they might have a strong lead to who this fake landlord is. over the phone, one of the investigators with the south san francisco police department said the scam might have connections in several cities in california. >> translator: i just want

people to be carefu that we wer, it can happen to anyone else. they make the scam so real like if they are in fact the property owners. >> reporter: south san francisco police did not want to go on camera to protect the investigation but confirmed they do have a name and number in connection to the lock box key used in another scam attempt. now going back to where the gonzalez family will be sleeping tonight, one of the viewers offer for them to stay over her house. they will be staying there for ten to 15 days until they find a permanent place. when they do, the gonzalez want to have all of us over so we'll keep you posted. in the newsroom, luz pena. >> that will be nice. thank you. preventing fires and protecting our homes are part of our efforts to build a better bay area some leaders are frustrated with the delay and opening a fire station in one lafayette neighborhood. it was supposed to open last year. fire station 16 sits in happy valley a section of contra costa county considered high risk for

fire. work began years ago to build the new station, the old one closed six years ago for structural issues and budget cuts. most of the construction is finished but a dispute over the placement of a meter and other issues stopped the project in its tracks. >> it should not have required me as a county supervisor getting involved, bringing in pg&e's legal counsel to say enough is enough. we need to move forward but this fire station. >> the meter has been installed but the transformer needed to power it is absent. pg&e is apologizing for the delays and says it'sworking closely with officials to make sure the fire house meets safety standards. if everything works out, the station could open august 1st. still more time to go. >> definitely. so we're in the beginning of a cooldown. >> which will be nice. >> cooldown has begun and we still have mainly bright and blue skies across much of the bay area right now.

you can see an increase in high clouds there and low clouds near the coast as well. check out the 24-hour temperature change. it's five to ten or 11 degrees cooler and some spots at this time yesterday so that qualifies it as a cooldown. here is a view of the city swallowed by the fog as we look westward from the east bay hills camera. we have low clouds and mid to high level clouds. oakland 69 and 76 in mountain view and san jose 79 and 77 morgan hill and 57 at half moon bay. here is the view where the clouds were a bit thicker and lower earlier. they seem to be lifting at the moment. 76 in santa rosa and napa 70, 75 and mid to upper 80s at fairfield and concord and 80 at livermore and this is the view from mount tam as the low clouds push over the bay and over san francisco. there is the forecast feature. this cooldown will continue for the next three days. we'll have below average temperatures around the middle of the week and will start warming up for pride weekend.

overnight mainly clear skies again with a few passing high clouds and low clouds in the coast. overnight lows will be in the mid 50s, cooler at the coast, low 50s there and milder in the inland east bay and tomorrow's highs will range from 64 and half moon bay to 66 in san francisco up in the north bay 77 san rafael and 82 santa rosa and 83 fairfield moving down to the inland and concord 84 livermore around the bay shoreline, 70 will be the high in oakland down to the south bay highs of 80s and 85 morgan hill. the cooldown will continue on wednesday and will be cooler with lows -- with highs in our inland areas reaching only into the low to mid 70s in many locations. we'll see mainly upper 60s around the bay shoreline and just about 60 on the coast and not much change on thursday. pretty much the same range of highs will prevail on thu can e. here is the accuweather

the home of the 2026 winter olympics goes to italy. the international olympic committee made the announcement today that choices were between milan and northern italy. dozens of san francisco kids are spending this week learning about water safety. they are participate income a four-day camp organized by the boys and girls club. it swim lessons and taught by stanford children's health. it's sometimes hard to get the kids out of the pool. >> a lot of kids want to stay in as long as possible which is good. it means lessons are working. we're trying to provide the bridge between not knowing how to swim and having access to

what's the difference between trimming a tree and cutting it down? an east bay man found out from pg&e. >> yeah, this pleasant hill man is furious after he says a pg&e crew led him to believe they were entering his yard to trim his trees to keep them safely away from power lines. >> yeah, he was shocked to later discover they had cut two trees down so he contacted michael finney for help. >> this is actually a fairly lengthy process. amazing. is this a case of miscommunication or a major

mishap on the part of the utility? he walks towards the area where his two 70-year-old blue oak trees once stood. this stump is the only evidence of one of those trees. what's left of the other is buried under debris. >> here is where my grandchildren had swings. here is where my great grandchildren had swings. here is where we sat under the tree, my wife and i. >> pg&e power lines hang over his backyard. t the utility determined the trees were too close to the power lines and wanted to take action as part of the fire mitigation efforts. they came to his home in february unannounced. >> i told them first i wanted to have my arborist come o o o satisfy satisfy me. >> he said pg&e decedit bere cuttihe trees bretued t th

and they were up cutting the tree. >> patrick stopped them informing them he had an agreement the utility would wait to give him time to talk to his tree expert. patrick spoke with the arborist and informed pg&e he had no objections to the crew trimming the tree. the crew returned and he looked out the back window and saw crews weren't just trimming the trees, they were cutting them down. >> i came out and said what's going on? they came to trim the trees. said no, we're cutting them down. why? you sent my tree crew home. >> patrick also accused the crews of destroying some of his ground plants. he says they also left without cleaning the debris. he contacted 7 on your side and we contacted pg&e. they told us the original decision to trim the trees was changed and it apologized for any confusion. mr. alexander's trees pose a safety's risk.

you know, it's been more than a decade since the rail project has been approved. a 520 mile line that would put los angeles and san francisco less than three hours from each other. the plan was to have it done by next year in reality, it's over budget behind schedule and downsized. instead of likely run bakersfield. as jean found out, properties

say the new tracks are returning into problems. >> reporter: this is what it looks like when the proposed high-speed rail line cuts through a farm. the line is making a four-mile long gash in the 2500 acres of orchards. he sold the authorities some land and been paid but he hasn't been compensated for the disruption of dividing his property. >> on one property a year and a half ago, they cut through a 100-acre almond orchard. i spent $150,000 on two pumps and redoing the system. and i haven't got a dime yet. >> reporter: just one example, attorney mark is representing raven and a total of 70 other farmers with similar claims totaling millions of dollars in damages against the high-speed rail authority. >> but high speed rail isn't going to pay him for what it's doing until the end of the case, which might be one, two, three

years away. >> reporter: jim claims this pattern of putting off baying fa -- paying farmers and businesss is a problem. >> we try to convince high-speed rail they are essentially stiffing these people and high-speed rail is ignoring it. >> reporter: of the growers complaints, high-speed rail authority says we work closely with him to minimize the impact the project has on them and their livelihoods. the authority says property owner haves been paid for relocation and 80% have been settled out of court but enav right now this 100-acre grape vineyard interrupts the path of the project and says he's not going to let him go through. >> i won't do nothing until i get paid. a the dmv will close offices statewide for half a day. that's coming up a month from now on wednesday, july 24th. it's to retrain employees on

the warriors rolled out the welcome map for the rookie class introducing three draft picks to the bay area. this is video of today's ceremony. jordan pool is in the middle and each the 39th overall pick played with the warriors and eric was taken two picks later. he won a national title with villanova. the big question is will any of these guys be able to help the warriors next season? >> i wish i could say everybody that plays in the nba loves basketball. that's not true. so you want to get guys that have a thirst for it that would play for $5, you know.
