fully involved by the time firefighters got on >> i seen the whole fourth floor in flames. >> big raging fire and it was really scary. >> then i was like wait, that can't be real. >> i thought somebody had a torch or something close to me because it felt like a lot of heat. i looked up and there was a fire in the corner of the building. >> our major concern was to protect the surrounding neighborhoods. >> a homeowner putting water onto the roof. embers are trying down throughout the area. scott is my photographer. you can see on the ground there the embers. >> what a fight in santa clara. sky 7 is over the condo complex right now. firefighters are still pouring water on the building. the damage is extensive. good evening, i'm dan ashley. >> i'm kristen sze. this fire started along el camino real near scott boulevard around 11:00 a.m. smoke could be seen for miles

and people nearby were evacuated. >> news reporter chris nguyen is live in santa clara with the latest on this tragedy. >> reporter: dan and kristen, tonight the fire remains under investigation but i can tell you that police have detained a person of interest in connection to the case. take a look behind me. you can see what's left of the structure. it was in the framing stages of construction. this project broke ground in april of last year. and went up in flames in a matter of minutes. massive flames as well as smoke that could be seen for miles away. firefighters battle this had four-alarm fire at a condominium complex under construction near el camino reel and scott boulevard in jason c jason spotted a coworker. >> as soon as i seen him, i told him we got to get out of here. >> reporter: manny had been

working on the project over the past year. >> i looked up and there was a fire in the corner. >> reporter: nearly three dozen firefighters tried to keep the fire from spreading. >> the radiant heat from this fire was intense and starting to make buildings in the area smoke a little bit. so our first action was to put water on the surrounding neighborhood and then attack the fire here. >> reporter: the building known as the anantarraables was to include affordable and market rate condos. >> we do what we can to expedite the process to help the developers get that back online as quickly as possible. we are in a housing crisis. that was an important project in our city. >> reporter: the fire was contained by mid afternoon but crews continue to put out hot spots throughout the building. >> i got two daughters. so just thankful i made it out okay and you know, i get to see

them. >> reporter: a live look from sky 7. and you can see the firefighters remain on scene tonight. they will be here throughout the evening to put out hot spots. one worker suffered a leg injury after he jumped from scaffolding. he was taken to the hospital. but is he expected to be okay. we're live in santa clara, chriss wynn, abc7 news. >> thank you very much. 23 patients at san francisco's laguna han do hadn't endured physical and verbal abuse from six employee. >> the abuse took place in two wards that treat dementia patients and involve victims ages 30 to 100. >> eric thomas is live in san francisco where city officials say they are outraged by these allegations. ericing? they are outraged and more. it's personal for mayor london breed to says her grandmother was a patient at laguna hospital

till she died in 2016. the next question is what to do about this. >> reporter: laguna honda hospital serves the poor and elderly, people who need care but can't afford private nursing homes. today the mayor and city health officials called a news conference to address what was being done to patient instead of for them. >> this is not something we will tolerate. >> these particular acts that have occurred by a few individuals will be addressed. >> health officials say while investigating an unrelated dispute by two employees, they found evidence that 23 dementia patients in two wards were victims of abuse starting with improper talk about sex and it got worse. >> verbal and physical abuse. neglect, privacy violations, medication errors and the administration of nonprescribed substances to some residents in an attempt to pacify them. >> reporter: the six workers are

also accused of making unauthorized video and audio recordings and raiding the pharmacy for drugs to keep them quiet. this woman hassey husband has been has /* been here for months. >> i've seen nurses mess with them till they cry. >> we need to figure out how to prevent something like this can from ever, ever happening again. >> the six accused employees have been fired and laguna honda's two top executives resigned. the case is in the hands of law enforcement to see if charges can be filed. >> we are better than this and committed to restoring the trust of the families and the patients of laguna honda. >> mayor breed and other officials say they're not going to stop there. they plan to reorganize the administration of the hospital. the health department says it will present a plan to the mayor within 60 days. of course, we will probably be

in san francisco when you're not a full-time employee. >> in order to support my family, i have to work every day more than 11, 12 hours. >> reporter: this driver has a 3 and 1-year-old. he says he hardly gets to spend time with them. rebecca martinez is an organizer for gig worker withes rising. > what once used to be a lucrative gig as turned into a job you have to work 70, 70 hours a week. >> reporter: lyft is advocating for an approach in line with the interests of our driver community by modernizing isn'ts owed labor laws that make it difficult to provide both flexibility and benefits. an uber spokesperson writes we support efforts to modernize labor laws in ways that preserve the flexibility drivers tell us they value while improving the quality and security of independent work. it's not just ride share drivers fighting for benefits. this nanny now requires a

>> reporter: hey, dan. we're about an hour away from this year's annual trans march kicking off from dolores park mot long from now. there's been a festival happening about all day here in dolores park. lots of speakers, singers, lots of activism. this weekend, it is all about pride. >> yeah, that, too. >> for these volunteers the weekend begins at this warehouse off bay shore boulevard. >> this is in pretty good shape. only one hole. >> reporter: almost 200 of these bright pink tarps are basically unpacked. 5,000 of these metal spikes will be needed to anchor the amazing 200-foot long pink triangle on top of twin peaks. he can see it for 20 miles on a clear day. patrick carney started the tradition 24 years ago. the pink triangle once a symbol of hate used to identify homosexuals by nazis.
