following his debate performance. we learned one of the top donors from here in the bay area has told cnbc he pulled support from joe biden following the comments biden made following working with segregation senators and his history of supporting the hide amendment. joe biden is fighting back against these cristicisms and here is what he said during an event with reverend jesse jackson, take a listen. >> we know 30 seconds to 60 seconds on a campaign debate exchange can't do justice to a live time commitment to civil rights. >> reporter: now this right here is we believe vice president biden arriving now. i'm not sure if you can see him mingling with guests. at this moment he's arriving to the sea cliff home. as far as this vent tonight, this one of three high-dollar fundraisers he has. he has another tonight and one

tomorrow morning. this is his first visit to california since launching his campaign and unlike many other top candidates who have have been coming to california over the past few months, he does not have any public campaign events scheduled this weekend. we hope to have a chance maybe when he leaves to ask hip abom that, as well. >> still a whirl wind weekend. kamala harris is expect in san francisco tomorrow for a private fundraiser of her own and sunday she'll participate in the pride >> we went to berkeley. >> reporter: this is where kamala harris grew up, a yellow house above a nursery school on the second floor where she lived with her mother and sister where she was bussed to elementary school starting in 1969. harris had to go two and a half miles north from her home to thousand oaks elementary school where a mural now stands

testament to the history-making era she live in. >> it was the first district in the country to voluntarily integrate the schools using a bussing plan and it was controversial. >> reporter: a bussing plan that is still in place today. >> i was really proud to see our history, the history of berkeley's voluntary integration talked about on the debate stage. >> there was a little girl in california. >> reporter: the debate was keenly watched by judy robinson from her home because kamala harris grew up two doors down and every day she says spent time in her mom's kitchen after school. >> it just brought back memories because it was all true, and i just remember that she would leave here on the bus and go to school, and come back. they would come here and my mother would watch over them until their mother would come home. >> reporter: harris said publicly she started kindergarten about the same time berkeley unified launched their

>> you can see the nearby streets where firefighters had to evacuate ten houses as a precaution. the fire was brought under control in about two and a half hours but firefighters continued to extinguish hot spots hours later. >> we were able to keep it from spreading and one factor helping is winds are light. all that intense heat and smoke is going in the air helping us out tremendously. >> one construction worker suffered a sprained ankle while escaping the fire. the developer sent us a statement within the last hour saying quote, we will work with local authorities and related companies to conduct a thorough review of what happened and how to effectively prevent any such instances from happening in the future. >> now people that live behind the construction site took quick action to keep their homes from burning. >> some grabbed garden hoses and others alerted neighbors. amanda is live with that story tonight. aman amanda? >> reporter: dan, ama we're

standing on el kawakacamino rea. that fire burned along this stretch earlier today. firefighters are still on scene. we noticed atf investigators on scene, as well. throughout the day, i've spoken with business owners and residents who say during that fire, once they walked outside it felt like they were hit by a massive heat wave hours after the fire was burning. there is still plenty of activity. neighbors here along clay street are calling today's scene chaotic. many homes sit behind the charred condo complex that was under construction. resident taylor lives kitty corner to the property. >> the heat was unbelievable and it took off into the sky and obviously developed into this unfortunate current. >> reporter: he and neighbors are counting blessings knowing things could have been worse. while some were grabbing garden hoses to save roofs, many others were working to save neighbors.

>> it's location squeezed in here tight and a lot of residential property here with older residents knocking on doors, getting peep oople out. >> reporter: the four-alarm fire put out a lot of heat. the bidding fire presents a risk to all surrounding structures. >> it's huge flames and darkness. >> reporter: david's car was parked about 150 feet from the flames. he pointed out some damage to his vehicle. signs of melting he says was caused by the fire. video taken by those first on scene show the intensity of the fire. other business owners along el camino real say the incident broke windows and damaged walls closest to the fast-moving flames. %-p. very quick. >> reporter: the fire was contained around 2:00 this afternoon about ten homes were temporarily evacuated. the fire's cause is still being investigated. in santa clara, i'm amanda del

castillo. >> we first sent out the notification about 11:24 this morning. stay on top of breaking news as it happens to enable the push alert feature. 23 patients at san francisco's laguna honda hospital endured physical and verbal abuse from six hospital employees. the department of public health made that announcement today. the abuse took place in two wards that treat dementia patients and involve victims age 30 to 100. abc 7 news anchor eric thomas is live where city officials say they are outraged by these allegations. eric? >> reporter: and lieu aguna hons a combination of hospital of the poor of san francisco. the relationship between patients and staff builds on trust and now the city has to work to regain the trust. >> we are better than this. >> reporter: san francisco mayor london breed wasn't the only one outraged by the allegations at

laguna honda but had a personal connection. >> my grandmother suffered from dementia and was there. >> this behavior is not something we will tolerate. this behavior is not something i will tolerate. >> reporter: health officials say while investigating an unrelated dispute by two employees, they found evidence that 23 dementia patients were victims of abuse starting with improper talk about sex and it got worse. >> verbal and physical abuse. neglect, privacy violations, medication errors and administration of non-prescribed substances to some residents in an attempt to passfy them. >> reporter: the six workers are accused of making unauthorized video and audio recordings and raiding the pharmacy to keep patients quiet. this woman's husband has been there for months. >> i seen nurses gang up and

people cry. >> we really need to figure out how to prevent something like this from ever happening again. >> reporter: the six accused employee haves been fired and the two top executives have resigned. the case is in the hands of law enforcement to see if criminal charges can be filed. >> we are better than this. we are committed to restoring the trust of the families and the patients of laguna honda. >> reporter: so the abuse allegedly went on for about three years but it was not found out until february of this year. so the city says it has to one, work to get rid of the culture of silence and two, they have to find a new ceo and three, they plan on reorganizing administration to make sure that nothing like this can happen again. live outside city hall, eric thomas, abc 7 news. >> thank you. in the north bay, we're taking a look at homelessness as part of the effort to build a better bay area.

would have never happened. >> we're looking at homelessness and solutions, part of the efforts to build a better bay area. >> wayne freed man talked to people and looked into the homelessness issue. >> reporter: it's a room with a view and a mobile one at that as long as he has enough social security to pay for the gas and maintenance and keep moving. gordon jennings homeless for a decade. >> what i'm doing here is i'm waiting for that island out there to become available so that i can apply a sign and get money. >> reporter: it's occupied now, an island in a place that isn't an island anymore and hasn't been for a long time. >> it's all over the place. navato isn't an island. >> reporter: as more homeless move in, some residents here have had issues getting their heads around that fact. >> you see more and more popping up on the street corners around here. >> i've lived here 50 years, and i've never seen it this bad. >> reporter: are you homeless? >> homeless. >> reporter: how long? it's no surprise to peter of the

sparking the gay rights movement. san francisco had its own stone wall with the cafeteria riot where members were arrested by police. >> it's a forgotten part of our history that we don't talk about how trans women of color in particular were leading the riots, stone wall. >> reporter: today the annual trans brunch happened and ambassador patty ann hall says she's faced violence and discrimination before but no more. >> i've gotten to the age now where i can't hide what i am and who i am. >> reporter: for these volunteers, pride weekend begins here. >> this is a good time. it's in good shape. one hole in it. >> reporter: almost 200 of these bright pink tarps are being unpacked. 5,000 of these metal spikes will be needed to anchor the amazing 200-foot long pink triangle on top of twin peaks. you can see it for 20 miles.

>> thank you. we do have a complete guide to pride for you including a full schedule of events all the way through sunday. it's on our website at abc news.com. in terms of the weather, it will be great, warm but not too hot. >> spencer christian is here with the forecast. >> i'll jump right to the pride weekend forecast rather than i like to forecast outside the box. let's get right to this. we're going to start the day, both days saturday and sunday with a little bit of morning fog but bymid morning and certainly through the remainder of the day, sunny with high temperatures in san francisco in the mid to upper 60s. it's going to be a nice, pleasant and milder weekend. here is a look at what is happening now. we have mainly sunny skies, high clouds in the southern most and eastern most parts of the viewing area. otherwise bright and clear and breezy with wind speeds up to 26 miles per hour in san francisco, gusts to 20 and breezy all around the bay area at this hor. let's move along and take some live camera views first from the east bay hills camera looking

towards the godden ga golden ga. 73 redwood and 71 san jose and 59 at half moon bay. and the view from mount tam, blue skies mostly over the bay. these are our current temperature readings up north. 79 in santa rosa and 73 napa and shifting eastward a bit. 83 fairfield and livermore 76 and from the rooftop camera, looking across the embarcadero, we will have mild to warm weather for pride weekend and turn warmer early next week and continuing gradually to warm up through the remainder of the week and a favorable forecast for the fourth of july. i like to throw in a little it ration. overnight we'll see some low clouds develop along parts of the coastline, not all of it and maybe a patch or two will work its way across the bay. we'll start the day with mainly sunny skies and end with sunny skies everywhere even on the

coastli coastline. so let's move along. mostly inland, a little fog at the coast and overnight lows will be in the low to mid 50s. cooler in the north bay where lows will drop into the upper 40s and tomorrow's highs in the south bay under hazy sunshine. we'll see highs of 80 in santa rosa -- san jose, rather. san jose in the south bay. santa rosa up north. morgan hill will top out at 85. on the peninsula, mainly mid 70s from san mateo to mountain view 74 to 76 and mid 60s on the coast and downtown san francisco will top out at 66. we get to santa rosa and north bay topping out at 82 and east bay look for highs of 71 at oakland and 75 castro va inland's b inland east bay highs of 86 and livermore. here is the accuweather seven-day forecast. and you can see that we're going to have bright sunny days through the seven-day period

we want to help make the bay area an even better place to live. >> abc 7 is dedicating more time, resources and reporting to the major stories that impact your quality of life and build a better bay area that includes keeping your safe on the highway. >> big rigs are supposed to exit the highway and use a rest area. when they pull on the shoulder, the results can be disastrous. >> melanie woodro has been looking into the hazard those big rig trucks can pose and found a nationwide problem. melanie? >> reporter: in late february, three siblings were killed when their family car struck a big rig parked on i-80 west in oakland near the approach to the bay bridge. the chp recently finalized their investigation and attributes speed, a wet road way and tires beyond the life spon than that d

the car to collide with the big rig. the big rig said he had ten minutes left of drive time and stopped on the shoulder to sleep where he was stopped for six hours because he says he thought it was a safe location. the chp says that's a common problem. we rode along with a cph officer to investigate. in life there is loss you prepare for and loss you never expected. in the last few months, she's experienced both. this is her family before three of her nine children, elih, sarah and eva died in a collision with a big rig that also critically injured her son aaron. the children had been driving back to the hospital during the middle of the night to see her father before he died. >> they were there that very last day. they hugged me and kissed me. they were trying not to say good-bye to my husband. i didn't know they were actually doing, they were saying good-bye to each other. >> reporter: according to the california highway patrol, the big rig driver parked illegally

on the shoulder in oakland and had gone to sleep. the chp says it happens all too often. we're in on overnight ride along with an officer. >> you can't park anywhere on the free way whether you're a car or a big rig. this is not a good spot to be parked. >> reporter: hercules i-80 todd hubbard is parked. his lights are off and so he is. >> this is not a good spot to park. >> reporter: while did you pull over there? >> my job is there in the morning across the intersection, so coming from stockton, it makes no sense to crash for two or three hours and wake up when i can crash here and watch a movie for five hours. so. >> reporter: did anything occur to you about whether or not this was a safe spot to pull over? >> actually, i pulled here before. >> that's a dangerous spot for him especially let alone anyone

that runs into him. >> reporter: the officer doesn't cite the trucker. >> it's not always enforcement we have to do, sometimes it can be education. hey, sir, how are you? >> reporter: southbound 680 just past sycamore. >> if you're parked and racked out, you're not supposed to be parked. >> reporter: he said he had to stop because he's driven too many hours. the chp sees trucks parked here often. >> 911 emergency. >> there is a truck parked there, he looks like he's parked for the night. no flashers. no lights. no triangles, nothing. seems have been dangerous. >> reporter: later, we approached the bay bridge heading into san francisco. inside this vehicle we find stockton resident antonio flores napping before a day of work. >> i understand you're probably trying to get some shut eye. >> just told me i cannot park here. >> reporter: did you realize it's not a great place to park? >> no. he's right.

>> reporter: in just two hours, we encountered three illegally parked vehicles on bay area highways. chris turner works for the commercial vehicle safety alliance. >> it is absolutely an issue for a long time. >> reporter: the issue not so much illegal parking but what could happen because of illegal parking. this video from the insurance institute for highway safety shows an under ride crash. it prompted a congressman to sponsor the act. it would require guards on the sides and front of a truck similar to the ones that exist on the backs of trucks. they make a difference. >> to the people who lose loved ones and obviously the people that lost lives, if it's preventable, then we should do it. >> reporter: and yet, as politicians and law enforcement work to make our roads safer, it's too late for this family still recovering from the grief of their unexpected loss. the sibling that survived is now out of the hospital and recovering. the trucking company rogue

transportation llc settled with the family. the attorney for the trucking company and its driver tells abc 7 news quote there were issues on both sides including the location of where the truck was parked and the speed of the vehicle that lost control and crashed into the truck. the attorney for the family says quote, although the passenger vehicle may have traveled onto the shoulder of the freeway due to speed, the fact remains that no one would have died but for the big rig truck being parked illegally on the shoulder in the darkness of night. the attorney for the truck driver says the chp cited his client for a non-emergency stop on the freeway shoulder. for the i-team, melanie woodro, abc 7 news. >> thank you. well, ahead of this weekend's pride celebration, we want to highlight the people who have not been afraid to stand up for the change and to create acceptance and love. >> we'll introduce you to a gay man who fled from mexico to san

as the bay area celebrates pride weekend, we want to highlight those not aparade fra stand up for change. >> he left his native mexico to start a new journey here in san francisco. >> lyanne melendez has his story. >> it was my secret i could not share. i like to play with barbies with the kids, with the girls. i wasn't allowed to be myself. >> reporter: telling his story he took us back to his native mexico where being different in a small town was terrifying. >> start attacking and say things in spanish about my sexual orientation. >>reporter: his parents were not accepting of the life he wanted to have. >> mom, dad, i'm gay, my mom start crying. >> reporter: he says his father wanted to change him physically abusing him. >> a few times but i forgive him. >> reporter: his break came in his early 20s. he received a scholarship to study hotel management in washington d.c.

>> just seeing people happy and coming here and seeing different kind of gays, all color, all flavors. >> reporter: and he knew he could never return to his town in mexico, his friends reassured him. >> no, absolutely not. should not come here. there is no future for us. >> reporter: after moving to san francisco, he applied for asylum and told an immigration court about an affair he had with someone high in the ranks of the mexican police who hid his sexual orientation. >> obviously, he didn't want to say he was gay. he has kids. he was going to kill me. >> reporter: when the immigration judge welcomed him to america, he was back. his mother calls to see if he's dating girls. his father accepted his life as a gay man. you're studying journalism now? >> right. i try to change my career. i've been in hospitality for 14 years. never too late, right?

it's been more than a month since the san francisco board of supervisors passed and the mayors signed the ban on cashless stores. >> where do things stand today? michael finney has been keeping track of that and joins us with the latest. >> i have had people ask why do we still have cashless brick and mortars? that's a good question. so let's go on a walk around the city. amazon go is still opening cashless stores in san francisco and still getting rave reviews. even if the shopping experience feels to some like it should be illegal. >> i felt weird. i felt like i was stealing from amazon. >> the board of supervisors passed and the mayor signed the brick and mortar cashless ban a year ago. it gave 9 0 days to compile. with 35 days past, no one seems to be in a hurry. amazon go before the ban and

amazon go after. no change in san francisco although cash is now accepted in a new york city amazon go location. there is still plenty of time to implement but how is this going to work out? darron archer is with a software company focussing on e commerce. >> the research that we saw was that most folks are looking for that almost three quarters. not so much they want cashless but the convenience factor. >> is this the modern version of the driveup window? >> i think so. 72% on our survey said they wanted curb side pickup. >> because one is for convenience and not cashless, the san francisco model of providing both will work. >> can you put those two together? >> i really think so. i mean, i think that we not only need to put together but i also

would challenge us in the industry and retailers and brands to put it together in such a way that still goes back to the first goal. >> that goal convenience and the law does carve out exceptions for pop-ups and food trucks. valley brown introduced the legislation and saw it through to passage. she says profegssionals like attorneys don't have to accept cash, either. >> have you ever met a lawyer that wouldn't take cash? come on. go in with $10,000 and say can you represent me, here is cash? i don't know a lawyer that would say no, i can't do that.
