news to build a better bay area, this is abc 7 mornings. good morning. it is saturday, june 29th. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with a first look at the accuweather forecast. here is meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, chris. good morning to you. we have the low clouds and fog to start out with. in fact, it is patchy along the san mateo coast. we will see plenty of sunshine today. in fact, temperatures will slowly warm up. 51 in novato and mountain view, with upper 40s to the north. so a little cool. in fact, as we look at the 24-hour temperature change, check it out, five to seven degrees cooler in the north bay and in our east bay valleys. a look from our roof camera, and your forecast today calling for plenty of sunshine. highs in the 70s to the low 80s

inland by noon time, and then throughout the 4:00 hour we bay. staying cool at the coast but some sunshine. chris. >> lisa, thank you. happening today, volunteers will install the annual pink triangle atop twin pinks in san francisco. it was once a symbol of hate used by the nazis to identify homosexuals it it is now a symbol of giveaway rights. it stretches 200 feet across and can be seen by 20 miles. >> that's what the event is about, is remembering the hatred of the past to help prevent it from happening again. >> the installation starts at 7:00 this morning, and then a check ration ceremony with elected officials and the san francisco gay lesbian freedom band at 10:30. it is the 27th annual dike march starting at delores march. it seeks the community.stetoday's festiv.

the pride celebrations kicked off last night with the 15th annual trans march. thousands of people took to the streets of san francisdelores p. "abc 7 news" repor pena was there. >> reporter: san francisco's more colorful than ever. the 15th annual trans march kicked off with rainbow flags and outfits worn by more than 6,000 people, adorning our city from delores park to market street. >> it means i get to come together with my community and see the people who support our community. >> reporter: jenny has been a transgender woman for three years. for her it was a dream come true. >> i came out a few years ago after having a near-death experience. >> reporter: in the crowd, different faces and stories. >> i have a family that's not as supportive, so to know that people are out there who want to love you at a familiar level is -- is really nice to know. >> reporter: for andrew martinez, marching meant fleeinr

feet away from massive flames and heavy dark smoke, witness video captures the intensity behind friday's four-alarm fire. >> i will say it not take a minute to spread the fire very quick. >> reporter: this business took a hit. his windows cracked, right across the street from the construction site. plastic parts on one car parked nearby appeared melted and more. what would have been the anantara villas with a number of conduos were consumed by the fire. others recalled what happened moments before running on for their lives. >> i thought somebody had a torch or something close to me because it fel like a lot of heat and i got scared and i looked up and there was fire in a corner of the building. >> reporter: flames produced such intense heat surrounding structures started to smoke. some residents grabbed garden hoses to keep the fire at a distance. others did what they could to

alert neighbors. >> this location is squeezed in tight and there's residential property with older residents. they were knocking on doors getting people out. >> reporter: three dozen firefighters were on hand. atf investigators responded. the fire was contained around 2:00 p.m., though crews stayed on scene to monitor hot spots. >> the heat was unbelievable, and then it just took off into the sky and obviously developed into this unfortunate occurrence. >> reporter: at one point a person of interest was detained by santa clara police for questioning, but we learned that person has since been released. now, santa clara police tell me that until santa clara fire says that this is a safe scene no investigators have been able to access the site. so we'll have to wait for that. for now, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. i'm reporting in santa clara, amanda del castillo, "abc 7 news." legend usa, the developer, sent us this statement saying, quote, we will work with local

authorities and related companies to conduct a thorough review of what happened and how to effectively prevent any such instances from happening in the future. we first sent out the alert about this fire at 11:24 a.m. yesterday through the "abc 7 news" mobile app. it is one way to stay on top of blaking news as it happens. just be sure to enable the push alert feature. former vice president joe biden is in the bay area this weekend for fund raisin. today he will be in los altos. this comes after the democratic debate and that confrontational moment between biden and senator kamala harris over civil rights issues. a do-over. >> before i start i would like to say something about the debate we had last night. >> reporter: he went on to reference this moment when california senator kamala harris confronted biden over his comments about working with segregationists in congress and his position on bussing. >> there was a little girl in california part of the second class to integrate her public schools and she was bussed to school every day, and that little girl was me. >> i did not oppose bussing in america. what i opposed was bussing ordered by the department of education. that's what i opposed. >> reporter: the morning after he sought to clarify. >> we all know that 30 seconds to 60 seconds on a campaign debate exchange can't do justice to a lifetime committed to civil rights. >> reporter: but in california where biden leads among democratic voters, some supporters may now be second guessing. tom mcinerney, a long-time donor from the bay area, says he is pulling back his support for biden and warns others may do

the same. the reason he said he is pulling back his support is because of biden's support of the hite amendment and his comments about working with segregationists. it is biden as first visit to california since launching his campaign. he has a fundraising event in los altos but no public campaign events. welcome back, everyone. time right now is 5:11 on this saturday morning. we are taking a live look outside from our emeryville camera. you can see the city of san francisco in the distance there. clear skies for now. we will get a check of the full accuweather report from meteorologist lisa amin gulezian in a bit. first, pride celebrations are under way on both coasts this weekend. in new york city they are taking on a special significance. 50 years ago a crowd at the stonewall inn took a stand for lgbtq rights. reporter josh ien einiger has t story. >> reporter: they celebrated in the village, celebrated progress. 50 years since there really was

nothing to celebrate at all. >> a one level it made me sad, but on another it is like how far we've come. >> progress is not guaranteed. progress is won by fighting back. >> reporter: this was the kickoff to pride weekend, itself the grand of an entire pride month. all of it, all of the flags and flam buoyance and the right to marry or live a life started at the stonewall inn. >> every right and freedom they have today happened because of people, our elders making it happen right here in this very spot. >> 1969 on this very day -- >> reporter: stacy lentz is co-owner of the stonewall where 50 years ago christopher street looked a lot different. that's the night something called the public morals squad, part of the nypd, raided the place and set off days of protests that gave birth to a movement. >> it was just wrong, plain and simple. it was wrong. >> reporter: the night of the stonewall raid jim waters was

only 9 years old. now he is one of the police department's highest ranking chiefs in charge of counterterrorism. and where once police officers were targeting the gay community, half a century later his cops are instead looking out. >> they are a high-value target, if you will, and so there are people that have been very vocal about not believing in what they believe and looking to do them harm and we're here to protect that. >> reporter: there are no specific or credible threats against any of the revelry in new york this weekend but the nypd is taking no chances with strategically placed blocker cards to protect the crowds to undercover cops within the crowds to cameras and raid ye h detectors above the crowds. with the crowds attending the march on sunday, cops are taking no chances as they keep the landmark celebration safe. in new york, josh einiger, "abc

7 news." a major scandal is rocking a hospital over physical and verbal abuse towards patients. it is in the forest hill neighborhood. they say employees you subjected 23 patients to inappropriate talk about sex and recorded it. investigators also say they raided the pharmacy to drug the patients into keeping quiet. mayor london breed spoke her connection to the hospital. >> my grandmother suffered from dementia and she was at la guna honda for many years before she passed away in 2016. >> this behavior is not something we will tolerate. this behavior is not something i will tolerate. >> the six employees have been fired. two top executives have also resigned. no criminal charges have been filed. this isn't the first scandal to rock la guna honda. the i-team uncovered hospital administrators using money from the gift to buy simple

pleasures for patients. you can find the reports at abc7news.com. 200 infected dogs are being moved to a warehouse. oakland animal services says the warehouse was cleaned and filled with kennels and play areas. pet food express donated bowls and leashes and set up an emergency fund to help out with costs. the dogs will be quarantined there between four and six weeks. several new laws go into effect on monday. california's gas tax goes up by six cents to more than $0.60 a gallon, the highest in the nation. anyone purchasing ammunition will be required to undergoing a background check to search for felony convictions, and companies must disclose whether people are interacting with bots or humans. head to our website,

abc7news.com, for news on the rest. we have all been there, stuck at the dmv for hours. now the department is trying to cut down on wait times. starting july 1st, offices here and across the state will open an hour earlier. they p open the doors at 7:00 a.m. except wednesdays. here are the bay area locations where this is happening. daly city, fremont, petaluma, san francisco, san mateo and santa clara. the dmv offices o o o o and in san jose have opened 7:00 since last summer. a project was put in place to retrofit the bridge for earthquakes. the bridge meets size mick standards and is taller. it links jack london square and the brooklyn basin. it is part of the san francisco bay trail. let's get a full check of the

weather with meteorologist lisa amin gulezian. >> hi, chris. good morning. you can see fog out over the bay, not much though. it is a shallow and compressed marine layer. from the san mateo coast, patchy over san francisco. a look from mount tam looks pretty clear, doesn't it, with the clear sky and numbers mainly in the 50s. 49 in morgan hill. 54, san francisco. half moon bay, 52. redwood city with 58 for you in oakland. speaking of the east bay you can see a little bit of fog out here. we will see very comfortable temperatures again. morning numbers are cool, in the upper 40s from santa rosa, napa, petaluma, with mid 50s in fairfield. 51, liver move. 58, concord. you can see the tower decked out in pink today. mild to warm for pride weekend. minor ups and downs for next week, so we're not looking at any extremes. in fact, weather should be pretty pleasant, still below average, three to four degrees below average in most locations

but looking pretty good for the 4th of july. as we look at our low clouds and fog, you got to really squint to see the strip of low clouds and fog from the san mateo coast, but we will get some high clouds in here later on today at 5:00. and then once again overnight we'll look for that low cloud deck to hug the shoreline. high clouds. and then in the afternoon it pulls back very similar to today, maybe coming up about a degree or so and, once again, partly sunny skies at the shoreline. nice and clear here in santa cruz. looks to be a beautiful day where numbers will top out in the lower 70s. some fog in the morning. afternoon sun. the sea breeze up to 20 miles per hour. low to mid 60s. a little bit breezy but a typical afternoon at the beach. if you are headed to pleasanton, how about 72 for noon time temperatures? the alameda county fair with 3:00 numbers in the upper 70s. 6:00, you will be about 75 and a few more clouds dropping off to the low 60s by about 9:00.

so today in the city should be a beautiful afternoon. 66 downtown. tomorrow, waking up to low clouds and fog and maybe a degree warmer, so pride celebrations will get under way cool and finish off pretty comfortable. 86 in concord today. 80, san jose. look for 75, richmond. mid 70s on the peninsula, a little shy of average. 82 in santa rosa, but really nice weather. a few high clouds around. the seven day accuweather forecast featuring more suns after the clouds tomorrow. temperatures just about the same. we will see a minor dip on monday, the numbers reaching a little bit into tuesday with upper 80s inland, mid 70s around the bay. for wednesday, morning fog, afternoon sun. 4th of july, fog flirting with the coast like we usually have, but otherwise afternoon highs in the upper 80s inland and warmer towards next friday inland. you can download our accuweather app to check out the temperatures and the pretty comfortable weather.

our "7 on your side" michael finney has been keeping track of that. >> reporter: amazon go is still opening cashless stores in san francisco and still getting rave reviews. even if the shopping experience feels to some like it should be illegal. >> i felt weird. i felt like i was stealing from amazon. >> reporter: the board of supervisors passed and the mayor signed the brick-and-mortar cashless ban more than a month ago but gave businesses 90 days to comply. th 35 days now passed, no one seems in a hurry to implement the change. sweet green before the ban, sweet green after. amazon go before the ban and amazon go after. no change in san francisco, although cash is now accepted in a new york city amazon go location. there is still plenty of time to implement, but how is this going to work out? darryn archer is with elastic path, a software company focusing on ecommerce. >> the research that we saw was

that most folks are looking for the check out less payment, the vast majority, almost three-quarters. in that it is not that they want cashless, they just want the convenience factor. >> reporter: is in the modern version of the drive-up window? >> i think so. in fact, 72% on our survey said they wanted curb side pickup. >> darin says because it is for convenience and not cashless, the san francisco model of providing both will work. >> can you put those two together? >> i really think so. i mean i think that we not only need to put together, but i also would challenge all of us in the industry and all of the retailers and brands to put it together in such a way that it still goes back to the first goal. >> reporter: that goal, convenience. and the law does carve out exceptions for pop-ups and food trucks. supervisor brown introduced the legislation and saw it through to passage. se says professionals like

we've had an excellenth trade t stalled and a threat of new tariffs on the table, the presidents were looking to make a deal. later mr. trump said the two sides declared a truce for now. >> for at least the time being we're not going to be lifting tariffs. >> reporter: president trump also making news on twitter, announcing he would like to meet kim jong-un at the dmz while visiting south korea on sunday. i asked the president about that during his meeting with the saudi crown prince. >> all i did was put out a feeler if he would like to meet. he sent me a beautiful birthday card. >> reporter: the president said if a meeting with kim happened it could be brief, even just two minutes. >> very receptive and he responded, and so we'll see. >> reporter: north korea called the president's offer a very interesting suggestion. and the president at his press conference asked about his meeting with russian president vladimir putin. >> i thought it was really a tremendous discussion. i think they would like to do trade with the united states and

they have great product. >> reporter: he was also asked whether he spoke with the saudi crown prince about the murder of journalist camal khashoggi. >> they've taken it very, very seriously and they will continue to. >> reporter: karen travers, abc news, traveling with the president in osaka, japan. san jose congresswoman zoe loftgrin is vowing to secure our elections. she says it is in response to the president refusing to hold the russians responsible for interfering in elections. >> house democrats will defend american from all threats, both foreign and domestic. the safe act represents an urgent, critical step to securing our election infrastructure and protecting the integrity of the ballot and our democracy. >> in the democratic weekly address the congresswoman talks about the safe act which stands for security america's federal elections. house democrats passed the bill which would upgrade the security

of voting systems across the country, including replacing outdated machines and requiring paper ballot voting. happening today, oregon senate republicans plan to return to work after a nine-day workout. the republicans shut down the senate to block a climate change bill. they will be back to work today because they have an obligation to pass budget bills. he believes they can complete the work by tomorrow night's deadline. time now is 5:33. as the bay area celebrates pride weekend we want to highlight the people who haven't been afraid to stand up for change. andy damian corea is a gay man who left his native mexico to start a new journey and begin the healing process. he has never gone back for fear. he found the new life he wanted here in san francisco. barbies, with the girls, i wasn't allowed to be myself. >> reporter: telling his story, he took us back to his native mexico where being different in a small town was terrifying. >> they started attacking, saying things in spanish about my sexual orientation. >> reporter: even his parents were not accepting of the life he wanted to have. >> mom, dad, i'm gay. my mama started crying. >> reporter: he says his father wanted to change him, physically abusing him. >> a few times, but i forgive him. >> his break came in his early 20s. he received a scholarship to study hotel management in washington, d.c. >> just seeing people happy and coming here and seeing different kind of gays, all colors, all flavors. >> reporter: and he knew he could never return to his town in mexico. his friends reassured him. >> no, absolutely not, you should not come here. there is no future for us. >> reporter: after moving to san francisco he applied for asylum.

he told an immigration court about an affair he had with someone high in the ranks of the mention cal police who hid his sexual orientation. >> obviously he didn't want to say he was gay. he has kids. he's gonna kill me. >> reporter: when the immigration judge welcomed him to america, he knew he had won his case. he has never been back. his mother still calls him to ask if he's dating. girls. his father has accepted andy's life as a gay man. >> reporter: but you're studying journalism now. >> right. i tried to change my career. has been in hospitality for, like, 14 years and it is never too late, right? >> reporter: i asked one last question. what pride now meant to him. >> pride means be happy and just keep in mind that 50 years ago people fought very hard for where i am right now. so i have to embrace that, my freedom, and i am able to be

questions, and that's a wrap on morning sports. have a great weekend, everybody. i'm larry beil. getting a check now of the bay area forecast with meteorologist lisa argen. hi, lisa. >> hey, chris. we have fog out there. a look right now in santa cruz. it looks a little murky but we are counting on some sunshine and temperatures in the 70s today. so numbers have been a bit below average the past few days. we will come up a few degrees inland. plenty of sunshine out there, but as we look at the next seven days over in walnut creek, no, we're not going to warm up toof. today in the low 80s, coming down a few degrees tomorrow into monday, and then look at the rest of the week. yes, very comfortable with numbers in the lower 80s. a live look outside from our roof camera where you can see that bank of low clouds and the breeze. that will be up to 20 miles per hour today, that sea breeze, and partly sunny conditions at our beaches. so as we check out the rest of the bay, notice that there is fog and clouds, patchy in

nature, across the bay according to live doppler 7. this is our sutro tower camera. the depth of it, at about 1,000 feet. so it is pretty shallow. we have a compressed marine layer that's meaning that it will clear out rather quickly and we'll get into a mostly sunny afternoon with a few high clouds. 54, san jose. 48, morgan hill. mid 50s, half moon bay. san francisco, 58. this is walnut creek where we are looking at a clear start to the day. upper 40s, santa rosa, napa, petaluma. a little cool in the north bay, cooler than in the past couple of days. mid and upper 50s by the delta, con cou concord and livermore checking in at 51 degrees. we will wait for those clouds to clear near the airport and temperatures near 80 degrees in san jose. minor ups and downs for the next several days and into next week. pret pretty typical weather for the
