news to build a better bay area. this is abc 7 mornings. good morning to you. it is saturday, june 29th. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with a first look at the accuweather forecast. here is meteorologist lisa argen tracking live doppler 7. hi, lisa. >> hi, chris. there's fog out there across the bay and also down along the san mateo coast. check out this beautiful shot from our sutro tower camera. we see it floating over san francisco. 54 here. it is 54 on the coast. upper 40s, morgan hill. walnut creek, plenty of sunshine and clear sky. looking at 57 in concord and we will look for not only sunny skies in our inland valleys, slightly warmer, mid 80s there. we will have 70s around the bay, some fog at the coast, and a sunny afternoon. typically cool there.

number's coming up a few degrees in the inland valleys today, but the week ahead looks rather typical. i will explain and have a detailed forecast for pride festivities in a few minutes. chris. >> lisa, thank you. happening today, volunteers will install the annual pink triangle atop twin pinks in san francisco. the pink triangle was once a symbol of hate used by nazis to identify homosexuals. it is now a symbol of gay rights. it stretches 200 feet across and can be seen for 20 miles. >> that's what the event is about, remembering the hatred of the past to help prevent it from happening again. >> the installation starts at 7:00 this morning. there then will be a commemoration ceremony with elected officials and the san francisco lesbian and gay freedom band at 10:30. it is the 27th annual dike march starting at delores park. it seeks to bring lgbtq people together to celebrate unity and raise consciousness about the community. the rally starts at 11:00 and march at 5:00.

organizers expect tens of thousands of people to take part in the festivities. the pride celebrations kicked off last night with the 15th annual trans march. thousands of people took to the streets of san francisco from delores park to market street. "abc 7 news" reporter luz pena was there. >> reporter: san francisco's more colorful than ever. the is ath annual trans march kicked off with rainbow flags and outfits worn by more than 6,000 people, adorning our city from delores mark to market street. >> it means i get to come together with my community and see the people that support our community. >> reporter: jenny has been a transgender woman for three years. for her it was a dream come true. >> i came out a few years ago after having a near-death experience. >> reporter: in the crowd, different faces and stories. >> i have a family that's not as supportive, so to know that people are out there who want to love you at a familiar level is really nice to know. >> reporter: for andrew martinez, marching meant freedom after fleeing mexico in fear for

her life. >> it is more dangerous over there, more danger because there's not much human rights as we have here. >> reporter: alice clark and her church gave out hugs and told many they were loved. >> people that come for a hug say thank you, thank you so much, and the hugs go on for a while. i think they really are more nourishing that way. >> reporter: at hamburger mary's drag queens reminded the crowd that pride for them is everyday. >> this is our life. yeah, we do shows, you know, all year long. many of our entertainers are full-time performers, not just at hamburger mary's but around the country. >> we have a list of many pride events taking place this weekend. you can check it out on our website, abc7news.com. in san francisco, luz pena, "abc 7 news." in the south bay a four-alarm fire devoured a condominium complex under construction in santa clara, sending workers running for their lives. "abc 7 news" reporter amanda del castillo has the details.

>> reporter: just a few hundred feet away from massive flames and heavy, dark smoke, witness video captures the intensity behind friday's four-alarm fire. >> i will say it is not taking a minute to spread the fire very quick. >> reporter: bose's bus niece took a hit, his windows cracked across the street from the construction site. plastic parts on one car parked nearby appeared melted and more. what would have been a mix of 58 affordable and market-rate condos, consumed by fire damage. one worker at the site was injured in their escape. others recalled what happened moments before running for their lives. >> i thought somebody had a torch or something real close to me because it felt like a lot of heat. i got scared and i looked up and there was a fire in the corner of the building. >> flames produced such intense heat surrounding structures started to smoke. ten homes were temporarily evacuated. some residents even grabbed garden hoses to keep the fire at a distance.

others did what they could to alert neighbors. >> this location, it is squeezed in here pretty tight and there's a lot of residential property here with older residents. they were knocking on doors, getting people out. >> reporter: three dozen firefighters were on hand. atf investigators also responded. the fire was contained around 2:00 p.m., though crews stayed on scene to monitor hot spots. >> the heat was unbelievable, and then it just took off into the sky and obviously developed into this unfortunate occurrence. >> reporter: at one point a person of interest was detained by santa clara police for questioning, but we learned that person has since been released. now, santa clara police tell me that until santa clara fire says it is a safe scene, no investigators have been able to access the site. so we'll have to wait for that. for now the cause of the fire is still under investigation. i'm reporting in santa clara. amanda del castillo, "abc 7 news". legend usa, the developer,

with jesse jackson he seemed to be looking for a do-over. >> before i start i would like to say something about the debate we had last night. >> reporter: he went on to reference this moment when california senator kamala harris confronted biden over his comments about working with segregationists in congress and on school bussing. >> there was a little girl in california who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools and she was bussed to school everyday, and that little girl was me. >> i did not oppose bussing in america. what i opposed is bussing ordered by the department of education. that's what i opposed. >> reporter: the morning after he sought to clarify. >> we all know that 30 seconds to 60 seconds on a campaign debate exchange can't do justice to a lifetime committed to civil rights. >> reporter: but in california where biden leads among democratic voters, some supporters may now be second guessing. tom mcinerney, a long-time

democratic donor from the bay area, says he is pulling back support for biden and warns other may do the same. the reason he says he is pulling back support is because of the hite amendment and comments about working with segregationists. as far as this vits, it is biden's first visit to california since launching his campaign. he has a fundraising event in los altos but no public fundraising events. liz kreutz, "abc 7 news." kamala harris is expected in san francisco for a fundraiser and she will participate in the pride parade on sunday. lisa argen is tracking the forecast for us and so far we're off to a cloudy start. >> yes, in some areas. here is a live look from walnut creek where it is nice and sunny. temperatures range from the mid to upper 50s mostly in the east bay, some of the valleys dropping into the upper 40s. we are looking at some fog to start, plenty of sunshine. comfortable temperatures, not too hot out there, but a bit of

there, the flag flopping around a little bit. we will get a check of the full accuweather from meteorologist lisa argen in a little bit. first, pride celebrations are underway on both coasts this weekend. in new york city they're taking on a special significance. 50 years ago a crowd at the stonewall inn took a stand for lgbtq rights. abc news reporter josh einiger has the story. ♪ >> reporter: they celebrated in the village, celebrated progress, 50 years since there really was nothing to celebrate at all. >> on one level, you know, it sort of made me sad but on another it is like -- how far we've come. >> progress is not guaranteed. progress is won by fighting back. >> reporter: this was the kickoff to pride weekend, itself the grand finale of an entire pride month. all of it, all of the flags and flamboyance, all of the rights to marry or just live a life, all of it started at the stonewall inn. >> every right and freedom that

they have today happened because of people brave enough of our elders the make it happen here, right here on this very spot. >> 1969 on this very day -- >> reporter: stacy lentz is co-owner of the stonewall where 50 years ago christopher street looked a lot different. that's the night something called the public morals squad, part of the nypd, raided the place and set off days of protests that gave birth to a movement. >> it was just wrong, plain and simple. it was wrong. >> reporter: the night of the stonewall raid jim waters was only 9 years old. now he's one of the police department's highest-ranking chiefs in charge of counterterrorism. and where once police officers were targeting the gay community, half a century later his cops are instead looking out. >> they are a high-value target, if you will, and so there are people that have been very vocal about not believing in what they believe and looking to do them harm. we're here to protect them. >> reporter: there are no specific or credible threats against any of the revelry in

new york this weekend, but the nypd is taking no chances with strategically placed blocker cars to protect the crowds to undercover cops within the crowds to camera and radiation detectors above the crowds. with more than 4 million people expected to attend the pride march on sunday, cops are taking no chances as they work to keep this landmark celebration safe. in new york's greenwich village, josh einiger, "abc 7 news." new developments on the canine flu outbreak in oakland. 200 infected dogs are being moved to a warehouse there. oakland animal services says the warehouse was cleaned and filled with kennels and play areas. pet food express has donated bowls and leashes and set up an emergency fund to help out with costs. the dogs will be gar quarantine between four and six weeks. omoinveralew ls io thgas g u sen a

gallon. anybody purchasing ammunition will be required to undergo an instant background check to search for felony convictions and customers -- companies rather must disclose whether customers are interacting with bots in online chats or actual humans. that's a few of the changes. to see the rest head to our website, abc7news.com. also in the east bay, after a 2 1/2 year delay the new embarcadero bridge in oakland is finally open to the public. the project was put in place in 2015 to retrofit the bridge for earthquakes. now the bridge meets all seismic safety standards and is taller with more sidewalk space. the bridge links jack london square and the brooklyn basin and is part of the san francisco bay trail. meteorologist lisa argen tracking the accuweather forecast. hi, lisa. >> hey, chris. this morning waking up to patchy fog. we will call it partly cloudy and some of the fog along the coast, also san francisco, oakland, the san mateo coast. looking at it to clear rather

quickly, and the sunup about 25 minutes ago. so we had some pretty nice pictures out there. in fact, from the roof camera you can see the compressed layer right here. highs today in the mid 60s. should be very pleasant for the pride celebrations. nearly identical for tomorrow. it is 53 in san francisco as well as san jose. 54, half moon bay. oakland checking in at 57. 53 down around the santa clara valley. you can see the fog here from the golden gate bridge where it will be partly sunny at our beaches. from sten son to bodega bay down to montero and half moon bay it will be cool but we will get some sun there. speaking of cool, how about the upper 40s santa rosa, napa and petaluma. certainly chili there with numbers about seven degrees cooler than yesterday. 51 in livermore. they are skiing at squaw today, four lifts open, a high of 60 degrees. they said they would stay open until the 4th and they certainly are. it should be a beautiful day there. mild to warm for pride weekend. minor ups and downs for the week

ahead. so if you are looking at any heat, it is not going to happen. just comfortable weather. and looking at typical weather for the 4th meaning we will get a little bit of fog we will be tracking for your fireworks, but throughout the morning hours you can see the strip being pulled away from the san mateo coast and at 5:00 it comes on back. we get some high clouds as well. waking up tomorrow with the high clouds, the low clouds are along the coast. once again, pulling back to the shoreline for some partly sunny conditions at our beaches and looking beautiful here in santa cruz. check it out with a lot of sunshine. numbers will be in the lower 70s so comfortable there, high clouds, breezy winds up to 20 miles per hour. about 63 at ocean beach. 65, half moon bay. if you are headed to pleasanton for the fair, low 70s noon time. upper 70s at 3:00 and mid 70s by about 6:00. a little breezy at 9:00, at 63 degrees. for today in the city, mid 60s starting out with some fog. almost identical tomorrow, maybe

"gma." it has been more than a month since the san francisco board of supervisors passed the ban on cashless stores. where do things stand today? our "7 on your side" michael finney has been keeping track of the progress. >> reporter: amazon go is still opening cashless stores in san francisco and still getting rave reviews, even if the shopping experience feels to some like it should be illegal. >> i felt weird. i felt like i was stealing from amazon. >> reporter: the board of supervisors passed and the mayor signed the brick and mortar cashless ban more than a month ago. it gave businesses 90 days to

comply. with 35 days now passed, no one seems in a hurry to implement sweet green after. amazon go before the ban. and amazon go after. no change inalthough cash is non a new york city amazon go location. there is still plenty of time to implement, but how is this going to work out? darin archer is with elastic path, a software company focusing on ecommerce. >> the research that we saw was that most folks are looking for that check out-less payment. the vast majority of them, three-quarters, almost three-quarters. but in that it is not so much that they want cashless, they just want the convenience factor. >> reporter: is this the modern version of the drive-up window? >> i think so. and, in fact, 72% on our survey said they wanted curb side pickup. >> reporter: darin says because, one, it is for convenience and not cashless, the san francisco

model of providing both will work. >> can you put those two together? >> reporter: i real. >> i really think so. not only do we need to put together, but i would challenge all of us in the industry and all of the retailers and brands to put it together in such a way it still goes back to the first goal. >> reporter: that goal? convenience. the law does carve out exceptions for pop-ups and food trucks. supervisor vallie brown introduced the legislation and saw it through to passage. she says professionals like attorneys don't have to accept cash either. >> but, i mean, have you ever met a lawyer that wouldn't take cash? i mean come on. so if you went in with your $10,000 and said, could you represent me, here is cash, i don't know a lawyer that would say, oh, no, i can't do that. >> reporter: i reached out to sweet green and amazon go. i have not heard back from sweet green. amazon go says it is adding cash starting in new york. i'm michael finney, "7 on your side." in mountain view a market that has been a community staple

>> news to build a better bay area. this is abc 7 mornings. thanks so much for waking up with us. i'm chris nguyen. we are off to a cloudy start across parts of the bay area. here is meteorologist lisa argen with a quick look at the weather conditions where you live. lisa, good morning to you. >> good morning, chris. a look towards the east bay from the emeryville camera. you see the bank of low clouds. it is pretty compressed but that means we will get into sunshine pretty soon. here in oakland, 57 degrees. it is 49 in morgan hill. check out the numbers from the north bay here. this is a view from san rafael, but numbers in the upper 40s, so it is cool there. in fact, even into the east bay temperatures are cooler than we were yesterday, so we're starting out with mostly clear sky, and that what has allowed for the temperatures to drop off. as we go through about 10:00, we are sunny. mid and upper 60s for most of you and then the warmth comes

into our east bay. low 80s there. still the coast and a few high clouds later on today. chris. >> thank you, lisa. president trump will be in south korea to meet with president moon jae-in. he wrapped up a news conference at the g-20 with the president of china. the president's visit with world leaders not only focused on trade. a possible visit to north korea is reportedly in the cards. here is an news reporter karen travers. >> reporter: president trump sitting down with president xi for a high-stakes meeting. >> i look forward to working with you, as you know. we've had an excellent relationship. >> reporter: with trade talks stalled and a threat of new tariffs on the table, the presidents were looking to make a deal. later, mr. trump said the two sides declared a truce for now. >> for at least the time being we're not going to be lifting tariffs. >> reporter: president trump making news on twitter, announcing he would like to meet

kim jong-un at the dmz while visiting south korea on sunday. i asked the president about that during his meeting with the saudi crown prince. >> all i did was put out a feeler if he would like to meet. he sent me a very beautiful birthday card. >> reporter: the president said if a meeting with kim happened it could be brief, even just two minutes. >> very receptive. he responded and so we'll see. >> reporter: north korea called the president's offer a, quote, very interesting suggestion. and the president at his press conference, asked about his meeting with russian president vladimir putin. >> i thought it was really a tremendous discussion. i think they would like to do trade with the united states and they have great product. >> he was also asked whether he spoke with prince about the murder of journalist khashoggi. >> they have taken it very seriously and will continue to. >> reporter: karen travers, abc news, traveling with the president in japan. san jose congresswoman zoe laughlin is vowing to secure our

elections. she says it is in response to the president refusing to hold russia responsible for the elections. >> house democrats will defend ica'sity a all threat both foreign and domestic. the saft act represents an urgent, critical step to securing our election infrastructure and protecting the integrity of the ballot and our democracy. >> in the democratic weekly address the congresswoman talks about the securing america's federal elections act. house democrats passed the bill which would upgrade the security of voting systems across the country. that includes replacing outdated voting machines and requiring paper ballot voting. happening today, oregon senate republicans plan to return to work after a nine-day walkout. republicans shut down the oregon senate because they wanted to block a climate change bill. the head of the senate republicans say they will be back to work today because ers hpass budget bills.

he believes they can complete that work by tomorrow night's deadline. as the bay area celebrates pride weekend we want to highlight the people that haven't been afraid to stand up for change. andy damian corea is a gay man who left his native mexico to start a healing process. he found a new life he wanted here in san francisco. "abc 7 news" reporter lyanne melendez tells his story. >> it was my secret. i cannot share with nome. i like to play with the barbies with the kids, with the girls. i wasn't allowed to be myself. >> reporter: telling his story, andy damian corea took us back to his native mexico where being different in a small town was terrifying. >> they tarpted, you know, attacking, saying things in spanish about my sexual orientation. >> reporter: even his parents were not accepting of the life he wanted to have. >> mom, dad, i'm gay. my mama started crying. >> reporter: he says his father wanted to change him, physically

abusing him. >> a few times, but i forgive him. >> his b in his early 20s. he received a scholarship to study hotel management in washington, d.c. >> just seeing people happy and coming here and seeing different kind of gays, all color, all flavors. >> reporter: and he knew he could never return to his town in mexico. his friends reassured him. >> no, absolutely not, you should not come here. there is no future for us. >> reporter: after moving to san francisco, he applied for asylum. he told an immigration court about an affair he had with someone high in the ranks of the mexican police who hid his sexual orientation. >> obviously he didn't want to say he was gay. he has kids. he's gonna kill me. >> reporter: when the immigration judge welcomed him to america he knew he had won his case. he has never been back. his mother still calls him to ask if he is dating. girls. his father has accepted andy's

isn't this gorgeous from the roof camera. you see some of the fog floating by but still sunshine in the city, waking up to numbers in the 50s this afternoon. about 56 downtown. for tomorrow, pretty similar. pride celebrations, just fantastic weather wise. as we take a look further outside there, you can see coit tower. it was lighted in pink there morning, lit up there in celebration of pride for the weekend. if you are headed to pleasanton this afternoon, it should be nice out there. temperatures will be climbing into the 70s. we start out noon time mid 70s, and then by 1:00, 2:00, upper 70s to near 80, going for a high of about 81 at 4:00 and 79 at 5:00 in the afternoon. so it could be much, much hotter there, you know that. pleasant for this afternoon. as we look at the beach, who wants to go? save me a spot. gorgeous out there. santa cruz where numbers will be in the low 70s with that fog in the distance there. what a beautiful start to your weekend, right? we have had the heat and the

cool temperatures as of late and things are just shaping up quite well for pride weekend and into the 4th of july. look at that marine layer compress. we are in san jose right now. temperatures are in the low 50s. 57 in oakland. 53 in san jose and san francisco. 54 at the coast with 49 in morgan hill. you can see the marine layer here just at the surface, compressed. maybe slightly below 1,000 feet. you can see the tops of some of the towers there with 47 in santa rosa, napa and petaluma. with a clear sky in the north bay, it is 57 in concord. livermore, 51. another pretty shot of the low cloud deck. this will burn back to the coast. mild to warm for pride weekend. minor ups and downs for the week ahead. we will warm up a little bit and cool back, but for the 4th of july we will have some fog to track. in the next couple of hours you will notice temperatures will warm into the 70s in the south bay. we'll get into a few high clouds. 82, los gatos. 80, san jose.
