green on the traffic maps. one exception getting out of the central valley. stop and go several miles. westbound 205 to 58012 mi, 12 m an hour pap quick check outside. san mateo bridge. westbound 92 light and no major issues so far today. >> sounds good. thank you. happening now, you may notice how expensive it is to fill up your tank, because today gas will increase another 6 cents a gallon because of the state's gas tax. >> of course, the fourth of july weekend is around the corner. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live in walnut creek. good morning, amy. >> reporter: hi, good morning. yeah. the new tax is now in effect. here we are on july the 1st and it gives california a new title. ready for this one? we now pay more in taxes and fees for gas than any other state. just edge out of pennsylvania, alaska and missouri have the lowest gas taxes in the country. we are now at 47 cents per

gallon in taxes. the plan is for this money to pay for mass transit programs and road repairs. it is expected to bring in about $5 billion a year, but some lawmakers are already saying that isn't enough, because of years of under funding. the governor's office says 400 transportation projects are now in the works. the american society of civil engineers just gave california a grade of d for its road conditions saying that they are some of the worst in the country. so it is definitely time. there is a need for these projects to get underway. reporting live in walnut creek for abc 7 uz. up to developing news. president trump is back at the white house this morning after a four-day trip to asia. >> while there the first sitting u.s. president to step on north korean soil and describing his meeting as "wonderful."

65 people are hurt including nine children. both the taliban and islamic state operate in the capital and the attack comes as the taliban and u.s. are holding talks in qatar. commuters will pay more to ride public transit starting today. the fare hikes you should know about san francisco muni cash fairs for adults from $2.75 to $3. adult ash fares from $2.35 to $2.50 ap ferry riders paying roughly 3% more for trips. for example, $7 jumps to $7.20. today ushering new laws in california. people buying ammunition have to go through background checks. california is the first state to impose that requirement. the state already has some of the strictest gun laws in country. another law called the video and audio recording disclosure directly impacts law enforcement. that requires the release of recordings from body-worn

issue here on the bay bridge commute. westbound 80 just before you get to treasure island sounding like four to five vehicles involved in crash and the four right lanes blocked now. just happened. chp on on the scene yet getting multiple calls in telling them about this collision. we'll check back here in a few moments with more information confirmed by then. bay bridge toll plaza looking a bit busier as well. we have the carpool lanes open. no metering lights but the crash on the bridge long, that will turn on the metering lights earlier. update on that bay bridge commute coming up. >> thanks. in the east bay a big announcement expected today on a safety project in oakland's chinatown. oakland's department of transportation says it is redesigned intersection to help cut down on crashes. that intersection at madison and 8th street near the lake merit b.a.r.t. cutting crossing distances to half and proactively prevent any

"wonderful." he says the u.s. and north korea will resume talks to try to get to a nuclear deal. six, another beautiful day on the way. low clouds and fog to start then 60s, 70s and 80s. all right. a look at road for number seven. we were just extremely quiet up to a few minutes ago pap crash on the bay bridge now westbound 80 before treasure island. four to five vehicles involvedsounds light the four right lanes blocked. working on getting a visual. plan on delays. 5:15. a man from the bay missing in the grand canyon he was last seen friday on a river trip in grand canyon national park. the national park service workers say he was reported missing after he went for a day hike in an area known as the narrows. grand canyon rangers are searching that area. a family friend says his wife and two sons are also there to help in the search. a survivoyear's camp fire in paradise returned home for the first time to where her house once stood.

shirley williamson and her husband called the property along castle drive home for 20 years. crews now removed the debris from the williamson's home and other buildings. take a listen. shirley scribed why she didn't come back until this weekend. >> easier for me. had i come here and seen all the rubble and everything that was here, it would have been a lot more devastating. >> she and her husband escaped the fire storm with about 15 minutes to spare. they now live in north carol kale with their daughter and grandchildren. and garage doors sold in california must include a backup battery now. that law passed in light of the north bay wildfires in 2017. tragically several died because they couldn't get their garage doors open after power went out. a major issue focusing on, housing. soaring rents caught the attention of vallejo as the city looks for a solution. tenants at several promise in

>> right. because the state gas tax goes up about 6 cents per gallon starting today. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield live in walnut creek to explain where the money is going. good morning, amy. >> reporter: hi. good morning. yes, six more cents gallon. drivers we talked to this morning are shaking their heads. this went into affect today and will pay for road repairs and mass transit programs. it is projected to bring in a little more than $5 billion in the next year. drivers we talked to this morning are frustrated. especially since the price of gas here is already higher than the rest of the country, and now this. >> just another day in california unfortunately. the national average is like, $2.70 something. unfortunate that california's almost $1 more already. so -- you know, i'm sure -- none of

the voters approved of this, but, you know -- it's unfortunate. you know? so nobody's happy about paying more for gas, i guess. >> reporter: lawmakers are already saying this increase isn't enough to pay for all of the repairs that need to be done, but it is going to kick-start improvements. the governor's office says there are about 400 transportation projects in the works. reporting live in in in and paying more to cross the golden gate bridge. non-fastrak tolls up from $8 positive $8.35. drivers in the pay as you go program payp fm $8. why the fare hikes? expected to raise $100 manage over five years to cover an expected deficit and improve golden gate bus and ferry

service. ferry riders see a 25 cent fare hike starting today. bus fares going up by varying amounts as well. happening now, final preparations underway for partial reopening of the sales force transit center in san francisco. actually set to open in less than 30 minutes. crews tested the emergency public address system last week and the rooftop park area reopens today. still no bus service yet and still no clear date when that service awill resume. nine months from a cracked steel beam caused it to close. and carrying people from the sales force plaza two stories up to the rooftop park. developers estimate 45 million people will use that gondola every year and service starts at 8:00 this morning. stay good-bye to plasticfra. a new law restricting plastics starts today. replacing them with paper or natural fiber straws.

with several items. the owner of learning express believe the thieves disabled the alarm system and cut through a door and damaged displays early saturday morning targeting items like lig like lego play sets. >> it's actually very devastating. very. i already -- so many people wanted to come in and shop this morning and they saw what happened and everybody was so sorry. >> learning express remains closed while the owner cleans up the damage caused by the burglars and the store hopes to reopen by the middle of the week. it is 5:44. pride festivities made for a busy weekend here in san francisco. yesterday was the 49th annual pride parade along market street celebrating the lgbtq community and its parade nearly an hour. demonstrators chained themselves together and refused to leave. our abc reporter has more.
