4:00 pm
in a statement, facebook said, in part, a package delivered to one of our mail rooms was deemed suspicious. we evacuated four buildings and are conducting a thorough investigation. fire officials say the security machinery displayed two positive tests, but an open air test came back negative. >> everything is contained and quarantined in the building now, which is great. and the fact that we have no signs or symptoms with anybody is great. >> reporter: according to the federal centers for disease control and prevention, sarin is a chemical warfare agent that is clear, colorless, odorless and tasteless. and back here live, fire officials are now working with the fbi. they were called in for assistance, which is protocol in these types of cases. we're live in menlo park. i'm chris nguyen, abc7 news. >> all right, chris, we appreciate the report. now, as chris mentioned, sarin is a manmade nerve agent with no odor in its purist form, but it can ee vap wait into a gas and
4:01 pm
spread into the environment. m respiratory failure. sarin was used in two terror attacks in japan in 1994 and '95. the latter of which killed 13 people when the gas was released in the tokyo subway system. >> now, we first sent out the alert about the possible exposure at 12:10 p.m. through our abc7 news mobile app. it is one way to stay on top of breaking news as it happens. just be sure to enable those push alerts. >> the dust is still settling after the warriors completely overhauled their roster in a matter of hours yesterday. the flurry of moves left lots of heads spinning. it started just about 3:00 p.m. when word got out that kevin durant was brooklyn bound and was going to sign with the nets. but the warriors had a response that resulted in andre iguodala getting traded to the memphis grizzlies. they agreed to a deal that will land them an u star, deangelo russell. to make room, iggy had to go and the warriors may not be done
4:02 pm
yet. >> yeah, did you follow all that, right? the roster changes certainly brought out a lot of emotions with the fans. iguodala mvp and the warriors first finals run, durant then, of course, brought the team to new heights. now, though, a new group will be headed across the bay to the new chase center. so joining us right now on set is abc7 sports producer casey pratt. you were the head of all the after the game #dubson7 coverage. where do we even begin with this? maybe we start with why did k.d. choose to leave in the first place? >> yeah, complete chaos starting last night. i think kevin durant left the warriors because he wanted to build something new. he wanted to be with his best buddies. he's joining a bunch of guys like kyrie irving, for example, that he is really close with and so i think that this is just a way that he can do something that truly mim turned down a lo. he left over $50 million on the table. if i was kevin durant, i would have taken the five years, $221
4:03 pm
of flack when he left o.k.c. now maybe happiness is tops on his agenda, finding a club where he's like, i'm one of the cool kids, i'm on the in crowd. i'm cool with that. >> he took less money to help andrej iguodala sign. that's his thing. he's got sponsorship deals. he makes a ton of money on his contract. so he's doing just fine. >> financially. >> of course. >> we get deangelo russell if he stays. if we don't trade him away. what does that mean for the warriors? >> i think what that means is you're seeing the warriors going younger. this is a 23-year-old guy. he averaged over 20 points per game last season, so he is a scorer. that's what the warriors need, because even if they were able to sign kevin durant, he wasn't going to be able to play last year. >> not play for a while. >> so jet using a kevin durant and immediately picking up another all-star shows you how ahead of the game the warriors can be. so whether they trade this guy or not, they do need him right
4:04 pm
now. and if he stays and klay thompson comes back about mid year next year, they can move him to forward. they'll have a really chase cenr without star power. they need the star power. >> i love the optimism with this. we talked about all -- it's almost like a chess game, right, all of the moving and strategizing. let's talk about the benefits, who benefits the most out of all of this. >> you know, it's hard to say this, but the person that may benefit the most is draymond green because had the warriors signed stephen curry, they just gave klay thompson the max. if they signed kevin durant to the max, we're talking about a potential $1.6 billion with a b dollars it would have taken to also sign draymond green. so now you're looking at a situation where draymond green isn't going to be the odd man out. he's protected now with that money coming off the books. >> right. what about k.d.'s legacy, what do you think we'll miss most? >> i think that kevin durant not only deserves his number being retired, which the warriors already said they're going to
4:05 pm
do, which is awesome, i would give him a trophy. i would give him a statue, i would give him everything he wanted. this guy really sacrificed a year of his prime to come back and give it a go in the nba finals, to try to give the warriors a third straight title. i mean, he laid it all out there. >> basically the person in charge is listening, casey wants to do a trophy, whatever. >> give him everything. >> a lot of props the way he handled himself in the finals to sure, all along. >> thanks, casey. >> thank you. >> all right. over on the east bay, the city of oakland has made important safety changes to an intersection in chinatown. abc7 news was at 8th and madison streets where you can see there, look closely, at new plastic posts and paint. it's what the city calls a swift and effective intersection safety project. >> this set of plastic and paint is a low-cost and fast intervention that will make this really kind of complicated intersection so much safer. not just for cars, but for
4:06 pm
bikes, for pedestrians, for wheelchairs, for baby strollers, for those crazy scooters that we see everywhere. >> the city says the project will reduce racial disparities in pedestrian crashes. the city says 30% of streets in mostly asian areas fall on the pedestrian high injury network. >> california drivers are facing a little more pain at the pump today. a 5.6 cent per gallon state gas tax increase went into effect overnight. it's the late est hike from a 2017 law by the legislature to raise money for road and mass transit programs. you might remember the state gas tax went up 12 cents a gallon last november. drivers are not that happy about the increase, but guess what? voters last year rejected an effort to repeal the law. >> say good-bye to plastic straws. a new law restricting plastic food wear in san francisco takes effect today as well. restaurants are expected to provide customers with paper or other natural fiber straws.
4:07 pm
only people with a disability or medical need can request a plastic straw. plastic stirrers and tooth picks are banned. other food accessories like napkins and condiments are available on request. >> the next red-flag warning issued by the national weather service will come with exactly that in the city of santa rosa. the fire department says it will literally fly a red flag to signal the dangerous conditions when they happen. a red-flag warning is issued when there is an increased risk for fire danger due to warm temperatures. very low humidity and strong winds. several fire agencies across sonoma county have implemented this. >> wait, stop, it's thursday. i know, somebody is getting ahead of us here. >> let's not make it later. let's make it earlier. >> exactly. >> all right. taking a live look outside from the exploratorium camera, you can see a gorgeous day out on the bay. but, of course, we are looking ahead to the holiday week. let's get a check now.
4:08 pm

4:10 pm
were being held with their children in prison camps. we look back on that time in history now and we say, why didn't people do more to step up and stop it? >> reporter: sarah along with other moms protested against the border funding bill approved last week. >> the demps in the house of representatives passed the senate's version of the appropriations bill a last week, but basically gave a whole bunch more money for the border with no strings attached. >> reporter: the $4.6 billion package continues to be controversial. so much so the house and senate agreed none of the funds will be used to fund the border wall, but to provide shelter and food for migrant detainees. no one from the speaker's office came out, but a statement from a representative stated house demps will continue to confront the president over the harmful policies that manufactured the crisis and endangered children, families in the administration's custody. from the $4.6 billion, more than 1 billion will go towards shelter and feeding migrant detainees. and almost 3 billion to care for unaccompanied migrant children.
