$800 per day for failing to leave the country. >> abc's mona kosar abdi has the new details. good morning, mona. >> reporter: good morning, kenneth. good morning, janai. protesters wanted to bring nationwide attention and put pressure on congress to address the immigration issue. but the immigration battle between the white house and democrats continues to escalate. thousands of protesters taking to the streets of major cities across the country. [ chanting ] holding signs that read, close the camps. the nationwide movement comes after recent accounts of inhumane and unsafe conditions at migrant border facilities. >> we need emergency action. >> reporter: democratic lawmakers recounting stories of migrants sleeping on concrete floors and rooms without running water after a visit to two facilities on monday. massachusetts congresswoman ayanna pressley on cnn sharing her experience. >> i asked the doctor at that cbp facility did he think this was a public health violation. >> reporter: and this morning the department of homeland security's own inspector general

is warning of, quote, dangerous overcrowding sharing these pictures showing some adults packed into standing room only cells for up to a week. and children with no access to showers and limited clothing. dhs responding saying it treats those in its custody, quote, with the utmost dignity and respect. the report comes as a federal judge blocks the trump administration's policy to keep asylum seekers detained pending cases finding it unconstitutional to deny them a bond hearing. meanwhile the president is doubling down on his efforts to crack down on illegal immigration threatening to conduct massive deportation raids in several major cities following the fourth of july holiday if democrats refuse to change asylum laws. many of the target locations, sanctuary cities, a designation the president said on fox news he blames for contributing to, quote, filth in those cities. >> it's destroying their city. it's not what our country is all about. >> reporter: meanwhile a new

request from house speaker nancy pelosi. she's now asking president trump to impose a 90-day limit on detaining children and wants homeland security to finalize standards for medical care and hygiene. but so far no time line from the white house on those requests. and abc news has confirmed that i.c.e. officials have begun issuing fines of up to $500,000 to undocumented immigrants who fail to comply with the deportation proceedings, but, janai and kenneth, a lot of immigration advocates and their lawyers say their clients simply say they don't have the money to pay those fine. >> of course, we saw those protests across the country yesterday. mona, thank you. we turn to the navy s.e.a.l. acquitted of war crimes. edward gallagher was accused of killing an isis prisoner in iraq. in a courtroom bombshell, a fellow s.e.a.l. admitted to the killing. gallagher says he feels vindicated, but overnight his wife spoke out fiercely condemning the government claiming it's been terrorizings her husband for months. >> i think this whole thing is disgusting. >> reporter: this morning the wife of a navy s.e.a.l. acquitted of murdering an

isis prisoner is demanding someone be held responsible. >> his name has been slammed and slandered and dragged through the mud and i think this vindication i hope will be a lesson learned to everybody, and we need to afford the benefit of the doubt to our war heroes who we send over there to fight these evils. >> reporter: chief edward gallagher was accused of war crimes during a tour in iraq including murdering an isis fighter seen wounded in this iraqi tv video. fellow navy s.e.a.l. corey scott who was granted immunity in the case testified that he saw gallagher stab that teen, but in a shocking twist scott also testified that he, not gallagher, killed the fighter by plugging his airway to prevent him from being tortured by iraqi forces saying i knew he was going to die anyway. after just six hours of deliberations, a jury found gallagher not guilty on the more serious charges of murder and attempted murder. >> i'm happy and i'm thankful and i thank god. i'm thankful for my legal team and my wife. >> reporter: his defense team argued over the course of the two-week trial that the case was built on false accusations from

disgruntled sailors. >> this is not a murder. this is a mutiny. this is a group of young disgruntled sailors that didn't like being told they were cowards, and so they decided to conspire to take down the chief. >> reporter: gallagher's wife stood by him throughout the trial insisting he is innocent. she accused the government of terrorizing her family. >> there's a reason that we started this war, and we need to finish it, and we don't finish it by throwing away our war fighters. >> gallagher was convicted of posing with the body of the dead prisoner. that could mean a four-month prison sentence, but he's already served seven months behind bars, so his lawyers believe he could walk free as soon as today. the fbi is investigating what could be a major breach of national security. an air force contractor is accused of taking home more than 1,000 pages of classified documents. he worked at a facility in ohio that helps deal with threats involving missiles and cyberattacks. the fbi wants to know if he shared the documents. at this point no charges have been filed. we're learning more about president trump's salute to america's celebration for july 4th.tary hardware

is moving into place including two bradley fighting vehicles as well as tanks and a stealth bomber. but abc's martha raddatz reports some say the salute is sending the wrong message. >> reporter: this is a time when there are concerns about the military being politicized and some i have talked to say there is a whiff of politics in this. the head of iraq and afghanistan veterans of america saying this has the potential to divide and polarize and is the very opposite of what this holiday should exemplify. >> "the washington post" reports the national park service is diverting $2.5 million to pay for the event, which is separate from the annual live concert at the other end of the national mall by the capitol. well, it looks like the race for president is getting tighter. a new poll of democrats found senator kamala harris is now in a virtual tie with former vice president joe biden. the quinnipiac poll was taken after last week's debate. and president trump may be trying to upstage former special counsel robert mueller. the president is now planning to hold a campaign rally in north

carolina on july 17th. that, as you may know, is the same day mueller's testifying before congress about the russia investigation. the man who saved chrysler in the 1980s has died. lee iacocca introduced some of detroit's best-selling and most important vehicles. he ran ford when the company introduced the mustang, and he led chrysler when it developed the minivan and suv. his chrysler commercials made him an icon in the industry. lee iacocca battled parkinson's disease. he was 94. turning now to the weather, it's going to be a summer scorcher for much of the country today, so now let's take a look at your wednesday forecast. good morning. we're talking more heat and humidity across the southeast as we head into our wednesday. potentially record-breaking heat from georgia into the carolinas. we've got some of that heat and humidity expanding into the northeast as well. it's going to lead to some spotty storms across the mid-atlantic back into the ohio river valley. when it comes to what it's going

now to the growing mystery over a mother of five from connecticut missing for more than a month. her estranged husband is speaking out in a new interview. fotis dulos is charged with evidence tampering in connection with the disappearance of jennifer dulos. he's free on $500,000 bond and wears an ankle monitor. while speaking to wnbc, he urged the public not to rush to judgment. >> you know, i know what i've done, and i know what i haven't done, so i have to stand and fight and hope that the truth is going to come out. i had my differences with jennifer like many people do when they go through a marriage. it didn't work out for us, but that doesn't mean that i wish her ill in any way. >> reporter: police say they have surveillance images showing a man who they believe is dulos dropping off bags containing his wife's blood-stained clothing. he did not discuss any such evidence during the interview. his lawyer says dulos has an alibi.

one person has died after an explosion destroyed a home in charlotte, north carolina. the blast left a massive crater and crews pulled a woman's body from the home last night. one of the owners of the home, a cardiologist, was hurt. he managed to call 911 while trapped under the debris. no word on what caused the blast. the fbi is investigating threats made against organizers of the up coming straight pride parade in boston. envelopes filled will glitter were sent to their homes. they claim that's harassment and add they are not anti-gay but feel heterosexuals are, quote, an oppressed majority. that parade is set for august. the dairy industry is trying to get martha teenagers to drink milk so it's turning to coffee for help. it's providing grant money to help schools sell more coffee in hopes it will boost milk consumption. a high school in north dakota recently got a 5,000 grant which paid for an espresso machine that makes lattes. each latte has eight ounces of milk. the kidding are getting lattes

making news now at 4:27. people running for their lives after two people are shot at the tanforan mall in san bruno. the shooter is still on the loose. >> and because of all of this, spilling into chaos system wide and police are searching for the suspects on trains as you could see, the san bruno station next to the mall shut down. and commuters are left stuck after police close off the station parking garage. some people have no choice but to leave their cars there overnight. good morning, welcome to this wednesday, july 3rd. >> i'll tell you what is happening there at the mall. but first we check in with meteorologist mike nicco. >> good morning. you'll notice more cloud cover outside this morning and that will deepen a little bit. the cooling trend that we've been living through the first few days of july and look at the gray, with a problem along the

san jose firefighters had to rescue a man after a rollover crash. a pickup truck and car collided on metcalf road last night. the truck rolled off the freeway. one person inside of the truck got out and another had to be helped out and the three people in the other vehicle weren't hurt. chp officers think the collision may have been caused by distracted driving. is this this morning san bruno police are expected to update us on the terrifying shooting at the tanforan mall that sent many running for cover. >> two teens were shot before 4:00 p.m. and they were targeted and police are still looking for the gunman. that person may have escaped through b.a.r.t. the parking lot at the mall is back open so shonners -- shoppers could get their cars. the doors will stay closed until 10:00. people dropped their belongings as they ran for safety.

amy hollyfield is live at the scene. >> reporter: still no arrests have been made. police do not think these were random shootings. they do think that they were targeted. the shooting was reported near the salon and t-mobile around 4:00 yesterday afternoon. two people were shot. they were juveniled and taken to the hospital. shoppers describe a chaotic scene as people ran to get away while others sheltered in place. >> people were just running, just countless people running full speed ahead. it looked like a race. a marathon. >> our manager decided to lockdown the store and we grabbed people and we're coming into the store from the left side of the mall and my manager was pulling people in and right when we got our last person in who was a young boy, we locked the doors and turned off the lights. >> police
