4:42 pm
for this part of the bay area. >> yeah, nationwide gas prices are down $0.19 from last year, but california just bumped up its gas tax by $0.06 on monday, so as usual, still expensive here. >> now, whether you're planning on traveling this week or next month, vacations, that can really add up. >> how can you save money on hotels? 7 on your side's michael finney is here with help. >> travel app hopper recently conducted a study on hotel costs, and the mistakes people make when booking a hotel room. so joining me now with more on this is lee anna corwin from hopper. let me start with what's the biggest mistake we make? >> i think the number one mistake people make is booking at the very last minute. there are so many myths out there, but the one people seem to hold onto is that they have to wait until the day before to get a really good deal. at hopper, what we found is that it really depends on where you're traveling. so if you're going to a big city, somewhere that typically has, you know, a lot of business
4:43 pm
travelers, you can find a really good deal one to two weeks in advance. so if you're willing to be a little bit flexible with where you stay, you can wait until closer to your actual, you know, check-in date. however, if you're going somewhere, you know, like an island or the beaches, somewhere that's more of a leisure destination, you actually will get a better deal two to three months in advance. >> i thought the point of waiting until the last minute was if it's an empty room, they'll give you a deal because it's better to have your 50 bucks than no bucks at all? >> yeah, so that definitely does still apply for those kind of last minute rate filling deals that you can find. however, not every hotel is going to participate in that keend kind of program, and you can actually find more options if you give yourself one to two weeks. however, of course, you can still find some of those really great deals, you just need to be super flexible if you want to wait until the day before you go. >> and real flexible means you may not even be in the city.
4:44 pm
you'll be on the edge of the city, right? isn't that what that really means? >> exactly, or maybe you're going to get a room next to the elevator that's going to make noise all night. that kind of thing is what you're setting yourself up for. >> if you're getting a cheap room, you're not getting the best room. >> unfortunately no. >> that makes sense. six weeks, a couple of months if you're booking a recreational destination, a city about two weeks. >> exactly. >> is that fair to say? >> yes. >> okay. how do i get the best deal? do i have to call them directly? can i go through a third-party? what's the best way? >> there are a number of ways to get a good deal. definitely i would recommend giving the hotel a call if you're comfortable with that. what a lot of people don't realize is that there are a lot of unpublished rates that are only available for certain eligible parties. so let's say if you're in a certain geographic location or you give the hotel a call and want to book directly, different things like that, so some of those are going to be available to you if you make that phone call. however, some, you know, you
4:45 pm
won't find, pack anlaged rates, instance, that are going to be divided so different services are out there to kind of help you match those, definitely if you work through a travel agent, they're going to be able to find those rates that you're eligible for, or there are services like hopper, for instance, that will track all of those eligible rates and match you up with the ones they know you can get. >> what kind of savings are we talking about here? it used to be you could pay a lot, pay a little. it's kind of squashed down, right? >> it is a little narrower than it was in the past. you can still save on average $61 a night if you book at the right time. people don'trealize. you do havelss as airlines. >> lee anna corwin from hopper with some great advice. thank you. >> thank you. >> all right, michael, much appreciated. a record breaking home sale in los angeles to tell you about. a mansion built in 1991 for the late producer aaron spelling and his widow has just been sold for
