because it is truly remarkable. s move o breaking news. that is the grass fire we've been following. it's burned 80 to southern alameda county and san joaquin county. >> sky 7 is overhead right now. you can see there is plenty of fuel for this fire, of course. this is carnegie state park, a popular site for off roading. >> firefighters are on the ground, and helicopters have been dropping water and retardant, the retardant is the red you see on the hills. fire crews are calling this the hollow fire. it broke out around 3:30 this afternoon. cal fire says the fire is now 30% contained. we'll continue to bring you any new information as we get it right here on abc 7 news and our news app. the san bernardino police department is releasing new images of yesterday's shooting at the shops at tanforan. melanie woodrow is live with new details in the search for suspects in this case. melanie. >> reporter: san bruno police

say that an officer on the first floor of the mall heard gunshots coming from the second floor and called for backup. that gunfire between two groups that were fighting. now two victims are in serious condition, and two gunmen still on the loose. >> two teens shot inside tanforan mall, one in the stomach, one in the leg. >> well, basically everything unraveled right in front of my store in a way. first i heard like pop pop pop, it must have been six or eight shots and i knew right away it's a weapon, not fireworks. >> art stein ducked down inside his store. >> mostly i was thinking whether it's a terrorist act or something else, and if it's going to stop, you know, because it was pop pop pop. >> reporter: a fear felt by other mall employees as well. >> i was really scared. >> reporter: people running by this ice cream shop, the owner pulling customers in, then pulling down the gate before armed officers came charging r

>> close the gate and go back inside and hide. >> reporter: as employees hid, police cleared hundreds of people from the mall and began an all-out search for the suspects, including at this nearby marshall's where dozens of people ran from the store. today mall shoppers returned. >> it's a sad situation. >> reporter: this bullet hole remains while a maintenance worker covered up two others today, reminders of what happened here and how much worse some feared it could have >> reporter: investigators are going through surveillance video looking for images of the suspects. you can imagine it was so chaotic here yesterday, people were running from this mall fearing for their lives and left their belongings behind. police say they can pick up their belongings at the police department. live in san bruno, melanie woodrow abc 7 news. >> all right, melanie, thanks so much. let's go back to the story we touched on at the top of the broadcast. a terrifying dog attack in half moon bay. the whole thing caught on video.

>> that's right. neighbors have been complaining about this person, the neighbor for years. we told you several families have restraining orders, but liz kreutz has been reporting on this and says nothing has been done. >> in this charming, quiet community in half moon baldy family says they live in fear. >> i don't feel safe here. i don't feel safe for my family. i don't feel safe for the community. >> michelle and her son luca were on a walk friday with their dog when their neighbor's dog attacked them. >> it's a 90 to 100 pound dog, and it's running straight at me, and i know it has a history of being aggressive. >> knowing that history, michelle had started recording on her phone when they first saw the dog. within seconds it was running towards them. and in this moment she dropped it. >> get that dog away from me! >> michelle says the dog bit her on the finger and scratched her right calf. >> in that moment i'm thinking

it's my life or my dog's or my mom's. >> despite their cries for help, michelle and luca say their neighbor was laughing. eventually he grabbed his dog and pulled him away. >> no apology. >> no, nothing, said nothing to us. >> reporter: michelle is shaken up but not surprised. she said for years this neighbor and his dog have terrorized the community. she says her family is one of six to have a restraining order against him. mike ellafano is another for these reasons. >> there are threats, the altercations, the continued harassment. >> neighbors told me they have reported many of these incidents to police. i called animal control. they said they could not comment on this recent incident because they are actively investigating. >> the neighbor was not home when we knocked, but michelle says he did turn his dog in to animal control during the investigation. >> you were also saying you actually feel for his dog. >> the dog is doing what it's

been trained to do. it's not the dog's fault. >> still, she's asking for something to be done, but even that she says is terrifying. >> there is going to be retribution. that dog means everything to him. >> reporter: liz kreutz abc 7 news. >> the only white supremacist charge in a giant fight at the state capital back in 2016 was sentenced to four years in prison today. william plainer pleaded no contest in april to an assault charge. prosecutors say he used a pole to knock a woman unconscious, and this is video of the melee. the fight broke out between members of the white nationalists traditionist worker party and counter protesters. 14 people were hurt including two who were stabbed f. three counter protesters will face charges this fall. california has become the first state to ban racial discrimination against people based on their natural hair style. governor newsome signed the crown act into law today. the act applies to workplaces and schools.

senator holly mitchell of los angeles sponsored the bill. she said it's all about giving people choice about how to wear their hair, but now they can do what they want without fear. >> whether you straighten your hair, whether you choose to wear it natural, my choice of how i wear my hair shouldn't impact my ability to get a job, keep a job or be promoted. if they choose to straighten their hair, that's fine. the point is the choice should be protected. >> a couple other states are now taking similar action to prevent discrimination based on hair. in the east bay building a better bay area by finding solutions to one of the region's biggest problems. too little housing for the homeless. the city of oakland is opening another tough shed village. the city calls them community cabins. they're designed to provide short-term shelter and to connect people with resources to get them into permanent housing. wayne freedman has more on these new accommodations. >> reporter: they were never designed to be home sweet homes, this community of cabins at 27th and northgate, but postal worker

carmen randall will tell you this place beneath the freeway beach, the tent in which she used to live. >> does this program work? >> yes, it does. >> today oakland opened a fifth community cabin site as an alternative to homeless camps. >> we cannot force anyone to move in here, however if they decline the invitation, we will have them move outside of the area. >> reporter: this community cabin site in a dusty noisy caltrans maintenance yard beneath the 880 interchange will provide housing for some 76 people who had been living in tents nearby. it's the latest step at a social experiment, that oakland's sarah bedford has been working in places like portland and seattle. >> i talked to people who said i could never have gone from my tent straight into a housing first unit. i needed this interim step. >> reporter: each of these units looks a lot like a tough shed with a window and a bed. >> we provide wrap around services for mental health,

substance abuse, job training. >> this is a moral imperative. people are not healthy without shelter. >> reporter: in oakland tonight, roughly 3,000 people will sleep on the streets. carmen randallson is grateful she's no longer one of them. >> when you look back on this 10 or 15 years from now, will it be a good memory or a bad memory? >> it will be a good memory because something good came out of it. that's a good thing. >> reporter: in oakland, wayne freedman abc 7 news. a local youth sports group that's selling fireworks to raise funds is under extra pressure following a theft. abc 7 news was in petaluma where monday night someone walked off with a big box of fireworks that was on display just outside of the stand they had set up. those stolen fireworks are worth $500. the petaluma panther's football and cheer teams are on the hook for the cost. >> they just walked off and we didn't notice being out in front that it was gone until later. it was very unfortunate. >> the teams rely on the sale of

fireworks to help pay for equipment. the gilroy high school wrestling team is hoping to rake in a lot of money with its fireworks stand. the team is coached by ufc heavy weight champion daniel cormier. the money raised helps the team get to tournaments. >> because of stuff like these fundraisers,ed fireworks booth, we're able to provide the kids with hotel rooms, travel there, food, everything, and it's so important that people support the community and allow these kids to get the opportunities they deserve. >> the stand is in the parking lot of the home depot in gilroy. if you spend $200 you'll be entered into a raffle for tickets to ufc 241 in anaheim next month. if you live in gilroy and spend more than $1,000 cormier will personally deliver your fireworks. by the way, if you want to see legal fireworks or want information on other 4th of july events in the bay area go to abc7news.com. stay here with us, the boutique dog foods that could make your dog very sick. we'll have that story next.

news reporter has the story. >> after years of studying costs, community concerns and environmental impacts, the two northern california routes of the state's high speed rail have been picked. >> from san francisco through particular paths, about $15 billion. >> boris lipkin is the northern california regional director of the california high speed rail authority. he says from san francisco to san jose they picked a route that uses the existing caltrain corridor which is already being electrified. >> the differentiating factors were the location for high speed rail on the east or west side ofts track in brisbane as well as whether a tracking pass would be needed between san mateo and redwood city. >> the route does not have a passing track. going from san jose to her sed e more complicated. they say their decision incorporates yoousiusing existil lines and with the least impact

on surrounding cities. >> property impacts that we might have in terms of, you know, buyingnew land for a rail corridor as well as noise and other things that we heard from communities around the issues that they care about. >> transportation analyst karen fillbrick says she supports the decision. she says using existing tracks reduces capital cost, but there could be obstacles. >> the challenge is you have to have very close collaboration, and with operations and maintenance and that can sometimes prove difficult. >> the california high speed rail authority will now hold a series of community meetings in july followed by several open houses in august to get public opinion. the board will vote in september. in san jose, abc 7 news. boeing is offering to pay out $100 million in connection with two fatal crashes of their 737 max 8 planes. >> victims' families are not happy about it, and 7 on your side's michael finney is here with that story. >> this is going to be just the beginning of us hearing about

this. an attorney for families who are suing boeing is criticizing the offer saying it seems disingenuous so early in the litigation process. this offer comes after deadly crashes of max 737 planes flown by indonesian airline lion air and ethiopian airlines, 346 people died in those crashes. a boeing spokesperson says those who accept a share of the $100 million compensation fund will not be required to give up the right to pursue legal action against the company. the u.s. and other nations grounded all 737 max planes following the crashes. the fda has a list of 16 dog food brands that may be linked to greater risk of heart failure in dogs. the agency investigated after finding a sharp increase in my dogs. 98% of the products were grain

and as close as canada and central america to as far away as syria and sri lanka. >> that's so exciting. congratulations. great july 4th. >> you start a whole new chapter full of possibilities. >> that's really wonderful. let's turn our attention to the weather forecast for the holiday and the weekend beyond. >> how's it looking for the fireworks viewing? >> right now it is looking great in santa cruz. this is the way you want to kick off your holiday week. bright blue skies. people at the beach just soaking up the sun. live doppler 7 will show you the absence of a deep marine layer. as a matter of fact, it's a shallow fog layer and it's really just patchy along the coast from marin county down towards the san mateo coastline right now. see around this time of the year, westerly breeze gusting to 30 miles an hour in san francisco, and that wind is keeping everything stirred up enough to prevent that marine layer from really regrouping. so let's take a look at the highlights as we head towards

your holiday weekend, and it is really going to be nice. we will see mild and breezy conditions for the 4th of july for those parades. if you're taking your kids to a parade early tomorrow, it is going to be a nice day, and then clear inland and fog at the coast for the fireworks as we typically see around this time of the year. warmer weather for friday and saturday. right now we really don't have any heat to speak of. look at these temperatures. they're really in the comfort zone. 60s to 80s our highs today, anywhere from the low 60s to the upper 80s. a live look right now from our camera. the breeze is evidence. we also see a little bit of fog there in the distance. let's check out your 12-hour planner for the 4th of july. coastal clouds at noontime, temperatures upper 50s to mid-70s. bright for most of you at 4:00 p.m. except near the beaches. we will see the fog near the beaches and bay at 9:00 p.m. tomorrow night 50s, 60s with a cooling breeze by midnight. hour-by-hour, 3:00 p.m. tomorrow you notice that fog is sticking around. 9:30 it's spilling over into the east bay, so those are generally the areas we're going to have to

watch out for that fog. it will be clear inland, and as far as your temperatures go, so tomorrow evening you'll want to take an extra layer because it is going to be anywhere from the upper 50s to the low 60s. you just may need the light jacket, and that's about it. tomorrow morning temperatures in the 50s. we'll see a combination of some fog, little bit of drizzle near the coast, and then tomorrow afternoon a nice mild day in the south bay. gilroy 78, morgan hill 83, upper 70s from santa clara to san jose. it doesn't get much better than this on the peninsula. redwood city, palo alto, mid-70s. 52 in pacifica. fog will linger into the afternoon in daly city, 6 of downtown san francisco. north bay temperatures 77 in san rafael, 84 in santa rose, 79 in napa, east bay comfortable weather, berkeley, oakland, low 70s. 76 in fremont, and it's going to be nice and mild, 84 in con disorder, 81 in livermore. 80 tredegrees in san ramon. hurricane barbara still a very

a new study finds that cockroaches are becoming immune

to insecticides. reporter carlos granda from our abc sister station in los angeles has that story. ♪ roaches, they're only amusing in sing and dance in movies. in real life they're just disgusting and run around everywhere. randy beckman has seen them at their worst. he's the owner of get 'er done pest control. >> that's the most disgusting thing, behind picture frames, et cetera, you name it. >> beckman says you never have just one cockroach. when you see one, there are likely hundreds or thousands more nearby. and now they're getting harder to kill. >> cockroaches, they do sometimes get immune. >> a study in apartments in indiana and illinois used different pesticides to control german cockroach populations. they mixed some together and in the end found the roaches built a resistance. >> we use multiple types of products an igr which is an insect growth regulator that stops the regulation of them
