tragic mistake at the hospital. the wrong man is taken off life support. who is to blame? drama off the court for 15-year-old tennis phenom coco gauff. the controversy over a text message breakup just as she prepares for her big match today. and the legal battle brewing over the bikini baristas. will they be stripped of their right to serve coffee? good friday morning, everyone. thanks for joining us after the holiday. we begin with that state of emergency in southern california after the most powerful earthquake in 20 years. >> we're getting new images of the damage from cracked roads and water pipes to grocery store aisles in ruin to gas leaks and fires. the worry now is about aftershocks. some could be powerful. >> thursday's quake hit near the town of ridgecrest, california, about 150 miles northeast of los angeles. abc's mona kosar abdi is here with the latest on the cleanup

and what scientists are now saying. mona, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, janai and good morning, kenneth. so far what we are hearing from experts is with an earthquake of this magnitude, it's common to see a lot of aftershocks, but they also say that there's a small chance that this was just the foreshock and an even greater quake is yet to come. this morning, california under a state of emergency after a massive 6.4 earthquake shook the southern half of the state. >> all units, all units, we are on citywide earthquake mode. >> reporter: the largest temblor to hit the region in nearly two decades. >> we lost everything that we have. i have no tvs, i have no dressers, i have nothing. >> our kitchen is completely, completely destroyed. everything fell off the walls out of the cabinets. >> reporter: take a look at this video capturing a panicked employee running for safety amid the intense shaking that started around 10:30 a.m. local time. another angle showing contents on store shelves knocked to the floor and this home completely knocked off its foundation.

the 20-second quake was centered near ridgecrest, a sparsely populated area in the mojave desert and was followed by at least 100 aftershocks. the rattle could be felt from northern california all the way down to mexico. at the epicenter officials responding to reports of fires, cracked streets, downed power lines and property damage. patients from a local hospital were evacuated after suffering minor injuries. >> my computers were flying off onto the ground. the water bottle container was shaking. >> reporter: seismologist lucy jones described it as a strike-slip quake, which means two plates along the fault move parallel to each other but in opposite directions, and this morning a major message from jones warning of more aftershocks to come. >> there's about a 1 in 20 chance that this location will be having an even bigger earthquake within the next few days that we have not yet seen the biggest earthquake of the sequence. >> reporter: and seismologist

lucy jones, who you just heard from there, said there were at least two seismic faults involved in this earthquake, but she says the san andreas was not one of them and, janai and kenneth, that's important to note because a lot of people are concerned if this was the big one. >> yeah, very sobering comments there. mona, thank you. and we're following breaking news from florida. a helicopter on the way to ft. lauder dale from the bahamas has crashed killing seven americans. bloomberg reports one of those killed was billionaire chris cline who made his fortune in the coal industry. we turn now to the extreme weather. tornadoes, lightning and hail impacted much of the country overnight. this was the scene in colorado. farther north a tornado was reported. and in the south lightning turned deadly leaving several people injured. overnight tornado watches in effect. this large twister spotted in southeastern wyoming. strong and deadly holiday storms ripped through several states. caller advised that there were four unresponsive people down by

the river. >> reporter: one person dead in georgetown county, south carolina. a bolt of lightning struck a tree killing a 44-year-old man and injuring a dozen others. >> just chilling there in the house, and next thing i know here comes somebody banging on the door, and it was a little kid in a panic saying that a bunch of people got struck by lightning and wanted me to call 911. >> reporter: in moncks corner 30 miles north of charleston a microburst peeled back the metal roof on this building. near tampa, florida, this close call. >> wow! >> reporter: firefighters rushed to put out a house fire in durham, north carolina, sparked by more lightning. >> i heard another pop, and so i started freaking out. >> reporter: the severe weather fueled by the extreme heat, parts of the southeast felt like 100 degrees or more. the rising temperatures even having an impact in alaska, anchorage canceled its fourth of july fireworks show because of the heat, and it was 89 in anchorage yesterday, the highest

temperature ever recorded there. we'll have today's forecast in just a few minutes. now to a new twist this morning in president trump's battle to include a citizenship question on the 2020 census. sources say the president is now exploring the use of an executive order. a judge has issued a 2:00 p.m. deadline today for the white house to explain how it will legally proceed in the face of a supreme court decision that blocked the question. critics say a citizenship question on the census will lead to an undercounting of immigrants. meanwhile, president trump stuck to the script during his "salute to america" event in washington last night avoiding politics and praising the strength of the u.s. military saying there's nothing america can't do. abc's trevor ault was there. >> reporter: in what he said would be the show of a lifetime president trump's "salute to america" bringing thousands to the national mall. the president himself speaking from the lincoln memorial. >> we remember that all share a truly extraordinary heritage. together we are part of one of the greatest stories ever told, the story of america.

[ applause ] >> reporter: as the day's festivities unfolded, the president's critics also on hand including protesters flying this baby trump balloon. the president's political opponents also criticizing the event accusing the president of making it partisan by giving vip tickets to big dollar donors, also stirring controversy, those tanks and armored vehicles brought in to showcase america's military might. >> i think we need money to go into rebuilding our infrastructure. i'm not quite sure that we need money to go in to put tanks in downtown washington, d.c. >> reporter: but the president sidestepping politics in his remarks praising american heroes, pioneers and service members.

>> and our nation is stronger today than it ever was before. it is its strongest now. >> reporter: president trump has wanted a large-scale military display like this since he saw something similar in france back in 2017. he becomes the first president to make a formal fourth of july address in washington, d.c. since president truman back in 1951. janai, kenneth. >> trevor, thank you. the only republican member of congress to call for president trump's impeachment is leaving the gop. michigan congressman justin amash has announced his plan to become an independent. he says modern politics is trapped in a, quote, partisan death spiral. president trump called his departure great news for the republican party. switching gears now and let's take a look at your weather forecast for this friday morning. well, certainly feeling that holiday heat for fayetteville, north carolina.

th this fireworks show was not intentional. the containers storing rockets at this fireworks store in south carolina somehow ignited sending the pyrotechnics flying into the sky. it took firefighters about 45 minutes to put out the fire. at least three people have been stabbed at a blood donation center near richmond, virginia. police say a man walked into the building and used a cutting instrument to hurt several people. terrified nurses and customers tried to hide in a bathroom. that suspect is now in custody. police have not revealed a motive, and we're told the victims are in stable condition. a 13-year-old in suburban new york is being praised for how she escaped from a would-be kidnapper. a surveillance camera on her house captured her struggle with the suspect. she was walking home when a man ted following her. the girl threw a water bottle at him. then she says he grabbed her, put his hand over her mouth and dragged her behind some cars, but the teen got away. experts say she did the right

thing. >> it's difficult to see that video, but it's also amazing at the same time to see that little girl fight back and do everything that she could to make sure that she got away from that guy, to draw attention as much as she could, and that way she's safe at home with her family. >> the 13-year-old knocked on the door of her house for help. her brother ran out and shoved the suspect who was later tracked down and arrested by police. and at the same time police are searching for the suspects in this flash mob at a store near milwaukee. they grabbed $30,000 in merchandise in less than 30 seconds including jackets and other clothes. police are asking for help in identifying those suspects. if you like free cocktails, you'll like this news from delta air lines. it's upgrading the service in economy class. the service will include a free cocktail to start and what delta calls bistro style dining and a free chocolate. but the upgrade in economy class will only be on international flights longer than six hours.

shots in may to determine he was rosie brooks' missing brother alfonso bennett. but she immediately told doctors something didn't seem right. >> i said, doc, i understand what you're saying, but i cannot recognize him as my brother. >> reporter: showing no signs of improvement, brooks and her family made the excruciating decision to take him off of life support, but as they prepared for his funeral, alfonso bennett very much alive and well walked into a friend's barbecue. >> she said, he's here. he's alive. >> reporter: it turns out the missing man was actually elisha brittman, fingerprints from the morgue eventually revealing his true identity. >> it wasn't just i searched for him one day. it was every day. >> reporter: both families now coming together filing a wrongful death lawsuit against chicago and the hospital that handled the case. >> the bottom line is is that this mistaken identity situation was something that we think very much think could have been

avoided. >> reporter: at this point neither the city nor the hospital have commented on that lawsuit. alex perez, abc news, chicago. presidential candidate pete buttigieg confronted racism on the campaign trail during a tense exchange in iowa. a man in the audience suggested blac were fau for police shootings and high crime rates prompting buttigieg to cut him off. >> the fact that a black person is four times as likely as a white person to be incarcerated for the exact same crime is evidence that there's racism. sir, when black people and white people are treated the same by the criminal justice system, it will be easier for white people and black people to live in this country, and it will be easier for law enforcement to do their job, but racism has no place in american politics or in america. >> buttigieg, the mayor of south bend, indiana, has been under fire since a black resident was shot and killed by a white police officer last month. a follow-up now on a story we brought you earlier this week. a 70-year-old runner accused of cheating in the los angeles marathon has been found dead.

frank meza has set a record for his age group, but images from the race appear him taking a shortcut and he was disqualified. meza denied cheating. he was found dead in the los angeles river thursday. no cause of death was given. officials say they do not believe he drowned. the tour de france starts tomorrow. and we know it's not going to look like this. this is a mountain bike race that started at the top of a ski run high in the french alps. they call the annual race mountain of hell and, well, you can see why. some riders fell down the icy slope setting off this chain reaction crash that lasted several minutes. riders were traveling more than 50 miles an hour. >> whoa. >> maybe the most shocking part of all, one race report said despite the carnage on the mountain, incredibly there were no serious injuries. >> that is a good thing. >> yep. up next in "the pulse," the hot dog eating champ strikes again.

night. >> wre j liveow in san joseir burned close to home. >> reporter: reggie, you are correct. we are here in san jose. firefighters got calls for trees that caught fire. these are the trees you can see they are talking about. the fire quickly spread to this car. you can see how intense the fire burned given the damage that was done. let's show you video from a few hours ago. the fire broke out at luke court near mccreery avenue. crews rushed to put out the flames as they ripped through the trees and caused damage to the car. >> some kids passing by. down the street. they thought it would be funny to light the street up.

unfortunately as they were lighting it up they caught a tree on fire. >> doors to make sure everybody got out. this man was house sitting. he got on the roof with the hose to protect the house. this is the car that was damaged in the fire. the street is littered with debrises but no reports of any injuries. >> illegal fireworks may have caused this fire in san jose. you can see them going off in the background. people at fireworks near i-680 and jackson avenue last night when this started. >> here is a look at what was
