>> good afternoon. i'm chris zee. >> i'm dion him. we'll have more throughout the afternoon and evening. today's other top story, the recovery from yesterday's earthquake. >> get out. get out. >> aftershocks rattle already frayed nerves in southern california. >> if we continue to have these 5.0s or greater, is that going to continue to wear on these buildings? >> aftershocks from southern california's largest quaking in two decades continue to rumble near los angeles. the 5.4 aftershock hit the region earlier today. news reporter alex stone joins with us a look at the damage and recovery. >> reporter: as clean-up begins. >> our kitchen's completely destroyed. everything fell off the walls out of the cabinets. >> reporter: residents inside of the quake z ery tt we

have. i have no tvs. i have no dressers. i have nothing. >> reporter: multiple aftershocks continue to rock the region. abc's eva pilgrim experiencing one firsthand. >> got to get out. get out, get out. >> reporter: yesterday's 6.4 earthquake hitting just after 10:30 a.m. local time in the mo have desert, the epicenter 11 miles northeast of the town of ridge crest. this surveillance video inside of a market capturing the moment it hit, a store employee running for safety. these children performing in a fourth of july show when the ground start to shake. pete robles was underneath his th whole l to the oor, forced to evacuate. a nearby trailer park hit hard knocking this home off its foundation. >> i didn't realize it was going to be that big. it was big.

i'm shook up and i -- it was hard getting out too. >> reporter: seismologists have described this as a strike/slip quake meaning the two plates along the fault moved parallel to each other but in opposite directions. >> now a day after the main quake, the clean-up is only beginning as the threat looms of an even bigger quake. alex stone, abc news, riblg crest, california. >> hundreds of aftershocks have been reported since yesterday's quake including a 5.4 that hit just after 4:00 this morning felt as far away as los angeles and las vegas. residents say the aftershocks are not letting up. >> coming on nonstop, some of them pretty good but there's -- it's unbelievable. i can hear the house creep. i know when one hits because i can hear all the things settling in the house. i can hear the movement of the house first. and then i feel it. >> officials say the aftershocks could continue for days, possibly weeks and they warn that the worst may yet be to

come. >> yesterday's quake measured 6.4 in magnitude. what does that mean. >> was this nearly as low ma preetta? the answer is no. low ma preetta was 5 and a half times stronger. it's exponential. if you go up a point, 32 times more energy is released. i found this calculator to be really helpful. it makes it clear why an 8.0 would be so much more destructive and that i 6.0. the great san francisco erg quake after 1906 was a 7.9. the napa quake five years ago was 6.0. let's calculate the difference in strength. oay? the 8.0 would be, check this out, there. 1,000 times stronger than the 6.0. this is why each point, half point or tenth point in magnitude makes a huge difference in impact. >> following an erg quake, we

remind people what they need to have at home to prepare. we asked lyanne melendez to give us a refresher course. you've got to be ready. >> i have a confession to make. i love anything that has to do was survivalism. people who prepare for doomsday call themselves preppers. you don't need to be that extreme. you need the basics to get through those few days after the earthquake. they suggest having enough supplies for three days. others say it's better to keep supplies for a week even two weeks. water and food, of course, essential. you can now buy canned water with a shelf life of 50 years. there you have it. that's basically a lifetime. i'll be dead before that goes bad. the good thing is you don't have to buy water every five years. they sell food that keeps for 25 years, flashlights should be part of your kit and things to keep you warm because you may be outside if your house is damaged or you are afraid of going back

can be fun but last night, this was him. hosing down his roof trying to keep it from catching fire. >> yeah, i'm scared but like i said, i tried to do my best because all the others going through our house. i was wondering if the roof got on fire too before the fire department an rbi. >> reporter: he says just after 11:00 p.m., young kids were out playing with illegal fireworks. a nearby neighbor says one of them exexploded near a tree and quickly spread. >> it was like a bomb. >> reporter: the flames burned high above rooftops raining down ash and damaging a car. he's thankful no one was injured. >> i was thinking the house going to be in danger. then we can do nothing. unthe were 37 fires ra costa alone. reported in a span of six hours. crews in purk battle aid blaze here harbor and east third street that grew to two acres.

in san jose, we reached out to the fire department. they comment about the possibility of charges being filed. unser hassan, abc news. >> overnight, san francisco police and fire hit the streets searching for illegal fireworks. the departments teamed up for a special task force throughout the city. the ingleside police station says officers seized hundreds of pounds of i real liar works. >> spencer christian has a look at conditions right now. >> we've got relative humidity at normal levels. it's not hot. so the it is breezy outside. a live view, look at live doppler 7 showing little fog an the coastline. how breeze su is it? 21-mile-per-hour surface wind here? san francisco,zyutusty at the moment. 24-hour temperature change, it is warmer in most locations than

from the inspector general's office that described dangerous conditions at the overcrowded facilities. in a statement to the media today, president trump said they are run beautifully. >> a big change at san francisco international airport could help reduce traffic jams. an additional parking lot for ride share drivers will finally open. the third lot is on san bruno avenue and it will double the space where drivers for uber and lyft wait to pick up passengers. sfo has been dealing with track on mill brae avenue because of the pickups. >> we soon could be paying a lot more for shopping bags in san francisco. right now it costs 10 cents for each bag given at stores in the city. but supervisor valley brown wants to raise it to 25 cents sa wouush peo tog.franscs small commission voted to support the increase. if the board of supervisors approves the fee hike, you'll start paying more for the bags come next july. >> surfing equality.

equal pay at mavericks surf competition has done it again this time raising money to create equal pay at the big wave surf competition in mexico. melanie woodrow has the story. >> bay area surfer bianca

valenti is unstoppable in and out of the water. her latest accomplishment raising $11,000 to support equal pay for women competing an the big wave surf competition in mexico. valenti surpassed her $9,000 fund-raising goal in just two days. >> there's so much momentum behind this movement, it's awesome to feel it. that's the viva. >> the competition will be the first international big wave competition to offer a women's competition with equal pay outside the quunts. she made waves like this before. she and three other women banded together to create pay equity in surfing convincing the california state lands commission which would only grant a permit off the coast of half moon bay if women were paid the same as men. >> bianca is motivated to champion equal pay for women for all the little girls and future athletes watching. >> she is the defending champion of the upcoming competition in

treat my body right. >> he sounds lethargic, too. he says he'll eat very little today, maybe salad and enjoy chicken or salomon tomorrow. >> a bear decided to beat the heat in southern california today. kabc shot this footage of a bear taking a dip in castaic, 40 miles north of los angeles. the owner spotted the bear with a cub. temperatures reached 79 degrees as the bear cooled off. the two bears made their way through the backyard before roaming on to nearby properties. imagine a 99 degrees day, like a bear party. >> you have so much fur like wearing a coat all year round. >> you have to bare all on a day like that. . >> a story i used to cover as a cub reporter. we should move along. things are getting grizzly.

in some of the inland east bay locations where it will be a bit milder. forecast animation starting at 8:00 this evening shows the disappearing fog tomorrow morning. 8:00 tomorrow morning, there o o will be matches of low clouds and fog near the coast could. it will continue pulling away. mostly sunny skies. could be patches of low clouds lingering tomorrow. most of the day mostly sunny from coast to inland. that's a treat if you like sunny weather. high temperatures tomorrow range from about 65 at half moon bay to 67 here in san francisco, 73 across the bay. oakland lots of upper 80s to low 88anta 92 hinland east bay. at clover dale and ukiah tomorrow. but on sunday, notice how sharply temperatures drop, cooling trend begins on sunday and inland areas near 90 tomorrow. low to mid 80s on sunday.

further cooling on monday. most inland locations on sunday -- monday will have highs only in the upper 70s. but then on tuesday, we'll see temperatures beginning to rebound a bit. that takes us to the weekend forecast for tahoe. in case you're heading out that way, sunny skies mainly over the weekend. highs in the mid to upper 70s. here's a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast for the bay area. i mentioned the drop in temperatures on sunday and monday. notice though how they start to bounce back on tuesday. then wednesday, thursday and friday of next week, high temperatures in a rather typical range for this time of year upper 80s to 90 inland. upper 70s to 80 near the bay shoreline and mid 60s on the coastline. kindfs go up and down and then >> i spent all of that weather cast trying to think of a bear pun and came up with nothing. >> how about this, not too cold. >> she didn't want to polarize

now, news to build a better bay area. from abc7. >> here are the stories making headlines at 4:3037 breaking news we told but at the top of the hour. a gas leak believed to be responsible for an explosion at a dormitory at the university of nevada reno. officials now say at least eight people suffered minor injuries in the building that partially collapsed as you can see. a grass fire burning in martinez near franklin canyon r. fire officials say the 24-acre fire may have been started by fireworks. cornell bernard will have more details at 5:00. >> hundreds of aftershocks continue to rattle southern california after yesterday's 6.4 magnitude earthquake. residents are assessing the damage today. at least two homes burned and

two others red tagged because of damage. >> in the south bay, a frightening ordeal for a los gatos man and his young son after they were almost run off the road. the driver got away but the incident caught on camera. news reporter chris nguyen has the story. >> reporter: during an evening drive on the fourth of july. >> i released that this car was speeding pretty aggressively. >> reporter: tense moments for a tesla driver all captured by his model x. watch as john's suv turns on to blossom hill road in los gatos only to be struck later by what appears to be a ford f150. >> he's coming close, hits my car. i hear my son's forehead hit the back seat. >> reporter: this video shows the truck almost lose control after the impact. he is grateful he and his son weren't seriously hurt. >> frustration, thankfulness making sure we're fine but even more anger as the guy is speeding off. >> reporter: other tes las

in the video was at the house. so was 32 years dennis munz from san jose accused of hit and run and reckless driving. >> now to the question over the u.s. census. can the department of justice ask about citizen hadship. >> today was the deadline for the department of justice's lawyargumehy it's necessary. here's trevor all the. >> reporter: with the clock rubbing out for the government to make a new legal argument why the question is needed, president trump ever defiant insisting the census should determine who is and is not an american. >> we're finding out everything about everybody. think of it. 15 to $20 billion and you're not allowed to skemsk them, are you a citizen. >> reporter: today the president sayi options are still on the table for trying to get a citizenship question into the 2020 census including signing an executive order. this just days after his department of justice said they'd started printing the census without the citizenship question in response to a

deision from the supreme court. in a 5-4 ruling, john roberts rejecting the doj's reasoning for the question calling it contrived. >> i have a lot of respect for justice roberts but he didn't like it. but he did say come back. >> reporter: this afternoon, doj lawyers filed their response to a federal judge in maryland say they were still reanti-inflammatorying all available options following the supreme court's decision. perhaps further muddying the waters an answer president trump gave this morning when asked why the question was necessary. >> you need it for many reasons. number one, you need it for congress. you need to tore congress, for districting. >> reporter: that reasoning is exactly why the administration's opponents want the question kept off the census because congressional districts are drawn by total population, not the number of citizens a practice already upheld by the court. >> census officials have said if on the census, it will be less accurate. president trump says they can still print the census without
