c migraine. text track to 50334 for our migraine tracker, then talk to your doctor. news to build a better bay area. this is abc 7 mornings. good morning. it is saturday, july 6th. i'm chris nguyen. we begin with breaking news on the 7.1 earthquake that shook california, the impact felt even in las vegas. you can see the big apple coaster at the new york, new york hotel swaying for 40 seconds after the quake hit. emergency crews have been working overnight to fix the damage from the quake, centered around the town of ridgecrest. that's the same area where a magnitude 6.4 quake struck on

the fourth of july. last night's quake came around 8:19 p.m. and was felt as far north as sacramento. there have been multiple reports of damage to buildings, power outages and minor injuries. we will have more on that in just a minute, but first let's send it to meteorologist lisa argen for a preview of your bay area forecast. lisa, good morning to you. >> good morning, chris. the low clouds are clearing. we are seeing some sunshine around the bay, and as we look live from our roof camera, it is pretty nice out here in san francisco. temperatures are in the 50s, 60 in oakland. it is 59 in san jose. this is san rafael where we've got clear sky, in the mid 50s in santa rosa. a big comeback from your upper 40s earlier. 62, concord. today it will be a warmer day. that's the san jose airport where the numbers will climb through the 70s by noon time, and we will have a lot of sun even at the coast though it will be cool. we will see low to mid 60s there, climbing to the 70s around the bay, and touching about 90 in the warmest inland valleys. chris. >> lisa, thank you. back to our top story. the magnitude 7.1 earthquake

that rocked the town of ridgecrest last these are just some of the images showing the damage the quake caused. light fixtures rattled inside restaurants, putting people into a panic, while multiple fires from ruptured gas lines were reported in kern county. last night's earthquake was centered 11 miles away from ridgecrest. again, it is in the same area as thursday as 6.4 earthquake. video shows a massive fire at a mobile home park in ridgecrest. state emergency officials provided an update late last night. there are also reports of collapsed buildings, power outages and gas leaks in the small town of trona. that's in san bernardino county. a hospital and a number of care facilities have also been impacted. officials say there are multiple injuries reported, but it is unclear how many. resources were already deployed in the area after thursday's earthquake. >> we have significant reports

of fires, structure fires, mostly as a result of gas leaks or gas -- a line breaks. there are gas line breaks throughout the city. there are also reports of water main breaks. power is out and communications is out to parts of the community. >> in a series of tweets, governor gavin newsom says the state of california will continue to whoever support to aid residents in the region. the governor had officially requested a presidential emergency declaration for direct federal assistance to further support emergency response and recovery in impacted comments. he has also activated the state operations center in mather to its highest level and the center is already working closely with state, federal and local emergency managers and first responders. this magnitude 7.1 earthquake rattled southern california and caught thousands of people off guard. has some of the best video we are seeing. >> reporter: inside this marshal's store in ridgecrest, california, agony can be heard as the lights went off and glass shattered inside the store and employees began -- >> oh, my god. >> video has been pouring into the newsroom overnight. here you can see water spilling out of a pool at a home in ridgecrest. >> oh, my god. >> here is a look at some of the damage in trona. these pictures from reporter la tease ya' juarez from our abc sister station in los angeles shows what state route 178 looks like. a portion there has buckled. state route 178 is now closed and caltrans has no estimated time of reopening. this is video of a rock slide caused by the quake on state route 178 between ridgecrest and bakersfield. this area of the highway is also closed. caltrans is there assessing the damage and figuring out how to

clear the road. the good news though, there have been no reports of major injuries near the epicenter. back in los angeles the ground was shaking at dodger stadium dodgers hosted the san diego padres. you can see the camera swaying. some people got up out of their seats but the game proceeded as normal. seismologists say because this earthquake was a 7.1, the 6.4 quake that hit on thursday is now called a foreshock. our team in the south bay also felt last night's earthquake while covering a story in san jose. "abc 7 news" reporter amanda del castillo spoke with usgs officials. >> reporter: photo journalist and i were working on a completely different story when i felt the earthquake. i felt initially dizzy and then i saw the light fixtures swaying. of course, nothing compared to the power the people in southern california experienced, but still quite shocking. menlouote and they say the,

quote, big one is still coming. despite how powerful the earthquake was yesterday night, they're calling it a more common hazard. we spoke with people in the south bay who say swinging chandeliers caught their attention. >> we were eating dinner at the spaghetti factory and we could see the chandeliers moving and we could see the employees talking to each other, and i was like, oh, maybe it was the air conditioner, but they were swaying. >> pretty scary, especially after happening this weekend, you know. it is frightening. >> this is a more common hazard as we know from our own experience living through loma prieta and the 2014 napa earthquake. so the big one is scary, so if it helps you be lessk scare abo. they will come more often, they are easy to prepare from and recover from. >> reporter: seismologists say another quake of 6.0 would not be surprising. menton says we saw the power of tonight's earthquake fluctuate from 6.9 to 7.1 because of data being updated.

in the city. the fire was likely caused by a ruptured gas line. a neighbor spoke about the moments the earthquake struck. >> boy, it was scary because it was bouncing, it bounced my tool box over. i came outside, walked around the corner and that thing was 100-foot high. >> he said the quake felt much stronger than thursday's, but he said the shaking from the previous quake lasted much longer. corey james from our sister station in fresno is live in ridgecrest at that mobile home park this morning and has more on the quake's impact. corey, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you, too. you can see some of the damage behind me to this mobile home we've been told right now is a complete loss. that fire igniting just after 6:30 this morning, and right in front of the mobile home you can see some of the things that firefighters tried to salvage from the inside of the home. from what we have learned from neighbors though, this is a home that a familyou ldu disabled sons, and because of last night's earthquake they wanted

to leave just to be able to escape any event that something happened, again, with another earthquake and they escaped to magee from what we learned from neighbors. as a result of that, neighbors said managers came around trying to adjust the gas line, and they think something possibly with the gas line ignited the fire this morning. joining me is britney williams who lives next door. we spoke a few moments ago but you said you were home with the fire started and you heard some popping noises? >> yes, i heard the windows start to crack and flames start to shoot out of the windows. as soon as i seen that, because the first thing i heard waking up this morning was my neighbor, like, screaming and yelling, "fire, there's a fire, everybody get out." so, like, i thought it was her place right here on fire. and like as soon as i seen that, realized it was this trailer, i ran back inside, grabbed my son, told my fiance to run outside, like we have a fire, we need to do something. and so we got outside and more windows just started cracking, more flames just started

shooting up the -- like i was worried the trees and stuff were going to catch on fire and then just catch everybody else's trailers on fire. i was just scared. >> reporter: to see something like this in your community, i mean you have dealt with a lot over the past couple of days, an earthquake on thursday, 6.4 and the big one last night, 7.1. take me back to last night. what did you experience? what did you feel? >> i was just terrified. like as soon as it hit, like my son wasn't home with me actually. he was with his father, so as soon as it hit, like, my first kern concern and worry was, like, where is my son, is he okay, is everything okay. and then i realized exactly what just happened and, like, just freaked. like our place is in shambles. i am trying to clean it up as we speak and, i don't know, like i'm happy they weren't home. >> reporter: absolutely. i'm so sorry you guys have all had to deal with this. thank you so much, britney.

again, a lot of folks in the community, even some of the businesses, we talked to a number of them yesterday, a lot of them trying to clean things up, get things ready for operation. then they're hit with the 7.1 magnitude earthquake again, damaging a lot of their stores. so we will be talking to them, but this is kind of the very latest, what we are seeing here in ridgecrest. i will send it back to you guys in the studio. >> all right. cory james reporting live for us from ring crest. thank you. . time now is 8:15. back here at home the sonoma county sheriff's office is describing a bizarre series of events that led to officers shooting a man they say was under the influence of lsd. officers say the man punched, stabbed and choked those around him during a fourth of july outing in bodega bay. the man shot is a 32-year-old man from san francisco, his name is betai koffi. he and five friend rented a house in bodega bay for the july 4th weekend. his friend told investigators he consumed two hits of lsd, became

delusional and hit two additional hits. that's when things got out of control. friends say koffi started trying to leave the house around 8:00 p.m. he punched a woman at the house, stabbed a man with a pencil, and then choked another man. koffi got out of the house into his rental car and backed into a parked car before crashing into the garage of their rented home. next he ran down the street until a security guard stopped him. investigators say he picked up a landscaping stake and grabbed -- and stabbed the security guard with it before knocking him to the ground. koffi then got into the security guard's truck and sped toward a man and a woman who were walking by. he hit them. we've been told that the woman has serious injuries, but the man is okay. then police say koffi drove off the road and toward another couple who were standing on a bluff. the woman suffered serious injuries. investigators say koffi kept driving into a wall and through yards. a chp officer and sonoma county

sheriff's departmenti sheriff's deputy got there about the same time and say koffi tried to run down both officers. the officer fired several shots when he wouldn't stop. investigators say three bullets him hit through the windshield of the truck. he is hospitalized in critical condition facing two counts of attempted m attempted murder, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and carjacking. the two women he is accused of running down are hospitalized with serious injuries but both are expected to recover along with the stabbed security guard. 8:17 the time. happening today, the san rafael pacifics, a minor league baseball team, will hold a donor drive in honor of a local teen who desperately needs a bone marrow transplant. 15-year-old freshman daniel rose was recently diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia, and his family needs to find that one in a million genetic match for a donor soon. so the pacifics are pulling out

morgan hill. as we look from our east bay hills camera, you can see the fog here in the distance. plenty of sunshine, a warm day for your in the inland valleys. mid 50s, santa rosa and petaluma with loi 60s by the delta, fairfield, concord and livermore. as you look at the upper level winds you notice from mount tam gusting to 32 miles per hour, but look at the direction, straight out of the north. that is allowing for not a lot of fog over into the east bay. what we do have is breaking up. this has been the featured picture today from our exploratorium camera where it looks pretty nice out there. patchy, coastal fog, sunny and warmer today. a cooler pattern setting up for your sunday. monday, compliments of more fog and a stronger sea breeze. this is what we get this afternoon with more sunshine, then high clouds and low clouds fill in tomorrow morning. we could even see some mist and drizzle along the coast for the next several days as we get into a cooler pattern on sunday and monday. this is the afternoon tomorrow,

and you will notice that by 11:00 we still have a good deal of fog moving into the east bay. but it is going to pull back, as well as today, and in santa cruz we'll be in the 70s once again. 60s today with partial to mostly sunny skies. 65 in ocean beach as well as bodega bay. the water temperature in the upper 50s. the range today from the 60s, 70s, upper 0s to near 90 by the delta. 73 in oakland. a little above average there. low 80s for you in napa. santa rosa, 77 in san mateo. we will look for the cooler day as we head into not only tomorrow but the coolest should be on monday where highs are just in the 70s, 60s around the bay. by tuesday it looks like we're area going to get into a little bit more warmth but it will take to the middle of the week where we rebound, upper 80s inland and more 70s around the bay. the accuweather forecast, 60 with sun at the coast. 80 around the bay.

starting in san francisco with temperatures in the mid 60s. it is in the mid 50s with the clouds in half moon bay. this is walnut creek where numbers will come up through the 50s today. by 10:00 we just have clouds along the san mateo coast. it is in the 60s and 70s around the bay. inland, 2:00, looking at more 80s inland with 70s approaching san ramon. comfortable 60s in san francisco. today the fog will be parting the shoreline. tomorrow will be the cooler afternoon. i will have my accuweather seven-day forecast coming up. >> lisa, thank you. breaking news. another major earthquake rocked southern california. that's where officials are warning of aftershocks after last night's 7.1 earthquake. it was centered 11 miles from ridgecrest. authorities are beginning to survey the damage and will provide an update in a little bit. right now let's listen in to a press conference being held by kern county officials. >> here at the eoc, and we will have follow-up out in ridgecrest. okay. questions? >> any major damage or any major injuries so far? >> you know, we're out inspecting buildings right now. obviously, you know, overnight -- you know, it is interesting. you know, everybody wants information quickly and as well as i. you know, i want information quickly when we get out there. but, you know, when you think about it, it is dark outside. we're going call to call to call, and it is hard to gather that intel in darkness. you know, if you have a fire, you can see that perimeter. you can map that perimeter. you can -- day or night. so it is a lot easier. but they're out doing, you know, house-to-house inspections, building inspections. you know, we do feel like there is damage, but we don't know the extent of it yet. nobody was trapped. no major collapses that we know

of, but we're out there searching. so ridgecrest will really focus on that, but we have people in place to -- to help throughout kern county. we are obviously concerned about all of kern county as a whole. that's what we're focusing on right now. >> so you have been listening to a press conference with officials in kern county talking about some of the damage in ridgecrest. officials there just starting their inspections this morning. at this point they do not believe anyone was trapped, no major damage. so some good news there. this is something we will continue to monitor throughout the day. all right. meteorologist lisa argen tracking the accuweather forecast for us. we see that fog behind us. any delays at sfo? >> no, not yet. we are looking at more sunshine around the bay. warmer conditions today but, yes, you have the fog here in santa cruz, going for a high in the 70s. back home though we're in the

shows. opd reported 125 illegal fireworks on independence day, and this video posted on social media shows a fourth of july side show on high street near the interstate 880 on ramp with fireworks exploding overhead. officers arrested 12 people, towed 17 cars, issued 101 vehicle code citations and recovered 200 pounds of fireworks when they broke it up. >> chp always tries to keep its hand on the pulse of what is going on in oakland, and this particular event was just -- was a large side show event. we do everything we can to shut down the activity because it is highly dangerous. >> authorities estimate there were 400 spectators at that side show, some shooting off fireworks, others possible gunfire. opd and chp are working together to crackdown on side show activity and say they will be in full force this weekend. nba finals west.

out in parts of the bay, and we're going to see more sunshine today, warmer temperatures temporarily before the reversal of the wind allows us to cool down for the second half of the weekend. there's tam and you can see how sunny it is. as we look at our forecast highlights this morning, the fog, what we had of it is continuing to clear. as a result we are looking at some temperatures in the 60s in our east bay valleys. today we'll warm through the 80s to near 90 there, and then tomorrow a stronger onshore push. temperatures coming down at least six degrees or so. here is a look at the fog and a little bit of wind for you from our roof camera, emeryville. nice and sunny. that has scattered out quickly, and live doppler 7 showing you the fog footprint all around the bay area, but not for long. we will be looking at a sunny day today and the number's reflecting that warmth from oakland, 60. 61 in redwood city. cool here in the city. 54 in morgan hill. san jose at 59.

the reason i'm showing you another picture of tam, i want to show you the wind where they're coming out of the north at higher elevations. upper 50s to low 60s. we were in the upper petaless uma. we will get the typical sea breeze. it will be breezier along the coast. through the overnight hours, the winds pick up at the coast. there's a system to the north of us enhancing the onshore flow. as we get into your afternoon on sunday, looks pretty good. this is 10:30 in the morning, but look what happens by about 3:00, 4:00. the winds pick up, and that's our source of cooling for your sunday afternoon. today's saturday though. we have lower 80s on tap for san jose. 80 in milpitas. a nice day for you in sunnyva 8. 77, san mateo. looking at upper 60s downtown.

partly sunny conditions at the coast, a few patches of fog, but you should get into a sunnier afternoon there. 84, petaluma. cloverdale, 92. see how far north you have to go to get those 90s. 80, vallejo. 75, berkley. union city warming to 77. 78, fremont. we are getting some mid and upper 80s from san ramon to concord today. 90, pittsburg. 87 in livermore. that warmth is not going to hold on very much longer. in fact, the accuweather seven-day forecast shows the cool down for your sunday, going from 90 today inland, mid 80s tomorrow. 80 at the bay tomorrow, mid 70s tomorrow. and then looking at the low clouds and fog scattering out at the shoreline today, download our accuweather app and you can keep track of the downward trend right on through monday, and then by tuesday a little bit warmer. it is wednesday and thursday it feels like summer again with those numbers rebounding towards about 90 degrees. by friday, slightly cooler.
