families with them for the ride of their lives. rapinoe and lavelle's mom all hugs and showing off the special locker room.s jers those champions basked in victory. some fans in the stands got their fight for equal pay as the team prepares to enter mediation with the u.s. soccer federation when they return to the states. but for now it's all celebration as team u.s.a. coasts to four stars and to being on top of the world. and the celebrations continue on wednesday in new york. there will be a ticker tape parade to honor the team and there's no telling how many little girls will be watching. little girls like rose lavelle, one of our favorite stories from this tournament. her elementary school posted a photo of her dressed up as mia hamm as a child and now rose is in the history books as well. robin? >> they'll be dressing up like rose now. hey, adrienne, thank you. wait a minute. we'll see them back in action sooner than later, the team, aren't we.

>> reporter: yes, that is correct. they'll do a victory tour starting with a game in pasadena at the rose bowl. another historic location and that will be on august 3rd. we look forward to that. >> the 99ers from the rose bowl. adrienne, you had a great time. good for you. glad you enjoyed it. >> thank you so much. so fun. okay, we'll turn to the fallout from those earthquakes that shook southern california this weekend. two major quakes, thousands of aftershocks have the region on edge and marcus moore is in ridgecrest, california, with the latest. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: george, good morning. we have felt several after shocks overnight as people here recover from back-to-back earthquakes including some who are ha the family who lived in this house burned in the aftermath of friday's earthquake. this morning, california is a state on edge. hit by the strongest earthquakes in 20 years sparking fires, causing thousands to lose power and creating uncertainty in businesses and homes across the golden state.

>> oh, my god. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: with thousands of aftershocks rattling the region over the weekend, many now wondering is the worst yet to come? >> we all, i think, have a unique role and responsibility to prepare individually to be prepared for the next earthquake of magnitude even greater than 7.1. >> reporter: the one-two punch began on july 4th in ridgecrest, 120 miles from los angeles. the first quake registering a 6.4 magnitude. a day later a second quake registering 7.1. watch this woman unable to get up and seek safety. and this 2-year-old dangerously close to a swaying trailer. >> get up. get up. get up. >> reporter: the shaking felt at the los angeles dodgers game. >> how are they continuing to play baseball? >> reporter: to give you an idea how powerful this earthquake was, look at this. the ground is split and there is a gash in the earth and when the violent shaking starts it shifted the ground and left a

crack that stretches for as far as the eye can see through the california desert. miraculously no lives lost and experts say the number of aftershocks is now dropping. >> it is dropping off relatively quickly. the number of earthquakes that we're seeing here on sunday is substantially below what we were seeing on saturday. >> reporter: we felt a strong jolt a couple hours ago. dr. jones points out the earthquakes will continue every hour or two and then they'll go down to daily and weekly. but there is still a 3% chance they could see a stronger earthquake than 7.1 in the coming days. michael? >> thank you, marcus. we move to the latest on the battle over the border. president trump is blasting the accounts of appalling conditions at border facilities, defending the detention centers housing children. our chief national correspondent matt gutman who reported extensively from the border has more from a facility near san diego. good morning, matt. >> reporter: hey, good morning, michael.

the president going as far as saying that conditions at facilities like these and even facilities that house migrant children are, quote, much better than where these migrant children came from. i have been to this facility in texas and i can tell you it is jarring to see children as young as toddlers locked up in whattt are basically jail-like conditions. president trump's spent part of his weekend lashing out at "the new york times" for exposing that child detention facility in texas. >> i think "the new york times" story is a fabrication. >> reporter: that piece published saturday details nightmarish conditions in this migrant facility in clint, texas. the joint investigation from "the new york times" and "the el paso times" sources dozens of unnamed border patrol agents who saw outbreaks of scabies, shingles and chicken pox spreading among the hundreds of children held in cramped cells. the stench of the children's

dirty clothing so strong it spread to the agents' own clothing. conditions that reportedly left some border patrol officers in tears. but president trump refuting the report even adding that he thinks migrants might actually prefer the conditions at detention centers. >> people that came from unbelievable poverty, that had no water, they had no anything where they came from, those are people that are very happy with what's going on because relatively speaking they're in much better shape right now. >> reporter: no pictures from inside the facility accompanied "the times" article and when abc toured the site two weeks ago, our repeated request to bring in camr cameras was denied. any chance to bring the cameras inside to show people what's going on? >> no, it's a pen and pad tour as we talked about. >> reporter: those images from the department of homeland security office of the inspector general taken at similar texas border patrol facilities, horrific overcrowding.

faces pressed against cell windows. allowed only those thin mylar sheets and offered limit to no showers. >> there's adequate food and water because the facility is cleaned every day. we have no evidence that children went hungry. >> reporter: acting homeland security secretary kevin mcaleenan dismissing recent scrutiny over health conditions at the centers but acknowledging there is a real crisis. now, the border patrol says the number of children at its facilities is down by about 85%. when we were at clint, we saw children sleeping on the floor, lookingmiserable, some of them crying. it's questionable that the amount of food they're getting for stays averaging up to ten days is actually adequate. >> it's hard to see those images in the studio. i spoke to tell me they don't have the capacity to do that, but we might see hundreds if not

thousands deported. michael? >> all right, matt. thank you for that. the race for the white house now and our new poll showing a record high approval rating for president trump. 44% of americans now think he's doing a good job, 53% disagree but some trouble for his bid for re-election. let's bring in mary bruce for that. mary, good morning. the stiffest challenge still comes from joe biden. >> reporter: yeah, george, right now joe biden is the only candidate with a clear edge over the president. biden is now leading trump by 10 points according to our latest poll but take a look at these other match-ups. harris, sanders and warren are all in virtual or dead heats with the president, so, george, while our poll shows the president does have many vulnerabilities heading into 2020 it also shows him with a competitive, if narrow, path to win. >> being held up by the economy. former vice president biden trying to put to rest those questions about his commitment to racial equality. >> now, was i wrong a few weeks ago to somehow give the impression that i was praising those men who i successfully

opposed time and again? yes, i was. i regret it. and i'm sorry for any of the pain or misconception that may have caused anybody. >> now that right there is joe biden very clearly trying to reset, making his most direct apology to date for those comments touting his ability to work with anyone, even segregationist senators. but it took him nearly three weeks to do that and that's only a partial apology. joe biden saying he's sorry if those comments caused anyone any pain. he continues to insist those comments are being mischaracterized. while his 2020 rivals are welcoming the move senator kamala harris who took him to task for those remarks made clear this does not absolve him. she said you cannot rewrite history. >> he is pushing back saying they basically have the same position on busing. thanks very much.

to growing tensions with iran. claiming it has now exceeded the limit on uranium enrichment set by the 2015 deal which president trump abandoned last year. chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz is tracking this for us from washington and, martha, iran sending a message here. >> reporter: they sure are, robin. president trump this morning warning iran that it better be careful and secretary of state mike pompeo telling iran it could face further sanctions. but it is clearer than ever this morning that iran is violating that 2015 joint nuclear agreement unless iran gets some sort of economic relief from the very strict sanctions already in place. the country's already exceeded limits on how much nuclear fuel it can store but going beyond the limits of uranium enrichment is more serious, putting the country back on the path to possibly building a nuclear bomb. that is still a long way off but clearly iran is not backing down despite threats from the u.s. and those countries still part of the agreement. robin? >> one of those countries is

britain and they find themselves in the middle of a controversy this morning. ambassadors leaked a communication which he was -- let's just say very critical of the trump administration. >> he was, indeed. britain's "daily mail" released what they say are diplomatic communications from the ambassador to the u.s., sir kim darroch, calling the administration equally dysfunctional, clumsy and inept and questioning whether they will ever look competent. president trump quickly responding saying he is not a fan of the ambassador and had not served his country well. the british government now investigating that leak, robin. >> we'll see what happens. martha, thank you. michael? now to the investigation into a mysterious explosion that flattened a florida strip mall that left nearly two dozen injured. abc's victor oquendo has the very latest. >> reporter: the shocking aftermath of an explosion that rocked a south florida shopping center over the

weekend. >> this they heard an explosion and can see smoke. the smoke is north of him. >> reporter: this building directly across from the la fitness which sustained serious damage decimated. chaos inside the gym as people rushed outside. broward sheriff's captain todd neil had just finished working out when he heard the explosion. one of the first on the scene, carrying this woman to safety before heading back to help more people. >> it's surreal at first. you have a gut reaction, you have no trepidation. you start making your way to where you believe the ground zero or the issue is going to be. as i turned the corner i saw the damage and patients and went from there. >> reporter: in total 23 hurt, 19 transferred to hospitals. a triage unit set outside a chili's restaurant. this video was shot moments after the blast. a man dove under a tesla to dodge flying debris and that likely saved his life. >> i was thinking i could be in

alexander acosta. >> why would you cut this deal with jeffrey epstein? why would you immunize not only him but all of his friends and employees and everyone who helped him get away with this big scheme? >> reporter: michelle licata telling abc news overnight that this is the day she's been waiting for. >> the first moment finding out jeffrey epstein was put in jail was so relieving to me. i felt safer. i've waited for this one day just to happen and it's finally come. >> a press conference is expected to begin shortly where officials will go over the charges. the just released indictment allegings epstein worked and conspired with others including employees who facilitated his conduct. epstein will be in court later to today. >> thanks. let's bring in dan abrams for more on this. this will be the first time he faces federal charges even though federal prosecutors did write a draft indictment last time. >> last time he pled guilty to two relatively minor state charges and part of the deal basically putting together the federal and state and saying, look, we're putting this all into one bucket and we're saying

to you, plead guilty to these two state charges. we'll make sure you're not prosecuted on the federal charges. that deal is technically still in place. so the question becomes how are they charging him in federal court on these additional at least two charges. >> he's not a public figure. >> that's right. first how do they get past this non pros answer these have to be new allegations. these have to be ones not covered in that 53-page -- >> to avoid double jeopardy. >> and avoid this nonprosecution agreement. then you're right, very interesting that the public corruption unit. they have a unit that deals with sex trafficking and appear to be a minor part of this which should be of great concern to epstein because the ques and cod there be a char that we're seeing, so that's got

to be something from his perspective that's got to be of concern. >> this is a guy who's super wealthy and connected to powerful wealthy figures. >> it's true and that's what apparently helped him last time but i don't think people should be concerned about that this time around? why? because these are prosecutors that went out of their way to indict him. there is a nonprosecution agreement in place. you want to make this go away, you can just say, you know what, there's a nonprosecution agreement, this case is done. these prosecutors have basically said this is serious enough, we're going to go out and find these additional victims, it se. so i think that the sort of idea he's got well connected friends will help him this time around very unlikely. >> dan abrams, thanks very much. michael? >> thank you, george. now to new developments in that fourth of july road rage incident that was caught on camera in houston.

a suspect is now in custody after turning himself in accused of opening fire on a family car igniting the fireworks inside. abc's will reeve is here with the story. good morning, will. >> reporter: michael, this video is shocking and the outcome unthinkable. this morning the suspect arrested and charged while an entire family is in the hospital. this is the moment a vehicle explodes into a fireworks nightmare. this truck packed with fireworks and carrying a family of four burst into flames. overnight police say the alleged suspect surrendered to investigato investigators. he's being charged with four counts of aggravated assault. a family was driving their truck and picked up fireworks for the fourth of july holiday. after loading up their vehicle, the father got into a dispute with another driver. police say the suspect driving this light-colored ford explorer, the two cars pulled into this gas station but as the family drove away, authorities say the suspect pulled out a gun and opened fire, the bullets hitting the fireworks.

we'll get back to ginger in a moment. now two major health headlines. the first, a new study about an aggressive type of breast cancer and the second looking at a possible link between a popular acne drug and depression. dr. jennifer ashton is here with this. so tell us first of all about the study with breast cancer. >> big study. this is it out in the journal "cancer" about a specific subtype of breast cancer called triple negative breast cancer which refers to a breast cancer type that has negative receptors to estrogen receptor and the her-2 receptor making it more difficult to treat and this study, big, big numbers was about the who. we know that there have been big racial disparities in this type of breast cancer so, again, this is a deeper dive and what this study found, it confirmed past data with more significant numbers that this type of breast cancer is more common in younger women, more common in non-hispanic black women and

does tend to be more aggressive at the time of diagnosis and have a slightly worse prognosis. it's really about the who, but i want to underscore it is still the least common type of breast cancer, and women as they age, are more likely to get breast cancer in general, so we have to understand the who before we start being proactive about this. >> you remember, i was diagnosed at the age of 46 with triple negative and so good to know there's more -- >> a lot of focus on this type. >> okay, now this popular acne drug. >> absolutely. this is the biggest tool in the acne arsenal used by dermatologists, family medicine physicians, it was fda approved in 1982 to treat severe acne. it's called accutane. there had been reports of links to various psychiatric conditions including depression and suicide. so, again, it took a deeper dive at that and actually found that there was not a higher risk of suicide amongst teens taking this drug, although teens with acne are more likely to have

reception and so we decided to borrow the money. >> reporter: one of those mary -- people is mary, whose daughter's upcoming nuptials are fast approaching. >> i got married in 1977 so it was $10 a person back then. today it's 110. >> reporter: mary turned to upstart, one of many companies offering wedding specific loans. while its site lists a 20% average interest rate on this type of loan, other companies can charge up to 30%. dave girard, co-founder and ceo of upstart says, wedding loans are a great alternative to credit cards. >> a personal loan is far less expensive than a credit card. our loans generally are about 5 percentage points lower on average. >> one was for $10,000. i believe the interest was -- between 10% and 12%. >> reporter: mary is not alone. "the washington post" reporting online lenders say they're issuing up to four times as many wedding loans as they did just one year ago with many of the

media comparison culture. people are trying to top themselves, or top what they see online. >> that's right. our expectations for what our wedding should be are pretty astron astronomical because you're s seeing what everyone else is doing and all the photo booths and great food and bands. all the things and so are you to be realistic about your wedding. >> i had a doughnut bar. nobody ate them. save your money. when i was doing the research on this, this morning, i kept thinking, why not just do it on a credit card? these rates seem really high. at least with a credit card, you get points. i think you should pay for what you can afford and have a great party. why not use your credit card that you at least get something back? >> people look at the math and say i can get a better interest rate but billions of credit card points go unused every year and i don't want points to drive someone's motivation and debt is just never a good option. >> what is your advice to couples who really want to go for it? this is a huge day and want it to be that one of a kind moment. what do you want to say to them? this is -- this could really lead to a not so happy start. >> that's right.
