tropical barry is taking its m uiacng a punch and it will likely get stronger before it makes landfall. this morning, the gulf is bracing for tropical storm barry bearing down and threatening to become a hurricane by the weekend, thousands now scrambling to sandbag and evacuate. >> we take three days of clothing because that's the routine. this area right here, we always got to evacuate. >> reporter: as much as 20 inches of rain on the way to parts of louisiana as the state is already battling unprecedented flooding. the mississippi river is higher than it's ever been with a storm this size approaching and a torrent of hurricane rainfall threatening to overtop the the 20-foot-high leveeevee protecting new orleans days after previous storms flooded the city streets and with many still weary from hurricane katrina. >> we're confident that we are not going to have a duplicate of katrina, however, if you have a

storm ths muchhighe floodwalls you're going to get water in the city. >> reporter: new orleans mayor telling residents not to evacuate but to have a plan, and louisiana's governor, john bel edwards, taking action ahead of time activating 3,000 national guardsmen and deploying disaster response resources while requesting extra federal emergency funds. >> this is going to be a major weather event for a huge portion of the state of louisiana. >> reporter: on top of being a powerful storm, barry is also slow moving possibly bringing 48 hours of heavy rainfall beginning friday night and not letting up until late sunday. forecasts show once barry makes landfall, it's expected to move north through the weekend drenching louisiana but also hitting parts of texas and mississippi too. janai, kenneth. >> it's going to be a wet and potentially dangerous few days for the gulf coast. thank you, trevor. >> thank you. in the meantime, severe flooding has turned deadly in pennsylvania. police say a pregnant woman and

her 8-year-old son died after their car was swept away. up to 6 inches of rain fell in the philadelphia area in a matter of hours. we'll have your full forecast in less than five minutes. now to a possible nationwide roundup of illegal immigrants. president trump's deportation raids are reportedly scheduled to begin on sunday. thousands of undocumented immigrants are expected to be targeted leaving migrant families on edge. the threat looming for weeks. >> they're going back to their countries. they go back home. >> reporter: but now plans are reportedly underway for nationwide immigration raids. as reported by "the new york times," the roundups would target undocumented people on deportation lists. they reportedly would begin on sunday in as many as ten major american cities about three weeks after president trump warned this could happen. the result, near panic in some places. >> so this sunday do you plan to have the shades closed and extra food in the fridge? >> yes, of course, because i go

[ speaking foreign language ] >> reporter: this woman tells abc news she's been in the country for decades and has two american daughters. she says her family is now sleeping with a heavy dresser in front of their door. >> it has to stop now. >> reporter: immigration rights groups are now fanning out with cards that advise they are not legally bound to open doors to i.c.e. this morning republican senator lindsey graham is defending the raids saying it's simply enforcing the rule of law. >> to deport people who have gone through the process and lost their case to me is not cruel. >> reporter: but house speaker nancy pelosi says families are being torn apart and asked the

president to reconsider. >> as they prepare to go to church, they feel very ids. >> i.c.e. officials are unwilling to confirm the sunday raids, but they tell abc news there are 2,000 people on the agency's priority list who will be deported, quote, soon. the 2020 census will not include the question are you a u.s. citizen. president trump is abandoning his plans to add that question. the census is used to decide how many seats each state gets in the house of representatives and how federal money is distributed across the country. opponents of the question argued millions of people mostly minorities would decline to answer a citizenship question and go uncounted. the president now plans to sign a different order. it will call on government agencies to give citizenship figures to the commerce department. >> we will defend the right of the american people to know the full facts about the population. we will collect all of the information we need to conduct an accurate census and to make responsible decisions about

public policy, voting rights and representation in congress. >> last month the supreme court rejected the trump administration's claim that the citizenship question was necessary. breaking overnight, r. kelly has been arrested on federal sex crimes charges. kelly was taken into custody in chicago on 13 counts of child pornography and obstruction of justice. he was taken into custody by new york city police detectives and federal agents. the grammy winner already faces state sex abuse charges in illinois. a california town's population has dropped dramatically since the devastating wildfire last year. new numbers show the town of paradise lost 90% of its population after the camp fire. the fire destroyed much of the town and surrounding communities. time now for a look at your weather for this friday morning. well, good morning. we're keeping an eye on

the tropics, specifically tropical storm barry that continues to churns in the gulf of mexico. it's right over warm waters so it is strengthening. already seeing winds upwards of 50 miles per hour but pressure deepening, and what happens over the next couple of days is it gets closer to land turning more northerly now and heads towards land 8:00 a.m. saturday morning as a strong tropical storm. gusty winds and torrential downpours is going to be the big concern. i'm accuweather meteorologist chris nallan. coming up, the admission from google about who's listening when you talk to its voice assistant. also ahead, dozens of passengers injured after a plane hits severe turbulence. hear what passengers are saying about the terrifying ordeal. and the soaring prices of avocados nearly doubling in a year. why the rising cost and when

scene in new york city. see that taxicab there, it slammed into a restaurant. investigators say the cab driver was rear ended by another vehicle and plowed into the lunch hour crowd. at least eight people were hurt. five were taken to the hospital. neither driver was hurt. there was also no structural damage to the building. at least 37 people were injured when an air canada flight headed to australia hit severe turbulence. that flight was forced to make an emergency landing at an airport in honolulu. fortunately there were five doctors on the plane who started treating the injured. at least nine people suffered serious injuries. >> it was like a scene from a movie, like the worst possible scenario that you can think of where you see a plane about to crash. it was like that. it was just like people went whack, straight up in the air and then from there, masks came down. people screaming, kids crying. >> everyone injured on board is expected to make a full recovery. one passenger says she will

never ignore the seat belt sign again. google admits more than 1,000 private conversations on its assistant device were leaked to a european news outlet. google says contractors handed over the voice clips which are supposed to be anonymous. however, a belgium news site says it was able to identify the voices. google insists a small fraction of recordings are analyzed to improve voice recognition technology. earlier this year amazon admitted that contractors listened to audio clips from echo devices. amazon also insists the practice is done to improve its technology. wall street opens at a record high today after reaching a new milestone. the dow closed above 27,000 for the first time ever climbing 227 points. that's mostly due to new signs that the federal reserve will cut interest rates. the dow is up 16% for the year. satisfying that guacamole craving is getting a lot more expensive. a growing global demand and a

private jet as collateral as well as the home of his brother who lives in west palm beach. under their proposal epstein would wear an ankle monitor and be confined to his new york home. former boston red sox star david ortiz is said to be in good spirits after another surgery. in a statement ortiz's wife revealed big papi underwent a third operation this week due to complications from his gunshot wound. tiffany ortiz says the 43-year-old is recovering well. at least 14 people are charged in last month's shooting in the dominican republic. and a member of the u.s. women's soccer team says she was robbed at a luxury hotel in los angeles. allie long says she was attending the espys with her husband and teammates when her room at the ritz-carlton was burglarized. she says in a sweet that someone stole her wedding ring and the key to the city given to her by the mayor of new york. police are reviewing video from the hotel. a source in the lapd says the couple left their room and used the latch to prop the door open slightly. two of the nba's top point guards are switching teams.

making news, activists reporting to stop i.c.e. raids, taking to the streets to protest. >> police in the north bay make an arrest in a hit-and-run accident that seriously hurt a girl. the man behind the wheel is a repeat dui driver. tropical storm barry sweeps toward the gulf coast. new orleans could see some of the worst flooding since katrina. >> good morning on friday july 12. >> meteorologist mike nicco hass your forecast. 20 inches of rain is possible. swollen rivers, the levee systems not completely finished.

francisco this morning. >> another rally is scheduled at i.c.e. headquarters and that's where amy hollyfield joins us. >> reporter: this is the scene of many rallies. there will be a prayer vigil a francisco later this morning. here was the scene yesterday when hundreds of people gathered to protest the i.c.e. raids that are reportedly set to start this sunday in at least ten major cities, although there are reports that some arrests may have already started. state assemblyman david chu says the california legislature is doing everything possible to try and protect immigrant communities. >> son of immigrants is someone who represents a city that is a sanctuary city in a state that is a sanctuary state, we are always going to stand by our immigrant families. >> reporter: according to "the new york times," the round up would target 2,000 undocumented immigrants on dep lists.
