wreckage is still out there on the runway. looks like hayward police still keeping watch. the ntsb is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. we'll show you what it looks like from sky 7. you can see at this point this was shot a short time ago and there were emergency vehicles out there including the local fire department but unfortunately, we understand the flight instructor was pronounced dead at the scene. the student was taken to an area hospital. we understand he is in critical condition. we did talk with a witness, a young man who was passing by the airport when he heard an unusual noise. >> driving down the skywest and just heard a loud bang and came down here and saw that helicopter crash. >> hopefully everything is all right.

i just heard somebody passed away so they were practicing hovering, which was unique to helicopters. and something happened. the helicopter crashed. >> reporter: this is a picture of the helicopter we found on the company's facebook page. the tail number on this picture matches the helicopter, the tail number on the wreckage behind me. the facebook page has since been taken down it appears by the company. at this point again, investigators, the ntsb expected here tomorrow. according to the airport manager, there was no disstress call from the helicopter in the seconds and moments before the crash and there was no black box inside the helicopter. in hayward, laura anthon abc 7 news. >> thanks very much. breaking news in the north bay and just after 4:00 this

afternoon, trains were running between san rafael south of where this happened. a bus bridge is taking passengers between sonoma county airport stations. this is the fifth fatality involving smart trains in the past few weeks. >> it's been three months since the abc 7 news i-team broke this story. a 12-year-old girl attacked by a bully in an east may classroom and the teacher walked away. >> that teacher wants to give his side of the story and spoke with dan who is here with a report you'll only see on abc 7. >> the teacher said he received no training how to handle bullies or break up a fight. he wishes he had a second chance and says he should have handled it differently. jeremy cooper was a second year teacher still on probation preparing for his history class in march. >> in walks a large group of students led by the student who bullied val. >> reporter: cooper says it was planned and students that didn't

belong in the class took out cell phones and recorded a bully beating the 1212-year-old. the camera caught the teacher raising his hands and walking away. >> i called the office. i spoke to the secretary. first thing out of my mouth, it's a student in my class, it's val i don't know what to do. you need to help me. >> reporter: the beating continued for a full 40 seconds. she felt all alone and wished cooper stepped in. >> i was very shocked that he didn't do anything because most teachers just go and try to stop it but he didn't do anything. >> reporter: finally, a p.e. teacher came to her aid. >> if you had a second chance to do it differently, would you? >> of course, yeah. >> reporter: how so? >> well, i would have immediately stepped in and done what the p.e. teacher did. >> reporter: cooper tells me he had no training from the school district, the union or new teacher training program how to handle an incident like this. >> i've been told by the principal and by many other professionals you should never

touch a student, call the office. it's the principal's job to break up fights or stop these kind of interactions. >> reporter: school superintendent matthew deafuffy declined to be interviewed but a spokesman said classroom management is covered at the four-day new teacher orientation and student safety is the top priority for district employees. every adult is expected to take necessary steps to protect the children we serve. val val's mother kept her out of school after the beating and complained for weeks the a school did not address what p hah happened. after i started asking questions they placed the principal and teacher on administrative leave and they both lost their job. >> it was sad. >> reporter: he said it cleared him of wrongdoing. still he says he's lost several teaching opportunities because of that viral video so he's not awe plying to be a sheet metal worker.

you can see the extend of the damage and how the fire got very close to a number of homes on the hill. in san jose today, evergreen resident mimi told abc 7 news this is one of the hardest days of his life. >> i lost everything. i lost everything. >> reporter: late this afternoon, she found out her cottage was among two buildings destroyed by a vegetation fire that burned 47 acres. her dog bubby was home alone when the fire broke and did not survive. >> it's my baby. it's like my son. i rescued him because he was in a hurricane harvey. >> reporter: the fire near aborn road started just after 11:00 this morning. it was contained within an hour and a half but in between neighbors watched helplessly as the flames got closer to their homes. >> one of our sons called me and said, you know, do you know that the hill is on fire and i didn't. >> reporter: some neighbors stayed back to try to protect their properties. linda's husband was among them.

>> he's been spraying down the yard really and just keeping an eye out on any new fires starting up or whatever but he's been outside the whole time. >> reporter: the cause of the fire remains under investigation. >> we've got three different kinds of fire engines on this scene right now. we've got hand crews from cal fire in the department of corrections. we did have aircraft both fixed wing and helicopters working on this fire as well as dozers. >> reporter: more than 100 firefighters from cal fire and san jose responded. >> if you need them, they are there in a few minutes. really glad they are there. >> reporter: for some, a bitter tweet sense of gratitude. >> that's my life right there:it just got burned down. >> reporter: as you can imagine, the roads behind me leading up to the homes are very narrow but just moments ago, san jose police reopened the road to allow neighbors back into their homes. we're live in san jose, i'm chris nguyen, abc 7 news. >> we are coming down to the end

of the ghost ship warehouse fire trial. the jury picked at the end of april. opening statements wrapped up days later. the prosecution started in early may. the defense just got its turn in june. now the final witnesses are expected to take the stand tomorrow with closing arguments scheduled for the end of the month. today prosecutors brought two witnesses to the stand. a former oakland police officer and an atf agent. both gave testimony contradicting statements made by a ghost ship warehouse resident and by defendant derick almena. one victim's mother called the stories out right lies. >> it appears to me that he is lying and not only him but about two of his other buddies are making up stories. >> they face 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter for the 2016 fire. to find out when a victim is reached in the case download the abc 7 news app.

we'll send out a push alert when the news breaks. i.c.e. was expected to begin sweeps over the weekend in ten major cities including san francisco for about 2,000 undocumented immigrants. now while we have not heard about anyone being taken into custody here anxiety is running high in many bay area communities. abc 7 news reporter luz pena is live in the mission district. >> dan and ama, here in san francisco's mission district, it seems like everything is getting back to normal. families out here talking to friends and shopping but even though raids didn't take place here in the bay area. they tell me they are still afra afraid. rolling her ice cream cart she said she came out of hiding. [speaking foreign language]. >> she explained to us she's still afraid but had no other option but to go out and work. >> these raids are politically motivated as we know and get closer to the election that these attacks will be constant.

>> reporter: after president donald trump confirmed 2,000 undocumented immigrants will be detained by i.c.e. starting sunday. many families like this one were on high alert. do you guys have a plan? >> yeah. >> so we always say that if we do have people knock at the door, to not answer, to not even pretend like we're not home and if there is forced entry, we have a hiding spot for our parents. >> reporter: a hiding place they built years aduo. they tell me that after the announced raids, they are even more convinced secret room is necessary. the rapid response network is ready to represent any undocumented immigrants detained by i.c.e. but this weekend they did not receive any reports of raids. in san francisco, activists tried to deliver petitions to amazon callingorec giant to cut ties with i.c.e. >> amazon web services which provides all the storage for the data that people are mining and collecting about immigrants in

there are already plans to build more than 100 affordable housing units here but the construction won't start until the fall of 2020. in the meantime, the vision is for this to be a safe place for people living in their vehicles, people who have gone through a screening process to not only park but get services, too. in just a few months, this parking lot could be transformed. spaces empty now filled with campers, rvs and vehicles for people who use them as homes. >> i think it would be actually pretty good. >> reporter: john says it's better than what is happening now, people parking cars and rvs on streets in front of people's houses. >> i see it all the time, you know. it's kind of like sketchy because you don't know what is going on in there. >> i heard from neighbors said i'm concerned for those living in vans and rvs. what are you going to do about it? >> reporter: the supervisor proposed this idea making this the city's first ever vehicle

triage center with space for nearly three dozen vehicles. >> it will have 24-hour security and bathrooms and on site services and the idea is calling it a triage is to get folks out of their vehicles and into a more permanent housing situation. >> reporter: supervisor says it's more than just safe parking. there will be staff on hand to connect people with social services. >> i personally wouldn't have a problem but i think if it does become a concern, then maybe the city would have to try and see what they can do about that and how that can further improve. >> reporter: the mayor committed still for it to happen here, there has to be a planning code change and approval from the board of super vivisors. >> we have to help people get off the streets, you know? >> reporter: this isn't a done deal just yet but the supervisor said he really wants to hear from the community so that's why he's going to be holding a

another record setting day on wall street but without the big gains we saw friday. the dow added 27 and the nasdaq went up by 14 and the s&p was flat but ended in the green which nudged it the a new record close. stock in uber rose today. the same day it released the annual diversity report. the san francisco ride share company wants to be quote the most diverse equatable and most inclusive workplace on the planet. how close is it to the goal? uber has more women, more black and hispanic workers.

is over. >> jason from our abc sister station in fresno has the story. >> reporter: a day for celebration and even some high fives as park officials and visitors share excitement after seeing crews begin to switch back the names of some of the properties at jyosemite nationa park. >> today is a special day like historical. >> reporter: robert burnet has been visiting the park all his life and seeing the iconic sign restored reminding him of his youth and summer spent at yosemite. >> it brings back memories my father and mother, it is family. >> reporter: hotels and other yosemite land parks were renamed more than three years ago because of a contract dispute. the parks former concession operator delaware north filed a lawsuit saying it owned the trademark name for the hotel, curry village and other properties. but all that change monday after the two sides announced they had struck a deal to give the national park its names back.

>> the village opened in 1899 and the hotel in 1927. for a lot of people it's family history and a connection. >> reporter: the settlement won't come cheap. the current concessioner aramark is set to pay $8 million and the federal government will kick in another 4 million to change the names of places like the majestic hotel and half dome village back to their original name. no matter what happens, this settlement agreement will allow the national park to hold on to its naming rights in the future. in yosemite national park, jason al jason, abc 7 news. a man that confessed to killing a couple in 2004 was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences in pricson toda. the parents of lindsey attending the hearing. lindsey and her fiancee were camping at fish head beach in genre when they were shot and killed by sean gollon. lindsey's brother brought the dress she was supposed to wear

permit believing the truck will bring not only extra noise but trash and more. this is the foot truck in question. even though residents say the permit appears that this truck wants to operate six days a week, the owner says that's not the case. your intent is only to have it for three days. >> yeah. >> reporter: he has three street meat food trucks in the city and for a couple of years, parked without a permit. he says he's dedicated to working with the community. >> we put our garbage can outside and have our security. >> reporter: supervisor kathryn stephanie's office said she welcomes the community's robust response and her office will continue to monitor the item closely. a public hearing on the permit will happen in the coming months and in the meantime, chris is focussing on the bigger picture. >> san francisco has so many other problems but this is going to start pulling resources away

we're sad to report one of the earliest sport s casters passed away at 97. he started at abc 7 in the early 1950s right after the station first went on the air. bob's long career on tv and radio included calling games for the 49ers, warriors and many colleges. this video shows bob when he came back to abc 7 for the station's 40th anniversary in 1989. while we're taking a look back at history, all this year we're celebrating our 70th anniversary some of the first people to work in tv like in the early days to the tech community now. a whole new industry trying to invent the future. one thing they had to create is a newscast and station executives were not too sure how to handle it. imagining what local tv news would look like was especially

challenging. the cameras were huge and expensive and not suited for fast on the spot news. the first formula they came up with was a 15-minute newscast with a lot of still photos and occasional bit of film and an unseen announcer reading details. that lasted well into the 1950s even as kgo tv moved to a new state of the art station on golden gate avenue. the television industry was flourishing along with the rest of the nation's economy. >> they will know you've arrived when you drive up in the 1958 car that's truly new. the same year it showed up, the san francisco giants arrived in town and channel 7 managers decided it was time for what they call the news commentator to finally be seen on camera. he appeared in front of a big map like this and read stories ripped off the wire service teletype. william wenter was kgo tv's first commentator. >> the station management
