trump tonight, liz? >> reporter: yes, big-name republicans for this event including donald trump junior and kimberly, governor governorr ex-wife. you can see this video we got of the motorcade arriving, heavy police presence right now. secret service surrounding the hotel. we know they are here at the hotel right now but, you know, while season fran hasn't been the most welcoming to the trump family, it's still a very important place for them to raise cash. san francisco is getting a visit from a gop power couple. donald trump junior and his girlfriend kimberly gillfoil expected for the campaign. it's a rare swing for the trump family for the notoriously city which is why the location of the fundraiser remains a history. >> it's very hush, hush where it is. >> protests and people pushing

back. i mean, some ugly things have happened recently to the trump family. and i think i'd like to avoid that. >> reporter: when then candidate donald trump visited the bay area in 2016, protests got heated because he got forced to go out of the motorcade and walk the highway. why is the first family coming back now? we asked abc news rick kline. >> not self-funding, needs to raise it. it's got good figures but need to keep the california donors. >> reporter: president trump isn't the only one raking in the west coast donors. thpr cdida vice president millions in california. republicans might be fewer in the bay area but tonight many are expected to show up in force. >> republicans don't have any voice so to be able to participate in an event like that is something a lot of

people will jump at. >> reporter: tickets range from $1,000 to $35,000 a couple. this is all part of the trump campaign's aggressive fundraising efforts this cycle. we do know that president trump raised $26.5 million last quarter, that is lightly more than any of the democratic candidates. in san francisco, liz, abc 7 news. there are 24 candidates hoping to win the democratic nomination and beat president trump. the newest run to join the race is tom steyer and hosting the first event since announcing his campaign. cornell bernard is there live and cornell, you're going to hear from stier in a few minutes? >> reporter: yeah, ama. we hope to speak with him in a few minutes before his appearance here in the mission. this is a community space known for activism and hosting forums for democratic candidates who are running for president.

now billionaire businessman tom steyer who co-founded, who founded the non-profit next gen america spent decades advocating for clean air. he defended the big money his group needs to impeach and spent advocating for impeachment efforts against president trump. and online and on tv. he announced his candidacy last week after saying for months he would not run. manny who is hosting tonight plans to ask him about that. >> i'm really interested to know what may have changed his mind or was it his plan all along to run? i sense that his answer might be that he wasn't planning on running and may have been seeing how the debates went and thought that maybe there was a need for another candidate to put their name in the ring. >> reporter: manny is first up for many dell cat tick candidates on the campaign

trail. he will be the 15th candidate to come to the intimate setting to explain why he wants to be president. he plans to spend $100 million on his campaign. we'll ask him about that. full report at 11:00 tonight. we're live in san francisco. >> cornell, thanks very much. democratic presidential hopeful pete buttigieg will visit the bay area one week from today. today he toured a veteran's community project in kansas city missouri with former secretary of state jason kacandor. both have served in the military. kamala harris has taken the lead for president here in california and a new out today shows 23% of california democrats now back harris. that's up from 17% in april when she was in third place. former vice president joe biden is now in second place in california with 21%. he was leading before senator bernie sanders and senator elizabeth warren round out the top four. no other candidate breaks double

digits in california. we're learning more tonight about the rescue of two window washers after their stuck. it shows where the men was stuck. the men spent several hours dangling. mechanics couldn't get the platform to move so firefighters tried rescuing them in three different ways all at the same time. >> we were basically sending a rescue group up to the roof to try to repel down to them while we were coming down from below with area ladder to see if our ladder would reach up and go straight to the tenth floor to pull them in through the window. >> reporter: how did they come down? >> through the window. >> through that window. sky 7 flew above the scene moments after firefighters freed those stranded window washers. >> police are investigating a shooting that injured one person in hayward. sky 7 was over the scene at tampa avenue. this is near weeks community park. several cars in a parking lot were roped off with police tape.

that's what you're looking at here. police haven't released the victim's condition. they say there are no current concerns related to the safety of the surrounding community. we told you yesterday in an exclusive report san francisco's asian art museum was the victim of a ransom ware attack in may. they say the system is fine but the cyber attack put city hall's technology units on guard. vic lee is live at ci tonight with a follow up report, vic? >> reporter: dan, the city has protocols in place so if there is a cyber attack, they can isolate it and respond to it quickly. the ransom ware attack in may on the asian art museum foundation's computers raised alarms here at city hall. >> we are prepared for cyber attacks and ransom ware attacks. >> reporter: aaron believes the city is staying ahead of the hackers.

naomi kelly told abc 7 news the city has developed comprehensive cybersecurity program. >> we're assessing systems and doing routine monitoring and risk assessments and updating software on a regular basis. >> reporter: in fact, it was the city's i.t. security experts that helped restore the museum's paralyzed computer network after the cyber attack. an official there tells abc 7 news no ransom was paid. city administratior kelly says that's keeping with the city's established policy. >> san francisco isn't going to pay ransom. we don't believe in taking taxpayer dollars to feel criminal enterprises. >> reporter: once more, the city she says has insurance to back that up. >> we purchased cyber security insurance to make sure that we -- in the event of a hack or ransom ware attack or that we can replace our hardware

quickly. >> reporter: san francisco had a lot of time to build a good cybersecurity system. in 2008, department of technology specialists terry childs hijacked the city's computer network blocking officials access to the system. childs' who was arrested finally released the password but it took a jail cell visit by then mayor gavin newsom to make it happen. >> that was a big wakeup call to san francisco government and since then, we've stayed at the cutting edge of technology. >> reporter: the city administrator told us they have on going training for their employees, how to handle attachments and look for suspicious emails, changing passwords frequently. the same kind of stuff that you. what to be doing in your personal life as well. the city administrator also told us that their computers here are hacked quite frequently but so far unsuccessfully.

vic lee, abc 7 news. >> vic, thank you. an alameda county judge ruled the man accused of killing nia wilson at an oakland bart station is competent to stand trial. the judge says he made the ruling in the case of 27-year-old john lee cowell after reviewing reports. one believed he lacked competency and another didn't render decision and the third found him to be competent. cowell is charged with stabbing and killing 18-year-old nia wilson on the platform of a bart station on july 22nd one year ago. her sister was stabbed but survived. cowell is scheduled to enter a play on august 2nd. a man was pulled alive from a burning van and has two police officers to thank for saving his life. chris ryes met them today and joins us with their story and video of what happened, chris? >> reporter: good evening, ama. that rescue happened right in this very spot and to give you

an idea how quickly things turn, after the rescue, the van exploded and set the tree on fire. you can see it completely charged but two officers told me about the scary moments in between. >> that's a scary looking shot. >> it happened so quick that we just went and grabbed it and do what we have to do at the time. >> it seemed like less than 60 seconds because we saw smoke and by the time we were processing that, it was flames. by the time we were processing that, it was a rescue. >> reporter: the man was refusing to leave his van parked in the school lot in san jose when officers tim wright and chris rushed in. this image captured from the officer's body cam. >> our perception was he was having some kind of mental health crisis, and clearly was not thinking about his own safety. so that's me -- >> i have his legs down there. >> reporter: chris is pulling a

leg and it's hard to tell in this picture but mr. huff has his left article hooked around the tire so he has leverage and he doesn't want to let go. >> reporter: anothe witness showed how quickly the situation escalated. >> it was decided we have to taze this guy to shock him and get him to let go and that was the only thing that got him to let go of the van. >> reporter: the man was taken to the hospital for burns and smoke inhalation. san jose police department posted the images on facebook to praise the officers for their actions. >> we want the community to know we're here for everybody. unhoused. people with mental health issues, the rest of the community. >> reporter: that was a very close call but thankfully the two officers were not injured and did not have to go to the hospital. the man they rescued, he was put on a 72-hour psychiatric evaluation. that's all we know now hoping he

finding two black and white border collie puppies. look at those faces. they were stolen from their owner on july 8th. last monday between 8:00 and 11:30 a.m. the five to eight-week-old puppies are used for herding and work for their owner. >> abc 7 news is working to build a better bay area and follow up on stories that could provide solutions like creating housing in one of the most expensive places in the country. yesterday we told you about plans to convert a block of old abandoned greenhouses in san francisco into new single family homes. neighbors are not on board with the idea. abc 7 news anchor is live with more. >> reporter: it's the last one of 20 left. neighbors want to make it a historic landmark and today here at city hall they made their case. >> it's something that we don't want to lose.

it's too precious. there is nothing else like this in the city of fran ssan franci. you won't find anything like this. >> this man was one of dozens of people before the san francisco historic preservation commission asking it to consider making this nursery in the district a historic landmark. >> if it were landmarked, it wouldn't be stag innocenant ando continue and would be something with life for the community. >> neighbors want to turn the space into an urban farm but the developer that brought the property into 2017 is planning to build 63 units of housing. >> if you pass the landmark and encourage you to not do so today you are rejecting homes for people. >> reporter: in the end the commission voted not to start the landmarking process for the site deciding to continue the environmental review process. >> it's unfortunate in san francisco the people with money are the ones who end up with all

the influence. this is why -- this is why there are articles how san francisco lost its soul is decisions like this today. >> reporter: the commission encouraged both sides to find a common ground, something the sites developer hopes to do. in addition to houses, he's offered to contribute 20% of the land for public use and programming. >> we could build replica greenhouses. we can build community garden. we can build programs for community space to have lek cures and lessons. >> reporter: neighbors say despite the decision, they are encouraged. >> what was heartening about this was to see the community come out and to see everybody really voicing their care for the history of this community. >> reporter: so i asked her what's next and she said this is a very early decision in a long process so they have to decide the best way to move forward and i also asked her, you guys, about how to pronounce this neighborhood's name. she said it's

san francisco looking eastward along the bay bridge. these are our forecast features. we'll see areas of fog and spotty drizzle overnight and into the early morning hours. a cooler pattern will be with us for the next few days but it will be warming up again to more seasonal levels beginning sunday. overnight lows will be mainly mid to upper 50s. so relatively mild overnight and here is a look at the forecast animation to show you the development of the fog and moving locally across the bay. doesn't look like it will reach very far inland tonight or tomorrow morning but during the daytime tomorrow, as sunny skies preva prevail, we'll see fog lingering and noticeably cool with highs in the low 60s right around the bay shoreline, we'll see upper 60s to low and mid 70s and inland areas will warm up to low to mid 80s in the very warmest spots. and here is the accuweather seven-day forecast. so next couple of days, even saturday temperatures will be high temperatures will be in a slightly cooler than average

connect and means the world to us. >> children's hospital of oakland has its own tv show can today i was part of that show and did a live version for the kids that includes, well, includes what do you call it? trivia questions and name that tune and jokes provided by the kids. in fact, some of the kids at the hospital were able to come into the studio and watch the show being done there. and others who were not able to leave their rooms were able to watch us on closed circuit on their tvs in their rooms. really a lot of fun. >> they deserve to be kids. >> we get to do a lot of neat things on this job but few as satisfying as what you did today. >> you're absolutely right. i can't think of anything more satisfying. >> good for you. >> the latest social media craze

there are more than tents crowded under beneath elevated bart tracks in oakland and posing a safety hazard. the situation isn't building a better bay area, not for the people that live there,

neighbors or bart riders. >> one encampment is along several blocks near 81st avenue. laura anthony went to part and the city of oakland today to ask what's the solution? >> reporter: the homeless are building their own homes. underneath the bart tracks in oakland. like here along san leandro street near 81st avenue least a dozen wooden structures are tucked under the tracks. trains whizzing by intervals, structures that have taken awhile to build and don't appear to be going anywhere any time soon. >> it is a concern and the structures are a bigger concern. they aren't a tent. they are not mobile. as people build them up, it's a new chapter of what we're concerned about around danger associated with encampments. >> reporter: homeless encampments sparked several fires in recent months. last year a man died inside a wooden structure after a fire near the bart tracks underneath

the 980 freeway. but the buildings just keep going up. like here near the bart tracks on east 12th street, there is a multistory structure built mostly of plywood complete with a front door lock. the residents didn't want to talk with abc 7 news but a neighbor told us off camera that he's reported the illegal structure to bart police several times in recent months but it just keeps getting bigger. >> it was on bart property. the issue is if we move people off bart property, they would be on oakland property and we need to work with the city closely deciding what we're going to do. >> reporter: similar structures have been physically removed under beneath the 23rd avenue bridge where they needed the site cleared for a project. a city official told me they are looking at a two-prong solution that is using the fire code to move out those dangerous structures but then offering the residents a place in a future community cabin location. in oakland, laura anthony, abc 7

news. >> thanks. >> new at 6:00 after almost 20 years san mateo's police chief is retiring. susan got the job in 2000 and at the end of this year she'll step down before being she's the first woman to have served as president of the california police chief's association and the san mateo county chief's and sheriffs association. investigators say it could take up to two weeks to determine the cause of yesterday's fire at a mini storage facility. the fire damaged 50 storage units at the mini storage. insurance will cover some of the damage, however, almost no customers had purchased insurance to cover their individual losses. >> so many people have these storage units these days. so should you buy extra insurance for storage units? >> important question. michael finney is here with the information.

>> it is an important question. that extra coverage could come in handy for these customers. the business has its own insurance but under the rental agreement, customers are responsible for losses to their belongings and the company says most opted not to buy the insurance. still, that doesn't mean they are totally out of luck. smoke and flames were visible for miles as fire broke out at the intersection of highway four and 680. it spread to the back of the mini storage facility where some of the biggest storage units were destroyed. >> we've had some customers calling in seeing if their stuff is affected. one customer's stuff was completely gone. she's devastated. >> their belongings are gone. >> their lives are in there. their kids' stuff. their stuff. it's just -- it's hard. the phone calls are going to be really tough today. >> she reached out to more than 50 customers and so far one

purchased insurance for their belongings. that policy covers $5,000 in losses and costs up to $20 a month. if they don't have that coverage, the good news is most homeowners and renters insurance policies do cover storage units as well. however, as always policies have limits. the insurance information institute says most homeowner and renter policies include the so-called off premises coverage however, many of them will reimburse only 10% of the total policy coverage you have for your household belongings. so do cover up to 50%. if you have expensive items in storage. you may want to ask for additional coverage. most cover losses due to fire, tornados and theft but not everything. one final important, photos as long as well as that inventory and will help you recover at

all this year we're proud to celebrate the 70th an verse i have -- anniversary and digging through archives to find the most memorable moments. here is a look back at the news from the 1960s. by 1965, channel 7 became the first bay area station to shoot at least some news stories in color. but color film was expensive so it was used sparingly like for this story about soldiers at the oakland army base shipping out for the vietnam war. at the same time, the era of flower children in san francisco

was beginning. and in north beach, go go dancers on broadway were pushing the boundaries of what society considered acceptable entertainment. topless performers were hustled off to jail blamed by some for san francisco's growing image as a city of sin. >> the topless? >> quite possibly. we've been blamed for everything including the fall of the roman empire so why not that, too? >> a jury found the dancers not guilty and a few years later, hugh hefner opened playboy club in san francisco. just a look back at some of the 70 years we are celebrating at abc 7. fascinating to look back and see the early days of the station. >> it really is. you can see the rest of the 1960 special along with lots more from the abc 7 archives on the platforms including amazon fire. well, 50 years ago the "u.s.s. hornet" played a

critical role in the mission to the moon. the hornet serves as museum. abc 7 news was aboard the hornet today and features a model of apollo 11's command modular like the one that splashed down in the pacific. sailors and helicopter crews recovered the astronauts from the first two lunar missions and navy swimmer shared his memory today. >> we looked over on the horizon and we could see the command modular reentering. it was a fire ball comit tail behind it. >> president nixon flew from the hornet to hawaii to greet the astronauts the moment they came on board. another anniversary of the deadly explosion at port chicago. >> today we revisit the site of world war ii's worst home front disaster.

victims. eric thomas has >> my father was killed on july the 17th, ♪ whose bright stripes and bright stars ♪ >> the victims were given the respect they never received in life, 202 of the 320 sailors killed in the massive explosion were black. they had no training in weapons handling or in the dangers of it. >> many of them as well as outside observers knew that this situation was a disaster just waiting to happen. >> it was a disaster on many levels for atkins. she was born four months after her father a young sailor at port chicago was killed. >> there was no grave. no memorial. only pictures. >> port chicago was a major base for sending bombs, toand torped. move more, move faster, work
