7:02 am
and good morning, america. ouetr?ou're feeling great this >> i do feel better. it's that summer cold, you know. >> it is summer, indeed, right. >> it's kind of sexy. >> well, yes, robin, whoo. >> i'm just saying. >> unexpected, robin, but true. let's get to the summer temperatures. we have a summer scorcher out there, 32 states on alert, and it's not just the heat, the humidity is making it so unbearable for millions. >> you're right about that, amy. let's look at the heat index map showing how hot it's going to get. abc's alex perez is starting us off. he's there in chicago where it will feel like 100 degrees today. 116 by tomorrow, alex? good morning. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, robin. it is going be ho the oppressive heat is making getting around harder. the metro trains that run along
7:03 am
these lines will be moving slower because the excessive heat makes those steel tracks expand, creating problems. it's going to be a rough few days for a big part of the country. this morning, the heat is on as millions prepare to suffer through what could be the most dangerous heat wave in years. temperatures rising into triple digits, already causing roads to crack open in kansas. and hospitalizing seven children in connecticut, all of them suffering from dehydration and heat exhaustion at a summer camp carnival. some areas in the northeast bracing for temps to feel almost as hot as death valley. >> it is too hot to be standing here. >> reporter: in the upper midwest milwaukee setting up cooling stations. here in chicago, in 1995 a heat wave killed more than 700 people. now emergency rooms are gearing up for an influx of heat-related emergencies. >> so if someone comes in and we think it's heatstroke, four, six of us will put the individual into this ice bucket for about 10 to 15 minutes to get their body temperature down as fast as possible.
7:04 am

this afternoon. kansas city, 114. we circled the core of the heat. that slides east tomorrow. chicago gets it, detroit, louisville, of course, paducah will be included. watch this because it all moves east through the weekend and i'm tracking the core of the heat because saturday is when it settles in. sunday it doesn't let up much. we're still going to see temperatures in the mid to upper 90s in the northeast but will feel like well over 100 and we finally get break by early next week and much cooler and drier, george. >> thank goodness for that. ginger, thanks very much. we move to president trump fresh off a raucous rally in north carolina overnight right after the house voted to table a resolution on impeachment. it was prompted by trump's racist attacks on four democratic congresswomen but the president refused to back down at the rally, ramping up the attacks to chants from the crowd. our senior national correspondent terry moran was there. he joins us now from raleigh, north carolina. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, george. well, this was the first big rally the president's had since he began attacking those four democratic congresswomen igniting a racial and xenophobic firestorm.
7:06 am
it was almost as if he was road testing these new themes. last night the crowd ate them up. in his first campaign rally following days of attacking four democratic congresswomen, president trump was met with raucous chants of support and then there was this moment. >> representative ilhan omar -- [ audience reacts ] [ chanting "send her back" ] >> reporter: the crowd calling for minnesota congresswoman ilhan omar to be sent back to the country she left as a child. omar is a u.s. citizen. he even proudly refused to call representative alexandria ocasio-cortez by her full name. >> i don't have time to go with three different names. we'll call her cortez. too much time. it takes too much time. >> reporter: for days trump has hammered the four freshmen democratic lawmakers, all of them women of color, saying they

should go back to the countries they originally came from. >> if they don't love it, tell them to leave it. i'm just saying it's their choice. they can come back when they want. but, you know, they don't love our country. >> reporter: three of those lawmakers were born in america. the president's base doesn't see all of this as race-baiting rhetoric but as patriotism. >> it has nothing to do with races. it has more to do with our own values and whether they want to be an american or not. >> reporter: for the president and his campaign the strategy is to divide the country, lashing out at democrats. >> a vote for any democrat in 2020 is a vote for the rise of radical socialism and the destruction of the american dream, frankly, the destruction of our country. >> reporter: the president's crowds are always enthusiastic but it seemed last night this crowd was even more energized, more wild, revved up by these new attacks. george. >> the strategy on full display. ramp up his crowds, his base but
7:08 am
we haven't seen this kind of race-based campaign. it has echos of george wallace and richard nixon back in 1968. >> reporter: it is a classic american nativist populist playbook and the game in politics is usually described as addition not subtraction, you look for more votes. president trump as you say wants to get out as many of his votes as he can but it's more than a strategy, george. president trump and this movement are out to redefine who gets to be an american, and that's not based on citizenship, but on loyalty as he and they define it. >> and it is drawing quite a response as well. terry, thanks for that. let's bring in senior congressional correspondent mary bruce for more on the response. democrats rising in a chorus of opposition overnight including congresswoman omar. >> reporter: yeah, george, as you can imagine democrats are furious with the president's continued attacks here. ilhan omar shot back herself on twitter saying, quote, i am where i belong, at the people's house, and you're just going to have to deal. the president's 2020 rivals are also firing back. senator kamala harris called the president's attacks vile,
7:09 am
cowardly, xenophobic. she says it's racist and it defies the office of the president. joe biden says these members are examples of what makes america great, george. >> polls show a majority of americans reject this kind of attack on the congresswomen. you saw that impeachment resolution inspired by the president's attacks on the georgia house yesterday. >> reporter: this was a revealing vote. you had 137 democrats here vote to kill a move to impeach the president over these racist tweets and his recent attacks while 95 democrats voted to consider impeachment. it just goes to show how divided democrats are on this issue. now, speaker pelosi, this was a vote she had worked to prevent. she has argued that this move was premature given all the ongoing investigations up here and she is well aware of the political risk here that moving to impeach could backfire on democrats, but, george, while this fight for now is postponed, the debate over impeachment is far from over, in fact, the vote count up here just goes to show that democratic support for impeachment is only growing.
7:10 am
>> of course, robert mueller testifying next week. in the meantime on another front, mary, that 9/11 victims compensation fund held up again in the senate. >> reporter: yeah, george. two conservative senators, rand paul and mike lee, are holding up this fund. they say they're not trying to block it but add conditions and rand paul says they need to find a way to offset some of these costs. mike lee says he wants to add additional oversight but this move has sparked a lot of frustration and outrage here on the hill and from those first responders who depend on this fund. comedian jon stewart who has advocated for this is blasting these senators, but bottom line, republican leader mitch mcconnell has told us he wants it done by the end of the month. it will just take a little more political muscle. >> let's see if it can happen. thanks very much. amy? now to that breaking news overseas. a suspected arsonist setting off a deadly fire at an animation studio in kyoto killing at dozens people.

abc's ian pannell has the very latest for us. good morning, ian. >> reporter: good morning, amy. that's right. horrific scenes in japan's ancient capital kyoto as this blaze leaves at east 30 people confirmed or presumed dead. according to the authorities a man in his 40s screaming, you die, burst into the animation studios spreading some kind of liquid accelerant early thursday morning setting the three-story building ablaze. fire department officials say 36 others have been injured, some of them critically. they found more than ten people dead on the top floor alone. some of them collapsed on the stairs leading to the roof. the man suspected of starting the fire is reported to be among those injured in hospital and of has been arrested. it's not clear though if he worked at the studios or had any connection to anyone there, but the firm does make a number of anime films popular in japan and this morning the japanese prime minister said the incident is too appalling for words. robin. >> so troubling. ian, thank you. now to the massive protests erupting in puerto rico overnight. thousands of people taking to the streets doubling down on their calls for the governor to resign. the protesters getting support from some of the island's most famous faces.

victor oquendo was there and joins us now from san juan, good morning, victor. >> reporter: good morning, robin. it was a long night and a tense standoff. it finally came to a head when protesters threw fireworks at police behind that barricade. the governor's mansion just about a block away and the calls for him to resign have never been louder. overnight, thousands of puerto ricans flooding the streets demanding embattled governor ricardo rossello step down. protesters clashing with police, crowds sent running as canisters of tear gas are launched at them. some of the island's biggest stars like ricky martin and bad bunny calling for peaceful protests. puerto rican native, benicio del toro, lending his support. >> it's there for the people, put there by the people. so it's very sad. >> you understand their frustration. >> i completely understand their frustration. i'm on their side. >> reporter: times of unrest also at times turning violent.

>> can we talk to you? >> reporter: we tried speaking to employees who are still the island which is operating, but they did not want to talk to us. a former employee says what he saw inside was disturbing. photo after photo of young looking girls without their tops on. prosecutors have pointed to epstein's lifestyle and wealth to argue he's an extreme flight risk, and they dropped a bombshell earlier this week when they said during a raid of his manhattan mansion, they found inside of a locked safe piles of cash, dozens of diamonds and an expired foreign passport with epstein's picture but a different name and a stated residence in saudi arabia. >> we think he is a significant flight risk and that is why we are seeking detention pending trial. >> reporter: epstein has pleaded not guilty to the sex trafficking of minors and his legal team has argued he's willing to put up his mansion and private jet as collateral for bond, even willing to live
