morning with a test just a test. just after 5:30 this morning our assignment manager began recording water cascading on to t b endark darrow station coming from the muni line above as they were stesting their fire suppression system. >> muni was testing it last night and they couldn't turn it off. >> reporter: here's paul rose, muni spoke person. >> in that test, our drainage system malfunctioned causing the platform and trackway to flood. >> reporter: this was a routine test they do at all the stations. that fire suppression system looks like this. water runs through the main line located at the edge of the platform that transfers water to federlines that then distribute that water to sprinkler heads between the tracks. they be a huge purpose. >> this is really to help insure that if there is a fire underneath the train or on the track we're able to suppress it

with water. >> reporter: when this he went to drain the system, two leaks, one seen in this picture, began spiing water onto the muni tracks and on the b.a.r.t. train and platform below. >> i realized oh, there's something wrong. there was like water dripping on my shoulders. i was like oh, there's something wrong. i had to check twitter. >> reporter: he was late to work. >> while b.a.r.t. eventually resumed service at the emba embarcadero station, muni had to repair the leaks by capping them. instead muni passengers were diverted by taking b.a.r.t. >> b.a.r.t. is giving you a free ride to month domry station. >> reporter: muni is still trying to determine what will caused the leaks in the system. so even though you're seeing above on the board no predictions available as to when muni here at the embarcadero will reopen, i can assure you it has reopened. let's all these people, nice to see you, welcome, so it has

>> she's good at it. >> the san francisco police are investigating a deadly hit and run that involved a big rig. it began around 5:40 this morning when police say a man crossing the street at eddie and machb was hit and then dragged two blocks to fifth and market. an ambulance rushed him to zuckerberg san francisco general hospital and trauma center where he later died. abc7 news was there when officers stopped the driver of that big rigging about two hours later at broadway and battery street. the driver has been detained. we're told he is cooperating with police. the san mateo county sheriff's office is mourning the death of a correctional officer. he drowned yesterday afternoon at zephyr cove in lake tahoe according to douglas county officials. the 34-year-old served in the army and an iraq war veteran. he joined the sheriff's office in 2017 after working for the santa clara county sheriff's office.

he leaves behind his wife terry and two children. >> this next story senior rather unusual. >> it is. a couple living in the former iranian consulate building at washington and walnut streets in the presidio heights neighborhood has been evicted. they've paid their rent on time but that's not the problem. >> abc7 news news anchor kumasi aaron with a look at the issue here. >> reporter: this couple was paying $5500 a month to live in this beautiful mansion but the government says that's not enough to cover all the repairs that this house needs. and neighbors here that i talked to said they would be so sad to see this couple go and this house empty. it's a $15 million home. eight bathrooms, 8700 square feet. and the government says the people who have been rentin it for nearly 35 years have got to go. alexander and bruce owens started they'ring the home from the state department in 1984 and renewed the lease several times which included a provision that subjects the home to rent

control ordinances. it used to be the iranian could be sue lat so iran owns it but the u.s. state department takes care of it. according to the lawsuit filed by the state department, a government inspector toured the property in june 2018 and found the mansion needed 5 maryland in repairs. that's a lot higher than the rent. so the government decided to take the property off the market and moth ball it. california's ellis act allows landlords to evict tenants if that happens and they were given $11,000 and told to leave by june of this year but they haven't left. now the u.s. government is suing to get them out. the attorney representing the couple told me the couple's devastated. and says the house is more than liveable. >> the place does need some razor but they live in it nicely. $5 million worth of repairs to bring it to an incredible pacific heights mansion type but they can continue to live there for years with much, much much

less in repairs and want to. >> reporter: and he told me the couple is still living in the house and plan to keep doing so. he said the only way they can be forcibly removed is if they lose the case. kumasi aaron, abc news. >> why are the neighbors concerned about the couple possibly being evicted? >> reporter: well, it's twofold. first of all the people i talked to said they're great neighbors and been here in the community for a while and they would hate to see them go. also, they said they're concerned about the house being empty. they've had issues with squatters here in the past and said that's something they don't want to deal with again. >> makes sense. thank you. the rinters were paying far, far below market rate for that mansion. comparable mansions with six or more bedrooms in pacific heights are going for anywhere between $17,000 and $25,000 a month. that's according to real estate website zillow. >> crazy. >> for the $5500 that the family

was paying for the mansion every month, it would get them a two-bedroom, two bath apartment elsewhere in the city. >> new information today about the shuttered russian consulate in san francisco. foreign minister sergey lavrov told a russian news agency tas that is moscow is kring options to reopen what he calls unlawfully seized properties in te u.s. the trump administration ordered the closure in response to moscow's decision to cut u.s. diplomatic staff in russia. black smoke could be seen rising from that building consulate staffers turned firefighters away at that time saying there was not any problem inside. >> plans to clean up the february landslide? sauce lit tote are being delayed till september. the city council rejected bids from seven construction companies after a staff member noticed a requirement wasn't met in the bidding process. they were concerned it cld jeopardize federal funding for the project. they are expected to open a

30-day win for bids next week. >> the san francisco planning commission deciding on the future of the city's flower mart whether tore approve the project south of market. calls for demolishing ten existing buildings. they'll be replaced with three large mixed use towers with more than 2 million square feet of office space as well as room for a brand-new wholesale flower market. developed doors have signed onto the plan but will be moved to an interim location during construction. >> a hearing in the city of oakland's anti-trust lawsuit against the team's move to las vegas. lawyers for owner mark davis, the league and owners will ask a federal court judge to dismiss the suit filed by the city last december. at that time, oakland city attorney barbara parker called the move to vegas illegal claiming the team and league "brazenly violated federal anti-trust law," and the league's own policies when they boycotted oakland as a hostci

maybe misty in some spots, as well. by 8:00, the fog getting thinner and by 11:00 a.m., most of the fog back at the coast. nice and sunny overer the inlan. overnight lows will be mainly in the mid to upper 50s tonight. it will be relatively mild again with a chance of spotty drizzle near the coastline. highs tomorrow range from low 60s at the coast to mainly low 70s around the bay shoreline, perhaps a mid-70s. inland, it gets a lot milder tomorrow. a few locations will top out above 80 degrees, concord, livermore, morgan hill about 81, clover dale high of 86 likely. looking ahead to saturday, pretty much the same range. not much changing from friday to saturday. it will start to warm up a few degrees on sunday. a couple locations inland in the upper 80s, fairfield, livermore. warmer still on monday as that gradual warming trend moves into next week. here's the accuweather seven-day

service in san francisco. that's after a drainage pipe strung a leak early this morning. a resulting water fall that you see there left muni and b.a.r.t. plat forces drenched. >> a flatbed tractor-trailer was involved in a deadly hit and run in the city's tenderloin neighborhood this morning. the driver may not have the realized he had struck someone. news reporter wayne freedman will have more coming up at 5:00 >> abc word news tonight tweeted this photo of ominous storm clouds hanging oh over alton, illinois. six tornadoes were reported across the region, one death has been reported. overseas, people are still trying to come to grips with a devastating arson attack at and i may studio in kyoto, japan. w eatea killed in the fire. here's reporter ian pannell with what the attacker yelled before setting the fire. >> reporter: who are rick scenes in kyoto, japan, where this three-story building was set alight early thursday morning

deliberately. this was an arson attack, the building was full of people hard at work producing and i may films which are popular in japan. what we understand from police and fire officials is a man entered the building early on thursday morning shouting you die. he apparently sprayed some kind of liquid fire accelerant onto the ground, set fire to it. and you can see how it caught blaze quite quickly. it's the moek that normally skills people. you can see it billowing up. a number of people were discovered on the stairwell dead trying to get up onto the roof. were overcome by the fumes from that fire. the man who set fire to this building, he's the obvious suspect. is he now in custody. but he was also injured in the attack. it's not known what his motive was. it's not clear if it was a former employee of the company. of course, that's something for police officials to investigate when the man is able to be questioned. ian pannell, abc news, london.

>> a federal judge has denied bail for jailed billionaire jeffrey epstein on sex trafficking charges involving underage girls. his decision comes after prosecutors argued epstein should remain in custody because he has the means to flee and a danger to the public. lawyers for the 66-year-old epstein say he would be willing to pledge at least $559 million as collateral. >> federal prosecutors have ended their investigation of illegal hush money payments orchestrated by president trump's lawyer before the 2016 election and no new charges will be filed. michael cohen pleaded guilty last year to violating campaign finance law by arranging those payments. >> president trump is doing a little back pedaling today after riling up a crowd last night in greenville, north carolina. abc news reporter meghan tev tev is in washington with the tmptn supporters after democrats and even some republicans criticized crowd reaction from last night's

app okayed a terms of service that is basically lets the app use your photo anytime, anywhere forever. but despite the sudden alarm bells around face app, there are many apps that do this. the question is, do you know what to look out for. this is also. he's a ce owe of guardian app. >> we use a mix of in-house and commercial tools in order to analyze what data is going out from an app, what it accesses what, it does with that data and where it's going to. >> reporter: we asked him for a list of red flags when downloading apps. >> if you see the location indicator going off frequently, if when you're using a photo app you see some type of loading, when it asked, an app asks for permission and to access some sort of data and it says something about either analytics or shows in there see privacy policy. that's a red flag and means you should be looking at that privacy policy because something strange is there. the last thing is honesty on the

order every single day. i always introduced three new flavors each month. the most she's cakes have i single-handedly made were 324 for christmas. >> she would put herself out there and let people know hey, i'm trying to raise money to go to college. everybody wanted to pitch in, local farms with ingredients. anything she needed for her cheese cakes. >> we always have an overabundance of lemons every year. she called us and asked if we could have them and we were thrilled that she wanted them because we want to support her. >> i got into a few pretty good colleges after high school. but i knew that i would go very deep into debt. so instead, i chose to go to santa rosa junior college. of that was a very hard choice for me. >> i remember the night she decided she wasn't going to go to the four-year college. it was a big decision. she cried a lot. >> the first two years of my education.
