lisa, what's the community reaction to this news? >> reporter: it's mixed, really, but most are sad to see their local fire station go. >> fire station 30 on easton court is quiet today. according to city leaders this is how it normally is, which is one reason why it needs to close. >> we have about 638 calls a year from that particular station versus the other three stations, about 222100 phone calls. >> the budget is in deficit which they hope will be helped by the closure. the fire chief says public safety will be at risk. >> it's going to change response times throughout the city. we're going to go from a response time that should be -- or a travel time actually that should be under four minutes to up to six minutes. >> time made a world of difference for this woman last

schough terrorist. >> here's at abc 7, we're fourksed on building a better bay area. sometimes it doesn't mean starting from scratch. >> residents are taking on the task of bringing an old city-owned bocce ball court bach to life. >> here's the story. >> reporter: behind the tennis parks, the once popular bocce ball courts remain. they're seemingly unused. >> it used to be predominantly italian and so the bocce courts were put in to serve them. >> this man said in the 40s and 50s every day this place would be filled with people. a gradual lack of interest is how we ended up here. >> it's one of the few places you can play bocce but the courts fell into disrepair. >> it hasn't been used for over five years.

two horses were killed in a catastrophic training accident at the del mair thoroughbred club north of san diego today. the track is temporarily shut down. the accident happened the morning after opening day. one horse threw his rider and made i a sharp turn on the track. that horse collided with another horse. both horses died of broken necks. the jockey was thrown from the horse but is expected to be ok. >> these things are extremely rare types of accidents. i've been running tracks for 50 years. i think i've seen about four. >> del mar had seven horse deaths last year, including four in training meets. that's a relatively safe track record, by the way. >> a man and his wife vanished in the mohave desert says he's
