>> news to build a better bay area. this is "abc 7 mornings". good morning. it is saturday, july 20th. i'm kumasi aaron. we are going to start with a quick look at the weather. here is meteorologist lisa argen. >> hey, kumasi. good morning to you. live doppler 7 showing the fog into our inland valleys. just within the last hour, really feeling its presence over into livermore but it clears quickly. here is a look from emeryville where the temperatures have been in the 60s this morning from the east bay to the south bay. so 62 in san jose. a little cooler in the north bay, but this is walnut creek where you see a lot of the clouds there. it is going to be a nice today though with temperatures in the 80s there. right now it is 58 in petaluma. as we go through the next several hours, you will notice upper 70s by noon time inland. low 70s around the bay. it stays cool at the coast, some sun there. today the cooler day out of the

weekend. tomorrow we're bringing on the heat, but wait until you see the outlook for the next seven days. it is going to get quite toasty. kumasi. >> thanks, lisa. developing news. we are getting our first look at the man accused of killing two men on the peninsula. san mateo county sheriff's office released this mug shot of malik dosouqi. they're asking anyone that may know him as a friend, neighbor akwand answ acquaintance to contact the sheriff's office. he is accused of killing these two men. investigators say he lured them to a remote section of skyline boulevard in san mateo county on two separate nights last month. this is video from the crime scenes. earlier this week the suspect was in court for a hearing. the judge reviewed his medical records and noted that he was laughing randomly in court. all criminal proceedings are on hold until doctors have a chance to examine him. a hearing is set for august 30th to hear the results of the evaluations. this morning all lanes of interstate 880 through downtown oakland are back open after

crews had to repair this giant pothole. the four feet by three feet hole formed in the middle lane just before noon yesterday. dozens of cars hit it. drivers ended up with flat tires and the problem really caused major grid lock during the evening commute. caltrans had to close the three left lanes to patch it up. a desperate plea from an east bay women's shelter has been answered. the community came together to help venn hi house in oakland meet a deadline today but the future is uncertain. the program owes $14,000 in back represent by end of the day today. "abc 7 news" reporter liz kreutz has the story. >> reporter: donations are pouring in for the serenity house. they have to pay $14,000 in back rent by end of day saturday. >> our rent was $2,000 and went up to $3,500. it is tough. >> reporter: serenity house has been offering shelter to women in west oakland for the past decade, but this rent hike was

too much. the center is now four months behind on paying rent. >> so after scrunching around it is like we just don't have it. >> reporter: valerie harder is a board member whose own sister went through the program. she turned to gofundme as a last ditch effort to raise the funds. >> if you think about it, $14,000 is not a huge amount of money with all of the money that you see in the bay area. so why is it so hard and why is it such a struggle for us to pay the rent? >> reporter: and the gofundme has completely taken off. one anonymous donor gifted them $5,000. but $14,000 won't solve all of their problems. they're expecting to soon get some money from grants. still, as housing costs rise the challenge to pay rent won't end there. >> it has been this whole kind of systemic struggle for us to be able to just stay here and continue to do the work that we need to do here. >> reporter: so what is the plan in the long term? well, that's still to be determined. >> but the thing is we need to

be here because as long as the people are here, we need to be here. >> reporter: liz kreutz, "abc 7 news". if you would like to donate to help serenity house we have a link to their gofundme page on our website, abc7news.com. in our effort to build a better bay area, we are taking a closer look at recreation. the city of palo alto is considering a new inclusive park accessible to people of all ages and abilities. as "abc 7 news" reporter amanda del castillo tells us, designers are using another popular palo alto playground as a blueprint. >> reporter: magical bridge playground is known for the play equipment. the inclusive playground attracts people from all over like melissa hinn and her family from san francisco. >> we have one on the autistic spectrum but it has been really important to me that my kids are integrating with children who have other needs that they may usive recreation caught the attention of county

supervisors. santa clara county set aside $10 million in grants to put the all-incleesive playgrounds in each of its five districts. >> good quality, safe and durable. we love to see more of these types of parks around. >> reporter: palo alto is planning for a second to be built. the designers will draw inspiration from the magical bridge playground. private donations mainly funded the $4 million this is the woman behind magical bridge. she spent 20 years in tech and pivoted to park design with her kids in mind. >> i did not want to take my kids to two different parks. i wanted them to have a great time at the same park so it is very personal to me. >> reporter: because of villa real's attempt to build this parks. >> increasing the awareness about it and the urgent need to include everybody in the

community as t kpliept, no, it should be a community park. >> reporter: in palo alto, i'm amanda del castillo, "abc 7 news." a celebration at san francisco international airport today. you are invited to a sneak peek of the harvey milk terminal one. inside the terminal you will find a massive exhibit telling the story of harvey milk's living. doug akel visited "abc 7 news" this weeping to explain why it is so special for the bay area. >> this is really the first airport terminal in the world to be named in honor of an lgbt leader, so that's really significant. you have got a facility that's brand-new, that will really allow millions of people from around the world to learn about harvey milk's story, learn about his life and his legacy. >> nine gates officially open on tuesday for southwest and jet blew customers. eventually there will be 25 gates. the public is invited to the sneak peek celebration, it is today at noon. the convenient includes entertainment, games and chances to win prizes like free plane

tickets. abc 7's own vic lee will be the emcee. today the world celebrates 50 years since the apollo 11 lunar module made its historic landing on the moon, and there are many celebrations and events to mark the anniversary. one the "uss hornet" is located. abc 7 spoke to several ship mates that took part in the mission. >> apollo 11, this is hornet, over. >> apollo 11. read you loud and clear. >> we were looking and all of a sudden it was coming down above us. my name is john mclaughlin and i was one of the swim teams on the apollo 11 recovery. back here is where we were. this is where we went out, where we would go out and jump in. we would go from here. our job was to put the collar on the command module after it had splashed down to keep it afloat in case something went wrong.

>> when it came down the astronauts had not cut the parachutes and therefore the wind caught the parachutes and turned the command module upside down. >> the engineers were prepared for that and they had bags that they inflated from inside the command module that uprighted it. the helicopter would hover 20 to 30 feet and dropped us close to the command module. one swimmer would go out and put a sea anchor on the command module. then the other two of us would jump down into the water and we would put the collar around the command module and keep it afloat. then another swimmer came down to do the decontamination of the astronauts. >> the decontamination swimmer threw the biological isolation garments into the astronauts. it was thought they would have breathed in all of this moon dust. >> that was an excerpt from a digital story. you can watch the full version on abc7news.com, and some of the local events today include a celebration at the "uss hornet" museum in alameda and the chabot

good morning, everyone. we are taking a live look at our pier 39 camera at the sea lions this morning. they're just hanging out. looks like there might be some babies out there too. a great day to get out and about, especially if you don't like the hot weather because it is getting hot in the next few days. two women accused of stealing -- check this out -- all of this. they stole it from stores in the south bay, and this morning they are under arrest. this is just half of the

worth of merchandise santa clara sheriff's deputies recovered from their vehicle. a deputy saw two women leave the wall green's in cupertino with large bags on thursday. the store manager ran out and told the deputy that the women had stolen merchandise. more and more women are traveling abroad, not only for a vacation but to freeze their eggs. the fertility treatment can cost in the tens of thousands of dollars here in the u.s., but it can be a fraction of that elsewhere. "abc 7 news" reporter luz pena spoke with a san francisco woman who just got back from spain. >> reporter: traveling through spain is not the main reason carmel flew to spain two weeks ago. >> this is for you, my future babies. >> reporter: you heard right. that's carmel dreaming and taking steps towards being a mother one day. she traveled abroad to freeze her eggs. >> we're part of this generation that has huge college loans like never before. we're always part of this generation that came kind of age in the recession, so there were

financial implications that make it harder to start a family. >> reporter: carmel is not alone. she traveled along with five other women who chose where in spain they wanted to go while making some pit stops at fertility clinics. >> 12 days, and then the last six days two shots a night. you are giving it to yourself in the belly. the first time i actually did it to myself was the second night at the hospital, and i rallied a group of women to do it with me. >> reporter: bay area-based ovalie curated the trip and the ceo vetted the clinics. >> things are supposed to be fine. >> reporter: in the u.s. freezing eggs can cost between 15 and $25,000. she says they charge between 3,500 and $4,000, not including the trip. >> why spain? >> the reason for spain being one of the best places in the world for fertility treatment is in the early 2000s they passed a law -- i think it was around 2006 -- that is one of the most

inclusive health care laws in the world. >> reporter: the day carmel wants to getget them delivered u.s. or go through the insemination procedure in spain. >> yes, i will leave them there for now. >> reporter: now, freezing your eggs in the u.s. is not always covered by insurance, but tech companies like facebook, google and apple are using the procedure as part of their benefits for their employees. in the newsroom, luz pena, "abc 7 news." a surprise in san francisco for a nurse who went above and beyond the call of duty when off duty. he was on vacation in hawaii when a nearly 80-year-old man collapsed nearby. jason performed cpr which likely saved the man's life. >> thank you. >> jason was recognized for his efforts and got a chance to face time with alf, the man he helped ve jason a nurse at kaiser permanente. kaiser september us this video. a local startup wants to build a studio apartment in your

"abc 7 news" anchor dion lim shows us how it could ease our housing crisis and build a better bay area. >> reporter: the housing crisis on both sides, for homeowners and renters, is very real in the bay area because here in san jose the average cost of rent for just a studio apartment is just under $2,000. so joining me right now are the founders of rent the backyard, brian and spencer. give me an idea of what your company does to alleviate the problems for both the home buyer and also the renter. >> sure. so what represent the backyard does is we build a studio apartment in irbackyard at no cost to you, rent it out and split the rental profits with you 50/50. >> reporter: how big are these and how does it get made easily? >> these are about 320 to 450 square feet depending on how big your lot is. they get made fairly easily, in a matter of a hand full of months, and minimal disruption to the homeowner. >> reporter: there's lot in their favor.

mayor liccardo set forth an ambition goal in 2017 of building afford an unites by 2022. since a law passed reducing regulations on adus to make it more affordable statewide, this number of permits skyrocket. rent the backyard serves the bay area but says cities like san jose that cater to shorter permit times are more ideal. the owner of the tomorrow is mimi. give me an idea why you want the site visit done today. >> it seemed like a no brainer. i am running a startup out of my home right now and i have been financially savvy, got into homeowner early on. being able to get monthly additional rental income without any kind of hassle on my part seemed like a done deal. >> we think we can get most homeowners more than $10,000 a year, and in more places that are more expensive, if you look something like san francisco, you would get closer to 20,000. >> reporter: with dozens requests foresight visits this

week, the co-owners of rent the back year anticipate their first adu going up in about a month. dion lim, "abc 7 news." we're going over to lisa ar at the forecast. first, would you rent your backyard? what do you think? >> well, you know, it is certainly interesting, isn't it? you know what, get back to me on that. don't know about it. >> i don't either. >> there's creatures out there and, you know, kids. it is a little busy right now, but it is innovative for sure. good morning, everybody. here is live dopple 7. you can see that the fog has made its way into the livermore valley. it is beginning to clear a little bit, but making for some pretty nice pictures. we want to talk about the heat that has been just unbelievable for the midwest, the northeast and, of course, the south. here is the typical -- well, the air temperature today in chicago. nothing typical about it, but the ter mom ter will read in the mid 90s. chicago, 97. d.c., 99. you talk about the relative hugh

menity, how it feels to the body, we have dry heat relatively speaking back home. while it will feel like temperatures well into the 90s, 103 in cleveland. that's how much moisture hard t out there. most of those folks hopeful iti. back home, not so much. we have mother nature's low clouds and fog and that beautiful sea breeze. here is a look at san jose where we've got the clouds into the south bay. it has been mild from oakland to san jose this morning. low to mid 60s. 59, morgan hill and half moon bay. this is a view, check it out, from our east bay hills camera of mount diablo there. a beautiful view from the clouds above and the low clouds below. 63, concord. 61, livermore. upper 50s in santa rosa, and the way we do the heat around here, of course, we are able to deal with it because the low clouds, the fog and the sea breeze, keeping us cool or comfortable throughout the afternoon. that's in play today. tomorrow, the next couple of days, even as the heat arrivals

into the middle of the week, it will stay comfortable around the coast. the bay gets a little bit warmer and the warmer trendendendendend inland. looking ahead, we are looking at low 80s today, upper 80s tomorrow. low 90s arrive on monday and we'll keep it there through tuesday, but it is wednesday and thursday looking at the temperatures getting above average and pretty toasty in our inland valleys. 77 in fremont today. napa, 78. 79, santa rosa. it could be a lot hotter for this time of year. 66 in san francisco. we continue on the trend with temperatures at or slightly below average for much of july. we look at monday and the numbers will be hot inland, 70s around the bay, and tomorrow into tuesday about the same. but it is wednesday when we begin to see temperatures approaching 100 degrees for our friends in antioch, up towards clear lake and in the mid 90s for our inland valleys.

well, it seems that we all get them in our mailbox, those catalogues from retailers we don't want. well, now a marin county teen is hoping to build a better bay area by helping her friends and neighbors put an end to the unwanted mailings. "abc 7 news" reporter cornell barnard has the story. >> i really think it is ridiculous how many catalogues we get. >> reporter: 14-year-old jackie agrees. >> it is a lot of paper wasted. >> reporter: at the post office, recycling bins full of junk mail and catalogues nobody wants. >> it is a waste of resources and energy and paper. >> reporter: so for an 8th grade class project last winter she offered a free service to help friends and neighbors set up t mail" envelope in the post

glint here. visibility three miles in santa rosa, but here in the city we are looking at sun even down by the airport. 62, san jose and redwood city. elsewhere, it is cool in the north bay. you can see the wind blowing here from another vantage point. this will be the oer the d day with the sea breeze not strong today. 59 in napa. the gusty winds of last week are over. we will see the typical sea breeze take evening you through the afternoon and we are warming through the 70s to upper 70s around the bay. here is 1:00 when we have the 80s coming into play in inland valley. notice the colors, the darker shades say well to the sacramento value. that means that's where the heat will stay but it will change getting towards sunday afternoon. i will explain coming up, cue maulsy. >> thank you. >> multiple states are under excessive heat watches this weekend. many are gearing up for temperatures in the upper 90s and high humidity makes it feel like in the triple digits.

organizers cancelled the new york city triathlon and crews are inspecting roads threatened by intense heat. high temperatures could cause roads to blow out and medics warn parents to keep an eye on their children. >> you are talking about their body temperature rising three to five times higher than adults. >> way faster than you and i because they're smaller and can't regulate their temperatures like we can. >> power officials are confident the griddle hold after last weekend's blackout in manhattan. three burglary suspects in custody after this high-sp it happened yesterday and at times speeds topped 120 miles per hour. the driver hit three cars and it all ended when the driver pulled into a shopping center in sherman oaks. a 27-year-old compton man is in custody after handing his young neighbor a firework that blew up and it caused the boy to lose his arm on his birthday. >> they lit the firework and then they gave it to me.

i seen the fuse went down, i looked at it and it popped in my hand when i was right going to throw it. >> the 10-year-old named aaron said two neighbrs gave him a homework firework that exploded in his hand. his sister said the impact caused five car alarms to go off. doctors at uc irvine stitched his left arm into his stomach to regrow lost tissue. >> they're going to make an arm and totally going to have only two fingers. it is going to be the thumb and this one. >> the suspect has pleaded not guilty. his bail has been set at $630,000. people at uc berkley protested plans to build a telescope at the top of a volcano in hawaii. university of california is one of the main funders of the $1.4 billion telescope. it would be installed on mauna kea, hawaii's tallest mountain which is home to other
