good morning. it is sunday july 21st. i'm kumasi aaron. we're going to get started with a quick look at the weather. here is meteorologist lisa argen. good morning, lisa. >> hey, kumasi, good morning to you. a pretty good cloud deck, low clouds extend to the lower valley. we're looking at mist and drizzle. here is the golden gate bridge. believe it or not, a little sun at the coast. may take time. mid to late morning. 62 in redwood city with mid-50s in morgan hill. another look at sfo where on the peninsula the clouds have made their way in. looking at 70s here later on today. so it is in the upper 50s,

concord and livermore. overall we're trending cooler, anywhere from 2 to 5 degrees cooler. as we go through the morning, mid-morning, the clouds will retreat to the shoreline. we're looking at numbers in the 70s to low 80s by noontime. the warm-up comes inland where we'll see 90 by the delta. staying cool, partly cloudy skies at the coast with 80 at the bay. kumasi. >> thank you. developing news in concord where police are searching for pickup driver after a motorcyclist is killed by hit-and-run. the biker was trying to pass a toyota prius. the two collided around 12:30 this morning and the biker was thrown off the motorcycle. police say a pickup driver then ran over the biker and did not stop. the biker died at the scene. the driver of the prius is cooperating with police. neighbors in mountain view are calling for change after a woman was attacked while working out in creekside park. the suspect has been arrested.

this is the second attack in that park this year. abc 7 news reporter has the story. >> reporter: a popular creek side trail. noises most common, bikes, people working out, nature. at 9:42 a.m., a woman's plea for help was heard loud and clear. >> came up behind her, wrapped his hand around her mouth and attempted toift her . she began kicking and screaming which alerted passersby. the man became spooked and dropped her and left. >> the suspect, sergio martinez, mountain view police detained him after they reported him prowling around the neighborhood. >> detectives were able to determine the individual who had been detained for prowling was actually the same suspect in the attack in the park. >> i walk to work in the morning at 6:30, and i have to be very aware. >> february 25th, a woman was attacked. >> a gentleman who was a french national was staying in the

area, and he viciously attacked a woman. >> they have lived in the neighborhood for years. they want the cities to make some changes. >> over the years, it's becoming less safe unfortunately. right here, make it more secure area, you know. with lights. >> martinez is facing charges of rape, attempted kidnapping and false imprisonment. and prowling. what's concerning to mountain view police is there might be other victims out there and asks anyone with information to come forward. in mountain view, luz pena, abc 7 news. in the east bay firefighters are battling a wildfire on mount diablo. cal fire says its crews will be working overnight to put out the flames. you can see the flames in the picture tweeted yesterday. late last night the fire on summit road had burned about four acres. it's been eight months since the campfire devastated

paradise. today the town's public swimming pool is set to reopen for the first time since that fire. the crews finished painting and cleaning the pool last week. it hasn't been opened since the camp fire killed 85 people and destroyed most of the town. swimmers can now lift their spirits by taking a dip in more than 2,000 gallons of water. >> people lost their private pools in their homes. the fact health clubs had been -- had pools that were destroyed, this is the only pool people can swim in. new numbers released by the governor's office shows paradise's population has plunged by 90%. about 2,000 people currently live in paradise. that's down from 27,000 before the fire. we are taking a live look at sfo. we get a sneak peek at a newly renovated terminal at the airport before it opens to public. part one of three-phase project to make the terminal one of the best in the world. as nbc news anchor eric thomas

tells us, it's named after a trail blazing san francisco politician whose career was tragically cut short. >> how is everyone doing? >> it was fitting abc 7's own vic lee mc'd the preview of harvey milk terminal at sfo. after all, vic is one of the few, maybe the only journalist active who was active when milk joined san francisco board of supervisors back in 1907s. >> i do remember vividly the euphoria, the excitement the day he was elected to the board. the first openly gay politician elected in california. >> that euphoria was cut shut when milk and mayor were assassinated in 1998. ♪ >> it wasn't a day of sorrow. it was more of a celebration. the new terminal will open soon with nine gates for southwest and jet blue but that's just the start. >> i know we have three phases in this project for terminal

one. we have completed phase one. >> when completed in 2023, the new terminal will feature a total of 25 gates, new passenger loading bridges, and new concessions. total cost $2.4 billion. >> that was eric thomas reporting. nine gates open on tuesday for southwest and jetblue customers. as part of abc 7's continuing commitment to building a better bay area and the need to combat homelessness, abc 7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian introduces us to a 17-year-old who spends his time making care packages for the homeless. it's not just that, though. he sits down with them to find out what their needs are and asks just one question, how can i help? >> would you like a care package today? how is you guys day going? >> to say patel is compassionate would be an understatement. at just 17, he started the

homeless benefactors coalition. on weekends he spends time with the homeless. today he's in san francisco's tenderloin district passing out hygiene kits and food. >> i see them as true people. some people might see them as scary because they might have mental issues and stuff like that but i take them as regular people. >> he had a lengthy conversation with frank who has been homeless for a decade. the fact that the teen took time to talk brought tears to his eyes. >> it's nice. it hurts a little but i'll take what i can get. >> why does it hurt a little? >> because he's a kid, and i'm a grown man. >> it all actually started here in the tenderloin. he used to come here as a child to visit his grandparents who owned this hotel. this essentially is his community. >> to see that my son wants to come here and help the same community is really amazing. i think for me it feels good.

>> this is his first time volunteering with the coalition. >> being out here with him, i was a little nervous at first. it's not something i'm used to, not something we generally do, but it's been a great experience. >> it's very nice the way he's showing he loves us and cares. >> in san francisco, lisa gulezian, abc news. a senior in high school plans to hold more events throughout the year in different parts of the bay area. love that story. we're talking about a slow, gradual warm-up today? >> you got it. it's going to be just in parts of the bay. >> okay. >> we're going to pinpoint that for you. as we look outside from emeryville right now, it is about 61 in oakland. it's been comfortable there in the low 70s. we're going to keep it that way. inland numbers come up about 5 degrees, maybe more in spots. i'll detail that forecast for you coming up. >> thanks, lisa. also ahead, millions dealing with extreme heat this weekend.

tensions are rising between iran and western countries. new videos shoes an iranian revolutionary guard seizeing a british tanker for, quote, violating international regulations. abc's elizabeth has more on the u.s. and uk's response dramatic videos when a iranian commander seized a british oil tanker. masked troops dropping from a helicopter as the ship traveled to strait of hormuz. they claim it violated international maritime laws hitting a fishing boat and failing to respond to that crew's calls. the 23 crew members on board could be held until iranians complete their investigation into that collision. the british government called actions dangerous and illegal.

>> we spent a long time this afternoon discussing how we could guarantee safety of british international shipping. >> president trump deployed more troops to the middle east because of iran's threat. >> we've seen no indication that the iranians are prepared for fundamental change the direction of their nation. >> tensions have been growing since u.s. with drew from the nuclear deal and imposed sanctions on iran. >> this goes to show what i'm saying about iran. trouble, nothing but trouble. >> this incident coming just days after the u.s. claimed one of its warships downed an iranian drone in the same area. >> downed a drone yesterday. there's no doubt about that, right? >> no doubt about it. no. we shot it down. >> iran says this video is from the drone the u.s. claims to have destroyed time stamped after the drone went down. elizabeth hur, abc news, new york. an american woman and her australian boy friend were killed in canada near the alaskan border. this morning canadian police are

working with fbi and australian police to investigate. family members say china from north carolina with us on a summer road trip with lucas fowler. they were exploring canada's national parks. canadian police say their bodies found on monday near hot springs in british columbia. they say the couple had been shot. >> nothing to indicate their deaths are linked to any other active and ongoing investigations in that area of the province. >> police say it is too soon to tell whether this couple was targeted. new details are emerging this morning after a high-speed police chase in los angeles. some of the suspects are actually from the bay area. friday's chase reached speeds of more than 100 miles an hour on freeways and streets, through l.a.'s san fernando valley. lapd believes the three men inside the car had been breakin more and more suspects tied to the bay area. >> we have crews comprised of gang members from the greater

oakland and san francisco areas that are regularly visiting los angeles for a particular purpose of committing burglary from vehicles. if you have any plans of cominge will catch you. >> the lapd captured all three suspects after they drove into a shopping mall's garage in sherman oaks. a school district in pennsylvania is facing backlash after it threatened to send children to foster care if their lunch bills weren't paid. wyoming valley west school district sent a letter to 1,000 parents, this letter. it was an effort to collect nearly $20,000 in unpaid lunch bills. the letter states that children could be removed from their homes if their parents didn't pay up. district officials had differing opinions on this letter. >> hopefully that gets their attention. certainly did, didn't it? >> when i first read the letter, the top of my head only came off. the only thing missing was when

>> stesentatives expressed concern saying the letter was callous and never should have happened. now the district admits it went too far. it's considering filing liens on properties to get those lunch bills paid. millions of americans continue to deal with stifling, life threatening heat. triple digit temperatures forced many outdoor activities to be canceled. here is abc news report ereport. >> reporter: severe storms fueled by the heat creating a new emergency. hundreds of thousands in michigan are without power while temperatures outside feel like they are in triple digits. >> i don't know if it gets any hotter than this. it's not the heat, it's the humidity that's the problem. >> in new york city, still investigating the cause of a blackout this weekend, the mayor questioning how much stress the power grid can handle during this heat wave. >> the problem is we still don't have a clean answer about what happened last saturday, which is not inspiring confidence. we're keeping a close eye on con ed. >> along the i-95 corridor, millions melting in the

humidity. in boston where there's relative humidity, some finding relief in water parks, same in south carolina. more than 170 million across the country enduring potentially life threatening conditions. this infrared camera showing how hot it feels. >> it's sucking the life out of us. >> what are you doing to stay cool. >> eat ice cream. >> definitely keeping them hydrated, having them drink lots of water. >> officials across the country trying to avoid scenes like this one in atlanta reminding parents not to leave their children inside cars. the humane society in toledo on patrol looking for dogs in this one that were left out in the heat. officials delivering strong advice to stay out of the sun and stay hydrated. they are encouraging children to remain vigilant, check on neighbors. if you see someone in distress, call 911 immediately. abc news new york. >> meteorologist lisa argen tracking the forecast. thankfully not that hot, lisa. i do like it warm, but that's a

little too warm. >> exactly, kumasi. we'll look at a little bit of relief in just a moment. for us, we'll bring on the heat. slowly by the middle of the week, our warmest temperatures are inland. live doppler 7, low clouds, fog. it's great out there. mist and drizzle as well. you may need your wipers as we look at the pattern. this is the ridge of high pressure that's going to build in to the bay area. it's going to build in and allow for the heat to encompass much of our inland valleys. near 100 bit middle of the week. this low pressure keeps clouds, on-shore flow with us throughout the next seven days. how hot is it? upper 90s northeast boston, new york, d.c. look at that, 77 in chicago. it's raining there. so they do have high humidity but they have got some relief from canada. we're going to spread that relief to the north and east. in the dark red just south of chicago looking at an excessive heat warning. that involves the northeast from boston to d.c. and a heat

advisory north, south carolina, western tennessee. it is getting slightly better. more improvement as we get to monday. check out the south bay. beautiful view here. mostly cloudy, 56, san francisco, 61 in oakland, 62 redwood city, mid-50s morgan hill and half moon bay. mount tam, deck of clouds, mist and drizzle headed over golden gate bridge, 53 petaluma. it's cold. 52 in santa rosa, upper 50s concord and livermore. the deck of low clouds from walnut creek. it has definitely allowed for a damp pavement below it, but this continues to compress and shrink as we go through the next several days waking up to clear sky by tuesday inland with that fog just confined to the shorelines. we've got the mist and drizzle, warmer day by 5 or 6 degrees, our friends in fairfield and livermore valley. the heat as it builds inland, keeping it cool at the coast. 63, 67 do you want over in oakland once again low 70s.

how about 85 in walnut creek. you head further inland out towards antioch. you will hit about 90 degrees. the rest of you in the south bay, 85, 81 santa rosa, 79 napa, 80 in san rafael, concord, livermore, 87. taking it into monday. warm inland, upper 80s, low- to mid-90s. 60s and 70s across the bay. a little change here into tuesday. it's wednesday when we're looking at the warmest numbers. near 100 degrees up towards clear lake, also out towards the delta and keeping it comfortable closer to the ball. 80s around the bay, the warmth inland today with patchy morning fog clearing by mid to late morning. looking at the numbers slowly climb further into monday. tuesday we have the wide range. wednesday and thursday it's hot inland. keeping it very comfortable at the coast. download accuweather app and see temperatures hour by hour.

the bay and along the shoreline. root for a warm-up, route 56, san francisco 56, 62 redwood city and walnut creek you can see just a little bit of that low cloud deck. cool in the north bay, mist, drizzle, cooler than yesterday at this time. 3 to 5 degrees cooler but the trend reverses today as we look at numbers around 9:00. 60s and 70s. look at those oranges come into play later in the day inland valleys. well into the 80s in lyndon. by later afternoon, comfortable around the bay. the sea breeze kicks up along the coast. we'll talk how hot it's going to get inland coming up. kumasi. >> thanks, lisa. new this morning tens of thousands of people in hong kong are demanding an investigation into police brutality. this video from shows them marching on the street. they say police have used violent tactics against pro democracy protesters. massive protests started last

month over a bill about extradition. hong kong's leader has since declared it dead but many want to resign. protesters are concerned about civil rights. president trump is stepping up for popular rapper. asap rocky has been in prison in sweden for more than two weeks after an altercation. he says it was self-defense and he has a video to prove it. white house coordinator has more in the effort to free him. >> reporter: in an unusual telephone call pleading with an ally, prime minister of sweden, to intervene with asap rocky who has been detained there for two weeks. trump tweeting, he assured me he would be tweeted fairly. i assured him he's not a flight risk and would personally vouch for his bail. he's in his third week in jail. prosecutors caught this on camera on the streets of

stockholm. tmz obtaining this video of june 30th altercation that landed the grammy nominated artist and two back-up performers behind bars. without criminal charges the artist maintaining he acted in self-defense posting this instagram allegedly showing the moments leading up to that fight. >> we not trying to fight y'all. we not trying to go to jail. two men appearing to follow the group, even throwing headphones at the rapper's bodyguard. tonight one of those men under investigation but neither in custody. the rapper detention sparking outrage. the first lady and kanye west making the case to the president he should get involved. this coming as president trump deals with a racial firestorm after he tweeted suggesting four minority congresswomen should go back to, quote, the equipment infested places from which they came, and then later stood silent as crowds during his rally chanted "send her back." in the oval office friday the president saying he's received many calls about this case.

re shlesa don't panic but keep that in mind. >> oftentimes a company will close an underperforming store. so i don't want you to be alarmed by one particular brand because you see one store closing. when you start to see going out of business and liquidation sales multiple stores for any pick company, then it is time to think about customer reward program, gift cards or any perks you have with that establishment. >> shelley says it's best to use your gift cards soon after receiving them. she said those not yet used should be put in your wallet or placed next to the computer where you do your online shopping. >> have a plan and process for your gift cards just like you would any financial instrument. you don't throw your debit card on the dresser as you head out each day, so don't do that with your gift cards either. >> that was michael finney. another reason to move fast with charming charlie's is the store open today could be closed
