overcrossing at the tolls right now. some usual slow and go traffic on westbound 580 from tracy to dublin, 33 minutes. elsewhere, pretty quiet. a nice drive through the dublin grade to mission boulevard in fremont. northbound 85 looking great from highway 101 to cupertino in the sbai. we have new details this morning on changes sfmta is making after that deadly crash on taylor and o'farrell streets in san francisco. sfmta met with community leaders in the tenderloin to discuss traffic safety concerns. three weeks before the crash, sfmta reduced taylor street from three lanes to two and added white buffer zones. there are also plans to widen the crosswalks. one neighbor suggested changing the timing on the lights. reisdey.ard it is to walk

in a crosswalk, by the time you get to the middle, it's already red. that's not right. >> sunday's crash killed benjamin dean, and his wife kelly is still in serious condition. the driver kelsey cambridge was arrested. for more on this story, you can go to abc7news.com or the abc 7 news app. it is free to download. a 26-year-old man is in police custody after authorities say he went on a 12-hour killing spree fatally shooting four people and hurting two others across l.a. the lapd says gerry zaragosa unleashed terror yesterday. according to investigators he first attacked his father, brother and mother. the two men were found dead at the family's home. the mother survived. zaragosa is accused of killing a female acquaintance and hurting her friend at a north hollywood gas station. he then turned his attention to an l.a. metro bus and shot and killed a random passenger. >> i was on the bus. i got on the bus at van nuys. i actually saw the guy who was

shot get on the bus with me. he dragosa's cell phone and found him about 12 hours after the first shooting. this morning the lapd is trying to determine a motive for those killings. a murder suspect wanted for a fatal shooting at a concord hotel six -- i'm sorry -- earlier this month has been arrested in south dakota. the u.s. marshal service picked up 32-year-old adam renfro. he and 40-year-old robert brown are suspected of the shooting at the clayton motel. brown is still on the loose. according to the east bay times, concord police are trying to extradite him back to california. developing news out of washington, republicans have blocked aggressive legislation to protect american elections. special counsel rer

francisco, that's also green at 51 minutes, and no problems on highway 17 northbound from highway 1 to los gatos. new details about a violent crash ifrancisco's bayview district. we first told you about this yeed on abc 7 mornings. police say the driver of the car slammed into a fire hydrant and took off before police arrived on the scene at third street and carroll avenue. it happened just after 1:00 yesterday morning. authorities say the passengers did not cooperate with officers investigating the crash. three girls ages 11, 14 and 17 and a 19-year-old man were injured. one suffered broken bones. the other injuries were minor. all are expected to survive. an emerging trend in the housing crisis. what san francisco's planning department has started noticing. edible amazon box. if you or someone you know loves

we talked to riders and to people in charge of improving b.a.r.t. you can find those stories on our website, abc7news.com. four of the world's biggest car companies have cut a deal with california promising to adhere to a set of strict emission standards. ford, honda, bmw and volkswagen have all agreed to fuel economy standards of 50 miles per gallon for new cars by 2026. that agreement is a rejection of the trump administration's plan to roll back federal vehicle emission standards to 27 miles per gallon by 2020. republicans and energy companies calling this a agreement a political move. the co-founder of san francisco e-cigarette maker juul faced tough questions on capitol hill. james monsee says yesterday juul was developed for adult smokers who want to stop smoking. he says the products were not intended for underage teenagers. an east bay congressman says that monsees is, quote, an

it's been out there for a little time. you could see slowing at the scene. i also want to give a heads up for commuters. caltrans will temporarily close the lower half of the manzanita park and ride lot in mill valley starting today. a high tide is expected to floods it for the next several days. so the lower lot won't reopen until a week from sunday. >> frances, thank you. new developments at the oakland airport where we learned i.c.e. was flying tens of thousands of detainees. >> something the port commissioners say they didn't know. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield live at the our port. good morning, amy. >> reporter: good morning. there was outrage last night over what has been going on at this airport. people passionately spoke out last night at oakland's board of pofrt commissioners. that's the board in charge of the airport. people wanted to know why the port would allow i.c.e. to fly detainees out of here, a

sanctuary city. the port said it did not know it was happening and is investigating. speakers last night said they want to make sure this doesn't happen again. >> we just want no use of our airport by i.c.e. it's an agency that is right now working on behalf of a government that is making public threats against the immigrant community. >> reporter: i.c.e. released this statement saying i.c.e. made an internal operational decision to discontinue the use of charter flights out of oakland in october of 2018. the agency does not share specific logistic details pertaining to detainee transfers. the big question is if these flights violated the city's sanctuary policy. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. developing news out of oakland. firefighters are watching for flare dups this morning after a

two-alarm fire started last night. >> you can see the flames in this video from the citizen app. the building appeared to be under construction. fortunately no one was hurt. >> on the peninsula investigators looking for more victims of a man arrested on sexual assault charges involving young boy. 47-year-old randolph haldeman is charged with two counts of lewd and lascivious acts on a child under 14. police say the crimes date back to the 1980s. haldeman is a former photographer for a youth swim team in menlo park. we're hearing from the owner of the tesla involved in last week's deadly crash in san francisco. albert kim was not driving the car at the time of the crash. he rented it out to 21-year-old kelsey mariah cambridge. kim says the car's data is corrupt in the five minutes prior to the cash. the dash cam footage he was able to see shows cambridge driving safely.

>> i'm surprised because she was very slowly driving and crossing market street, very casually and slowly. you could hardly believe that she would just accelerate just like that. >> police say cambridge was speeding through a red light when the crash happened. she has been charged with involuntary manslaughter. meanwhile kim has turned over the car's thumb drive to police. they are trying to get dash cam footage from the moment of the crash. we've been closely tracking this story on abc7news.com. to receive the latest information as it happens, download the abc 7 news app and enable push alerts. mta hired a dedicated project manager to address ongoing delays in the central subway project. abc 7 got a tour of the construction happening in the tunnel that's 100 feet below ground level. the 1.7 mile tunnel runs between stockton street and connects soma to union square in chinatown. the subway was scheduled to begin operations in deese of 2018. that date keeps getting pushed back. mtas newest project manager has six weeks to come up with a time

estimate on this $1.6 billion project. >> the first priority, besides everything else, is to look and see how much time it will take to finish this job and start running the trains. >> most delays have occurred in chinatown where workers are trying not to disturb businesses above ground. the new opening date for now is early next year. the central subway could extend beyond chinatown if there's enough interest. today a survey gauging public interest on extension routes is closing. sfmta has particular interest in an extension that goes to fisherman's wafr. doctors in milwaukee, wisconsin are sounding the alarm after eight teens have been hospitalized for lung damage. the one thing they have in common, they used e-cigarettes. they suffered shortness of breath, fatigue, weight loss and chest pain. physicians are not sure when and if those symptoms will subside.

today but with sunshine. a little dryer air, mid 80s this weekend. natasha. take a look at this. new jersey state police are looking at where this runaway tire came from. it rolled down the highway in edison. it rolled down the median, bouncing to the other side of the car and slammed into a car. it first clipped a mother's car with her three children inside. her husband was driving behind them in a jeep praying it wouldn't hit her and his children. fortunately no one was hurt. the tire appears to have come from a dump truck. >> whoa. garlic, garlic and hopefully breath mints. the 2019 gilroy garlic festival opens in less than four hours. tens of thousands of people are expected at this famous three-day event. yes, the cooking has already begun as abc 7 news reporter anser hassan can see and smell. >> reporter: good morning guys. organizers here say every year they like to try something new.

this year garlic frog legs. i'm not going to try it, but i hear it's good. they've been cooking for about an hour now. behind me the chefs are warming things up with these flare-ups. this is where they cook garlic calamari and scampi, the signature dish of the festival. the main draw is the food and garlic. this year two tons of garlic was donated to be cooked. where there is food there will be chefs, last year's winner of the show master shared, jerron hurt is here. he says cooking at the gilroy garlic festival has been a bucket list for him. >> it's a staple. goes good in everything. like one of those aromatics, parsley, rosemary, lemon, that makes every dish better. like paula deen loves butter, i love garlic. >> you one of the largest producers of garlic in the

heading to the gilroy garlic festival. an earlier accident on highway 29 in calistoga has been cleared. normal slowing westbound 580, lighter than normal from tracy to dublin. it looks like westbound 4 got slow as well. antioch to concord, 20 minutes. distracted driving is a problem for drivers of all ages, but apparently especially bad for older americans. aaa tracked drivers from 21 to 75. they found on average drivers between 55 and 75 took their eyes off the road about eight seconds longer than those between 21 and 36. taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds can double your chances of getting into an accident. part of building a better bay area involves having pride in your hometown. the sharks will be showing pride in a few way. the sharks are teaming up with others to make this massive free-hand mural happen along the alameda in san jose.
