alameda, santa clara and san francisco as you can see in the chart. >> abc 7 news leslie brinkley joins us live now from walnut creek with a solution to help the homeless that seems to be working. leslie? >> reporter: well, eric, well nut creek police decided why not try something new to keep the problems that homelessness creates from mushrooming out of control here? so they assigned two full-time officers to focus exclusively on homelessness for now. matthew chase has been homeless for 12 years. his bags were stolen so his only belongings is his cigarettes and lighter. he sleeps in walnut creek. >> i'll sleep on the side of the building or something. i don't mess with them or their customers. >> reporter: the complaints about the homeless are on the rise. some worry about safety. >> they could be on drugs.

you don't know. they could be desperate for money. >> reporter: walnut creek police field 3,000 calls a year related to homelessness. that's about ten calls a day so they thought they would experiment with assigning two full-time officers to respond to all of those escalating calls about encampments, littering, trespassing and panhandling. >> a lot of the time it's people shopping downtown and really don't want to be bother bid people panhandling, aggressive panhandling. we get a lot of complaints about it. we have a lot of people are concerned that walnut creek will turn into some of the neighboring cities and close neighbors like san francisco. >> reporter: officer clemente and silva volunteered for the program that launched in mid june. they have 94 complaints and made 25 arrests so far. mostly for trespassing. they have also contacted 213 homeless and referred 90 of them to services to address their needs and retrieve and return shopping carts.

encampments are moved, police say many of the homeless hang out along the creek often out in front of local grocery stores armed with signs do you think the police effort is helping? >> yes, it is. >> reporter: it's noticeable? >> yes. >> reporter: two officers i think is not even close to being sufficient to address the problem. they could use two officers just around the bart complex. >> reporter: so far wall net creek have been getting great feedback on the program. eric and ama. >> leslie, does this plan have actual long term to essential. the goal here is that police officers need to know the names, first name basis with the homeless in walnut creek for the homeless to know those officers and get the help and so there is talk of assigning these two

on the weather, spencer? >> eric and am a, feels nice an comfortable. breeze and relatively cool but warm inland and will be hotter this weekend. you can see mainly sunny skies away from the coast now. current temperature readings are mainly in the 80s in the inland areas and a few locations topping out at 90, 92 and a heat advisory in effect as you can see from 11:00 a.m. tomorrow, 11:00 p.m. sunday for most interior sections of the bay. high temperatures both days in the hottest locations will range from 100 to 105 and also heat advisory in effect for a large area in the central valley and other parts of southern california. on we go to spare the air today as you know is a spare the air day and we have spare the air days tomorrow and sunday, as well. the poorest air quality tomorrow will be in the inland east bay and santa clara valley and a little improvement sunday but we expect to see poor air quality again sunday in the inland east bay. that's a look at what is coming our way with the headlines. i'll give you a closeup look at

temperatures projected high temperatures where you are in just a few minutes. eric and ama. >> thank you very much. in sonoma county this weekend, they are expecting heat and a sold out crowd at sonoma raceway and while they may be hot, that may be a mild distraction as the association's nationals come to town. wayne fredman is track side. trk what's the latest on the fire? >> reporter: i think i can hear you at this point. i put these on. we began doing a story about heat. we may finish doing a story about deafness. every time one of these cars go by, car alarms go off in the parking lots. that's how much vibration they are throwing out. we can hear because what goes together better than drag racing and heat? in aboea bng a drag? we know a place where they are taking that literally. >> i love the action.

freedman. >> the races are on. thanks. use the abc 7 news app to get alerts about the dangerously hot weather where you live. the app lets you customize the forecast. new at 6:00 a san jose police officer is under arrest on gun and drug charges. officers with the sunnyvale department of public safety arrested john thompkins this morning after searching his house and finding firearms and illegal drugs. he's been booked on felony and misdemeanor charges. in the south bay, six cars collided late this afternoon including a police car. it happened in san jose. ambulances took several people to the hospital including children and a police officer. one of the accident victims told abc 7 news a police car was going through the intersection with lights flashing when the collision happened. >> he came through. turned his lights on, in the intersection and as he

got to the eastbound lane he got hit. >> after the impact, several other cars coal lieldllided in reaction. son j san jose police said they should be okay. >> two high-speed burglary suspects are in custody. police took off after this nissan altima. the chase ended in redwood shores when the nissan crashed into another vehicle. police arrested the passenger but the driver ran off. >> we're not sure if he is armed. it's appropriate to treat someone as if they are armed and dangerous. this person did run from the police. we're not sure why he ran from the police if he has a warrant out for his arrest or if he did have a gun on him. >> officers did arrest that suspect a short time later. they say he was subdued by a canine unit. burgla tools, narcotics and stolen merchandise were stolen from the car. in san francisco, one neighborhood is getting a lot of attention, the problem, it's

been for the wrong reasons. lyanne melendez looks at changes being made to draw attention for better reasons. san francisco mayor london breed knows her city full of challenges must also have positive outcomes. for example, the civic center area is once again a designated community benefit district, a cbd where local property owners tax themselves to fund improvements to the neighborhood. that money goes towards trash and graffiti removal, pressure washing the streets and public and organizing events in public spaces like this one. >> at times property owners want to come together and additional services to enhance the commercial districts, neighborhoods beyond what the city offers. >> our hope is that we hope people. our hope is that we help change and save lives not just because people don't want to see it, but because these are actually

people. >> u.n. plaza is being used more and more to serve people. those on food stamps are given $5 chips to buy more produce. there is a farmer's market on weesdays s fray c market. >> do you think it has a psychological effect on people, residents? >> i think it is does. >> what about this homeless man, what kind of psychological effect does this have on him. how does this help you? >> i mean, it's just a cool place to hang out during the day. >> reporter: a series of unfortunate events led him to live on the streets. first an eviction followed by surgery on his knee. >> things went downhill from there. >> reporter: medical reasons and then were you taking drugs? >> yeah, painkillers. >> reporter: he says at least the city is trying to do what this street plaque says, helping to reaffirm the faith. in san francisco, leeayanne

cancer suffered by alba and alberto. the judge reduced the jury's award from $2 billion to $87 million because the amount surpassed constitutional limits set by the supreme court. roundup is owned by bayer which plans to appeal. this is the third case where a jury's damages have been greatly reduced by the judge. in march, a federal court jury awarded more than $80 million to edwin hardeman whose cancer is in remission. a judge reduced and that award to $25 million. last august a san francisco jury awarded $289 million to former school grounds keeper dwayne johnson, a judge later reduced the award to 78 million dollars. stocks are notching more record highs on wall street. the dow closed at 27,172, that's close to but not quite a record. the nasdaq and s&p 500 closed at record highs. stocks are up thanks to some

local companies and that news leads tonight's bay area business watch. stock in google's parent company soared almost 10% today. late yesterday the company revealed a quarterly profit and revenue that far exceeded wall street's expectations. diddo for twitter. the company saw its stock rise close to 9% today because of the strong quarterly report. twitter says revenue is up and so is the number of daily active users, 139 million in total. the bay area is home to some of most valuable companies in the world and until recently, very few of those companies were founded by women. >> that's part of our on going efforts to build a better bay area, kris reyes sat down with one female founder who was doing her part to change the numbers using lessons she learned from building her own billion-dollar company. >> reporter: these companies are part of a club 300 plus and held

and valued at more than $1 billion. what's known unicorn status. when that terp was coined in 2004 there was not a single unicorn with the female founder. >> i have a tipping point for a lasting change. this is the first year ever in several billion-dollar companies founded by women. >> reporter: she is one of them. at the beginning of the year, confluent the data software company she co-founded was valued at $2.5 billion. putting her in this small club. 13 other companies with a female founder. small number, big leaps. considering that female founded unicorns make up less than 15% of the landscape. >> i think it's about a leak in the pipeline, right? it's about this ability, inability to cross the credibility zone. at some point you get tired, tired of fighting the fight.

hill and half moon bay at 59. we have fog hovering over the golden gate now and temperature readings 75 santa rosa and petaluma 74 and 85 at livermore. it's still quite warm but not hot in our inland areas. it will be tomorrow. we're looking at the fog going to swallow san francisco looking westward. these are our forecast features. we'll have excessive heat in our inland areas this weekend both days we can expect high temperatures at or above 100 in numerous locations and a spare the air alert is in effect today through sunday and here is a look at the heat advisory that covers virtually all of the interior sections of the bay area in effect from 11:00 a.m. tomorrow to 11:00 p.m. sunday and 100 to 105 and higher where highs can reach up to 110 degrees and of course, as i mentioned today was a spare the air day as well tomorrow and sunday. so the poorest air quality tomorrow will be in the inland east bay and the santa clara

valley. it will be poor again in the inland east bay on sunday but we'll see modest improvement in the air quality in other regions. forecast an missiimation shows e of clouds and locally inland tonight. about 8:00 tomorrow morning we'll see the fog pull back to the coastline. midday it will be away from the coastline north of the golden gate so a mainly sunny day. overnight lows, though, won't be very low at all. we'll see mild overnight lows, mainly upper 50s to low 60s to the coast a little cooler. let's look at tomorrow's projected highs. 102 clover dale and over to the east 101 fairfield and 102 antioch and 103 concord and numerous other locations will be in the mid to us and around bait shoy shoreline, it'g to be just as hot on sunday similar range with many inland locations topping out at above 100 degrees, lots of upper 90s on sunday but notice the sharp

cool down coming our way on monday. i mean, significant drop in temperatures. 10 to 12 degrees in some locations from sunday's highs to monday's highs. similar pattern on tuesday. so here is the accuweather seven-day forecast. try to stay as cool as you can and in the shade over the weekend, but nature will do its job for us on monday and tuesday and for most of next week, we'll see temperatures in a more comfortable range and certainly a more tolerable range. by the way, larry beil sent me an interesting piece of video. listen to his narration. >> it is so hot in the east bay, these guys are in the yard trying to avoid becoming roast turkeys in this heat. >> those are turkeys perched up in tree limbs and wherever else they could find a way to get out of the sun and larry, of course, our super photo journalist that he is was kind enough to send us this little piece of weather news. >> they were looking for shade. >> they were. as we all will be over the

board lovers and environmentalists in the east bay. >> five young birds were released into the wild today two weeks after they survived a tree collapse that killed nearly two dozen members of their species. there were five in this cage, survivors of a tragedy about to be released, one couldn't wait. >> self-release. [ laughter ] >> are we ready to go? >> along with them, three black night herons, oakland's official city bird were also released into the wild at the marsh along the regional shoreline. >> we did a rescue effort removing every egg and chick from that tree. >> this is that tree. a sentcentury old fi in downtown oakland. it was a nesting area for birds. >> that first day there were 18 birds that were dead on site from the fall and then the other 18 that were on the ground

arizona, california and new mexico. but the funds were frozen by a lower court ruling in may and again on appeal this month. the justices voted 5-4. house speaker nancy pelosi is down playing her feud with freshman lawmaker alexandria ocasio-cortez. the two congresswomen met behind closed doors after weeks of public friction between the democrats. ahead of the meeting, ocasio-cortez called it nothing too climatic but there was a photo tweeted of them side by side. >> we sat down today and had a good meeting and the congresswoman is a very gracious member of congress, so we had a very positive conversation about our districts and how we represent them, our country. >> pelosi went on to say the two had cleared the air after a squabble over the border crisis between moderate and progressive

democrats. >> canadian authorities zeroed in on an area in their hunt for two teenage boys suspected of killing three people. canadian police just released this video of the fugitive teenagers. these images were recorded in a store three days ago. they have been spotted twice. the father of one believes his son is on a suicide mission. >> a normal child doesn't travel across the country killing people. >> 18-year-old bryer and his 19-year-old friend are wanted in connection with the shooting deaths of north carolina native china and her boyfriend lucas fouler last week. the teens are also been charged in the killing of leonard. the teens may have changed their appearance. a southern california hospital is taking extra steps to help protect newborns from the start. it involve as high-tech tool and the baby's feet.

club raised $50,000 to restore it. >> a lot of the plaster had fallen off and you can hardly tell that it looked like this. we basically had to strip it down to its skeleton and then replaster it and repaint it so it was quite a job. >> the structure is so much a part of oakland that sly and the family stone used it for a 1968 album cover. there will be a community celebration this sunday from 111 11:00 to 1:00. heads up in san plfrancisco might be hard to get around city unless you're running, of course. the race starts at 5:30 a.m. on sunday. you can see the course map here on your screen. it goes along the embark dcader and back through golden gate park and through the soma neighborhoods. many muni buses are being rerouted and roads are closed to regular traffic as late as 3:00

us. >> what's up with that? >> let's see what spencer has for us? >> live doppler 7, the fog is advancing beyond the coastline providing a cooling influence. overnight lows won't be very low in our inland areas we'll see mainly upper 50s to low and mid 60s and tomorrow, look for high temperatures climbing above 100 degrees well above 100, fairfield, clover dale and even other locations that don't reach triple digits would be 98 or 99. not much different on sunday. numerous locations will top out at upper 90s to low 100 and heat advisories infect for much of the interior but on monday, a sharp cooldown. high temperatures will drop 10 or 12 from sunday's levels in many locations and remain in that range on tuesday. so here is the accuweather seven-day forecast, very hot almost dangerously hot weekend in our inland areas but the cooldown on monday is going to last pretty much through the entire week.
