good morning. thank you for joining us. we are going to get straight to the latest on that deadly shooting attack in northern california. >> it sent people in the city of gilroy running for their lives. this was billed as a family-friendly festival. one couple was seen pushing their young child in a stroller amid the chaos there. we know at least four people are dead, including the suspect. first responders started moving to assist victims immediately. >> we've got one shooting victim, i need an ambulance, code red. >> we have a second victim, they're performing cpr. >> i'll find out where you can get the victims closest to us. >> officials say that they are investigating the possibility of a second suspect and a law enforcement official tells abc news investigators believe they know the identity of the shooter who was taken down there at the scene. they're working to find out what connection, if any, he had to gilroy and why that festival.

>> let's go right to abc's alex stone who's headed to that scene in gilroy right now. >> reporter: kenneth and janai, the hunt is on right now for the other person who may have been involved. police are saying that they do believe that there was a second person. they don't know if that person was a shooter or somebody who was assisting the gunman as he carried out this attack. but they believe that at least the gunman, if he was working alone, or with some other person, that he cut his way through a chain link fence that was around the festival, a very popular festival. hottest day of the year, last day of the festival. three days. it's something that about 100,000 people attend. as somebody who grew up in northern california, i can tell you it is a very popular place for people to go this time of the year. police believe using some kind

of tool, that the gunman cut his way through that chain link fence, went in by one of the three stages, and then began opening fire. they believe it was at random. it appears to have been at random. a motive, they have no idea right now. >> and alex, so we know that you're familiar with that area. for the viewers at home, gilroy is about 80 miles or so, an hour and a drive south of san francisco. but tell us about the area where this festival is. we know it's outdoors. but there's a lot of open land around that festival, correct? >> reporter: it is an agricultural area known for garlic. that's why the garlic festival is in gilroy. it is a large park or fairgrounds-type area where they hold it. it's about a 55-acre area where this festival goes on. it is a community of about 50,000, a little less than 50,000, 30 or so miles south of san jose. a lot of people come down from the silicon valley, people from san francisco as well, about an

hour and a half drive, to have a fun weekend of a lot of music, three stages, a lot of food. they have the garlic fries, something that is popular that a lot of people go for because they get that fresh garlic. there is a lot of popularity with the festival, with the food. you grab a couple of drinks, you have some garlic fries, listen to some music, and have a good time. it's normally very calm, relatively rural area outside of the bay area, and you know, the folks who were there today, they say that they never expected anything like this to happen. >> all right, alex, thank you so much for joining us this morning. and again, officials say they are investigating the possibility of a second suspect. they will likely be out in that area all night long. and we know that there was a band on the stage when the shooting began. >> hear one band member describe how the scene unfolded right before their eyes. >> we were on stage, we were

doing an encore. the vineyard stage. i heard a pop. and it didn't sound right to me so i turned in the direction of the pop. and i saw a gentleman in a green top with a gray handkerchief around his neck and what appeared to be an assault rifle. >> a rifle? >> well, here's -- i'm not a gun guy. so it looked like a rifle. bigger than a pistol, smaller than a hunting rifle. and he was slapping the magazine, it evidently was jammed or something, i don't know. then he started shooting again in the direction of where all the food people were dining. and i said -- i said, guys, off. we cleared the stage at that point and ducked under the stage so we wouldn't be visible. >> that was a band member who was on stage at the time of that shooting at the gilroy garlic

festival. we way to say thanks to our abc station, kgo out of san francisco, on the scene. they've been on the scene all night long talking to witnesses young and older who were there. and that shows you just how much of a family event this was. again, a lot of family fun, as alex described, then shots rang out. >> stay with abc news for continuing coverage of the shooting. we'll have a live report ahead on "america this morning" as well as on "good morning america." we do want to get to other news we're following this morning. president trump is pushing back against growing allegations of racism as he escalates his attacks on congressman elijah cummings. the president is calling cummings a racist and accusing democrats of playing the race card after initially taking aim at cummings and disparaging his predominantly black district. the president insists there's nothing racist about his comments. abc's tara palmieri has more. >> reporter: president trump defending himself against charges of racism after launching a twitter attack on the african-american chairman of the house oversight committee and his majority black district.

tweeting, there is nothing racist in stating plainly what most people already know, that elijah cummings has done a terrible job for the people of his district and of baltimore itself. after the president called cummings' district, maryland 7th, a disgusting rat and rodent-infested mess where no human being would want to live, dozens of democrats quickly fired back. >> well, the president as he usually is or often is, disgusting and racist. >> a racist president who attacks people because they are african-americans. >> reporter: the president has used the loaded word "infested" to describe minority members of congress. including earlier this month when he suggested that four congresswomen of color, all american citizens, quote, go back and help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which he came. >> he continues to say about cities all across the country. i mean look, our president has a hate a agenda. >> reporter: the president's acting chief of staff defending his boss. >> infested. it sounds like vermin. it soundsubhuman.

these are all six members, members of congress who are people of color. >> i think you're spending way too much time reading between the lines. >> i'm not reading between the lines, i'm reading the lines. >> reporter: the president accusing democrats of playing the race card. but he inserted race into the conversation, using #blacksfortrump2020 while criticizing cummings' very poor, very dangerous, and very badly run district." >> if i had poverty in my district like baltimore, i'd get fired. i think that the president is right to raise that. it has absolutely zero to do with race. >> reporter: nationally the median household income is just over $60,000. essentially the same as the median household income in maryland's 7th district. the city of baltimore did not take the president's insults quietly. >> it is completely unacceptable for the president of the united states of america to use his considerable power and global voice to attack a vibrant american city. >> reporter: "the baltimore sun" publishing this scathing editorial. "better to have a few rats than to be one."

welcome back. recapping our breaking news we're continuing to follow, a deadly shooting attack at a popular food festival in the city of gilroy, california. police say a gunman opened fire after gaining access to the festival grounds by cutting through a perimeter fence. police engaged the suspect in less than a minute, fatally shooting the gunman after he's suspected of killing at least three people, injuring at least 15 others. law enforcement telling abc news they have i.d.'d that suspect and are working to figure out what connection, if any, he may have to the gilroy area. and some witnesses reported seeing a second suspect.

police say they are investigating that possibility. stay with us as we continue to work to learn more. in other news and in chicago, a 5-year-old boy is being hailed a hero this morning for saving the lives of more than a dozen people. >> after a fire broke out in his aunt's home early in the morning, jaden made sure everyone was awake, alert, and evacuated. here's abc's zachary kiesch. >> reporter: dramatic new video showing flames tearing through a home in chicago with more than a dozen people sleeping inside. the only one not sleeping, little 5-year-old jaden, who just happened to be staying over at his aunt's house. he sprang into action. >> i got mad. because aunty's house was on fire. >> reporter: jaden was watching tv when suddenly he smelled smoke. without flinching, he told his family, including his two sisters, to get out. >> because i'm smart and i'm brilliant. >> reporter: jaden, whose favorite superhero is the flash, running down the stairs, telling the neighbors about the fire, helping 13 people escape the flames.

were you scared? >> yes. what do you think? i was scared. >> he saved everyone. if he hadn't got sent to his aunty's house wednesday, then he would have never been there to get everybody out of the building. >> reporter: jaden doing what superheroes do. >> i'm flash. i can go fast, look. >> reporter: the red cross is providing support to jaden and the others impacted by the fire while investigators continue to search for a cause. zachary kiesch, abc news, new york. >> brave little boy there, our thanks to zachary. also this morning we're mourning the loss of a disney legend. russi taylor, the voice of minnie mouse, died over the weekend. she played minnie in films, television, and video games. taylor married the man who voiced mickey mouse. they were together until he died in 2009. both portrayed their iconic characters longer than any other voice actors. taylor was 75. disney is the parent company of abc news.
