lives including one couple fleeing while pushing their child in a stroller. police say officers killed the shooter but they're now investigating whether the attacker had an accomplice. >> the festival is a popular family event each year in the small city of gilroy. about 80 miles southeast of san francisco. abc's megan tevrizian is here with the latest. good morning, megan. >> reporter: hi, kenneth. yeah, the shooting happened the third and final day of the festival that attracts celebrity chefs, musicians and tens of thousands of people. a fun weekend festival turning deadly sunday. >> some random dude just started shooting like he just pulled out a gun and we were just eating. >> it started popping off like fireworks. that's what i thought it was. i had no idea until he grabbed me and said that's gunfire. let's go. >> reporter: authorities saying at least four people are dead including the suspect. many more were injured. >> he just like shoot once and

then he like stopped and started shooting repeatedly. >> reporter: it happened 6:00 p.m. west coast time. a man opening fire while the band vital sound played on stage. one member telling kgo he heard a pop and saw a shooter with what appeared to be an assault rifle. >> he was just firing into the biggest bunch of people he could find. i was just going holy crap. >> reporter: authorities saying the suspect gained access to the festival from a creek using some sort of tool to cut through a fence. the suspect shot down by gilroy police. but authorities believe there could be an accomplice. this morning the community of roughly 50,000 people in disbelief. >> to have seen this event end this way this day is just one of the most tragic and sad things i've ever had to see. it's just a horrible thing to experience. >> reporter: and law enforcement officials say they've identified the suspect and are investigating if he has any connections to the festival and we're learning more about that 6-year-old victim. his name is steven romero. his grandmother says he was a loving and happy boy.

his mother is expected to survive after getting shot in the stomach and hand. kenneth. >> thank you for those details, megan tevrizian, thank you. now to another shake-up at the white house this morning. president trump has chosen a replacement for dan coats, the director of national intelligence. coats is resigning after being at odds with the president for much of his two-year tenure publicly clashing over the issue of russian middling in the 2016 election. the president is expected to nominate texas congressman john ratcliffe for the job. ratcliffe is a former u.s. attorney who had a fiery exchange with former special counsel robert mueller last week. senate majority leader chuck schumer is among the democrats criticizing the choice claiming ratcliffe has been selected because of, quote, blind loyalty to the president. next to the fallout over president trump's attacks on congressman elijah cummings and his district which includes the city of baltimore. the president is denying his

criticism was racist. instead accusing democrats of placing the race card. this morning, president trump defending himself against charges of racism. in more than a dozen tweets over the weekend the president took aim at congressman elijah cummings calling his majority black district around baltimore a disgusting rat and rodent infested mess where no human being would want to live and using the hash blacks for trump 2020. it comes more than a week after cummings took on kevin mcaleenan criticizing the administration's immigration policy. >> none of us would have our children in that position. they are human beings. >> reporter: trump has used the word infested before to criticize minority members of congress including earlier this month when he suggested four congresswomen of color all of whom are american citizens go back and help fix the totally and crime infested places from which they came. >> the president is as he usually is or often is disgusting and racist. >> reporter: now the president insists democrats are the ones playing the race card tweeting

there is nothing racist in stating plainly what most people already know, that elijah cummings has done a terrible job for the people of his district and of baltimore itself. the president's chief of staff claims trump's comments are appropriate. >> if i had poverty in my district like they have in baltimore, i'd get fired. and i think the president is right to raise that. it has absolutely nothing to do with race. >> this morning the city of baltimore is punching back. "the baltimore sun" published a scathing editorial saying better to have a few rats than to be one. when the president attacked the four congresswomen earlier this month the house passed a resolution condemning his comments. some lawmakers are suggesting they do that again. now to the leadership crisis in puerto rico. the woman in line to be the next governor says she doesn't want the job. ricardo rossello will be stepping down friday. justice secretary wanda vasquez was supposed to replace him. she was tapped because the secretary of state resigned over those leaked offensive messages which ultimately led to the governor's downfall. vasquez now wants rossello to

appoint a new secretary of state who can then replace him. an outspoken critic of russian president vladimir putin may have been poisoned. that's according to a doctor for alexi navalny. he said navalny suffered symptoms from an unidentified chemical substance. more than 1,000 people have been arrested in moscow while protesting the exclusion of opposition candidates from an upcoming election. time now for a look at your weather on this monday morning. people living west of minneapolis are cleaning up after some reported tornadoes swept through the area causing this damage. the twisters knocked out electricity but no injuries are reported. in california, 154 acres have burned in a fast-moving brush fire. the fire in chino hills outside los angeles damaged a house, but crews say they've now stopped the fire's progress. the far west and southwest will

stay dangerously hot for the next few days. las vegas is among the cities that will see temperatures in the triple digits. coming up, new breakfast cereal kids may soon be singing for. but first the dramatic scene as a plane crashes into this lake. how the pilot and passenger both survived. and later the american swimmer setting a new record in the pool sunday that would make even michael phelps envious.

we're back with this train derailment south of chicago. that amtrak train hit a truck killing the driver. five passenger cars derailed but no one on the train was seriously hurt. the crash happened at a crossing. officials say the signals were working.

heavy winds may have played a role in this small plane crash in michigan. the plane nosedived into little field lake with two people on board. good samaritans rushed in to help rescue them. >> we didn't have a good feeling but the pilot was in pretty good shape. the passenger was seriously hurt. it's such a shocking thing to see firsthand and the way it crashed, it just was so scary. >> the passenger in that plane remains in serious condition. breaking overnight the manhunt for the suspects in a canadian killing spree has moved to a remote northern town. police say they may have been seen in york landing, manitoba, more than 400 miles north of winnipeg. local residents there have been warned to stay indoors. that pair is wanted in connection with three murders including the killings of an american woman and her boyfriend.

married just weeks ago. >> police in rome are releasing new details about the crime amid new questions about how the suspects are being treated. this morning, two american teens are behind bars accused of murdering a police officer in rome. one of the teens is seen in this photo blindfolded and handcuffed in a police station. the police commissioner calls the blindfold illegal and a mistake. officials say the image was taken after suspects gabe natale hjorth and finnegan elder were taken in for questioning in the stabbing of officer cerciello rega. police say the confrontation started when the two suspects, both tourists from san francisco, approached a man and allegedly asked where they could buy drugs. the man led them to a dealer who police say sold them fake cocaine. the two americans growing angry allegedly went back to the scene and stole the backpack of the man who pointed them to the drug dealer. police set up an undercover operation in response, and that's when officer rega was stabbed eight times. security footage allegedly shows the two suspects fleeing the

scene. police say the teens confessed to the crime. >> i've known finn since he was born. i'm in shock. he's the nicest guy -- one of the nicest neighbors i have. >> elder's family released a statement saying, we express our deepest condolences to the grieving family and community that loved brigadier cerciello rega adding, we are deeply concerned for our son and are heartened by the expressions of sympathy and support from our friends and neighbors. in the meantime, crowds lined up in rome to pay their respects to officer rega at his wake. italy's prime minister among the mourners. >> there may be shock and disbelief back home in america, but in italy there's anger and outrage. this is becoming a huge political issue. it's leading all the newspapers and tv news. >> reporter: and this morning, italy's deputy prime minister reacting to backlash over the image of the blindfolded suspect writing on twitter that officer rega is the real victim adding

that the teenagers deserve life in prison. at a hearing this weekend, both americans waved their right to speak. court records show they blamed each other for the murder. according to italian law anyone who participates in the murder can be charged with murder even if that person did not deliver the fatal blow. the fbi hopes the public can help track down the so-called pink lady bandy. the woman is wanted in at least four bank robberies in three states this month from pennsylvania to delaware and north carolina. she got the nickname from the pink handbag she carried during two of the holdups. the fbi is offering a $10,000 reward. beachgoers are on alert after two shark attacks over the weekend off the florida coast. professional surfer frank o'rourke was bitten in the arm while surfing at jacksonville beach. he managed to get away after a struggle but he suffered several puncture wounds. >> i was just laying on my board right over behind me and waiting for a wave. all of a sudden a shark comes out of the water and grabs on to my arm.

westbound into dublin-pleasanton. ace train 1 did leave stockton on time. police have confirmed to abc 7 news they will hold a briefing at 10:00 a.m. >> we'll be streaming it live when it happens on abc7news.com. let's catch you up on the latest we know at this hour. gunfire broke out around 5:40 yesterday evening at christmas hill park in gilroy. gilroy police say they shot and killed the gunman. police say witnesses reported a second suspect, but investigators don't know exactly how that person was involved. this morning three victims are dead including a 6-year-old boy. the gunman is also dead. 15 others are wounded. now more on the victims. as we mentioned, we learned one of the three people killed is that 6-year-old. >> abc 7 news reporter jobina fortson liveout side regional medical center in san jose. that is where the boy's grandmother shared her grief with us overnight. jobina.

>> reporter: good morning. we know three people are dead and that includes a 6-year-old boy. according to a hospital spokesperson, there are more than a dozen people hospitalized right now and their conditions range from fair to critical condition. as you all mentioned, the grandmother of the 6-year-old boy talked with reporters overnight outside of the hospital here. she's remembering her grandson steven romero as a loving boy. maribel romero says she was at home when she got the call saying her grandson who was at the event were shot. his mother and grandmother were shot as well and were in the hospital as well. she says she just wants justice for her grandson steven. >> it has to be someone really sick, because shooting a kid. that's a family event. i just hope there's justice and they catch the last person
