garlic festival at 10:00 this morning. >> abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live at the festival grounds to explain how this unfolded. amy. >> reporter: good morning, reggie. police are still here on the scene. look behind me. you can see an officer with his spotlight turned on towards the woods. they're still looking for a possible second suspect. one gunman was shot dead by police. here is cell phone video of the chaos taken at the festival as people ran for their lives. shots were fired at about 5:41 yesterday. three people were killed including a 6-year-old boy and 12 people were hurt. guns were not allowed at the festival, and security checked for weapons at the gate. the police chief described how the gunman snuck into the festival. >> it appears as though they had come into the festival via the creek which borders a parking

area, and they used some sort of a tool to cut through the fence to be able to gain access through the secure fence line and that's how they got into the festival area itself. >> witnesses told police there may have been a second suspect. police say they don't know for sure, but they're still looking. they don't know whether that person is armed. police say the killer used an assault-type rifle. they have not released any information, though, about the gunman at this time. no word on a possible motive. the police chief also said there were no surveillance cameras at the festival, so they're asking for any witnesses with any information to come forward and share that information with police. reporting live from gilroy, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. most heartbreaking at all, that a 6-year-old boy lost his life yesterday during the shooting. our team coverage continues with abc 7 news reporter jobina

fortson. >> she's live outside the santa clara county medical center where his grandmother shared her grief overnight. >> reporter: steven romero is the name of the 6-year-old boy killed yesterday. as you mentioned, his grandmother talked with reporters outside the hospital overnight. she described her grandson as a loving boy and says he was at the garlic festival with his mother and other grandmother. maribel romero says her grandson was so loving. she was at home yesterday when she got a call from someone telling her her grandson had been shot. she said she went from hospital to hospital trying to find him. when she finally reached the right location, he had already died. steven's mother and other grandmother were also shot at the garlic festival. she wants justice for her grandson and all of them. >> so far i know the shooter got my daughter-in-law through her

stomach. i guess it passed through her side of the stomach and to the baby's back. i'm not sure. grandma got shot through the leg or feet. grandma hasn't been taken care of because they're waiting for insurance. the ceo said they wanted to take care of that -- >> there are more than a dozen hospitalized victims right now from that shooting yesterday. according to a hospital spokesperson, their conditions range from critical to fair. reporting in san jose this morning, jobina fortson, abc 7 news. a rock band named tinman was on stage performing when the shooting happened. like many others, they thought the gunfire was fireworks until a band member spotted the shooter. >> they started shooting again in the direction of where all the food -- people were dining. i said, guys, off, we cleared

the stage at that point and ducked under the stage so we wouldn't be visible. >> we could smell the gunpowder. you could hear the screams. it just was awful. >> from my perspective he was firing into the biggest bunch of people he could find. >> the band said they weren't supposed to be on stage at that point. they were playing an encore. >> you heard from the band tinman. we have a map of the festival to give you an idea of where the shooting took place. tinman was on the vineyard stage located right here. you heard from police earlier. they were talking about the fact that it looked like the gunman had come through a stream area and cut through a fence. so this is the stream, and we don't know exactly where the fence was. at some point they got near this area where the vineyard stage was. as you heard the band say, they could see the shooting happen

the panic and heard gunshots shared their experience on social media. >> are you okay? >> a wounded man laid bleeding in the back of the white pickup truck she's in. these are some of the videos people shared with abc 7 news. they give you a sense of the confusion, the chaos as people were running away. eight first many thought the sound was fireworks. we know at least a dozen people suffered injuries as the crowd rushed away. some people literally running for their lives. >> you're about to hear radio clatter between dispatchers, police and firefighters the moments of the first reports came in. law enforcement and medical teams mounted an immediate response with every available response. >> active shooter at the garlic festival, if you can start that way. >> battalion 47 responding. >> battalion 47, getting numerous calls on it.

pd is advising shooter south of miller in the creek wearing camouflage and a hat. wounded at beer booth 3. two more wounded at beer booth 3. county has been advised on the level two emergency. >> officers and balances from throughout the county raced to the scene. so did air ambulances which transported many of the critically wounded to valley medical center. one witness says she watched as police took the shooter down. >> i seen him starting to take steps. like i say, he looked like he was trying to load the clip up again, and that's when the cop shot him and he fell to the floor. they shot him two more times. there was a little counter and three people were hiding behind the counter and other people were laying on the floor so they couldn't get shot. >> she said despite being on the ground, she tried to look at his face in case she had to identify him later.

finnegan elder were taken into custody. investigators say they confessed to being involved in an altercation over a stolen backpack that led to the fatal stabbing of the officer. investigators say they found overwhelming evidence in the room including the supposed murder weapon, cleverly concealed behind one of the ceiling tiles as well as bloody clothing. coming up at 7:00 a.m., the latest developments in the international murder case. kenneth moton, abc news, new york. in the north bay a stretch of lucas valley road remains closed because of an overturned tanker that spilled fuel onto a creekbed. this happened yesterday morning in marin county. the tanker was carrying 6,700 gallons of fuel. police closed the road between west gate and valley drive. officials say about 250 gallons were released into the dry creekbed. all the fuel has to be removed from the truck before it can be

6-year-old boy killed in the shooting. abc 7 news spoke to the boy's grandmother outside regional medical center in san jose. maribel romero said her grandson steven was a loving and playful boy. he was with his mother and his other grandmother. they were also shot and they are recovering in the hospital. she said her heart dropped when she got the phone call. >> we were home and got a call from someone saying my grandson got shot and his mom and his other grandmother. so we run out looking for them. my son is the first one to get notified where they were. i went from hospital to hospital to look for him. my son told me he was over here, and we came over. when i got here, he was already dead. >> more than a dozen people are still hospitalized. a spokesperson at the hospital tells us their injuries range from fair to critical.

abc 7 news reporter luz pena spoke to witnesses. two women working the event were feet away from the gunman when they saw him load his weapon. >> we left our booth and walked to the restrooms, the port-o-potties, that were 25 feet from our booth. we came out and heard a pop. we looked at each other, maybe it's fireworks. then we both looked and the gunman was 10 to 15 feet away from us. he had like a rifle and he was putting the clip into it. he put a clip into it and turned. >> started walking and shooting. he didn't care. >> the women said he ended up shooting two of their co-workers. >> a lot of people at the garlic festival started taking video of the events going on. at least one caught what appears to be gunshots. [ gunshots y canear the sound people started running and screaming as the gunfire eupted.

springs. 76 to 82 with partly cloudy conditions in san diego and los angeles. 88 in yosemite. 81 today in tahoe. 80 by friday with sunshine, low to mid 80s with sunshine this weekend. reggie. >> if you're just joining us this morning, here is what we know about the deadly shooting at the gilroy garlic festival. four people including the gunman are dead. there are at least a dozen injured. the shooting started yesterday evening at 5:40. the three victims killed include a 6-year-old boy. police believe the gunman cut through a fence lining a creek outside the festival. a second suspect was reported, but police are not sure about that person's role in the shooting. a group of teens who ran from the gunfire at the gilroy garlic festival say they jumped through a fence and ran into a wooded area to hide. >> one member of the group was wounded during the escape. family members describe the frantic moments as they ran away from the shooting scene. >> we ran through a fence.

a guy helped us to pass it. we were there with the girl who got shot. >> your cousin? >> yes. >> when did she get shot? >> we didn't know she got shot. we were running with her. when we saw, she already had a hole in her leg. >> gabriel says he took off his shirt and applied pressure to his cousin's gunshot wound. she was brought to valley medical center in san jose. funeral service will be held for the italian police officer killed in the line of duty and the suspects are two teenagers from the bay area. >> abc 7 news reporter ian pannell is at the murder scene which has turned into a memorial for the be loved fallen officer. >> reporter: good morning. italy is a nation that awakes at the shock of a murder of a police officer allegedly at the hands of two american teenagers. this is the scene where the man was stabbed to death, what was a

pool of blood friday morning has become a makeshift shrine with flowers and candles at the scene. the two americans suspected of killing the police officer are being held separately in jail this morning, not allowed to speak to each other. 18-year-old gabe natale hjorth and 19-year-old finnegan elder were taken in for questioning. italian police say the two americans confessed to stealing a backpack in an alleged drug deal gone wrong. security footage showing the teens fleeings the scene. it ended with the murder of officer mario reeg ga. police say they were demanding 100 euros in cash and a graham of cocaine. two plain closed policemen were sent to respond. that's when reeg ga was stabbed 11 times. police say they apprehended the men at the hotel where they were preparing to leave the country. investigators say they found overwhelming evidence in their room including the supposed murder weapon cleverly concealed

a sig alert in effect until 8:00 this morning. stall southbound on sunol commute near sheridan blocking lane three, the third lane from the left. that's causing a backup into sunol. we have this overturned big rig on its side. this is west 152 near ferguson in the gilroy area. chp has issued a sig al left. you can see the traffic on 152 headed over towards 101 is jammed there. if you're traveling from gilroy up towards san jose, expect those delays there. >> sue, thank you. happening today, kaiser employees will vote on whether to authorize a strike. the union says the workers have been without a contract for months. contract talks stalled a couple of weeks ago. roughly 85,000 employees could walk off the job in california and at least five other states. the union accused keiser of unfair labor practices. keiser has not commented. in the south bay sacred heart community service is in need of backpack donations for
