stage in detroit on night one. they were clashing over health care and how to beat donald trump. abc's mary bruce starts us off in detroit with all the details. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia. well, this debate last night exposed a real rift within the democratic party as these lesser known candidates took on the two leading liberals, elizabeth warren and bernie sanders, forcing them to play defense against accusations their progressive policies could be bad for the party and ultimately good for donald trump. overnight a fight for the future of the democratic party. >> we need to have a campaign of energy and excitement and of vision. >> let's get real. tonight we debate but ultimately we have to beat donald trump. >> reporter: the moderate candidates taking on progressives, bernie sanders and elizabeth warren. warning that their policies are too extreme and could deliver president trump a second term. >> you might as well fedex the election to donald trump. i think we got to focus on where donald trump is failing. >> i don't understand why anybody goes to all the trouble of running for president of the united states just to talk about what we really can't do and shouldn't fight for.

you found the courage to stand up to him or you continued to put party over country. >> reporter: now over and over again last night we saw these candidates who have been struggling to break through trying to seize the moment, some had more success than others. check this out, this is the google map of the most searched candidates before the debate. as you can see it's quite a mix but during the debate you see all of that yellow, that is marianne williamson. a result of all of her unconventional responses, cecilia, all of these candidates are looking for that much needed boost that they're going to need in order to qualify for the xtde >> trying to stay in the race, surprisingly one name that did not come up, not even once, joe biden. he will be there on stage tonight. the others sure to have their sights set on him. >> reporter: yeah, joe biden needs a strong showing here tonight. he has a lot on the line after his lackluster performance at the first debate. joe biden will be center stage tonight next to kamala harris who successfully took him on in the last debate and cory booker.

biden is sure to face a lot of attacks on everything from health care to race. cecel cecelia? >> you'll be back there again tonight, mary, thank you. michael? now we move on to the severe weather threat. 30 million in the northeast bracing for dangerous storms after the south got hit overnight. at least six people struck by lightning in florida. rob is tracking it all. good morning, rob. >> good morning, michael. a small miracle none of those six were killed. already ten fatalities from lightning strikes this year. this is the time of year heavy rain with the storms as well. 7.7 inches in alexandria, louisiana. some rescues undertaken there. over a hundred damaging storm reports. a lot of trees down across new york state. saratoga county seeing some trees down as well. 76-mile-per-hour wind gusts on lake champlain. two kayakers missing because of that extreme wind. heat on for eastern massachusetts. here comes the next front, flash flood watches posted for much of pennsylvania and new jersey and looking for severe storms potentially along i-95

from d.c. through hartford right around there. amy, to you. new trouble with north korea. kim jong-un firing off two more missile tests on the heels of last week's launch. james longman has all the latest for us. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning. this is the second missile launch from north korea in less than a week. two short-range ballistic missiles were fired from the hodo peninsula. that's on the east coast of the country. the south koreans say they flew 155 miles at 19 miles altitude before dropping into the east sea towards japan. these launches come amid faltering negotiations over the north's nuclear program and of course part of a familiar pattern of north korea posturing to put pressure on the u.s. to drop sanctions. donald trump has spoken of his good relationship with kim jong-un and hours after he sent kim mementos of his brief visit when he became the first president to step foot into north korea. mike pompeo spoke after the first launch saying he was hopeful fresh talks would begin after too long.

despite the drama of military bravado real progress on this dangerous issue seems to have stalled. say my amy? >> stalled, indeed. james longman thank you. cecilia. now to the latest on that deadly shooting at a walmart in mississippi. this morning we're learning about more victims -- more about the victims killed by a disgruntled employee who opened fire injuring a police officer before he was taken down. steve osunsami is on the scene with more on this. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, cecilia. this 24-hour walmart remains closed this morning as investigators continue to look into a fire that they say this accused gunman set. the accused gunman was shot and had to have surgery. one of their officers was also shot and is alive this morning because of his bullet proof vest. panic outside this 24-hour walmart in south haven, mississippi in the memphis suburbs. customers who just walked out heard the gunfire in the parking lot and then say the accused gunman ran into the store with a firearm. >> i'm thinking, why is he running into the store, you

know, and just about 30 seconds later we see two people run out of the store and then just a flood of people leaving. >> reporter: dozens of workers ran for their lives. brandon gales was shot dead in the parking lot. anthony brown, the store's manager was killed inside. police arrived just minutes later and find the accused gunmaneaving the store. >> two of our officers encountered the suspect outside on the west side parking lot of the building. one of our officers was shot at this time. >> reporter: the accused gunman is hospitalized this morning. 39-year-old martez abram was arrested, remains in police custody charged with two counts of murder. police say he was recently fired but walmart tells abc news that abram was a current employee who had recently been suspended after a workplace incident where he got into trouble for showing a knife to a co-worker. authorities had just finished active shooter training about two weeks ago and they tell us

this morning, michael, that they firmly believe that that training helped them save lives here. michael? >> thank you so much, steve. could have been a lot worse. thank you. now to the dramatic hearing on capitol hill. president trump's nominee for the nation's second highest military officer denying allegations of sexual assault as his accuser an army colonel sat a few feet away. abc's stephanie ramos had a chance to speak with her. good morning to you, stephanie. >> reporter: michael, good morning. military officials, the former secretary of the air force and a majority of lawmakers on the senate armed services committee have endorsed that air force general trying to be the number two military officer. many dismissing the allegations made against him by his former aide. air force general john hyten, the man nominated to be vice chairman of the joint chiefs of staff facing senators and explosive allegations of sexual misconduct. >> i want to state to you and to the american people in the strongest possible terms that these allegations are false. >> reporter: sitting just a few feet away during the hearing his

accuser, army colonel kathryn spletstoser, his former aide at u.s. strategic command. the 28-year veteran tells "the new york times" her former boss sexually assaulted her in her hotel room during a conference in 2017. but a military investigation found insufficient evidence to charge or punish hyten. senator martha mcsally who has publicly shared her own experience with sexual assault in the air force is backing hyten. >> sexual assault happens in the military. it just didn't happen in this case. >> reporter: there was also a military investigation in 2018 into spletstoser's conduct that concluded she created a toxic environment for her staff. spletstoser is firing back. >> it basically tells sexual assault survivors that don't bother to report. you won't be taken seriously. and we'll give your attacker a promotion. >> reporter: the senate armed services committee will hold a

confirmation vote for hyten today. he is likely to be approved but he will need the full senate to confirm that nomination. amy? >> all right, stephanie ramos, thank you. now to a new concern about some e-cigarettes. a new study reporting an unexpected chemical reaction in some flavors that could lead to lung irritation. abc's eva pilgrim is here with the latest on that. good morning, eva. >> good morning, amy. simply inhalling on the e-cigarette sparks a chemical reaction and this new study raising the question, what's happening in that reaction and is it safe? >> reporter: this morning a new study raising concerns about chemical reactions in some cigarettes. researchers from yale and duke university looking specifically at certain flavors of juuls, the best-selling e-cigarettes in the u.s. analyzing the liquid in vapor produced when the vape juice is heated up. reporting they found chemicals in one of them called acetals which can prompt a respiratory system to become inflamed.

it looked at eight different flavors and concluded creme brulee, a sweet flavor favored by teens had acetales present in the liquid and aerosol. >> most teenagers don't understand the nature of what they're drawing into their lungs. >> reporter: according to the cdc more than 3.5 middle and high school students use e-cigarettes. the fda does not require manufacturers to list all of the ingredients used in the products. juul says their products are not intended for teens but for adults who want an alternative to traditional cigarettes especially when trying to quit. they argue the yale study is flawed claiming researchers created a measurement of exposure that would never be found in the real world. and just this month eight teenagers were hospitalized at the children's hospital of wisconsin for having seriously damaged lungs, possibly from vaping. though the teens reported vaping in the weeks and months prior to being hospitalized, all have improved with treatment.

exactly what they were vaping and what caused their symptoms is still unknown but there are a lot of unknowns with these e-cigarettes. they're still pretty new in the world of things that we use. >> and so as parents we should all be mindful. our children should not be vaping. juul said repeatedly these things are not for teens. >> exactly. now to that wild bench-clearing brawl, a crazy fight erupted in cincinnati last night after the reds pitcher charged the pirates dugout and whit johnson is here with all the details and what led to that moment. good morning, whit. >> michael, good morning to you. these two teams have a bitter history here. tension building between the reds and pirates since their last dustup several months ago. the latest boiling over in the ninth inning. >> this is not a good scene at all. >> reporter: overnight two baseball teams going ballistic. >> garrett goes in punching. >> reporter: a massive brawl breaking out between the cincinnati reds and pittsburgh pirates throwing haymakers. the fight starting after the pirates pitched too close to a reds batter. later in the game, pitcher amir

garrett defends his teammate engaging in a heated discussion on the mound. that's when things escalated. >> there's serious chirping coming from the pirates dugout. >> reporter: the pirates dugout shouting toward the mound and garrett takes off. >> garrett is on his way to the dugout and here we go. >> chaos ensues. but just when things seem to be quieting down red's player yasiel puig who had just been traded gets in the middle of the feud. >> and now puig from the back. puig coming at -- >> reporter: held back by other players it's the second time this year these two teams have turned a game into a boxing match. >> and now puig is throwing some fists. >> reporter: this time around eight team members were ejected including two coaches. after being kicked out, the man who started the fight apologizing. >> you know, i was angry. you know, today wasn't about baseball. you know, it was about protecting my teammates and, you know, protecting the brotherhood.

>> reporter: the pirates won the game in cincinnati, 11-4. there will be significant suspensions and fines to come and these two teams, by the way, don't have much time to cool off. they face off again later today. >> to run into another team's dugout by yourself, you must have really been heated. i didn't see anything like that since our break room yesterday. guys were in there over a doughnut. >> we got another sports headline. this is much more civil. this is big news from the u.s. women's national team. coach jill ellis announcing that she's retiring on the heels of their huge world cup win. she says the opportunity to coach this team and work with these amazing women has been the honor of a lifetime and she is leaving behind an incredible legacy. listen to this one, over the last five plus years she's coached the most games in the team's history. she also is the first coach in history to win two women's world cups and she's got an incredible

everyone as we said is okay. hard to watch. >> scary. >> thank goodness. >> yes. we'll talk about a close call at the airport. a delta pilot arrested tuesday accused of being drunk just before he was set to fly. david kerley joins us and has all the details. david, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, amy. it was tsa officers like these working in minneapolis on the security line that is dedicated just for crew members that noticed that the delta pilot was acting strangely. this morning, officials tell us the delta pilot was in the security line when he noticed tsa officers conducting additional screening. the pilot reportedly turns around, leaving the line, returning later when no additional screening was under way and was able to pass through. tsa officers already suspicious as they smelled alcohol and alerted police. the 37-year-old pilot was in the cockpit doing preflight checks for the flight to san diego when police arrived. >> once we got right to the plane they said hold up.

perp walked the guy out. not back up through the ramp, but there was a side door that led to the tarmac. >> reporter: an airport spokesperson said they found an alcohol bottle in the pilot's bag and administered two sobriety tests, the pilot failing one. results for the second aren't back. >> for a pilot he looked a little di shefled. he had the whites on, but it was in dire need of ironing. you know, it was kind of a schleppy look. the other pilot looked like he walked out of >> reporter: this pilot suspected under similar circumstances but was cleared a month later when a blood test showed little alcohol in his system. now, pilots have a stricter standard than the rest of us. it's 0.04 alcohol level and delta has one of the strictest policies in the industry and zero tolerance for violations.

they say they're cooperating with the authorities in minneapolis. as for the folks we talked to that passenger, they did make it to san diego. they had to wait for another pilot to get there. guys, back to you. >> i don't think anyone minded waiting for that other pilot. >> good thing those tsa agents picked up on it. new developments in that mystery surrounding the death of an arkansas state senator. a woman facing charges was taken away. t.j. holmes has more. >> reporter: that started with a missing former arkansas state senator who was then later found murdered. but then her former campaign staffer and a woman she was so close to that they were described like sisters was arrested for the murder. the documents in this case have been sealed until now and while we still don't know a motive police say they have the killer on camera. >> reporter: this 48-year-old mother of three is facing the death penalty this morning, accused of killing her one time friend and boss former arkansas state senator linda collins

smith. becky lynn o'donnell taken to court in shackles tuesday where we got new details about the investigation. collins smith was found dead and wrapped in a blanket outside her home june 5th and according it a redacted version of the affidavit, collins smith was stabbed multiple times and her body was moved from inside the residence to the tarp outside. authorities say security footage from inside the former arkansas senator's home recorded on the last day she was seen alive shows o'donnell removing security cameras from the residence. o'donnell pleaded not guilty to tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse in addition to capital murder. >> well, there's two options for penalty -- for punishment of capital murder and you heard what choice i made. >> reporter: o'donnell was in tears as she left the courtroom and mouthed "i love you" to her daughters who were seated in the front row. her fiance tim loggins who was also in the courtroom last tuesday told us collins smith

and now to the new report about what some consider another college admissions scandal. some parents are apparently using a loophole to get their kids more financial aid, exploiting the system for those that actually need help paying for school. linsey davis has more. >> with college tuition on average costing about $32,000 a year some are now wondering if paying for college has become so expensive that even wealthy families are having a hard time paying for it and now as a result some are resorting to this financial aid loophole that allows them to get money they wouldn't otherwise qualify for by transferring legal guardianship of their teens. >> reporter: this morning the education department and several universities are investigating a financial aid loophole that allows children of allegedly wealthy parents to receive financial aid. parents reportedly give up legal guardianship of their children during their junior or senior year of high school so when their child fills out the application for financial aid the student is able to declare

themselves as financially independent, meaning only the child's earnings are considered. the family's income and savings excluded. >> what's first come first serve so if there are students who are taking these moneys who really don't need it, they are really taking it away from families who are in great need. >> reporter: investigations by "the wall street journal" and propublica illinois uncovered dozens of such cases in the suburban chicago area with some of those families living in half million or million dollar homes. >> it definitely is not illegal but i think it definitely is unethical and i think one of the unfortunate things is whenever instances like this occur there's always kind of an effort to say, well, we should tighten this up and restrict the process and if that ends up happening i think the real losers will be the needy families because then they'll be forced to prove they're not gaming the system. >> now, one mother whose household income is $200,000 a year, she admitted to "the wall street journal" she gave up guardianship of her 17-year-old daughter because they had
