thanks for joining us. a big night last night. night two of the democratic debate. >> oh yeah. >> it was a big one. so that's where we begin with this half hour, that contentious clash in detroit. ten democrats battle it out over hot-button issues. >> nearly every candidate on the stage took aim at former vice president joe biden, who was quick to fire back. senator kamala harris also found herself in the crosshairs quite a bit, and the two reignited their fight over bussing and engaged in a heated exchange on healthare. abc's maggie rulli has the highlights. >> reporter: night two of the democratic presidential debate in detroit started off with what some are calling a verbal jab before the first question was even asked. >> go easy on me, kid. >> reporter: vice president joe biden coming face to face with senator kamala harris after the two squared off over bussing and race relations in the first debate. both bringing it up again in round two. >> the vice president has still failed to acknowledge that it

as james longman reports, there are still many questions about when and where he was apparently killed. >> reporter: when s.e.a.l. team 6 burst into osama bin laden's hideout in pakistan and took him out, there was no sign of his son hamza. but u.s. officials tell abc news they believe hamza bin laden is now dead. it's unclear exactly when he was killed but a u.s. military source says it was sometime in the past two years and that american intelligence played a role in the operation. papers found in the raid indicate hamza bin laden was being groomed for a prominent role in al qaeda. after his father's death he promised revenge against the united states. his last public statements came just last year when he threatened his native saudi arabia with violent jihad. back in march the state department offered a $1 million reward for his capture, calling him a key leader, possibly hiding out, just as his father did, in the afghan/pakistan region, syria, or iraq. no word yet on where he's

believed to have met his fate. the power of the bin laden name in recruiting more people to the cause cannot be underestimated. and particularly since al qaeda has been losing ground and members to groups like isis. this certainly does weaken its leadership. james longman, abc news, in london. >> our thanks to james there. u.s. navy investigators are trying to figure out what caused a fighter jet to crash in southern california's death valley national park. >> the f-18 like this one you see pictured was on a routine training mission in what's known as "star wars" canyon. investigators were conducting an extensive search for the pilot. seven people who were watching the exercises suffered minor injuries. they were treated for burns and cuts from flying fragments of that plane. officials near houston say air quality tests in the area of an oil refinery fire are not raising health concerns. the explosion and fire at the exxonmobil plant in baytown, texas sent plumes of black smoke high into the sky. all workers of the plant are accounted for. 37 people were injured. most suffered minor burns. it was at least the fourth fire at an oil industry facility in

the houston area this year. the fathers of the american teenagers accused of killing a police officer in rome are in italy visiting their sons in jail. the father of 18-year-old gabriel hjorth said his son was innocent and didn't know his friend had a knife. he had participated in a sort of fight club during high school and he was arrested once in connection with a fight. prosecutors say elder has confessed to stabbing the officer. accused sex trafficker jeffrey epstein appeared in federal court to learn when he would stand trial. his lawyers were asking for a september 2020 date arguing they have to plow through 1 million pages of discovery. the judge set a tentative start date for june of next year. epstein has pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking and conspiracy charges and faces up to 45 years in prison. drenching thunderstorms fueled by gusting winds are

he didn't see any parachute in the area. the jet was flying through death valley national park's "star wars" canyon which is used almost daily as a military training ground. visitors watch from a scenic overlook as the planes fly below the canyon's rim. one person said he saw what looked like a mushroom cloud go up after the crash. >> we were in front of the valley, and the plane crashed around 50 meters in front of us. >> seven people who were watching from the overlook suffered minor burns and cuts. that was from the flying fragments of the plane. the navy launched a search for the pilot and the investigation into what went wrong immediately after the crash. police in canada say they are scaling back their search for two teenagers wanted in connection with three murders. the suspects have not been seen in more than a week. authorities have used everything from drones to military aircraft while searching about 4,200 square miles across three provinces.
